A TEXAS-SIZED SURPRISE
Look for wily 8-point warriors By Dave Fulson
For Lone Star Outdoor News The first cool winds of fall signal one of my favorite rituals, the preparation for deer season in Texas. My career has allowed me to chase this iconic species from South Texas to northern Alberta, but no matter where I roam, Texas always draws me back to my roots — white-tailed deer. I have bounced back and forth for more than 40 years between my roles as hunter, guide and outfitter in pursuit of this iconic species. Like most Texans, I cut my teeth on whatever hunting invite I could secure, or whatever hunt I could afford. Size, or even sex of the deer weren’t the driving force. Just the thrill of being in the whitetail woods, rifle in hand, was living the dream in my young hunter’s heart. As the years passed, the lure of big antlers, and the dedication to their pursuit became a near religion. Nothing wrong with that, mind you, but I have evolved with age, and score sheets have lost their importance. They have been replaced by the simple pleasure of hunting mature bucks, regardless of how much they stretch the tape measure. The term management buck became a common phrase as the interest in growing bigger bucks swept Texas and the nation. Ranchers and property owners started managing both the habitat and their deer herds, with the goal of creating genetically superior bucks, which of course meant bigger antlers. Depending on the goals of the property in question, biologists and game managers quickly understood that age, habitat, nu-

trition and genetics were the big factors in growing bigger and better-scoring bucks. But not all bucks benefit from the genetic makeup that other bucks on the same property, and of the same age class, possess. For example, particular ranch management programs want its breeding age bucks of 4 years or older to have at least 10 points. And lets assume there are plenty of bucks like that available to breed. What then happens to 4 year or older bucks that produce only eight points, or some other trait that does not fit the desired genetic profile? You have a management buck. This is not an inferior deer. Many management bucks are studs, and often they are aggressive, dominant breeding bucks. Their only sin is not growing enough tines to fit the management plan. Management hunts are increasingly available, and the reduced prices, when compared to top-end trophy buck hunts, mean a shot at these fully mature bucks is a possibility for most hunters. Outfitters, guides and top ranches all advertise their hunts, accommodations, and hunt packages in this highly competitive game. And most feature hunts for management bucks. In fact, some of the smartest, hard to pattern, and prized bucks I have ever taken were wily 8-point warriors worthy of the effort it took to take them. Do you want a great whitetail hunt that lacks nothing in excitement, and only a few less inches on a score sheet? Book a management buck hunt. You will not be disappointed!

