The 2026 Dallas Safari Club Convention & Sporting Expo is ready to kick off the new year with some old traditions mixed in with some exciting new events to create the finest outdoor expo in the country. Coming off a successful Summer Expo in Grapevine in July, we are ready to open the doors to our show attendees on the finest hunting and fishing adventures, gear, firearms, taxidermy and so much more, back here at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. DSC’s staff, board and the army of volunteers known as the DSC 100 are ready to welcome industry professionals and attendees from all points around the globe. The genuine hospitality and DSC’s commitment to hosting an incredible Convention for our Exhibitor Partners and attendees is our highest priority. And we’ve got an exciting lineup of banquets, breakfasts, seminars and auctions to keep anyone busy over the next few days. This year, DSC will host a Conservation Kickoff Banquet and Auction to truly begin Convention weekend. A new Life Member Appreciation Breakfast will be held Friday morning, and Friday evening’s banquet will feature Ivan Carter, a legend in African big game hunting and conservation. The always popular Ladies’ Luncheon — Field to Fabulous — will feature Kate MacGregor, deputy secretary of the Department of the Interior. Stick around after lunch for an auction and dancing to one of our favorite bands — The Tams. On Saturday night, North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong will be the featured guest speaker, as he recounts tales from a lifetime of service to our great country. We want to thank each of you for making the journey to Atlanta to meet up with so many old friends, make some new friends and explore options for your next adventure — all while supporting DSC’s commitment to ensuring the future of science-based wildlife management and our hunting heritage. All this and so much more will ensure that the 2026 DSC Convention & Sporting Expo will continue to be the greatest gathering of conservation and hunting enthusiasts. Welcome back to Atlanta!

ZIPPER WOES By Craig Nyhus

Lone Star Outdoor News Few things rival the frustration when the weather turns chilly and you can’t zip up your cold-weather jacket. Colder temperatures and the opening of the deer rifle and waterfowl season and wade-fishing the coast in heavy gear have hunters and anglers digging in their closets or bins for their heavy coats and pants. When it’s time to use them, you’re often in for a surprise. It either won’t zip up or, when it does, the zipper separates below the slider (the little thing you hold that slides up and down). In the field, you see people struggling with their zipper before or during the hunt. Some just give up. Others keep trying — adding their share of colorful language. Is it you, is it because of cheap, foreign zippers or is it something else? It’s not you, but it might not be cheap zippers, either. In the last few years, I have replaced zippers on a high-dollar technical jacket and this fall on a lightweight, breathable rain jacket for cool, but not cold, conditions. What’s the deal? The slider is sometimes the key place to start when your zipper won’t get started or especially if it is getting started but then separating below the slider. It’s an easy replacement, can be done at your local cleaners, and costs about $5 to $10. It usually fixes the problem, but for me, the fix was temporary, and the zipper was later replaced. If the starter pin or the starter box (the place where you start) is broken, bent or damaged, it’s probably time for a new zipper. Same for broken teeth along the zipper, sometimes caused by a chewing puppy. Age-old attempted solutions include lubricating with graphite pencils, petroleum jelly, floor wax, soap or even olive oil, or by attempting to get the teeth of the zipper to grab by gently squeezing loose sliders with pliers to realign the teeth. Many manufacturers will repair the zipper, but it takes time and, a few years later, you might be sending it back. Technical outdoor clothing and gear repair company Rugged Thread said it repairs or replaces more than 200 zippers per year. Many curse the malfunctioning zippers as cheap. Maybe not, gear companies say. For hunters and anglers, zippers are usually made of plastic to avoid corrosion and rust. The trend toward lightweight jackets and pants means weight is an issue, which can leave out the heavy-duty steel or brass zipper. If you prefer not to ship off your gear and wait, a place to head might be your local shoe repair store. The stores aren’t easy to find, but they aren’t totally a thing of the past, and the smell of leather and cleaning products will bring back memories. If you want to upgrade and go heavy-duty, risking some corrosion in the future, it might be a quicker solution at a cost of about $40. “We’re a dying breed,” said Dan of Dan’s Shoe & Canvas Repair, of Perham, Minnesota. “Shoes and clothes are more of a throw-away item now, and when a sole wears out, they just get a new pair. Plus, most soles now aren’t made of leather.” Dan said replacing zippers and repairing canvas are a big part of why he’s still in business. “Some of the zippers are cheap, and others just can’t handle the constant use,” he said. “I put in heavy-duty zippers all the time.” If your zipper bails on you this winter, a trip to the shoe guy might be the answer. And he probably could use the business. David J. Sams

