Defining Moments

Who We Are

At LSS, we believe that good moments can become defining moments when children, families and communities are healthy, safe and accepted.

We are more than 450 dedicated employees supported by countless volunteers, donors and board members, serving Sioux Falls, the Black Hills and every community in-between. We are caregivers, advocates, social workers, navigators, administrators, case managers, teachers, therapists, accountants, cooks, counselors, fundraisers, HR specialists, maintenance workers, marketers and more. Each of us brings unique experiences and perspectives to our work, united by a shared passion for transforming good moments into defining moments for those we serve.

VISION-DRIVEN

Serving the state since 1920, LSS is a responsive community partner, evolving to meet the needs and challenges of South Dakotans of all ages, faiths, races and economic statuses. Our vision is that all people in South Dakota will be healthy, safe and accepted. At the heart of this vision is community collaboration, prevention and a diverse continuum of service lines dedicated to:

• Strengthening families and

• Keeping children in their homes and communities

We have had a vibrant year of change at LSS as we have worked to align our programs to better serve South Dakota. We are among the most robust and diverse social service agencies in the state committed to strengthening families and empowering resilient communities. Every day, our team supports clients at defining moments in their lives, promoting stability, hope and wholeness. I invite you to explore this report to see the impact of our work together.”

We believe, and research confirms, that when individuals are part of a strong, stable family, whether that is a traditional family or more informal support systems, they are more likely to be successful. This belief is central to our mission and woven into each service we provide.

Today and every day, we strive to create defining moments for those we serve. What sets us apart is our diverse range of services, allowing us to collaborate effectively to meet the unique needs of individuals, families and communities. Whether providing mental health counseling, adoption services, financial guidance, family stabilization, youth mentoring, residential care or juvenile justice alternatives, everyone who walks through our doors receives support unique to their circumstances.

WITH THE SUPPORT OF OUR COMMUNITY, THIS YEAR WE:

• Launched the Strengthening Families Curriculum: This pilot initiative, which transformed 16 families in 2024, is set for expansion. The program uses a curriculum designed to strengthen communication between parents and children, helping families navigate everyday life and resolve conflicts.

• Expanded Kinship Services: With 10,000 children in our state being raised by relatives in the absence of a parent, we introduced a Kinship Navigator. This new resource connects with families across the state to provide crucial support to kinship caregivers, helping to prevent disruptions for the youth in their care.

• Enhanced Post-Adoption Services: We continue to serve adoptive families at every stage of their journey. We now offer expanded services that support families long after the adoption process is complete, ensuring lasting success and stability for children and their adoptive families.

Scan the QR code to experience more defining moments.

• Expanded Medical Interpreting Services: In response to a growing need, the LSS Multi-Cultural Center launched “Bridging the Gap,” a professional development course for medical interpreting. This is the first program of its kind in South Dakota, helping to improve communication in healthcare settings for non-English speakers.

Investing in the LSS Foundation strengthens the long-term financial future of LSS and amplifies our community impact for generations to come. The Foundation provides stability for tomorrow while generating annual operating funding that propels LSS’s mission forward with greater efficiency and effectiveness today.

Legacy gifts play a vital role in growing the endowment, from which a boarddesignated percentage is distributed each year to support LSS programs and services. In Fiscal Year 20232024, the Foundation distributed $220,889 to LSS services. There are many meaningful ways to leave your legacy and ensure your impact endures, including:

• Bequests through wills and trusts

Transforming good moments into defining moments drives the work we do each day.

At LSS, we believe that every good moment has the potential to grow into a defining moment—one that transforms lives, strengthens families and builds futures. From a child finding safety and belonging in a foster home to a family receiving financial guidance that leads to stability, these moments happen every day because of your generosity and belief in our mission.

This past year, your support has turned challenges into opportunities and small victories into life-changing milestones for the individuals we serve. The numbers in this report tell a story of impact, but the true measure of success lies in the lives uplifted through the kindness and compassion of our donors, volunteers and employees.

We are deeply grateful for every gift, every act of kindness and every prayer offered in support of our work. It is because of you—our donors, partners and advocates—that LSS can continue to be a place where good moments become defining ones.

