Montana Watch Company: Handcrafted in America U.S. watch manufacturer revives the fine art of handcrafted watchmaking ince 1998, the Montana Watch Company has been creating custom handcrafted timepieces in the heart of southwest Montana, earning international acclaim and an elite clientele. Yamaha Outdoors Supports Dallas Safari Club ‘Assembled in U.S.A. Grizzly Giveaway’ raising funds for HAVA and Feed the Children

amaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., the manufacturer of ATV and Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicles including the Grizzly 700 ATV, is proud to participate in Dallas Safari Club’s annual event and be a part of the outdoors community in general.

Yamaha, through its relationships with organizations such as the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Buckmasters, National Wild Turkey Federation, SCI, and National Hunting and Fishing Day, among others, is a continued supporter of conservation efforts for outdoor enthusiasts and is more involved in the outdoors than any other motorsports manufacturer. Not only does Yamaha support critical outdoors conservation programs, but it also runs its own program — the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative — which has granted nearly $2 million toward supporting safe, responsible riding and open, sustainable riding areas since 2008.

It is also a founding and sustaining partner of Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA) — a nonprofit designed to aid the healing and reintegration of disabled combat veterans back into normal American life through participation in

outdoor events. Just last month, Yamaha was at HAVA’s 4th Annual National Family Day at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio where 150 veterans and their family members gathered to enjoy shooting sports and demonstrations.

Also in support of HAVA, Yamaha has launched a fund-raiser called the “Assembled in U.S.A. Grizzly Giveaway.” The sweepstakes, which will ultimately split all money raised between HAVA and Feed the Children, an international organization that provides food and essentials to children in need, promotes a major production transfer for Yamaha. This summer, Yamaha announced that it started bringing more manufacturing to its U.S. factory in Georgia from overseas plants.

With this production transfer, all of Yamaha’s 4x4 ATVs are now being assembled in the U.S.A. Yamaha’s bestin-class Grizzly 700 and Grizzly 550 ATVs were the first models to move to Georgia for assembly this summer, and in celebration of the transition, Yamaha launched the U.S.A. Grizzly Giveaway.

Jess Alford IV, Zachary Wade co-winners of Colin Caruthers Young Hunter Award hen 19-yearold Jess Alford IV started high school, Wilson Stout, a family friend, made him an offer.

“Jess grew up in the Valley and my wife and I have known him since he was born,” Wilson said. “I told him about the pitfalls of this world and I told him if he worked hard and stayed out of trouble, I would take him to Africa.”

Jess kept his end of the bargain and was rewarded with a trip to the Dallas Safari Club convention several years ago to walk the aisles and talk with professional hunters.

After consulting with Wilson, they decided to go to Namibia with Thormählen & Cochran Safaris.

That set in motion a chain of events that eventually led to Jess receiving this year’s Dallas Safari Club Colin Caruthers Young Hunter Award, along with Zachary Wade of Anchorage, Alaska.

“It was the summer of 2010 and it was absolutely phenomenal,” Jess said. “I grew up hunting in South Texas, but had never done anything like this.”

Jess got his African career started with a warthog. From there, it was off to another camp, where he took a greater kudu and one of the most rare of African trophies — an African wildcat.

The final camp was in the desert scrub country typical of much of Namibia.

Jess finished up the safari taking another warthog, a gemsbok, a red hartebeest and a zebra.

Jess said he enjoyed learning about another culture, and came away impressed with the people of Namibia.

“It was great getting to see another part of the world,” he said. “They aren’t as industrialized as we are, but they have a similar outlook as we do. It made the world seem smaller. I realized how much we take for granted.”

Along with being a world hunter, with a trip to Argentina also on his résumé, Jess is an Eagle Scout who has accomplished many civic projects.

Jess shares the award with Zachary Wade. The vote was a dead heat based upon each of the young men’s accomplishments and hunting prowess.

According to Wade’s dad, Mark, 18-yearold Zachary has hunted deer in the San Angelo area where he grew up before moving to Anchorage.

Also an Eagle Scout, Zachary has taken red stag and tahr in New Zealand and Cape buffalo, eland and wildebeest on two African safaris. He has also taken a record Alaskan moose.