Fine shotguns have always been the synthesis of art and function. Over the last 100 years some of the most iconic craftsmen have spent hundreds of hours hand sculpting steel, perfecting mechanical excellence and turning rare pieces of walnut into perfectly checkered stocks. Master engravers dedicate weeks of labor to turn polished metal surfaces of a shotgun into masterworks of art. The end result is the highest form of artistry and craftsmanship in firearm manufacturing. As wonderful and fascinating as these firearms are, they are little more than an unapproachable luxury item that is out of reach for the average hunter. What if a company could use modern technology to make a shotgun that had the same qualities? That is the concept behind the new Revenant by Caesar Guerini. By the use of the most modern production technology and clever engineering, Caesar Guerini has created a shotgun that is one-fifth the price of shotguns featuring the same features

made one at a time by hand. The Revenant starts with a round body action famous for its graceful curves and adds radiused side plates to further enhance the lines of the action. The foreend is graced with a winged fore-end iron and inletted escutcheon surrounding the push-button release, both the hallmarks of the highest quality shotguns. A long trigger guard blends into a swept back pistol grip to make the profile of the Revenant what can best be described as “racy.” The barrels feature a tapered solid top rib and mid rib. To further the goal of making an extraordinary firearm, Caesar Guerini turned to a world leader in fine engraving, Bottega C. Giovanelli and their Director and Master Engraver Dario Cortini. His vision was to create a new and original motif for the Revenant utilizing organic forms instead of a common variation on scroll. To this end he drew a design of maple leaves and branches that are both elegant and evoke a hunting theme.

For 40 years, we have been operating in some of the finest areas for big game—both forest and mountain species—as well as for Bird Shooting. We host international hunters seeking authentic experiences, trophy quality, and the refined comfort that France is known for. From our 200-year-old family manor, the Bernon family offers exclusive big game stalking for red deer, roe deer, fallow deer, and wild boar—an authentic French hunting experience just an hour from Paris. Our territories blend farmland edges, open meadows, and traditional French woodlands. Roe deer are hunted during the summer rut, and red stag mainly in September and October, offering a genuine immersion in France’s traditional hunting culture. We also offer exclusive French wingshooting across our estate and the neighboring Gazeran Castle. The varied topography and rich bird diversity make these shoots among the most distinctive and traditional in France—and among the most exceptional in Europe. In a setting that reflects the very best of European bird shooting, hunters can enjoy traditional rough shooting as well as superb driven days for common and Reeves’ pheasants, ducks, and both red-legged and grey partridges. Our privileged access extends from our free-range estate to some of France’s most remarkable territories. We are committed to offering some of the most rewarding mountain hunts in Europe, thanks to exclusive access to premium areas across the southern French ranges and the remarkable diversity of species they hold. Hunts for chartreuse, Vercors, Alpine, and Pyrenean chamois, together with French Mainland Corsican mouflon, take place in spectacular natural settings,

delivering excellent trophies and a genuine immersion in the spirit of wild mountain hunting. Club Faune – Africa Club Faune is also recognized as one of the most trusted outfitters in Western and Central Africa since 1985. We operate in some of the finest areas in Cameroon, Chad, and Morocco. In northern Cameroon, our concession is renowned for its high density of Lord Derby Eland and the largest population of korrigum. It is also home to a wide variety of species such as Western roan, Western savannah buffalo, and Sing-sing waterbuck. In the rainforests of southeastern Cameroon, our area is located near Lobeke National Park, providing access to bongo, sitatunga, forest buffalo, and several other species. Over the years, we have maintained a 100% success rate on bongo with outstanding trophy quality. In Chad, we operate in the only big game hunting area home to several unique species — Western greater kudu, red-fronted gazelle, Lelwel hartebeest, and Central African buffalo — all of which can only be hunted in Chad. In Morocco, we offer highly successful Barbary sheep hunts from an excellent area located in the northeast of the country. Across France and Africa, our philosophy remains the same: well-managed areas, professional guidance, and a commitment to authentic, memorable hunting experiences.

Glen Dene Hunting A True Connection to Place

COME HAVE A YARN We’re excited to share that Glen Dene Hunting & Fishing New Zealand will be exhibiting at the Dallas Safari Club Convention, held February 6–8, 2026 in Atlanta.

Find us at Booth #1442

At Glen Dene Hunting & Fishing, every trip is about more than the hunt, it’s about a true connection to the surroundings. In between Lake Hāwea and Lake Wānaka, the landscape isn’t just scenery; it’s the heart of the experience. Immense high-country basins, rugged ridgelines, and clear South Island lakes pull you into a slower, older rhythm where the outside world doesn’t exist. That connection deepens through the way you hunt. Glen Dene is proud of real, fair-chase hunting across vast private country, guided by locals who know these mountains intimately. Whether you’re tracking red stag, fallow buck, tahr, chamois or goats, the pursuit is earned step by step by reading the wind, moving with the terrain, and matching skills against wild country. And just as memorable is the connection to people. As a family-run lodge, Glen Dene wraps each day in genuine Kiwi hospitality — tailored hunts, warm fireside stories, and meals built around local produce and hard-won venison. Add world-class trout and salmon fishing to the mix, plus options for families and non-hunters, and you leave with something bigger than a trophy: a lived bond with this corner of New Zealand.