In the year ahead, I invite you to join us in continuing this important work. Your generosity inspires hope and fuels a brighter future for those we serve.

Thank you for being part of our 2024.

SouthDakota CARES: LSS Day of Giving

Our Day of Giving is inspired by our inception in 1920, when more than 100 women came together for a donation day, preparing supplies for the opening of the House of Mercy—the first of many LSS services.

In honor of that historic moment 104 years ago, we now host South Dakota CARES—a statewide day of giving that brings South Dakotans together to celebrate stories of positive change; inspire generosity through matching and challenge gifts; and raise funds to support children, families and communities across the state.

Join us April 24-30, 2025, for our annual Day of Giving celebration, and help create a future where all South Dakotans are healthy, safe and accepted.

A cherished tradition in Sioux Falls, the festival provides a welcoming space to learn about and celebrate the diverse cultures in our communities.

In 2024, attendees enjoyed captivating performances, explored the Global Village, created crafts in the South Dakota Public Broadcasting (SDPB) children’s tent, admired nearly 200 flags representing countries worldwide and sampled global flavors from local food vendors.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR THE 2025 FESTIVAL OF CULTURES!

Join us Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Levitt at the Falls. Enjoy live entertainment, vendors, engaging children’s activities, delicious local food trucks and the return of our newest highlight—the Global Village.

STORY OF IMPACT | RESIDENTIAL

One Student's Path Through Adversity

In high school, Simeon grappled with depression and anxiety, which negatively affected his academic performance. A major turning point came when he joined LSS Residential Services. The supportive group environment inspired Simeon to improve in school, and he even discovered unexpected interests in chess and maintenance work. “Being in a small group with the same people gave me a lot more confidence,” he said. “Everyone was really helpful toward each other.” His remarkable transformation became even more apparent when Simeon—once a struggling student—became one of only 105 national recipients of the Horatio Alger Scholarship. His story stands as a testament to the power of support and the resilience in every person.

A Single Mother's Fight and Triumph

Once a happily married and successful business owner, Tara's world was turned upside down when her husband started using drugs and became abusive—ultimately landing in prison and leaving Tara a single mom. As financial hardship and emotional trauma took a toll on her children, Tara was often away working two jobs to stay afloat. Help arrived when a school counselor suggested LSS CARES Wraparound Services. This comprehensive program provided Tara crucial lifelines like financial guidance, counseling for her family and help accessing Medicaid. As her world stabilized, her children once again began to thrive. Today, Tara says she’s grateful for Wraparound services and the support she received from her Family Partner, Angel. “My heart is totally different because of what I went through,” she explained. “There are so many people who think they can do it on their own, but that extra help really does make a difference.”

STORY

| FOSTER CARE

The Hornick Family and Their Life-Changing Journey

Ku's remarkable journey began when he was born three months premature, requiring intensive care in the NICU. That’s when his path crossed with Sara Hornick and her husband—a couple who, after struggling with infertility, began working with LSS to become trained and licensed foster parents. The Hornicks embraced Ku with open arms, reshaping their lives to meet his advanced medical needs. During this time—including when Ku was urgently life-flighted to the hospital at seven-months-old—LSS was there to provide support and assistance. “I’ll never forget the kindness I received from the LSS team. They cared for me while I was caring for my baby. They brought me clothes, blankets, food, anything I needed,” Sara said. Today, Ku is happy and healthy. Meanwhile, the Hornicks have been blessed to care for 26 children as foster parents. “That’s the best thing about LSS. You aren’t just a case number, you are human. You are family,” said Sara.

Finding a Balance: A Journey from Debt to Stability

Stephanie's life fell into disarray following job loss and a difficult divorce. Despite her courageous efforts to adjust—purchasing a house and establishing a rental unit—rising debt swallowed her income. Seeking help, Stephanie turned to LSS Center for Financial Services, where she found Dana, a compassionate financial counselor. With Dana’s guidance and a tangible debt management plan, Stepanie is making headway on her debt while leaving room to enjoy life. Her story proves that with the right support and a plan in place, anyone who faces financial hardship can get back on the road to stability. "Sometimes you just have to ask for help. It's never wrong to reach out to somebody who knows more than you—they could have a better path for you to take," she said.
