Anti-poaching work continues thanks to

Hunters CARE What happens when there is no hunting in Africa due to travel restrictions?

Poaching goes on the rise. With no incoming revenue, safari operators cannot pay for the anti-poaching scouts and patrols that protect wildlife. These patrols remove snare lines, apprehend perpetrators and create a deterrent presence.

DSC and the DSC Foundation stepped up quickly to fill the void, creating the Hunters CARE (COVID Anti-poaching Relief Effort). This program provides relief in the form of grants that will keep boots on the ground in the struggle to prevent poaching.

By the end of October 2020, 26 grants

by DSC and 21 grants from DSCF have gone to 10 countries in order to protect an impressive 24 million acres of habitat and wildlife.

In their own words, safari operators speak about the loss of revenue due to

the pandemic, and the immediate impact of grants from DSC and DSC Foundation.

Danene van der Westhuyzen, Aru Game Lodge, Namibia, said, “It's been really a tough year. We all are struggling to survive, but luckily, we all have incredible amounts of passion to keep our businesses going. Thank you, DSC and DSC Foundation, for what you have done for all of us.”

Arthur Baisly, HHK Safaris, Zimbabwe, said, “The area that we look after is 800,000 acres at the moment. With COVID-19 and no clients, we have had to reduce our running costs and we sent half of the staff off with no pay. And now with the finances from the DSC, and the DSC Foundation, we are able to reinstate those scouts and get our operation up and running back to normal.”

“We are in what has to be the most

difficult time in the history of hunting in the African continent. We are trying to keep our operation of 180,000 acres, with 68 full time staff, employed 365 days a year,” said Dale Des Fountain, Des Fountain Safaris, South Africa. “My company, as well as other operators throughout Africa, is immensely grateful to the DSC and the DSC Foundation and its membership for the grants they made available.”

Buzz Charlton, Dande Safaris, Zimbabwe, said, “When we should all be hunting, we do not have a single hunt coming through this year. What we found over this COVID pandemic is that the poaching has skyrocketed. We have invested too heavily in looking after our wildlife to let this go unchecked. DSC grants have helped immensely.”

“There was a huge poaching endemic to the area. The first few days we really

couldn't keep up, but we made a dramatic impact after five or six days,” said Bruce Cronje, Nyamazana Safaris, Zimbabwe. “The team has come into contact with the local stakeholders, and I can't tell you how many times they've come up to me and my team and thanked us for being here. And they are very grateful for the DSC funding that has made this all possible.”

Neil Duckworth, Mokore Safaris, Mozambique, said, “With this funding from DSC, we have been able to do essential day and night patrols. We have removed some really big snare lines, the biggest snare line had over 80 snares in one line.

Obviously, these snare lines can do massive damage to our wildlife populations, and so it's essential that we keep men on the ground, day in, day out, removing the snares and protecting the wildlife.”

LAKES, MANAGEMENT TAKE CENTER STAGE Ranch owners have spent more time at their properties this year than any other. And often, they need some help.

“There has been a significant renewed interest,” said Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management owner John Jones. “I’ve seen more property utilization this year than in any of the last 17 years.”

Lochow Ranch both builds and manages lakes and ponds, and Jones said construction of new lakes is at an all-time high.

“There has been a lot of lake building for the purpose of livestock watering with the associated benefits of increased property value and opportunities,” he said. “We’re building more new ones than ever. There has been an urban rush into rural areas. People are working from their ranches or using them as getaways with extended family.”

What about the fish in your lakes or ponds?

“Having a sound monitoring program is essential for maintaining self-sustaining fisheries,” Jones said.

“Each lake on your property is an individual entity, only all of your animals are hidden from sight.”

The program deals with familiar problems, including drought, heavy rains and mitigation of predator impacts.

“We’ll talk about how to establish fundamental management practices (feeding/fertilizer programs, habitat improvement, bass harvest, vegetation control) and how having a firm foundation can help your lake thrive through seasonal disturbances (flood, drought, predators),” Jones said.

The recent pandemic has had a positive side effect

when it comes to rural properties.

“So many of our clients say they are doing what they do for their kids and grandkids,” Jones said.