Come say hello, meet the team, and explore the world-class hunting and fishing adventures we offer in the South Island of New Zealand. See you there!

Discover the Texas Hill Country Game Fair The Lone Star State’s One-of-a-Kind Outdoor Event

Inspired by the long-standing Game Fair heritage that began in England in 1958, the Texas Hill Country Game Fair brings this rare sporting tradition to the Lone Star State. Presented by the Wildlife & Natural Resources Committee of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and Joshua Creek Ranch, this two-day celebration showcases the best of outdoor sport, conservation, and Texas hospitality. Hosted June 12–13, 2026, at the world-renowned Joshua Creek Ranch in Boerne, Texas, the event will take place at one of the country’s premier sporting resorts. For more than three decades, Joshua Creek Ranch has welcomed sportsmen and women from around the globe with its wingshooting, luxury amenities, and awardwinning outdoor experiences. Its blend of Hill Country scenery and top tier sporting grounds makes it the perfect home for this new annual tradition. The Texas Hill Country Game Fair is designed for outdoor sporting enthusiasts, conservation advocates, industry exhibitors, and supporters of youth education. Attendees can enjoy archery, wingshooting competition, fly fishing instruction, hunting dog demonstrations, and hands-on activities led by expert partners. Exhibitors and sponsors will have the chance to connect with engaged, high-value outdoor consumers while showcasing premium sporting equipment, apparel, handcrafted goods, and conservationminded products. The weekend kicks off on Friday, June 12, with the Game Changer event, featuring live music, chef prepared hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, and a live auction of exclusive hunting adventures, firearms, and specialty items. Main events on Saturday will highlight industry exhibitors, a competitive shooting tournament featuring multiple skill divisions, demonstrations, music, a barbecue competition, and a silent auction supporting youth and conservation programs. Food and refreshments will be available throughout the day. There are four ways to participate: 1. Sponsor | 2. Exhibit | 3. Attend | 4. Compete in the Shooting Tournament. Even simple contributions — such as donating a product or service to the auctions or raffles — directly support fundraising efforts and connect participating brands with hundreds of sporting enthusiasts and upscale clientele. The Texas Hill Country Game Fair advances the mission of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, one of the nation’s most respected organizations supporting Texas youth and agriculture. With more than $279 million awarded in scholarships, grants, and educational programs, the Rodeo continues to create life-changing opportunities for young Texans. Proceeds from the event will further these initiatives while supporting conservation efforts that protect Texas wildlife and natural resources for future generations. I still vividly remember the talk I had with my dad sitting beside him in our old Ford pickup truck as we headed for the deer lease one afternoon after being picked up from elementary school. We had two groups of friends in town for a quick deer hunt — one group, an interesting and colorful bunch from the backwoods of South Carolina and the other, a group of hardcharging, young professional hunters from South Africa. “Son, there is a difference between hunting camp talk and home talk in front of your mother and sister. Understand? You’ll hear some things this weekend that don’t need repeating in front of certain company.” I nodded in understanding. Needless to say, I heard some colorful phrases and language over the next few nights that set a firm foundation in my young mind on the amazing and nuanced ways to communicate hunting stories and life lessons. Looking back, I now view it as some sort of rite of passage for many young boys as they transition to young men. There is something unique and special about spending time in a hunting camp as a boy, whether it be in the deer woods of Georgia or Texas or on a safari somewhere around the world. So, when I took my 10-year-old son, Boone, to Namibia this past June, along with my father, I figured he would get a full-on life lesson from being in camp around so many accomplished hunters and skilled camp-talk linguists.

We were hunting with Jamy Traut Safaris on his beautiful Panorama home property several hours south of Windhoek. Our extremely competent and patient PH, Louw Lotter, did an amazing job passing knowledge onto Boone, who bombarded him constantly with questions — mostly, is it big enough to shoot? Boone quickly picked up on some choice phrases related to hunting … If it flies, it dies. If it’s brown, it’s down. Principles and sayings from a bygone era since we practice strict game management and target only older animals. Still, the quirky rhymes and funny phrases were repeated often and with gusto by Boone when overlooking herds of plains game. In the end, his favorite saying, for obvious reasons when talking about 10-year-old boys, was, “If lead ain’t flying, shit ain’t dying.” Being in a hunting camp, the more he repeated it, the more we laughed. And the more I told him, DO NOT let your mother hear you say that when we get home. Which is exactly the first thing she heard at the airport as we made it through customs back home in Dallas. “Dad, can I say it once?” Followed by, “Mom, listen to what I learned!” Thankfully, my wife grew up around enough hunting camps to understand the significance of what her son was telling her. Which in the end was, Mom, I grew up a little on this trip. And we will forever repeat this saying and laugh at the memories around future campfires and future hunting trips. And that’s really the point of it all.