FIVE TEXAS RANCHES TO SELL IN CALL FOR OFFERS CAMPAIGN
In a marketing campaign initiative that proved successful in the sales of some of Texas’ biggest and best known name ranches, including the W.T. Waggoner Ranch, the Broseco, The Reserve & Sulphur Bluff, and the KC7 in West Texas, Icon Global Group announced a portfolio of five Texas ranches in a Call For Offers campaign, offering a mix of properties and multiple options in purchasing alternatives for buyers and investors. The slate of ranches includes two large West Texas properties, the 7,700-acre Fox Canyon hunting ranch in the Davis Mountains, and the Lely Ranch, an almost 70,000acre mega ranch adjacent to famous Big Bend National Park, the Cibolo Creek Lodge and contiguous to the Presidio County International Airport. First-time hunters get more chances for that first deer By Craig Nyhus
Lone Star Outdoor News In 2012, Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation was formed with the goal of “creating hunters for a lifetime.” Since then, many new hunters have taken their first hunting adventure, receiving a true hunting camp experience, and read about it in the pages of Lone Star Outdoor News. Although hunters of all ages were taken, the focus remained on young adults who had the desire to hunt, but for whatever reason, never had the opportunity. “They are the forgotten group,” said foundation board member David J. Sams. “There are several fine nonprofits that introduce the activity to youngsters and children from the inner city, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into future hunters. I recognized the forgotten group was the educated professionals who have never had the chance to hunt. Spending the money to go hunt a deer for the first time is very confusing. If a young adult isn’t taken as a child, the chance of him or her hunting as an adult is pretty low.” Now, several other groups are offering mentored hunts, offering chances for adults to get involved in hunting. “After eight years of proving this model works, several other groups are taking our idea to the next level,” Sams said. “It’s a big sign of flattery that the idea is being copied.” Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Select state parks and wildlife management areas will conduct mentored hunting workshops designed to introduce first-time hunters to the hunting experience, educate them on the skills they will need to be successful in the field and build a foundation for their hunting tradition. These workshops are followed by a mentored hunt on the area. Mentored Hunting Permits required for these workshops are offered to qualified first-time hunters. This season, the hunts and workshops are offered at nine state parks and wildlife management areas. Stewards of the Wild Young adults learning to hunt from their peers can jumpstart their way into a hunting lifestyle. That’s the goal of Stewards of the Wild, the young professionals group within the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation. Targeting members from ages 21-45, first-time or novice hunters have the chance to participate in mentored hunts throughout the year, and the hunts are mentored by other members of the group, teaching the new hunters wildlife conservation and emphasizing cooking, processing and eating wild game. Texas Wildlife Association Texas Wildlife Association, which has taken thousands of youth hunters through its Youth Hunting Program, expanded the program this year through its Adult Mentored Hunts, focusing on novice hunters with an interest in forging a connection between conservation hunting and sustainable eating. The mentored hunts are typically 3 days/2 nights and consist of firearms training and safety, harvest shot placement techniques and a personal guide/mentor for each hunter. Participants also will learn valuable skills related to skinning, butchering and cooking techniques of wild game. Sams said he’s glad to see the opportunities for new adult hunters on the increase. “We are still doing all the hunts we can,” he said. “But these groups have more resources and can give that first hunting experience to more new hunters. “The more people we introduce to the passion, the better. It’s all about growing our industry and giving back.”

Celebrating a century of deals Charles Singleton Middleton rode into Lubbock on horseback in 1898. After being the first chief of police in newly formed Lubbock, he started a real estate firm in 1920. Now, 100 years later, Chas S. Middleton and Son is a fourth-generation, family-owned farm and ranch real estate specialty firm. “There are some of these ranches I’ve sold five times over the years,” Sam Middleton, who has been with the firm since 1971, said. “We’ve had a hand in a lot of the major ranch sales in West Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. And we did 28 ranch deals with T. Boone Pickens.” Charlie Middleton said the firm has been blessed with some tremendous listings. “They came only after three generations of hard work before me,” he said.

New hunting store a gateway to Big Country A new hunting store opened in the Big Country on Sept. 5. Located in Hamlin, about 30 miles northwest of Abilene and straddling Jones and Fisher counties, the store, called Big Country Outfitters and Silencio Outdoors, has been a two-year effort by owner Chris Allen. “The city worked with us to help develop some new business for all of the hunters who come through here,” Allen said. “Hamlin is right on Highway 83 and the store is right off the highway, at the red light in the heart of town.” After buying and remodeling a building, highway construction delayed the opening, and COVID-19 delayed it some more. “We finally decided to just pick a date and open,” Allen said. “It’s a full hunting and gun store.” The store carries all types of feed, including Lyssy & Eckel feeds, grains, cottonseed, peanut hulls and black-eyed peas. Gun brands represented include CZ, each of the Benelli brands and Montana Rifle Company. Feeders and blinds are onsite from HB Hunting Products, South Texas Tripods and Feeders and Big Country Fiberglass Blinds. Allen, who also owns Silencio Outdoors, a suppressor manufacturer, said the Hamlin area is prime for a hunting store. “It’s virgin territory for someone to capitalize on the hunting traffic in this area,” he said. “It’s a good stopping point before getting out into the Big Country.” The store is located at 129 South Central Avenue (Highway 83), the “main drag through town.” “You can’t miss it,” Allen said.
