The Ducks Unlimited Regional Sanctioned Calling Contest, which is a qualifier for the World Duck Calling Championship in Stuttgart, Arkansas, kicks off the day; last year’s Regional winner, Haiden Richard, is the reigning World Champion. The DUX Championship Series will follow Saturday’s sanctioned contest with individual and team meats for Mallard calling. On Sunday, April 10, the DUX Championship Series will continue with individual and team meats for Specklebelly and Canada Goose calling.

DUX will showcase trick shooter demonstrations from Texas native Travis Mears in the Shooting Village throughout the weekend. DUX also offers hands-on firearms testing from leading manufacturers, ATV ride and drives, and special appearances from outdoor personalities.

Industry leaders and professionals will be conducting demonstrations and seminars all weekend on an assortment of topics from cooking to power tool demonstrations, product debuts, and much more!

SUPER BLACK EAGLE 3 IN 28-GAUGE For 2022, Benelli raised the bar in the growing “sub-gauge” movement with the release of eight new 3-inch chamber 28-gauge SBE 3 models.

The all-new Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 in 3-inch chamber 28-gauge answers the growing call of waterfowlers who hunt flooded timber in the southern regions as well as the beaver dams and cattails of the north, where tight quarters favor the sub-gauge. And with more hunters seeking smallergauge shotguns, the new SBE 3 28-gauge 3-inch models fit the needs of waterfowlers looking for greater challenges with a scaled-to-suit gun.

The new SBE 3 models continue the unfailing performance and rugged construction that has made the Super Black Eagle the first choice among discriminating shotgunners yet do so in a lighter weight, faster-handling package ideally suited for those decoying birds in flooded timber. Offered in Crio-treated 26- and 28-inch barrel lengths, the 28-gauge SBE 3s are a modest 5.5 and 5.6 pounds, respectively, with 47.5- and 49.5-inch overall lengths.

A total of eight models mark the 28-gauge SBE 3’s introduction, differentiated by barrel length and stock finish. Available stocks include synthetic, Realtree Max-5™, Realtree Timber, GORE OPTIFADE and Mossy Oak Bottomland.

While these 28-gauge SBE 3 models work with standard 2 3/4-inch shotshells, hunters can tap into the new class of 3-inch loads rolling off the premier ammunition lines. This diversity significantly broadens the 28-gauge SBE 3’s field applications, with a single platform that is lighter, faster and easily adaptable to a broad range of hunting environments.

The SBE 3 3-inch 28-gauge comes in a customfitted hard case with a brace of Crio choke tubes — IC and M extended tubes and C, IM, and F flush tubes — plus a choke wrench and shim kit for drop and cast adjustment. Additional features include an upsized bolt handle, enlarged bolt release, and oversized safety for easy operation when wearing gloves. A carbon-fiber rib, contributing to the shotgun’s light weight, ends in a fiber-optic red-bar

front sight for enhanced visibility in low light hunting conditions.

The goal is to reduce the time it takes to get big fish in your pond, with fish that grow faster, grow bigger and have aggressive traits that increase the chance they will hit your lure.

BOSS Shotshells and The Crippling Reality The Bad: Too many birds are lost to crippling every single year in the U.S. alone. Although that number is tough to pin down, one thing is for certain, and we can all agree on, it’s far, far too many.

The Ugly: As waterfowlers and wingshooters go, that’s 100 percent on us.

The Good?

Together, we can drastically reduce that number — a huge nugget of hope we all should celebrate.

In a time when it seems like our hunting heritage is always under siege, imagine if we, as a community, commit to reducing that awful number of cripples. What would reducing it by even half look like? For one, it puts a significant number of more birds on the nesting grounds each year. Now imagine what increased breeding success could mean. Maybe we’d get more than a single pintail and a few more scaup per day. Maybe mallard limits in certain regions could follow.

Maybe the anti-hunting crowd will ease up a little — but we’re not holding our breath. In the end, more birds for everyone would be a fantastic thing for our hunts, our legacies and our hopes for future generations. All we have to do is do our part and that starts with doing what’s right.

But how?

By changing the narrative. Rethink not only the way you’re hunting, but the tools with which you hunt. Start with a better shell than tired old steel, and we’re not just saying that because we’re a shell company. We’re saying this because it’s the truth, evidenced by the massive decrease in birds dying from lead poisoning after lead became outlawed. That’s proof that the actions of the waterfowling community can make a huge difference without the government stepping in and telling us how to hunt. After all, sportsmen were the original conservationists.