JAMY TRAUT HUNTING SAFARIS, NAMIBIA’S PREMIER SAFARI COMPANY Most hunters spend a lifetime waiting to see their first African sunrise. A fortunate few have experienced it countless times, yet never gain their fill. No matter how grand your expectations or which species tops the list, Jamy Traut Hunting Safaris is ready to host the safari of your dreams. There is no finer safari destination than Namibia. The size of Texas and Oklahoma combined and with a similar population density as Montana, Namibia is a land of stunning landscapes, unspoiled hunting concessions and a staggering selection of free-ranging plains game and big game species. Game numbers as well as trophy quality are outstanding and a proper infrastructure ensures that hunting Namibia is convenient and safe. A professional hunter with nearly 35 years of experience, Jamy Traut was born in Namibia and raised on a remote game-rich property near the Caprivi Strip. He grew up with a rifle over his shoulder and could never imagine becoming anything other than a professional hunter. Today, his namesake company remains a family-run operation with exclusive hunting rights on some of the most desirable private properties, national parks and conservancies in all of Africa. Bordering the west side of Etosha National Park, Kaokoland is Africa’s largest contiguous hunting concession. Essentially a wilderness area with but few residents, Kaokoland is a place where lions, elephant, eland and other major plains game species dominate the landscape. Leopard hunting in Kaokoland is outstanding as 26 |

the sheer size of the concession permits multiple baiting sites to be properly maintained prior to and during the hunt. Jamy’s sprawling concession in the Kalahari Desert is the place for huge black maned lions (currently importable to America), world-class gemsbok and outstanding trophy eland. Two concessions in the famed Caprivi Strip offer the opportunity for elephant, Cape buffalo, hippo, croc, lechwe and several other plains game species, as well as sport fishing. Quite often, safaris begin or conclude with a few days at Panorama, Jamy’s private plains game haven that encompasses 55,000 acres with exclusive rights to another 250,000 adjoining acres. Jamy’s partner, Louw Lotter, and their families live on Panorama and have created a spectacular permanent lodge with chalets, luxury safari tents, swimming pool and a selection of activities and tours for nonhunters as well. A Panorama-based safari is a favorite of family groups and the possibilities for side trips throughout Namibia can easily be arranged. All hunting areas feature permanent chalets or luxury tents with en suite baths, superb dining and an unexpected level of comfort. Each camp is supported by a full-time staff and professional hunters manage each location as well as leading the hunts. Jamy Traut Hunting Safaris is uniquely positioned to make your African safari dreams come true. Please drop by booth 2458 at any time during the show and see for yourself. WOOX – Where Italian Tradition Meets American Performance The WOOX story began in 1937, in the hills of Bergamo, Italy, where the Minelli family shaped raw wood with discipline and pride. Francesco Minelli and his three sons, Raffaele, Felice and Paolo, registered the Minelli company name as local lumberjacks for the local people of Alps Valley. Minelli’s reputation for exceptional quality products continued to grow, so did the international demand for such high quality, handcrafted goods. As a result, in 2020, the Minelli Group decided to launch a new consumer brand called WOOX. WOOX is a premium outdoor-gear brand that blends 88 years of Italian artisan tradition with modern American manufacturing excellence. Each piece is crafted the same way their grandfathers built their reputation: with time, care, and pride. WOOX products are designed for hunters, precision shooters, and sport shooters who value quality, style, and durability, not simply mass-produced gear. Their product portfolio includes world-class rifle stocks and chassis systems, axes, knives and accessories which are built with the kind of craftsmanship that once characterized custom woodwork and hand-finished metalwork. WOOX’s visually stunning gun stocks, chassis and firearm furniture are designed to elevate your shooting experience to the

next level. Whether its long-range, hunting, competition, defense or sport shooting, WOOX offers something for everyone. Their product lines include precision rifle, AR15, lever-action and shotgun furniture. WOOX has the perfect fit for your needs with their diverse collection of artisanal aftermarket stocks. WOOX combines Italian craftsmanship with American innovation to create premium knives and axes built for performance, durability, and style. Known for their highquality materials, ergonomic designs, and exceptional attention to detail, WOOX blades are the perfect match for outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, and collectors who appreciate both function and artistry. Whether you need a razor-sharp pocket knife for everyday carry or a powerful axe for bushcraft and survival, WOOX products deliver the perfect balance of tradition and modern engineering. At WOOX, they know how important it is to get the very most from your time outdoors. To ensure this, they proudly offer “100 Years of Support Service” including 100 years of free blade sharpening, 100 years of free chassis maintenance, 100 years of free technical consultation and assistance. WOOX guarantees that every product is free of manufacturer defects.