“This year, they actually used the ranch and lakes with them, and it was even better than what they imagined.”

Like many folks with rural land, Jones spent a good portion of the year based out of his ranch with his family.

“It was the best six months of my life,” he said.

“Spending real country time with my wife and four young kids is nothing short of a win.”

The past year has created some new dynamics in ranch ownership.

“We’ve seen an increased focus on year-round amenities at the ranch,” Jones said. “Fishing pressure is up ten-fold. Docks are a popular new feature for families who want to spend time fishing, swimming and entertaining by the lake. And we’re seeing an influx of first-time ranch owners who want help with everything from lakes to deer feeders and hunting blinds.”

Lochow Ranch’s biologists and fleet of trucks are based in Bryan, Texas, from where they manage more than 6,000 lakes in Texas and its surrounding states.

Lochow Ranch also has a monthly retainer program where fisheries biologists visit the property monthly, closely monitoring your lakes and addressing potential problems. In all of the company’s services, the goals and preferences of the landowner are paramount in creating a personalized ranch for the whole family to enjoy.

SET YOUR DEER UP FOR SUCCESS Feeding your deer herd during and after rut in the fall and winter paves the way for your bucks, does, and fawns.

With fewer hours of daylight in the fall and winter, the deer may not be seen at the feeders, but they will utilize the nutrition if available.

Feeding bucks through winter Even though bucks are in hard rack and achieved their antler size for the year, they can lose 1030 percent of their body weight due to increased activity and decreased food intake during the rut and subsequent winter. Feeding bucks during the fall and winter allow bucks to regain weight they may have lost during the rut.

Bucks entering the spring in good body condition can utilize the nutrients they consume for antler growth rather than merely regaining the weight the lost the previous season. Fall and winter feeding does not need to be the high protein diets that allowed the deer to reach their genetic potential for antler growth.

A well-balanced diet of 16-percent protein and added fat and minerals to support reproduction is of greater benefit than just corn during this time of year.

Feeding does through winter After a summer of producing milk for one to three fawns, a doe’s body weight and body condition has decreased. Just like the bucks, regaining the lost weight and condition is critical for reproductive success and for surviving the winter.

A study conducted at Washington State University in mule deer showed that digestibility energy intake the month prior to the breeding season impacted pregnancy rate and rate of twinning. Additionally,

In both cases, the fawns have watched their does consume the supplemental feed and have started nibbling it as well. Weaning is a period of stress and having an additional source of nutrition, like supplemental feed, supports the fawns’ needs during this period of transition.

The importance of supplemental feeding in the spring and summer to support antler growth is a common practice. Continuing to feed deer in the fall and winter is also important to support the nutrient requirements of all classes of deer to support their body weight and body condition to continue to have a successful program the following year.

RELIVE THE ADVENTURE Kanati is passionate about helping their clients relive their adventures through beautiful taxidermy. It was that passion that initially spurred Wes Good to begin Kanati Taxidermy Studio. Two decades later, Kanati has grown into a team of 20 professional taxidermy artists, craftsmen and support personnel, all working together to provide an unparalleled taxidermy experience.

Kanati receives trophies from all over the world, creating mounts with incredible attention to detail and lasting quality. The team of knowledgeable artisans works with clients to preserve the memory of their hunting experience with great care, superior craftsmanship and a deep reverence for each animal’s natural beauty.

Over the years, as the importing of some hunting trophies became more difficult, the Kanati team recognized a common dilemma among many hunters. Hunters were searching for a way to relive their adventure, even if they were unable to bring their trophy home. That is why Kanati began to develop methods of creating realistic wildlife replicas. These replica mounts are a way to preserve the memory of the hunt even when the trophy never leaves the field.

Realizing the replica mounts offered by others were known for looking fake and unconvincing, Kanati refused to purchase the same standard, plastic replica forms sold by wholesale vendors.

Starting with elephant and rhino replicas, they developed an in-house, proprietary process which allowed them to personally perfect and

control every detail. The elephant and rhino replicas are made with a unique composite that is slightly porous and mimics the look and texture of real skin. Using field photos and measurements, the replicas are built to the specifications of each unique trophy. They are designed to look as close to the real thing as possible.

