BUILDING YOUR RANCH’S RIFLE RANGE By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News You’ve bought your dream piece of hunting property. Since family, guests and maybe some new hunters will be coming, you want to build a shooting range to sight in rifles. What’s next? Several things need to be considered, but with some equipment, time and effort, it can be done fairly quickly. Tim Sharp, the owner of Small Groups Rifle Range, a private range in Hopkins County, said safety is the number one concern. Finding a spot First, make sure you can legally build the range — not a concern in the middle of nowhere, but the closer you are to a city or town, a check of the regulations from the city and county is wise before moving dirt. Next, Sharp said, is to walk the terrain, avoiding rocky areas where ricochets could occur, and always with an eye downrange. “With satellite images of the neighbors, buildings and where livestock might be, it’s easier to look downrange,” he said. “You want to know what could happen if a bullet gets out.” Sharp prefers shooting to the north or northeast. “The sun is always at your back, and the prevailing winds tend to have you

usually shooting downwind,” he said. “You never want to shoot into the sun.” How long should the shooting range be? “It depends on how much yardage you want,” Sharp said. “Most people want to get as much as they can, but 90 percent of hunting is done within 200 yards.” Should you shoot uphill or downhill? “Much of Texas is pretty flat,” Sharp said. “Use the land to your advantage — I prefer to shoot slightly downhill.” Building a berm Many people underestimate the size of the berm they will need. “You want to be totally covered and stop all projectiles,” Sharp said. “For a good, safe berm you’ll want a minimum clearance of 8 feet above your target. If you’re using a 4x8 sheet of plywood six feet off the ground, that’s a 14-foot berm.” The width should be about the same, covering 8 feet to the left and right — wider if you plan more than one target. It’s more complicated than just dozing a 14-foot pile of dirt, though, because the dirt will settle significantly, not to mention erosion from rain. “You lose a lot from settling,” Sharp said. “Make it bigger than you think.” Some estimates from long-time range builders indicate you can lose one-third of the height of the berm in the first few years.

“Grass and weeds are OK,” Sharp said. “I let things come to root before spraying. Dirt is your best stopper, and the coverage will help keep it there.” Another option is to plant native grasses or rye to help establish a root system on top of the dirt. When moving dirt for the berm, most landowners use existing soil adjacent to the range. “Where I am, it looks like the previous owner took a pasture and scraped up topsoil for the berm, and the grass never recovered,” Sharp said. “Have your dozer operator push the topsoil aside and then scrape the clay underneath. You can replace the topsoil and the grass will come back.” Drainage is another important consideration. “I have one area where I had to put some mulch in,” Sharp said. “Most dozer operators will figure the drainage, but you don’t want to have to wear rubber boots to go check the target.” Sharp said many ranch ranges use one berm to stop bullets from targets at different distances, while others build multiple berms, one behind each target. Another option is more than one shooting bench to shoot at the same target from different distances. And always keep in mind the one overriding principle. “Never take for granted that the bullet is going to stop,” Sharp said. “Dirt is your friend.”

Land as a Legacy, turning properties into family heirlooms Land is a precious commodity. If your acreage has been blessed with natural beauty, then it is even more precious. That’s why there is a new goal for many Texas ranch and farm owners these days: turn the property into a multi-generational legacy, a gathering spot for family and friends to be enjoyed over decades. “More and more of our clients are focusing on turning their properties into a centerpiece of family life, a treasure to be passed on to their children and grandchildren,” said John Jones, president of Shoreline Consulting. “Their original interests might have been operating a ranch to raise animals, or for horseback riding, fishing on ranch ponds or hunting. But now they are focused on these things and more, by enhancing the natural beauty and maximizing the recreational options of their properties. “We help these landowners turn their ranches into year-round recreational retreats for friends and family, with activities appealing to every generation.” Shoreline Consulting is a turnkey ranch design and development firm, with expertise turning both raw and overused properties into the homestead or getaway property that will make your friends want to get their own. “Land is something that is forever,” Jones said. “If we are fortunate enough to be entrusted with land, then proper stewardship of that gift is very important. That stewardship ensures that future generations can enjoy it as we do now.” That driving principle is why Shoreline is helping landowners to maximize the aesthetics and recreational possibilities of their farms and ranches.

10 |

Jones explained a key first step is to evaluate the “bones” of the property in order to ensure that any addition or improvement accentuates and highlights what is inherently present. “Small missteps at this stage can have longlasting impacts,” Jones said. “Simple oversights such as clearing too much brush or opening improper sightlines are pretty difficult to correct.” Shoreline features a wide range of products and services to enhance a ranch, especially those that have a pond or lake. For example, the company offers custom docks including multilevel structures that turn a lake into a gathering place for hours of fishing, swimming, sunning, games and relaxation. Through its association with Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management, Shoreline offers fullservice, expert pond and fishery management as well, including electrofishing surveys, fishery consulting, fish stocking, vegetation control, liming and fertilization and many other lake maintenance and enhancement offerings. The types of improvements that Shoreline specializes in can enhance the ranch’s appeal for generations to come. Or, if landowners decide to sell at some point, they will find that the enhancements have greatly increased their ranch’s value. “In the end, what matters is that your ranch meets its maximum potential to bring you and your family enjoyment,” Jones said. “We will help you get there with our turnkey approach. That’s why we say, we do the dirty work, so you can enjoy the view.”