OCTOBER DOVE DAYS ON SECO CREEK Two perfect hunts By David J. Sams Lone Star Outdoor News

Sitting under a mesquite limb beside a half-full caliche stock tank, a cool October breeze swirling through sunflower, sesame, and doveweed fields, it was hard to believe this was South Texas. No sweat, no swarms of mosquitoes, just the whir of spinning-wing decoys and the buzz of damselflies. We had waited an hour without raising a gun, watching more flies than feathers. But that’s how it goes — until it doesn’t. The first dove came in quiet and low, skimming the tank like teal. They were mourning dove, stretching their wings, looking for trees to loft in or a safe landing near the water. But they’d picked the wrong trees. Manager Ricky Cenorio had set a dozen Mojo decoys just right, and it didn’t take long before the birds were committing hard — cupped wings, fast dives, twisting like ring-necked ducks in a north wind. The birds locked onto the decoys and dropped right in front of me. At one point, I had seven birds on the ground without moving a step. I didn’t take the long shots. No need. Most birds circled and came back, determined to land. It was textbook tank hunting. By 6:15, the action turned fast and steady. I dropped 14 birds with my little .410, and the 15th came gliding across the water. The shot hit square, but the bird kept flying, just barely. The trail was surprising — a big patch of blood, then another, and a third, like tracking a bowshot whitetail. I found him 30 yards into the brush, stone dead. A hunt to remember.

The next morning found us in the triangle of a turfgrass pivot just after 7:15. Shorts and a hoodie were enough for the cool air. The birds didn’t start flying until just before 8, but when they did, they came to the Mojos in small flurries — twos, threes, sometimes five. Shooting was tougher. The birds worked high and loose, dancing around the decoys like they couldn’t decide. Spacing the spinning wings closer together tightened the funnel and brought more decisive action. Ricky — always dialed in — chased a wounded bird nearly 350 yards across open ground. It might’ve been the longest retrieve he’s made all season. That’s the kind of attention you get when you hunt with Ricky — he watches the details, stays ready, and makes sure your hunt is dialed in. The lodge on the Flores family property is well-equipped, sleeping around 40 with a separate executive lodge that holds 20. There's a large dining hall, a commercial kitchen, and a smoker and grill out back that would make any pitmaster jealous. The view? A big, irrigated sunflower field, stretching out like an open invitation. Expect steaks, and big ones — thick, juicy, and cooked just right. Beyond dove, there’s quail, deer, and likely turkey hunting as well. It’s a working ranch with plenty of land and tradition. Planning Your Own Trip The winter dove season is amazing, and the Flores ranch is well worth the trip. You can day hunt, or better yet, bring your family, stay the night, and enjoy the full hospitality. Russell Aguilar handed me a handmade dove tote that I’ll be using for seasons to come. It was a great reminder of a wonderful hunt. To book a hunt call (210) 394-0642.

Western Sportsman – Navigating Legacy, Logistics, and the Law in Trophy-Room Transitions A trophy room is a lifetime displayed in wood, horn, hide, and bronze. It holds the stories we’ve carried for years— the hunts, the travels, the friendships written into every mount. At Western Sportsman, we honor that legacy. But eventually every collection reaches a moment when it must be passed on, and that transition is far more complex than most families ever imagine. If we were coin collectors, the exchange would be simple — I’d want your coins, and you’d want mine. Hunters are different. We don’t want each other’s trophies because they represent experiences, not commodities. That alone makes recovery difficult. But the legal side makes it even more challenging. We work closely with U.S. Fish & Wildlife and follow every state and federal regulation involved in moving taxidermy. The laws are detailed and often counterintuitive. A long-deceased animal seems like it should cross state lines freely, but lions, leopards, certain bears, and many exotics fall under strict rules. Compliance isn’t optional; it’s essential. This is why we exist — not to create a profit event, but to solve a problem families rarely know they have. We manage the emotional weight, the regulatory maze, and the logistical reality of rehoming taxidermy, bronzes, artwork, and complete trophy-room interiors. Our job is to provide clarity, legality, and dignity throughout the process. When the time comes to steward a lifetime collection, Western Sportsman stands in the space between sentiment and statute, guiding each piece to its proper, lawful, respectful next chapter.

CROC: THE LIVING LEGEND

Your collection is incomplete.