Along with hunting, the two young men exemplify the spirit of their award with their civic work.

“Jess had more civic points than anyone in the history of the club,” Wilson said.

“He’s just a wonderful kid, and I am really glad he won it, along with Zachary Wade.

We need more young men like them.”

‘We have won’ t had been a long 19 days.

Nineteen days of sitting in blinds at waterholes, stalking game on foot and waiting at pinch points near salt licks for a 30-yard or less shot on a big gemsbok.

I had been beaten every conceivable way a bowhunter could be beaten — small shifts in the wind, full moons, a glint of sunlight on a pair of binoculars, other animals getting in the way, go-away birds, ill-timed coughing fits.

You name it, it had cost me a shot at the gemsbok bull I so desperately wanted.

It was the final hunting day of a threeweek adventure to celebrate my mother-inlaw’s victory over breast cancer in the summer of 2009 with Holstein Hunting Safaris in Namibia.

While the rest of the family were off harvesting wonderful trophies — mountain zebra, gemsbok, warthog, steenbok and a huge 58.5-inch kudu taken by my wife, Katie, I was grinding it out with my bow.

I had determined early on in the hunt that I would take a gemsbok with my bow or go home empty-handed. Easy shots had been passed at impala, warthog and blue wildebeest.

On the final day, I was sitting in the blind with my young PH when a herd of gemsbok appeared at the edge of the thorn scrub 100 yards in front of the blind.

I’d watched gemsbok hang at 100 yards for several hours on a couple of occasions, waiting patiently for the right time to come to the water.

This herd and the large bull within it would be my last chance.

Finally, one-by-one, they began to come closer.

The cows were the first to reach the far side of the water, 35 yards from the blind.

The bull was bringing up the rear and for the first time we could tell he was big. In fact, he was the biggest bull we had seen the entire hunt.

The bull came to the water and drank directly facing us. As he finished drinking, he turned to his right, presenting a quick

broadside shot. I was ready when he turned, quickly drawing and settling the correct pin behind his shoulder.

He was only broadside for a second or two, but that was enough to draw and send the 100-grain broadhead on its way.

The PH shouldered his .375, but I called him off when I saw lung blood spurting from both sides of the bull as he disappeared into the thorns.

A quick tracking job and we found the bull within 200 yards of the blind.

As I sat admiring the bull and waiting for the truck to come to load him for the triumphant trip to camp, I wrote one sentence in my hunting journal. The line was stolen from James Mellon’s epic book “African Hunter” when he described a great hunt for a 60-inch kudu — “We have won.”

The celebration back at camp is best saved for another story.

I was mentally worn out, but the satisfaction of taking a 38-inch bull with heavy bases on the final day of the hunt still resonates within me.

It was an unforgettable hunt on many levels, but to truly hunt an animal on the ground, with archery gear, the correct way, was extremely rewarding.

elcome to the Dallas Safari Club 2012 Out of the Wild Convention and Expo. A record 800 exhibitors are confirmed, a waiting list of 400 more, and an expected crowd of 32,000 tells the tale: The Greatest Hunting Convention on the Planet is the place to be!

Attendees will find a 425,000-square-foot exhibit hall that emphasizes quality, variety and hospitality over sheer bulk, according to Ben Carter, DSC executive director.

“Our goal is to host the best show of its kind, not necessarily the biggest,” said Carter. “Managing the size metrics of the event.

All of this allows more attendees to find hunting adventures, guns, gear and accessories that are perfect for them. And this buying atmosphere, in turn, allows more exhibitors to do well and have a great show.”

The overarching goal, of course, is nurturing the event for longhaul success and support for DSC conservation, education and hunter advocacy initiatives.

In 2011, DSC spent a record $784,000 on mission-related programs, an increase of more than $100,000 from the previous year. Over the past five years, DSC has granted more than $2.8 million for habitat protection and management, wildlife restoration and research, youth learning programs, and promoting hunter interests and benefits to conservation worldwide.

There are very few times in a collector’s lifetime when an opportunity presents itself to acquire coveted items from an established and well known scholarly collection, “en masse.” The March auction will afford vintage custom knife collectors an incredible once-in-a-lifetime chance.

