Walker’s — the industry leader in hearing protection and enhancement — introduces the new rechargeable FireMax Muff and FireMax Walkie Talkie. The pinnacle in electronic shooting muffs, the all new FireMax is the result of more than three decades of experience. This unit incorporates Walker’s legendary Sound Activated Compression (SAC) protection built into a slim streamlined design. The digital platform includes four frequency modes controlled by silent soft touch digital buttons and is powered by a 2000 mAh rechargeable lithium battery for more than 200 hours of performance protection. The FireMax features a new digital sound processing system that not only incorporates Active Dynamic Sound Suppression, but also includes sophisticated digital circuitry allowing the user to select specific audio modes for boosting desirable sound clarity. The Universal and Power Boost modes enhance general sound to specific levels, while the Clear Voice and Hi-frequency modes can be chosen to better discern conversations and higher-frequency sounds (such as steel impact), respectively. The muffs also come with a new Rubber Tacti-Grip headband and cooling gel earpads to support all day comfort whether you’re wearing them in the field or on the range. Designed to integrate exclusively with the FireMax Muff, the brand new FireMax Walkie Talkie operates on FRS frequency with a main, sub-channel and priority channel. This makes it easy to communicate with others when shooting on the range (large or small) and is a big advantage for placing long-range targets in areas without mobile communication services. Whether on the range or in the field, the FireMax earmuff and FireMax Walkie Talkie combo provides greater communication convenience than conventional hand-held radios and ensures hearing protection is never compromised. THE MOST IMPORTANT BUCK

By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News In December 2020, Gary Hammock, who has hunted mule deer at the Delaware Mountain Ranch since 2016, invited his great-nephew, Jacob McNaughton, and Jacob’s father, Patrick, to hunt with him at the ranch. McNaughton had been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that January, and had been undergoing months of chemotherapy and radiation, along with several surgeries. “Jacob was really excited to go, and he practiced regularly at the range in preparation for his first mule deer hunt,” his cousin, and Gary’s son, Jimbo Hammock, said. “His strength was beginning to fail him, but his will was not.” At the time of the hunt, McNaughton had more on his mind than his illness, as his beloved grandmother, “Nanny,” was in poor health and in the hospital. “Jacob promised her he would get a good buck just for her,” Hammock said. On the first day of the hunt, McNaughton hunted with his father, his friend, Ethan, and Hammock. Around mid-morning, they spotted a herd of deer with lots of does and three bucks, one being a large 4x5. They tried to stalk the buck, a difficult task for McNaughton, but trekked a mile up and down hilltops and draws, before watching the deer bound away into the distance. “He was worn out and a little disappointed, but continued hunting hard,” Hammock said. The evening of the third day, the group hunted the western part of the ranch, and about two hours before dark, pulled over to survey some nearby hillsides. After 15 minutes of glassing, they had seen nothing, and were getting ready to move on. “That’s when Jacob said he heard a voice, whom he believed was from God, telling him to look down into the deep canyon below,” Hammock said. “When he did, bedded in the very bottom, in a patch of cholla cacti, was a lone, mature 5x5 buck, antlers glistening in the West Texas sun.” After pointing out the buck to his dad

Lone Star Outdoor News

and friend, McNaughton was ready to go. For the next hour, Ethan stayed on the ridge as McNaughton and his father slowly maneuvered down and across the slope, trying to remain undetected, closing the distance gap. When they reached the bottom of the canyon, they continued to work slowly toward the old buck — out of sight and with the wind in their face. Once 120 yards away, McNaughton peered over a small knoll to find the muley still unaware of their presence, presenting him with a perfect shot. From a prone position, McNaughton fired a single round from his Mossberg .25-06, passing the bullet straight through both lungs. The buck lunged forward and ran about 40 yards before crumpling over backwards. “Jacob, out of pure emotion, sheer exhaustion, and adrenaline overload, began vomiting and crying,” Hammock said. “Together the three men approached the downed deer, with Patrick and Ethan helping to hold Jacob up as he walked. Jacob kept repeating that this deer was for Nanny.” After a difficult retrieval, the group made it back to camp to join up with the other hunters and tell the story. “It wasn’t long after that, they got the call that Nanny had passed away. The emotion flowing around camp that evening was difficult to comprehend,” Hammock said. “In Jacob’s words, ‘This is the most important deer I have ever shot.”’ The buck’s head and cape were taken to Scott’s Taxidermy in Orange Grove. “When Jacob’s health got worse, I called Scott Herschap at the shop and explained the situation,” Hammock said. “He dropped what he was doing and expedited the should mount.” This past July, the 163-inch, 5x5 buck was received by McNaughton and was hung on the wall. About two weeks later, McNaughton, at age 26, died at his Corpus Christi home on Aug. 1, 2021, after 1 1/2 years of fighting colon cancer. The buck remains on the wall.