ALTAMONTCO.COM

By Bre Lewis

Croc Adams is a character. Anyone who has hunted with him, anywhere in the world, knows he’s the real deal. Born and bred in New Zealand, this Kiwi has chased adventure across continents with a rifle, rod, and a grin that usually means trouble. He grew up hunting on his family’s sheep farm and on the neighboring stations around Blenheim, where he worked as a young man and learned the type of hard-earned, real-life skills you can’t learn from a book. In the early ’70s, restlessness got the better of him. He hitched his way down the coast of Australia working on commercial fishing boats and touring the local pubs. When Croc talks about it now, you can picture him back there, wearing the same cheeky smile, David J. Sams open to whatever life threw at him. It was the beginning of a lifelong habit; if there was a horizon, he wanted to see what was on the other side of it. When he returned to New Zealand, he continued his wild, wide-open lifestyle, signing on as a professional hunter for the New Zealand Forest Service. The country was overflowing with red deer, goats, pigs, and even chamois, and Croc was part of the culling teams sent into the most remote backcountry to manage the herds. “It was every boy’s dream,” he’ll say, leaning back with a grin. “They’d give us a thousand rounds of .222 ammo, a bit of salt and canned food, and fly us into the hills. We’d hunt and camp for weeks until the ammo ran out, then come back to town, restock, and head straight back in.” Some of my favorite stories, told while we warm ourselves with a gin after a long day in the mountains, where Croc now runs a world-class alpine hunting operation, are the ones from those brief trips back to town. He and the other cullers would come stumbling in after weeks in the bush, still smelling of hundreds of dead goats, often with a truckload of possum skins. And somehow, even then, they managed to find dates. The way Croc tells it, their romantic success was equal parts confidence, desperation, and complete olfactory denial. Eventually, he met the love of his life, a nurse tough enough to tolerate the lingering scent of possums and goats during his culling days. He tried to settle into farming for a time, but between the lifestyle and the market, it never quite fit. Adventure had its hooks in him too deeply. So he began guiding hunts for a friend who outfitted professionally, and before long, Croc launched his own operation. Most of his early clients were Australians, with a few Europeans sprinkled in, and Croc grew his business the same way he’d grown his skills: by saying yes to every opportunity. He hunted overseas with clients, built relationships, and eventually guided in other countries as well. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that he shifted toward the American hunting scene. DSC, SCI, and the Wild Sheep Show opened a whole new world of hunters eager to chase tahr and chamois in the Southern Alps with someone who truly knew the mountains. This year you’ll find him at Wild Sheep Show and Western Hunting and Conservation, and while he looks perfectly tame and respectable standing in a booth, don’t be fooled. The real stories come out fireside, after a long day on the mountain, a glass of red wine in hand, and a tahr cape cooling nearby. Even after years of hunting and working with him, I’m still hearing new stories and learning something new about his life. It’s no exaggeration to say that watching Croc live with that mix of grit, humor, and unshakeable curiosity has shaped the life I lead today. He’s the one who showed me that adventure isn’t something you wait for, it’s something you go find. Croc is a character, yes, but more than that, he’s a legend still very much in the making.

Grow big bass with Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management Many landowners dream of catching a double-digit largemouth bass from their pond or lake. But 10-pounders don’t grow by accident. It takes the correct amount of habitat, forage, age and genetics to produce big fish. Even if you have the first three, if you don’t have the right genetics, your bass will never reach trophy size. “There are a lot of interesting studies being done on the importance of Florida bass,” said John Jones, president of Lochow Ranch Pond & Lake Management. “One-hundred percent Florida genetics is so important. It needs to be pure.” Lochow Ranch’s certified team of biologists and water maintenance experts provides the full range of lake and pond management techniques, including water quality and clarity testing and improvement, vegetation control and removal of pond weeds, liming and fertilizing, algae control, erosion and sediment control, identification and control of predators and much more. If a fishery is your goal, Lochow Ranch’s experts bring state-of-the-art techniques and expertise to maximizing your environment for game fish to thrive. The team is known across the South for its electrofishing surveys that yield the most accurate inventory of a lake’s fish population. The company also provides fish stocking, including a full range of game and forage fish, as well as supplemental fish feeders that help spur growth. “We’re growing some really big fish,” Jones said. Another issue some owners might not think about is the ever-expanding otter population. It is a massive

problem for landowners trying to grow big fish. “Ninety-five percent of the water we work with has had otter impact,” Jones said. “They kill between 7 and 28 pounds of fish per otter per day. Otters show preference to bass and crappie. We are working on trapping methods and working with the Otter Research Institute for less-lethal methods. With more than 1 million private water bodies in Texas alone, many anglers and pond managers are turning to Lochow for expertise. Lochow Ranch provides turnkey pond and lake management and maintenance services to landowners across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. The company also works in partnership with its affiliated company, Shoreline Consulting, to design and build new lakes and expand or renovate existing ones. We have a pond construction company with low interest rates,” Jones said. These professional techniques take the guesswork out of maintaining your body of water and ensure you can make faster progress toward your goals. “We can establish fundamental management practices,” Jones said. “Having that solid foundation can help your lake thrive despite seasonal disturbances and broader environmental conditions.” Lochow Ranch’s biologists and fleet of trucks are based in Bryan, Texas. They manage more than 6,000 lakes across the region — and they are offering their services into the southeastern states. “Our aim is to help you reach your goals so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your beautiful body of water,” Jones said.

