OUR MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES With staff teams who are on site 24-hours a day and who have been extensively trained and upskilled to support service users with specific diagnoses, and supported by in-house MDT teams of Consultant Psychiatrists, Psychologists and Therapists, Ocean Community Services has a wide range of homes suited to service users with Mental Health disorders.

WITLA COURT, CARDIFF PATIENT INFO:

Witla Court, located in the Rumney area of Cardiff, has a very friendly atmosphere and a strong sense of community. For its service users with learning disabilities, it epitomises the aspiration of ordinary living in an ordinary street. Witla Court fully delivers against a key aim of Transforming Care; supporting even those with the most complex of needs in a community setting.

Its location is key not only to promoting social inclusion but for developing independence and greater community skills. There are excellent transport links and within a short distance there is access to local colleges, a leisure centre, shops, post office, cafes and a GP surgery.

Witla Court comprises two separate homes each accommodating four people and sharing a garden. This offers a range of opportunities for our service users to socialise, whilst also providing a low stimulus environment in which to pursue therapeutic activities, hobbies or interests. The home has been the step that many service users have needed to develop their coping strategies and community skills, preventing readmission to hospital and enabling them to step forward to greater independence through supported living or a return to their family homes. 1


Hudson House provides a homely atmosphere in a warm and friendly local community. It is in an exceptionally good location, within easy walking distance of Caerphilly town centre and bus and train stations which give good access to Cardiff and beyond. The service has been successful in preventing revolving door admissions for service users who have had many failed placements. The continuity of MDT-lead clinical care has proved invaluable to service users with very complex presentations ensuring hospital readmissions are minimised and service users are able to return to community living as soon as possible.

HUDSON HOUSE, CAERPHILLY PATIENT INFO:

Hudson House opened in 2012 in response to requests for a service for women and men with severe or enduring mental illness and personality disorder who needed 24hour social care and support to facilitate their recovery and rehabilitation in a community setting. At Hudson House service users have stepped down from medium secure services as well as coming from low secure services, locked rehabilitation or other community homes.

Ty Mynydd provides care, support and accommodation for female service users with enduring mental illness, Learning Disabilities, Autistic Spectrum Disorders and behaviours that challenge. Ty Mynydd also offers a self-contained one bedroom flat. Although connected to the rest of the house, the flat has its own private entrance to reinforce a feeling of independence. The flat enjoys its own bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen creating a complete self-contained living space. The home successfully supports service users who have stepped down from inpatient hospital placements and whose goal is to move on to more independent accommodation. 2

With nine bedrooms, including a self-contained flat, Hudson House has merged two houses to create a homely and intimate atmosphere which is vital for service users who feel lost in larger, more institutionalised environments. Each house is independent of the other, but clients are encouraged to socialise and share a communal garden.

Riverdale is ideally situated to promote recovery as it is set within easy reach of the centre of Cardiff and all its amenities and facilities, whilst also enjoying the peaceful and friendly atmosphere of the local residential area which encourages social inclusion and citizenship.

Conway House offers 24-hour residential social care and support for men with Learning Disability who are newly diagnosed with Mental Health Issues and/ or Personality Disorder.

Riverdale offers relational support to service users. At the heart of the service are the service users themselves and the house works on the principle of partnership with the service users having an active involvement in the decisions about how the house should be run.

Riverdale has been very successful in working with its service users to enable them to develop their life skills, coping strategies, increased insight and motivation to greater independence, enabling them to move onto complete independence or to supported living. Riverdale is ideal for men who prefer a smaller homely environment which is relaxed, calm and well structured.

Conway House is in the heart of its local community in the popular area of Roath on the outskirts of Cardiff City Centre. It is ideally located to promote rehabilitation and community integration with its easy access to local shops, newsagents, libraries, churches and parks. The home has a warm, welcoming atmosphere where staff provide relational support and work in equal partnership with the service users, not only to promote recovery but to take considered therapeutic risks. These are essential to support the individual to gain and implement coping strategies and develop their independent life skills. Conway House has an excellent track record of supporting service users to gain qualifications, obtain paid employment, develop their life skills and to move onto independent or supported living. Referrals are accepted from medium secure, low secure and locked rehabilitation services, as well as from individuals currently in the community whose placements do not give them the support they require.