The most recent addition to Kanati’s replica collection is polar bears. No corners are cut here, either. The process starts by handsculpting the body armature of the bear to be anatomically correct in every aspect. After the body of the bear has been shaped, the timeconsuming process of hand-placing and layering the artificial hair begins. Often, individual hairs are meticulously placed to create the most convincing and life-like effect. As the final step, coloration is added to the artificial hair to complete the realism and closely match the unique polar bear being replicated.

In addition, Kanati has the capability of replicating many other species. Whether it is a taxidermy mount or a replica, Kanati is dedicated to preserving the memory of their clients’ hunts so they can relive their greatest adventures.

DSC’s first Conservation Trailblazer Award

Clay Brewer was selected as the inaugural winner of DSC's Conservation Trailblazer Award. This award celebrates the contribution of wildlife professionals to the field of game and non-game wildlife conservation, including wildlife and habitat management, applied research and policy.

Brewer will be presented the award, plus a $10,000 contribution toward his work in wildlife conservation, at the 2021 DSC Convention.

Brewer, who is the conservation director and bighorn sheep program lead of The Wild Sheep Foundation, was nominated for the award by Texas Bighorn Society President Dr. Sam Cunningham with support letters from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Executive Director Carter Smith, Wild Sheep Foundation President Gray Thornton and Texas Bighorn Society Board Member Emeritus Tommy Caruthers.

"We would like to recognize his long-time dedication to the conservation and reestablishment of wildlife, especially bighorn sheep in the U.S. and Canada and desert bighorn sheep in the Southwest U.S., Texas and Mexico," Cunningham wrote in his nominating letter.

DSC Executive Director Corey Mason said Brewer's career epitomizes what can be accomplished for wildlife and wild places through dedication, collaboration and selfless work.

Brewer began his career at TPWD as a wildlife biologist in Central Texas and worked up the ranks to Regional Director of Region II. He built a solid partnership with many landowners recognizing that desert bighorns move across the landscape and that landowners are an integral part of desert bighorn management in Texas. These efforts were the benchmark in the reestablishment and continued conservation of the desert bighorn sheep in West Texas.

At the Wild Sheep Foundation, Brewer oversees wild sheep conservation, management and research activities in the western United States, Canada and Mexico.

THE MIND OF AN INNOVATOR, AND THE RIFLE IT CREATED Within the AllTerra Arms factory (previously named Axial Precision) in Idaho, founder Andrew Foster works tirelessly. He’s soft-spoken. If there’s any bragging to be done, he lets his rifles do the talking. And with their patented technology, AllTerra Arms rifles have a lot to say.

We sat down with Andrew to learn what drives him, and to get a tour inside a bolt-action rifle that may have the most concentrically perfect design ever created.

Drew, start us off with thoughts on how you got started with Axial Precision, now AllTerra Arms.

“I grew up a big game hunter, and along the way I shot some nice bolt-action rifles. But they all sacrificed something. In order to have long-range accuracy, smooth cycling was a problem. In rifles with smooth actions, accuracy always dropped due to loose tolerances. I always wanted a rifle that would give me the best of both worlds. So I built it.”

That easy?

“No. It's been a long road. I used my experience in exact-tolerance automotive engineering and put it into a patented rifle design.”

And that led AllTerra Arms to the “best-of-bothworlds” rifle?

“Yes. We build rifles to .0005” tolerances using patented design technology to achieve Bolt-toBore Alignment and No-Fail Cycling. The result is a rifle that literally transforms from a fast-action

field gun to a precision benchrest rifle the moment a live cartridge is locked down. Something I think every member of the Dallas Safari Club would appreciate.”

Tell us more about Bolt-to-Bore Alignment.

“The patented Dual-Lock Barrel Seat is a big part of it. It’s a superior alignment system with two seating rings on either side of the barrel threading.

The rings “nest” into seating sleeves machined inside the receiver. When the barrel threads down, two solid contact points lock in the alignment.”

And No-Fail Cycling?

“It’s about having smooth, jam-free dependability, thanks to relaxed tolerances between the bolt and receiver where it cycles. Plus, our bolts have patented conical lugs and elliptical raceways — so the internal surfaces literally “selfclean” with each cycle.”