THE HUNT FOR VIN

For Lone Star Outdoor News December 2020, just before my guiding career began, I was reviewing trail camera photos when I noticed a new buck. He was obviously young, with a small frame and a body that resembled a prepubescent teen. I aged him at two-and-a-half. His beams were heavy and much darker in color than normal. He was a typical 10, and both of his brow tines were split at the base. He showed lots of promise, so I saved the photo and crossed my fingers he wouldn’t leave the ranch. Then frankly, I forgot about him. Two years later, on a break between guiding clients out west, my dad and I ran down to the lease and hopped in a rifle stand. An hour before dark a buck walked out, his exceptionally dark antlers and double split brow tines seemed to jolt something deep inside my memory. I scrolled through my phone as fast as my millennial fingers could swipe until I found the trail camera photos. Undoubtedly the same buck, two years older, twice as big and on track to turn into something really special, but woefully close to the north property boundary. The teachings of Dave Richards and Al Brothers “Observing and Evaluating Whitetails,” my anthem and all-time favorite piece of literature, echoed in my conscience as I elected to give him the pass in hopes he would make it to ideal maturity, at least five and a half. The buck disappeared for the rest of the season, and I chalked it up to an ‘L’ in the free-range game, until checking cards that following spring when I noticed a buck in the background of one photo with heavy beams and split brow tines. He had made it through. He made another jump as a five-year-old and I officially declared him my target buck. The buck would certainly go Pope and Young and given his frequency and my level of self-entitled pride, I also declared I wouldn’t take him with anything other than my bow. I sat over two dozen times for the buck and saw him twice that year, both times out of range. Somewhere within that 58 |

timeframe is when my niece named him “Vin.” A name that stemmed from an altered version of the Latin phrase “Veni, Vidi, Vici” that she repeated 175 times one Thanksgiving. She liked that it could be short for venison too. He disappeared in December just like he did the year prior, and I waited again with bated breath until early spring of 2024 when he showed back up. Now a six-year-old, Vin had made his biggest jump yet and the chess match continued. Guiding kept me away more than I wanted but when I was able to go, he was nowhere to be found. It was infuriating. I made my living guiding big game hunters but couldn’t outsmart a whitetail on my home turf. I sat probably 10 times that year but only saw him once. The 2024-2025 season ended and still, no Vin. Circumstances changed for the 20252026 season, for both Vin and myself. My time would be even more limited with the coming of my wife and I’s first child in January, and Vin decided to grow an incredibly unique non-typical left side. The plan was to simplify and have my dad drop me off an hour before dark on opening morning, rifle in hand. As I watched him fall, I was surprised that my initial feelings were that of relief, followed by a tinge of regret. I was relieved knowing the end was instantaneous and best-case scenario for this animal I had so much respect for, but I regretted it being the end of a story. I was elated but calm; excited yet quiet. He was certainly my biggest buck to date but in the moment, I realized I cared more about doing right by the deer and getting to share it with my dad, than some numbers on a tape or what means of take I chose. It is so easy these days to get caught up in producing, to forget your why. Especially in hunting. To check off a box on a list with certain parameters and expectations.

DALLAS SAFARI CLUB CONVENTION 2026

Reis Ladd

The race for the biggest buck with the most technical equipment, until the next biggest and the next most technical comes along. I am no exception, particularly when guiding, often falling into the self-sabotaging trap of treating the next hunt like any other commodity. I realized that as fortunate as I am in all the hunting I get to do, what I have missed most is not so much the how or what, but rather the why and who with. I radioed to my dad and said “Papa, he’s on the ground.” The same thing I radioed my dad’s dad after shooting my first deer. I could hear the tears in his voice when he replied that he was on his way. We got to share that moment together, in the middle of the South Texas brush. Just like we did when I was growing up.

