MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR We hope that your experience at LSUA, and the degree you have earned, will enable you to reach your personal and career goals and help make the world a better place for us all. We know this is only the beginning of many accomplishments you will achieve throughout your life. To the parents, grandparents, loved ones, supporters, and friends of our graduates, please accept our congratulations and thanks. We realize that these accomplishments would not have been possible without your tireless support. Your encouragement throughout the years significantly impacted making this day possible. We want to sincerely thank all of our students, families, and supporters who continue to believe in the high-quality education provided by LSUA.

Completing the requirements for a college degree can only result from substantial personal and family sacrifice, dedication, and hard work. Today, we all celebrate your accomplishments and thank everyone responsible for helping you reach this goal. We all know the past 2+ years have been extremely challenging for all of us due to COVID-19 restrictions; however, today, our focus is on our LSUA students who have exhibited grit and did not allow obstacles to get in the way of their hopes and dreams. We have all been amazed and inspired by your resilience over the past few years dealing with COVID-19 disruptions, a tornado on campus, and two major hurricanes that impacted classes and campus life. You are distinct graduates that will be remembered for achieving your goals despite facing significant obstacles. Serving as your chancellor during these challenging times has been an honor and privilege.
We maintain a commitment to building a positive future for our students through outstanding faculty and staff who remain dedicated to a quality university education for all of our students. Additionally, LSUA is committed to the long-term economic future of central Louisiana, the State of Louisiana, the nation, and the world. In the years ahead, we pledge to continue to attract and educate a growing number of high-quality students like the outstanding graduates we celebrate today, who are ready to enter the workforce and contribute to improving the communities where they live and work. COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Dr. Cormier has demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing evidence-based teaching strategies that promote each student’s academic success. She played a key role in the development and implementation of the Peer Mentor Program, Student Success Coordinator position, and RN-ASN mentor program for LSUA’s ASN nursing program. While serving in the role of RN-BSN Coordinator she was instrumental in transitioning the program to 100% online and developing a curriculum that provides a seamless transition for ASN students to continue their professional education. In recent years, Dr. Cormier has worked closely with community partners to build a nursing pipeline in response to the critical nursing shortage in central Louisiana.
Catherine Cormier, Ph.D., CNE, RN LSUA Student Success Coordinator Program Director for Nursing Grants Dr. Cathy Cormier, PhD, RN, CNE has been a member of the nursing profession for over 40 years. She currently serves as the Student Success Coordinator and Program Director of Nursing Grants for LSUA’s School of Nursing. During the last 25 years, she has devoted her career to preparing future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential to the delivery of safe, patientcentered care. The nurse educator role allows her to share her passion for nursing and teaching with her students. During her tenure at Southeastern Louisiana University, she was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Nursing and Health Science on two occasions.

Under her leadership, LSUA collaborated with LA-HOSA Future Health Professionals organization to offer the first Future Nurse Camp in July 2021. The one-week interactive summer camp provides high school students an opportunity to explore various nursing careers and participate in hands-on activities related to basic nursing skills. The summer camp is now offered annually at LSUA with plans to expand offerings to more rural areas in collaboration with LA-HOSA and Central Louisiana Technical Community College. LA-HOSA awarded Dr. Cormier the 2021-2022 Outstanding Health Professional of the Year in appreciation for her work to develop the next generation of health professionals. Dr. Cormier earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, New Hampshire; a Master of Science in Nursing from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans; and a PhD from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Clinical practice areas include medical-surgical nursing, orthopedics, pediatrics, home health, and hospice. She is also designated as a Certified Academic Nurse Educator (CNE) by the National League of Nursing. Dr. Cormier lives in Alexandria, LA with her husband Bill of 38 years. They have been blessed with three sons and now are the proud grandparents of one-year-old Mia Elizabeth Cormier.
DEGREES WITH HONORS At each commencement, the Chancellor’s Award for “Highest Academic Achievement” is awarded to the graduate receiving an associate degree and to the graduate receiving a baccalaureate degree with the highest GPA, provided that more than 50 percent of the total hours attempted in pursuit of the degree have been earned at Louisiana State University of Alexandria. Graduates receiving baccalaureate degrees may receive their degrees summa cum laude, magna cum laude, or cum laude. The determination for these designations is based on the student’s cumulative grade point average and the completion of at least 48 institutional hours to qualify for Latin Honors. Degrees are awarded summa cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.90 and 4.0; magna cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.70 to 3.89; and cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.50 and 3.69.
Students graduating with honors are recognized at the commencement ceremony by the honors cords they wear. Students graduating summa cum laude wear gold cords; those graduating magna cum laude wear silver cords; and those graduating cum laude wear white cords. Degree Candidates presented with honors in this program is presumptive evidence and is not to be regarded as conclusive. Gamma Beta Phi - Honor Graduates Gamma Beta Phi is a national collegiate honor and service organization. Students must have an overall 3.0 grade point average to be invited to become members. The gold satin stole worn by graduates signifies that they are members in good standing.
THE MACE A mace is the traditional university symbol of educational authority and institutional identity and is presented at formal university rituals and traditions, such as commencement ceremonies. The LSUA mace is forty-eight inches tall and weighs approximately ten pounds. It is crafted of wood from a fallen live oak tree native to the Louisiana State University of Alexandria campus and solid brass. The brass spacers that collectively form the shaft are engraved with milestone dates in the history of the university. The mace is topped with a four-sided acorn, calling attention to the fiftieth anniversary in 2010, the service of Louisiana State University of Alexandria to Louisiana and Central Louisiana in particular, desirable attributes imparted in graduates of Louisiana State University of Alexandria and embossed figures depicting: “One World – Diverse – Intertwined.” The acorn is crowned with the official LSUA oak tree seal with the historical blue and gold banner insignia. Alexandria resident and master craftsman Glen Armand crafted and donated the mace in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Louisiana State University of Alexandria. The LSUA mace was first presented to the faculty, staff and students at the closing commencement exercises of the fiftieth anniversary, December 16, 2010.