Julia’s will be offering the renowned lifetime collection of William Scagel Custom Knives belonging to Dr. Jim Lucie of Fruitport, Mich. Dr. Lucie is regarded as the reigning authority on Bill Scagel, his life, and the knives he pro-

duced. Dr. Lucie is a noted author and has most recently completed a monumental and comprehensive book on Scagel’s works titled, “Scagel Handmade.” He has been a passionate collector of Scagel-made knives and other unique Scagel personal items for many decades. Dr. Lucie had the great fortune of meeting, doctoring and befriending Bill Scagel, late in his life. Dr. Lucie’s special relationship, appreciation of Scagel’s works eventually resulted in his amassing what is considered the finest collection of Scagelmade products to exist today.

Scagel was an extremely conservative, crusty and independent individual who lived life on his own terms.

Born in 1875, he lived until 1963 and for the majority of his life he used his unique skills and abilities to manufacture and craft about anything he wished. His focus, however, was on the production of quality knives. Although his products were simple utilitarian objects, he incorporated his unique talents into the production of objects of art. His knives were literally a thing of beauty and he eventually began marketing them through the elite sporting goods store Von Lengerke & Antoine in Chicago. Up until 1929, his exquisite knives were featured in their catalogs and sportsmen from all over of North America sought to own these very special knives.

Scagel was the first person to be recognized as a bladesmith and artisan in the 20th Century. Knife makers like Bo Randall began to create artistic knives like those of Scagel’s and today the extraordinary fraternity of bladesmiths throughout North America can attribute the origination of this art form to Scagel himself; he is unquestionably the “Moses” of the American knife makers.

With the exception of a couple of items he retains for his daughters, Dr. Lucie’s entire collection will be offered in this auction. There are between 70 and 80 Scagel lots in this sale and they will be offered in consecutive order on one day.

These items represent some of the finest and most exquisite examples from the Scagel workshop including great rarities like camp axes, military fighting knives, and elaborate stag handled hunting knives to simple paring/utility blades.

Julia’s catalog, considered the finest in the industry, will feature exquisite, fullcolor photos of each lot and a detailed description. A unique feature about the Julia catalog is, unlike most auctions that offer their goods “as is, where is,” Julia’s descriptions carry a 45-day guarantee from the date of the auction against any major discrepancy in the catalog description, thus making absentee bid participation not only easy and convenient, but also safe. “Definitely, I think you could use it just about everywhere,” he said.

BuckBrush was first developed for waterfowlers set up in timber near ponds and creeks.

The company has also rolled out other patterns: KW-1 (KillerWeed), developed to hide ground blinds in harvested fields; and MarshGrass, patterned after narrow leaf cattails, tules and flooded corn.

Dark-hued BuckBrush, however, has influences of tree bark, which is effective for all sorts of hunting, Branch said.

It was primarily designed from a duck’s view — while it’s airborne.

According to Avery, “A combination of blurred and in-focus brush over a

slightly darker background produces the most effective depth and neutral tone ‘woods’ waterfowl pattern ever created.”

“It seemed to be the most versatile to fitting into mesquite and sagebrush areas,” Branch said. “I shot turkey 10 to 15 yards away without them ever being able to see me.

“Turkeys have better eyesight than deer. If you can fool a turkey just with that, you’ll definitely fool a deer.”

hen Mark Grosvenor founded Medallion Foods in Newport, Ark., he was committed to developing a snack food business that would be a major player in the national marketplace. To do that, he needed quality people to move to northeast Arkansas to help him succeed in his dream. His purchase of Cooper Creek Ranch and the improvements he made on the property provided a well-rounded retreat for his management group.

Having been involved in other land projects in the Northwest, he knew what it would take to make this ranch a firstclass hunting preserve. To maintain a quality herd of animals would take a lot of hard work and time to finish Grosvenor’s dream place in Arkansas. To this end, he hired a full-time staff to maintain the property year-round for the hunting potential.