NEVER FILL YOUR FEEDER AGAIN Bob Freeman and his sons love to hunt, but like all busy people, sometimes struggled with getting out to the lease to check and fill feeders. That struggle was the impetus for Custom Game Feeding. “We’re all hunters,” Freeman said. “We decided we wanted to fill feeders for folks who didn’t have time to do it.” Freeman said both hunters on deer leases and ranch owners who are having trouble finding workers are customers. “We help guys who are stretched for time,” he said. “We do both corn and protein feeders — whatever they need.” Other hunters may have filled feeders weeks before their hunt, but sit at home wondering if the timer is still working or if the batteries died — things that could spoil the hunt when they arrive. “We’ll fix feeders if we can,” Freeman said. “And we will change batteries and check and reset timers.” For those without the time to meet at the ranch, Custom Game Feeding can handle everything over the phone or on a web call. “We learn where the feeders are on the OnX app,” Freeman said. “Then we can tag the feeders, the gates and get the gate codes, and we’re good to go. It’s a pretty simple process.” Freeman is from the Fort Worth area, and his son, Sawyer, is from San Angelo, so they are able to reach across the state with their services. “And if it’s too far for Sawyer or me, we hire local firefighters to help,” Freeman said. “They are reliable and they’re good on ladders.”

THE ALL-PURPOSE HUNTING SHOTGUN FROM BERETTA Beretta has introduced its new A300 Ultima in both 12 and 20 gauges, with the classic mechanisms of the reliable A300 platform with new enlarged controls, an improved receiver and the Beretta Kick-Off recoil reduction system. Made in the USA, the A300 Ultima is built tough to withstand adverse conditions out on the hunt and to perform when you need it most. The added features to the A300 line come without an increase in price, making the A300 Ultima your choice for hunting waterfowl, upland game or dove. The A300 Ultima black synthetic model retails for $799 and the camo versions for $899. The new Ultima line features enhanced user interfaces and recoil reduction technology that allows for Beretta to state the A300 Ultima is the best shotgun in its class. The new A300 Ultima Black Synthetic stock adds a soft touch comb and included Kick-Off recoil reduction technology, which allows for recoil mitigation never before seen at this price point. The A300 Ultima is designed for hunters. An oversized bolt release and cross-bolt safety is enlarged, along with the loading port, making the shotgun perfect for wintertime hunters who often handle and operate their guns with gloved hands. The top of the A300 Ultima’s receiver was lowered and a wide, 7x7mm stepped rib with a bead with a fiber optic front makes lining up and finding the target highly visible. Beretta’s MobilChoke allows for your choice of choke options. As with other A300 models, the Kick-Off recoil reduction system, a hydraulic damping system, reduces felt recoil significantly — Beretta says by 44 percent, a big plus for avid hunters and compromised shoulders. The Benelli Lupo, introduced just a year ago, has become one of the most popular and most recognized bolt-action centerfire rifles on the market. The rifle is now offered in three additional calibers, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Win. and .243 Win., joining the three original calibers of .3006 Springfield, .300 Win. Mag. and .270 Win. Renowned for making high-quality shotguns, Benelli brings expertise and Italian craftsmanship to create the highlyaccurate centerfire Lupo rifle with precise sub-MOA accuracy, superb ergonomics, patented adjustability and unprecedented recoil reduction. The Lupo rifles are built with the same innovative features as the originals. It all starts with seven exclusive Benelli patents for a gun that provides a truly customized fit for top performance handling. The rifle features a chassis-style construction, built from an alloy lower receiver, and fitted with a synthetic stock and forend. The stock incorporates Benelli’s patented Progressive Comfort recoil-reducing system and Combtech cheek pad for comfortable shooting. The Benelli Lupo achieves repeatable, consistent, sub-MOA accuracy thanks to a precision CRIO-treated and free-floating barrel, which is securely bedded (steelto-steel) into the alloy chassis receiver. This accuracy is unleashed with a crisp, adjustable trigger.