BUYING THAT

first tractor Determining what you need, assessing costs By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News Congratulations, you now own a hunting ranch. Now you need a tractor. The choices seem endless. With different sizes, horsepower, accessories and attachments, the choices and the costs add up. But what do you really need? At Tellus Equipment, a group of 21 John Deere dealerships in the Hill Country and South Texas, regional manager Andrew Turek said this question might be the most common, especially from new property owners. Turek works with landowners to help understand what they are planning to do to help determine what equipment would be the best choice. “Most are planning to establish food plots, mow, clear roads and shooting lanes, along with areas for blinds and feeders,” he said. “Some may have a few cattle, and most plan some sort of feeding, food plot preparation, tillage and seeding. The 5 or 6 Series tractors with around 100 horsepower are generally good for those chores.” On smaller tracts, hunting ranch owners can downsize. Turek said a 3 Series (25-45 hp) tractor will get the job done for most people. “A compact tractor with a shredder, loader and box blade will do the work,” he said. Andrew Witcher at Hoffpauir Polaris in

Goldwaithe, a New Holland dealer, said most everyone buying property in Central Texas and areas to the west are buying for recreational use as opposed to cattle ranching or farming. “They want equipment to clean the place up,” he said. “Many of the places are full of scrub brush and cedar.” When it comes to tractors, Witcher said the needs and costs vary from equipment for the 35 to 45 hp “weekenders” to 125-hp tractors that can plow 2,000 acres. “The subcompact tractors are good for places up to 60 acres,” he said. “They come with a loader and you need a shredder for the weeds and small brush and a box blade on the back for the roads. If you aren’t using it every day and putting a ton of strain on it, it will do the job.” Witcher said this type of package will run around $30,000, but there are things you can’t do with it. “You can’t do cutters and mulchers,” he said. “Clearing bigger brush would have to be hired out — or you’ll need a skid steer.” Both Witcher and Turek said they are seeing increased interest in adding skid steers to a ranch’s equipment arsenal. “We have been seeing a lot of business trending toward skid steers to clear brush and senderos,” Turek said. “You can clear and shred brush, build fence, dig post holes and pound pipe into the ground.” Witcher said the uses of the skid steer are nearly endless, especially when adding mulchers, cutters or dozer blades. “The most popular is a 75 to 85 horse,”

David J. Sams

he said. “With a mulcher, they turn cedar trees into toothpicks. But the mulcher costs almost as much as the skid steer.” Many ranch owners opt for the cutter attachment that cuts the cedar off at the ground, then the cedar or brush can be piled up and later burned. “Cutters run from $3,500 to $9,000,” Witcher said. “Skid steers can cost $50,000 and up to $70,000.” If there is a lot of cedar or other brush to deal with, there are other options. “You can hire it done,” Turek said. Another alternative to consider is looking at used tractors and equipment, includ-

ing skid steers, to save some costs. When it comes to equipment for seeding fields, Witcher said there is little activity at implement dealers. “I’ve been here 10 years and I’ve never sold a seeder or a drill,” he said. “Most guys have drills that are at least 50 years old.” Another change has been in fence building equipment. “Hardly anyone builds their own fences anymore,” Witcher said. “Everyone hires it done.”

Dreamy riverfront and luxurious living on 1,080 San Saba acres It’s not just the river that rolls and bends for 4.5 miles, but unrivaled hunting, fishing and even a good bit of history make this property special. This is some of the prettiest river property a Texan will ever see with panoramic views of lazy bends and acreage covered with mighty oaks, aged persimmons, mixed timber and fabulous native grasses. A recently completed 6,500-square-foot lodge is exquisite in taste, detail and imagination and is one of the more elaborate homes, ranch or otherwise, you will ever encounter. A newly constructed entry and road leads past the manager’s house — an additional three-bedroom, two-bath home on the property — then passes a shop and exquisite garden on its way to the main house. Unlike too many other river properties, this one allows nearly total access to water as a pickup or mule can transverse most of the riverbank. This part of the Colorado River showcases one of the finest fisheries anywhere with whoppers over 60 pounds caught each year. The whitetail deer herd is impressive for a lowfenced acreage. Cameras have captured the trophy bucks that benefit from years of partnering with the state’s wildlife deer program. Turkeys roost by the river literally by the hundreds. In good years, quail abound in huntable numbers. If you are a history buff, you can actually feel the times gone by with every step where arrowheads and working tools have been left behind by various Native American tribes. The geology of this place is well mapped on The Geological Atlas of Texas, published by the Texas Water Board. The historical consensus is that

this was a flint quarry area that prehistoric man came to regularly. A deep-water free-flowing artesian well — recently drilled at a cost of more than $300,000 — penetrates the entire sequence of sedimentary rock deposited at this location. It is a little more than 3,000 feet deep and extends into the underlying granite. The well flows at about 60 gallons per minute and slightly less than 50 psi. It is presently being used to irrigate hybrid Bermuda grass with excellent results. The artesian pressure will drive eight sprinklers with no pump. The water is also excellent for irrigating many vegetables, especially tomatoes, and has been tested for reverse osmosis. A consultant reported that bottled water quality could be attained if desired and the well will continue to produce at present levels for generations to come. With all of the fish, game and garden, you may never need to go to town again. After what we all experienced in 2020, the notion of self-sufficiency combined with luxury living is more appealing than ever. A plethora of equipment — mules, blinds, feeders, tools, tractors and accompanying accessories — are included in the $8.75 million sales price as are half of the owned mineral rights. Call Tom Stephenson for details and showings.