While there is more than 2,200 acres of timber currently on the ranch, the decision was made to leave the trees as additional cover for animals and help improve the habitat. A yearly burn was made to help relieve the underbrush for better hunting and to help prevent fires.

Several areas were cleared for food plots, homesites and pasture for grazing.

Realizing that this was going to be a world-class ranch, a log cabin was built at what was then the front to the property. The logs for this cabin where imported from the Pacific Northwest, and the entire cabin was custom-designed by Grosvenor. This cabin sits in the middle of a pasture with a long driveway bordered by a split-rail fence. The furniture was also custom-designed just for this lodge.

Years later, the final piece to making this ranch complete was purchased: a large, 4,000-square-foot home. This purchase allowed the ranch to control the entire county road and close access while having a nice road running through the ranch. This home was redesigned to the strict standards of Grosvenor’s dream. The inside was made to become a luxury home, but also a place to have meetings and entertain customers.

To that end, the rooms were enlarged to accommodate large groups of people. No expense was spared in the creation of this house.

The addition of the second home allowed for more people to enjoy this wonderful ranch, but also allowed for the property to be enjoyed year-round. It was no longer just a hunting ranch. With its unique location in the country, several airports close by and its secluded setting, the property became a great getaway for relaxation.

Of course, hunting was the original reason for the ranch. There were several food plots made in strategic locations. Each food plot had at least one raised, enclosed deer stand built overlooking it. Several feeders were added to help maintain the population of quality game herds. With the abundance of water, the herd had no reason to leave the ranch. To help allow the scoring of the animals, the perimeter fencing was not a high-game fence per Grosvenor’s desires.

All of the work to make this a world-class recreation spot has already been completed by Grosvenor and his foresight of making a ranch out of this piece of the Ozarks.

This peaceful property is tucked away in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. But it is also just two and a half hours from either Memphis, Tenn., or Little Rock, Ark.

Genetic contribution of whitetailed deer is a well-documented subject. To influence free-ranging ranch genetics, deer from breeder facilities are being released to the wild. These animals of known descent can help operations influence genetics that select for a specific trait. Some antler characteristics are highly heritable while others are not. In 1994, J.D. Williams, et al., studied the heritability for antler characteristics and body weight of yearling white-tailed deer. The summary of the heritability averages is

cellular level. A buck and doe both contribute exactly 50 percent of the genetic material inside of the cell’s nucleus, however outside of the nucleus a doe is able to contribute more through mitochondrial DNA. Like most species, fawns inherit mitochondrial DNA solely from their mother, giving the doe slightly more genetic contribution than 50 percent. In addition to genetics, the doe is responsible for a buck’s development through care and nutrition.

White-tailed does play a huge role in producing trophy whitetail bucks.

Releasing genetically superior deer from a breeding facility serve as an alternative to TPWD’s Trap,

Transport, and Transplant (TTT).

Historically, many managers chose TTT to build their deer herds. In this program, white-tailed deer are trapped by safe and legal means (usually helicopter and net guns), then released to pre-approved sites that have current wildlife management plans in place, CWD surveillance and adequate habitat. TTT release sites are inspected and current population census approved by a TPWD biologist. There is a $750 application processing fee per release site.

The Deer Breeders Corporation (DBC) has a new program that will make selected white-tailed deer with enhanced genetics available to satisfy management requirements easier than the TPWD TTT program. The DBC provides ranch managers/owners with names of DBC deer breeders that have licensed breeding facilities. To release deer that have been purchased from a breeding facility, you must have a facility ID number, which is easily obtained from TPWD. A completed “Request for Registration of Site or Facility” application is returned to the TPWD Deer Breeder Program for approval. This application process does not have a processing fee and is very user-friendly.

UV Country opens new showroom in Alvin Nation’s top Kawasaki MULE and TERYX dealer expands

V Country has specialized in utility vehicles since the 1990s, and its new location in Alvin, a showpiece for its vehicles, provides a test-driving area and offers more of the high-quality service that has contributed to its standing as one of the top dealerships in the country.

“We’ve grown our business different from others,” said Shannon Tracy, who owns the business with her husband, Scott. “We specialize in utility vehicles — we saw a real need for this in the mid-90s — the vehicles weren’t just being used for farms and ranches, they were used for hunting and outdoor applications.”