A21i1PG

Benelli expands LUPO offerings An innovative barrel attachment system creates an unaltered chamber and perfect alignment on every gun. In addition to great accuracy, the Benelli Lupo’s design features modular adjustability to provide the perfect fit between shooter and rifle. The chassisstyle configuration of a separate stock, receiver and forend allow the shooter to customize the Lupo to one of 12 dropand-cast positions with the included shims and can be expanded to 36 postions by utilizing optional combs. Finger reach to the trigger is also adjustable with included spacers that can be placed between the receiver and the stock. The Benelli Lupo tames recoil with a patented built-in Progressive Comfort system and a Combtech cheek pad. The double-stack box magazine is incredibly easy to load in or out of the gun. A twoposition, tang-mounted safety offers ambidextrous manipulation. Airtouch Grip surfaces provide a safe and firm hold on the rifle. A threaded muzzle (5/8x24 thread) gives the option of adding a muzzle brake or suppressor. The short bolt throw quietly chambers and ejects rounds for quick and smooth follow-up shots.

Marking

his spot By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News As the sun was setting, Carson and Lili Keys were about to leave the deer stand when Carson went to draw the curtain and noticed a big buck silhouetted in the western sky. “He was licking and sniffing the branch, and he scratched his hoofs on the ground three or four times before walking off,” Lili said. “Too bad we didn’t have a camera with us.” Rubs and scrapes are often seen by hunters, but they wonder if they should hunt these areas and if the buck will return. Bucks make rubs and scrapes to communicate by scent, helping them mark their territory and showing their presence. Also, rubs often show the bucks are ready to breed, and studies have shown rubs increase as the rut nears. The rubs are created by the buck raking his antlers on saplings, brush and small trees, resulting in shredded and peeled bark. At the same time, the buck releases scent from its forehead glands as they are pressed into the bark. Research at the University of Georgia has shown that mature bucks make most of the rubs, and a Michigan study found that yearling bucks make about half as many rubs per season as older bucks. Scrapes are made by the buck pawing at the ground, while depositing scent from its interdigital glands between the toes of its front hoofs. Also, the buck may urinate over its tarsal glands on its lower legs to distribute more scent. Like the Keys witnessed, the bucks lick and gum an overhanging limb and deposit scent on the limb by rubbing it with their forehead and eye glands. While bucks often use the same scrape, it may not produce during hunting hours, as a Wildlife Society study showed that bucks make 85 percent of their scrape visits after dark, while does check out the scrapes 75 percent of the time after dark. At the ranch where the Keys saw the buck, a trail camera was placed to view the rub and scrapes, and the buck did indeed return, and near the end of the season, began visiting a nearby feeder. One of the ranch owners, Steve Hudson, was hunting when he returned and made the shot.

LAZY CK’S CAMP REACHES, TEACHES FUTURE HUNTERS Located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, The Lazy CK Ranch boasts both native and exotic species on the 11,000acre ranch, making it the perfect place for new hunters to learn. The new Lazy CK Future Hunters Camp, a week-long educational course, is focused on first-time hunters. The mission is to have new hunters completely ready to go out and hunt on their own after completing the camp. “We are literally witnessing the next generation of hunters being created,” said Lazy CK’s General Manager Allen Robinson. “And it is our hope that they will continue the education and hand down the knowledge on and on.” The camp is offered in three different themed weeks: Industry Week; Open Week for ages 10 and up; and a Women’s Week. Industry week will focus on individuals who work in the outdoor industry but don’t have much experience in the outdoors. The course covers it all, from hunter education and certification, rifle and bow training, shot placement, caping and field dressing, butchering and cooking wild game. Campers will even learn about recommendations for gear and apparel. At the end of the week, they will walk away with new skills and a deep understanding of conservation through hunting. With a small group of only 10 participants per camp, Lazy CK is able to work one-onone with each student to make sure they are confident in the field, blind or wherever they may find themselves hunting in the future. “Newbies, novices, intermediate — doesn’t matter — the camp will benefit anyone,” said Carly Brasseux, of Miss Pursuit, who attended one of the camps in July. “I’ve been hunting for 10-plus years, but I was only taught by one person. Having another person’s perspective and guidance was beneficial to expanding my knowledge as a hunter. There’s always something new to learn.” For those interested in attending or recommending a Future Hunters Camp, contact Allen Robinson.