Finally, tell us about your rifle’s name change.

“Axial Precision definitely conveyed a rifle built along a single axis. But the name didn’t capture the attitude our guns have for guaranteed longrange accuracy in any terrain. BOOK YOUR AMAZON TRIP AT OUR VIRTUAL SHOW 2020 was a nightmare! Our first instinct was to just call it a season as the pandemic raged into our fishing schedule, driving uncertainty and constant rescheduling ahead of it. Amazonas suffered deeply, our fisheries closed and travel became impossible. It was hard to imagine we would find a way to put all of our fishing operation’s complex moving parts back together.

But we’re not the ones to cut and run. We found the strength to prevail for three important reasons: Our commitment to our clients; the needs of our employees; and the indigenous tribes who depend on our partnership.

Our team made it happen. A whole series of challenges had to resolve themselves simultaneously, and somehow they did. The airlines began to fly again; Amazonas dramatically reduced infections, fisheries reopened, tourist resources were refitted for safety and we implemented the Cleveland Clinic’s health protocols for COVID-19.

Although it was a short season, it was an excellent one, with a full complement of extraordinary trophy peacock bass and a broad array of the Amazon’s exotic giant species. We have the pictures to prove it!

Now, we’re ready to return in full force for 2021/2022. Humans are regaining control of their lives. We want to hug each other again. We want to turn our masks into drink coasters and we want to do the things that bring joy, excitement and satisfaction into our lives — and that includes the all-inclusive fishing, traveling and adventuring trips that Acute Angling does better than anyone else.

BUFFALO WOOL PROVIDES THE BEST PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS Theresa and Ron Miskin have been raising American plains bison for more than 30 years.

The Buffalo Wool Company started as an extra income source with a desire to add more value to the bison industry. They create bison wool apparel products, from hats, socks to bags and more, all with the fur of the majestic animals that once roamed coast to coast, from Alaska to Mexico City.

“We are big supporters of bison ranchers all across this country; we learned from using it ourselves how luxurious, warm, and durable Bison fiber truly is,” Miskin said.

In recent years, the Miskins purchased a part of the historic Goodnight Ranch.

Cecil, Ron’s dad, is responsible for bringing the bison back to the ranch after almost 100 years. They also work with almost 200 ranches across the country to source their products.

The Buffalo Wool Co. is a historic name

for a company originally founded in 1821 by the Hudson Bay Co. in Red River, Manitoba. That company only lasted about five years before bankruptcy. Since the name wasn’t being used, the Miskins adopted it in 2011.

OLD AND NEW AT CARROLL’S GUN SHOP

In October of 2019, John Herlitz, a former sales representative and his wife, Pam, purchased a storied gun shop in Wharton.

The couple made career changes after years of discussions between Herlitz and Taylor Carroll, the owner of Carroll’s Gun Shop, while Herlitz was a representative with Owens Outdoor Sales.

“Mr. Carroll would joke about selling it for a few years, and would say, “Did you bring the check,” Herlitz said.

Carroll’s Gun Shop began in 1960, owned by Taylor’s father. Taylor Carroll purchased the business in 1988 and, in 2004, bought a 100-year-old building on the highway where the business remains.

“The building was a bar at one time,” Herlitz said. “The bar is still in it.”

When Carroll was ready, the couple talked about it and and decided it was a worthy endeavor. The decision was a good one and, after just more than a year, was made at the right time.

“It’s been crazy,” Herlitz said. “The name of the store stayed the same, but the business has been through the roof. Plans we had to expand into other areas were put on hold to deal with what the customers want and need — firearms and ammunition.”

Old relationships in the industry helped.

“We were able to get product,” Herlitz said. “I’ve never seen anything like this with demand and supply being so far apart. The pie of supply is the same size, but there are more people trying to eat from it.”

In one week, Herlitz said a shipment of 5.56 ammo came in.

“We sold 150,000 rounds in five days,” he said.

Whether it’s rifles, shotguns, handguns or ammunition, Carroll’s Gun Shop in Wharton is worth a stop, and their inventory will surprise you.

And when you’re done shopping, maybe you can tell hunting stories by a 100-year-old bar.