F. BEESLEY QUALITY By Alan Clemons

For Lone Star Outdoor News His hands make precise movements, placing the edges of his grandfather’s tools, known as a point and burin, on the side plate. TapTapTapTap The point requires deft taps from a small hammer. The burin is used with his hand, carefully, precisely. Tiny flecks of metal dance and glimmer. He repositions the point. TapTapTapTap His small loupe shows the lines, fine and exact, of a scene with palm trees. Luca Muffolini is a third-generation engraver from Brescia, Italy. His artistry is among the highlights of the Frederick Beesley Eleganza and Fenice custom over/under shotguns. Muffolini learned from his father, Stefano, and continues to hone his craft with Beesley’s bespoke offerings. Muffolini explained some of his process. Similar to a sculptor who sees the result in a block of marble, Muffolini envisions the design on a side plate or grip cap. He uses sketched designs or photos, should a client provide one, and while working can see it develop with each tap. It takes about 480 hours, or 20 days, from start to finish for the engraving process for a Beesley shotgun. Muffolini isn’t about speed, though. Nothing is with the Beesley process. Founded in 1879 in London, it was revitalized in 2015 under the direction of Director Tom Ward, Bradley Davis, the head of production and sales, and Ian Harrison, vice president of North American sales, along with their team. “I don’t think about time when I’m doing this or the qualities can suffer,” Muffolini said. “Whatever time it takes, that’s what it is. This is my work, of course, and it’s very important but also my passion so I want to do the best that I can.” Renewing a Legacy Frederick Beesley founded his company in 1879 in London after working several years for Purdey, a name discriminating hunters no doubt will recognize. Following a split in 1878 after nine years with Purdey, Beesley established his company and put his creative mind to use. He filed and received

more than two dozen patents, including “Patent 31” for a spring-cocked hammerless gun. That design changed firearms and his life’s course after he sold the patent to Purdey. Over the next decade he sold more patents to other companies and further established the F. Beesley line. He ultimately created about 1,800 shotguns. Beesley died in 1928. The company changed ownership several times over the next eight decades. Today, Beesley’s Eleganza, Fenice and Tecnica shotguns are created in Brescia, Italy. The area in the Alps has been home to gunmakers for more than 400 years. Local craftsmen with generations of experience and mentorship use the area’s natural resources to produce some 40 percent of the world’s guns. Ward has traveled extensively in Europe and elsewhere to spread the word about Beesley and help clients with fitting, questions or issues. It’s part of the bespoke service accorded to those who purchase a Beesley shotgun. “It’s not just the gun and service, but it’s like you’re in the Beesley Club, if you like, and us being able to look after the client more acutely,” Ward said. “It originates with providing great service to the client. That’s the foundation ... we’re not just selling a gun, and good luck and thank you very much. We’re building for clients. Every gun is bespoke ... we’re trying to capture that service. That’s really what’s been growing it. People just want to know it’s done, fixed and taken care of. Or if they have a question, they can ring us and get an answer directly from us. It’s a lot better for us to be able to manage that. Everybody has relationships ... but being one phone call away from being able to sort this, that’s the level we’re standing by.” Interest in the U.S. With the economic highs and lows of the last few years, sales of such shotguns aren’t at a peak. They’re not at the bottom of a dip, either. Discriminating clients will look, consider and buy or, perhaps, wait a bit. Ward, along with Harrison in the U.S., have been busy thanks to specific shows such as DSC and private visits to top clubs and lodges. Harrison has been to Rio Piedra Plantation in Georgia, Five-Star in Alabama, the Nashville Gun Club and others in

Thomasville, Georgia, and Jackson, Mississippi. “We’ve been very happy at how the guns have been received here so far,” Harrison said. “Our operation is lean. I have nine shotguns to take to events and shows. So far, though, it’s been good and the reception has been good. Our plan for now is to create these small, personal events and get the guns in people’s hands so they can see for themselves the quality and craftsmanship.” Harrison will show the Beesley line at the DSC Show in Atlanta and SCI Convention in Nashville, both in February. Production? A Year, Give or Take Harrison said “slow, and steady” is the mantra for now as the company grows in the U.S. An order for a shotgun won’t take years, however. He said, “we promise a year, but it’s usually about nine months for delivery.” Order now and it might be in your hands before quail or waterfowl season opens next autumn. Exotic wood or engraving would add time, of course. “In the U.K., we sold a lot of 12 gauge for guys shooting high pheasant, and lot of pairs,” Harrison said. “And we sold a lot in the U.K. to Americans who found us through magazines or other ways. “Here in the U.S., I’m seeing a lot of interest from quail hunters who like the 20 (gauge) down to the .410. That’s not surprising, as traditional quail hunting has connections with grouse or high-bird shooting in Scotland and England. There are rules, rhythms, dogs, a manner of doing things before, during and after. It’s not just going out and shooting a few birds.” Ward said the slow but steady process in the U.S. is not unexpected, nor will it be compromised. It’s not mass-production, something new every year, grab off the rack and walk out the door. That’s completely fine with him, too, as he and the team continue to build the F. Beesley line. “It’s been an absolute dream, a goal,” Ward said. “It hasn’t always been easy, of course. But I’ve been in guns since I can’t remember, and to be associated with Beesley and to carry on this legacy makes me incredibly proud. “Frederick Beesley was an inventor and tried so many things. I love that he was ambitious. It’s incredibly inspiring, still to this day. He was always looking to the future and how he could make it bet-