UV Country offers two-wheel and fourwheel drive off-road vehicles in electric, gas, diesel and 6x6 and 8x8 in amphibious.

Their product line includes Kawasaki, Club Car XRT, HuntVe, Argo, Big Tex Trailers, Yeti Coolers and Lehman Feeders. For the last four years, the dealership has been the largest seller in the U.S. of the Kawasaki MULE and TERYX. But the Tracys were hindered by their Houston retail location of 5,500 square feet, until they purchased a former Dodge dealership facility in Alvin.

Now completely renovated, the building is a state-of-the-art power sports facility, complete

with a 16-bay service area specializing in utility vehicles, side x sides, ATVs, golf carts, trailers and eight acres where customers can test-drive the vehicles.

“For the first time, we have the retail location where we can showcase all that we have available,” Shannon said. “We help the customer find the vehicle that best fits their needs.”

Scott Tracy focuses on the service and customizing side.

“We’ll build the vehicle to the customer’s needs,” he said. “From the gun racks to the lighting to anything else, we can do it. We stand behind what we sell and service, and we take great pride in that.”

Scott said their shop equipment is similar to what you might see in a tractor shop like where he got his start working on John Deere heavy equipment.

“We have the right qualified technicians and the right equipment,” he said. “I’m more concerned with service after the sale.

“That’s what we’ve been doing for years, and we spend many hours a day in the back making sure the vehicles are right — and we enjoy it, it’s not like a job — I love what I do.”

A memorable year, with more to come

n July, I watched my daughter “leopard crawl” on her hands and knees to the edge of a ravine in northeast South Africa.

Lili, joined by PH Herman Coetzee of Thormählen & Cochran Safaris, edged closer to a mature waterbuck as a north breeze muffled the shudder noise of my Nikon D3.

Herman posted the shooting sticks; Lili set up, aimed and fired.

PH and client both looked back into my lens. Herman beamed elation; Lili looked worried, unsure of her shot.

The powerful animal, weighing 300 to 400 pounds, did charge off.

The hunting party followed. The bull appeared and Lili was instructed to shoot again. The bull bolted, Lili fired as it ran.

It collapsed after another 200-yard run. Herman was impressed with the two perfect shots that connected.

He congratulated Lili with a handshake and said, “When you meet a boy you want to marry, have him call Herman and I’ll tell him all about you.”

At that moment Herman nicknamed her “The Bush Princess.” It was her third animal on our safari last summer.

How could I not be any more proud of my daughter?

The year 2011 has been memorable, to say the least.

Ben Carter and I hunted axis last spring with NGK Adventures in the Texas Hill Country.

In September, I enjoyed one of the best white-winged dove shoots ever at the Nooner Ranch near Hondo.

A month later, Craig Nyhus and I were nicknamed the “Cull Brothers” while harvesting management bucks at Rafter W Ranches in Sonora.

On the first weekend in November, I guided my youngest daughter, Marina, to her first deer. A fine 10-point buck and I had a great Thanksgiving with my girls while hunting ducks on the Texas coast.

In December I was on my West Texas deer lease where I rattled up 23 bucks in a three-day period. I never squeezed the trigger, but it was one of the greatest deer hunts of my life.

Unfortunately, not all my time is spent in the field. Publishing Lone Star Outdoor News demands a lot of hours in the office.

And it’s usually a mad dash to be on time for Dallas Safari Club board meetings. Serving on the board has allowed me to give back to this great club.

It has been astounding to see how even with a bad worldwide economy all facets of the hunting industry still support each other.

Lone Star Outdoor News is a perfect example.

The newspaper, now in its eighth year, is privileged to produce the DSC convention day program.

What you’re holding is the largest convention program we’ve ever produced. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen.

Through this industry, we’re inspired to give back.

Soon, Lone Star Outdoor News will start a new phase in its long-range plan: the development of a new charitable foundation to benefit youth education, hunter opportunity, wildlife research and outdoor journalism.

We’ll be announcing more on that later. For now, we can all agree that 2012 is sure to hold its own great memories.