In a way, voluntarily walking away from lead was the right thing to do. But it came with a new set of consequences. Whereas we were poisoning less birds using nontoxic steel, the issue of crippling birds became a much bigger deal. Steel, no matter what size shot or the absurd speed it claims to reach, just doesn’t hit or penetrate nearly as well. And while the advent of heavier, denser non-toxic shot options were great, they cost an arm and a leg, putting that level of lethality out of reach for most hunters. For years, we’ve had a new reality: We’re poisoning less but now we’re crippling more.

That’s when you can start finetuning shell and shot size, but again most start with the BOSS Shorty.

Next — and this one’s key — ‘No Your Shot.’ We’re not just talking about saying no to skybusting. That’s amateur hour. We’re asking that you pull off a bird if you know

the shot is pushing your effective range. More birds will come, and you’ll reduce your number of cripples even more.

Last, we’d ask you marinate on what you’ve just read. Think about that number and how small changes in our collective thinking can really make a big difference for the birds. WELCOME TO SOLITUDE SPORTING CLUB From the moment our day started with robust coffee until it ended with a dry martini (shaken, not stirred), our day was filled with a combined luxury and simplicity that made us not want it to end.

My friends and I had the privilege of a weekend at Solitude Sporting Club.

This beautiful ranch in Alvord is home to both the Solitude Sporting Club and to Solitude Thoroughbreds. As we drove through the stone-winged gates and then down the drive shrouded by magnificent trees, we felt like we were going somewhere special; and we were. We had a day filled with shooting from both the 5-stand and the wooded 12 station course.

Whether you shoot competitively or you are out with friends, family or associates to hone your shotgunning skills, you are going to find this to be a shooting paradise!

The duck hunters in our group marveled at the only private professionally designed waterfowl impoundment of its kind in North Texas. Imagine pintail, wigeon, mallards and teal buzzing in as your bird dog awaits the rewarding retrieval ahead.

Some of us had shot enough for the day, so the owners took us on a tour of the rest of the ranch which backs up to the grasslands. The large dove fields will keep hunters and their guests busy, while not having to worry about crowds.

Upland hunts for quail, chukar and pheasant, along with fishing the eight ponds stocked with bass, bluegill and catfish, add to Solitude’s allure.

Finally, we went over to see the horses— not just any horses — record breaking stallions and mares. From there

we enjoyed sweet tea and snacks at the pool. The team there tells us it’s only going to get better. Construction is underway on the pavilion and luxurious cabins. For right now, the simple pleasure of being outdoors on this beautiful ranch, the warmth of the hospitality, the outrageously good food and drink, and then ending the evening in the trophy room around a fire laughing about the day we just had, is what a sporting club should be.

The Ducks Unlimited Expo (DUX) is a sportsman’s paradise to see, try and buy the latest and greatest that the outdoor industry has to offer.

In the DUX Shooting Village attendees will have the opportunity to test and purchase firearms from leading manufacturers.

FAQs

What Gun Ranges are at DUX? DUX features a Shotgun range, a Rifle & Pistol 100 Yard Range and a Rifle 300 Yard Range. Besides shooting lanes designated for each firearm factory on the Ranges, DUX also features General Lanes where you can flexibly shoot a mix of most brands of firearms in one lane.

Can I purchase a firearm while at DUX? Firearms will be available for purchase at DUX. Firearm Factories are attending and each factory hosts a shooting tent on the range with firearms on display and available for live shooting. If you choose to purchase a firearm your order will be placed and processed with our DUX FFL dealer Reeds Family Outdoor Outfitters. Reeds will then ship your firearm, with free shipping, after the event to your local FFL for final paperwork and background check.

You will not leave DUX with a purchased firearm, as no firearms will be transferred on-site at DUX. What does it mean “Buy at DUX & Earn Bucks for the Ducks”?

A portion of all purchases of firearms and ammunition at DUX is donated to Ducks Unlimited. Five to ten percent of all purchase amounts made will be provided to DU in a payment, net of sales tax, credit card and delivery fees.

Is there a cost to shoot at DUX? There is a minimal fee of $5 per shooting ticket, which is good for any type of ammo needed to shoot the Demo Guns at the range. Each ticket is redeemed for 5 shots at any shooting booth on the shotgun and/or rifle/pistol range.

You can purchase one or multiple tickets at the shooting ticket tent at the entrance of the shooting village.

Are there age restrictions for shooting?

Yes, Archery, BB, pellet, and air rifle all have no age requirements. Rifle and shotgun have a restriction of 12 & over, while pistol is restricted to those 21 & over.

Will eye and ear protection be provided?

Eye and ear protection will be provided and required by all shooters.

Do I need to complete a waiver to participate in shooting?

Yes, all attendees who would like to participate in any activity at DUX will need to complete a waiver each day.