WINDSOR ROAD, PENARTH PATIENT INFO:

Windsor Road is an attractive three-storey house that provides 24-hour specialist support for up to six women who have a learning disability, mental health issue and/or personality disorder. Furnished to a high standard, with most of the bedrooms ensuite, Windsor Road is located in the thriving seaside town of Penarth. Access to both transport links and a wide range of local amenities is good, with Penarth just a five-mile easy public transport journey away from Cardiff City Centre. Where appropriate service users will have an individual Positive Behavioural Support plan and access to in-house multi-disciplinary support, including Psychiatry, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy, Dietetics, Dialectic Behavioural Therapy. The aim of the service is to provide positive progression by supporting service users to be active participants in the local community through paid or voluntary work opportunities, encouraging participation in leisure and education activity, developing self-confidence, advocacy and independence and to manage complex behaviours and reduce vulnerability.

OVERNDALE HOUSE, BRISTOL PATIENT INFO:

Located in Downend, Bristol, Overndale House provides intensive relational support for women with the most complex needs relating to serious and enduring mental illness and or personality disorder. The model of care is based on a person-centred Recovery Model. Many of the women who are referred have stepped down from either medium, low secure or locked rehabilitation services. Frequently they have a long history of serious self-harm and our experienced and skilled staff team can support our clients to use DBT skills to regulate their emotions and to minimise self-harm. Service users are encouraged to integrate into the local community and to use leisure, occupational and educational opportunities. Within the home there is a strong emphasis on developing all the skills that are necessary for greater independence in the future and to support service users along their recovery pathway to the greatest independence possible.

hobbies. The home has a large garden and poly-tunnel where they may pursue horticultural interests and develop work related skills, the service users also care for a variety of pets. Service users are encouraged to develop their skills further, particularly those that may help them secure later employment. Service users are supported to learn money management, cookery skills, relationship skills, develop insight into needs, self-medicate, homecare and maintenance skills, and to use public transport independently.

The Glen is located on the outskirts of Newport in a beautiful rural location, which has proved ideal for those with forensic histories that preclude city living, or those that require a low stimulus environment. All service users follow an individualised activity plan and are able to pursue their own interests and

With its good access to the facilities at Newport, The Glen positively encourages community participation and citizenship with service users joining local sports teams and carrying out local voluntary work. The Glen has four bedrooms plus an accessible ground floor bedroom with ensuite.

CAERAU MANOR, NEWPORT PATIENT INFO:

Caerau Manor accepts women from both medium, low secure and locked rehabilitation from within the NHS or private sectors as well as accepting referrals from those who may need to transfer from the community. It has been very successful in supporting women with personality disorder to gain coping skills, reduce self-harm, gain insight into needs, compliance with medication and to develop family relationships and to step-down to greater independence in supported living in the community. Caerau Manor is a large house which can provide both socialising spaces as well as quieter areas for those who seek a more low stimulus environment or wish to engage in therapeutic activities.

It is ideally located to promote recovery and independence as it is set within a short walking distance of the city centre of Newport with local shops, leisure and educational facilities, cafes, newsagents, GP practice and public transport are all within short walking distance.

Caerau Manor offers an MDT model and provides support where appropriate from our own inhouse Consultant Psychiatrists and Clinical Psychologists.

Caerau Manor also offers an assisted bathroom and bedroom on the ground floor which is ideal for service users with mobility issues.

PALACE ROAD, CARDIFF PATIENT INFO:

Palace Road is a recognised centre of excellence and has forged strong links with medium secure services, low secure and locked rehabilitation hospitals who are looking to refer women with mental health diagnoses. Working in partnership with our in-house MDT, including a consultant psychiatrist and psychologist, the staff team enable our clients to maximise DBT skills and to meet their therapeutic needs,

Palace Road has also supported women with forensic histories and significant index offences, enabling them to step down from residential care to greater independence, including employment and supported living. Palace Road is ideally located to facilitate community inclusion, accessing a wide range or leisure, sporting and occupational facilities, which are essential in the development of community skills and independent living. Set in a beautiful residential area on the outskirts of Cardiff, Palace Road has excellent transport links and is within walking distance of the village of Llandaff, with its wide range of shops and cafes.

WENTWOOD COURT, NEWPORT PATIENT INFO:

Wentwood Court is a delightful, detached house and eight bungalow apartments set in a semi-rural location on the outskirts of Newport. The home is suitable for those that may require specialist aids and adaptations to meet mobility difficulties and/or physical disability. The home’s location is ideal for clients with forensic needs, where city living is inappropriate or those that prefer a more peaceful and tranquil environment.

Wentwood Court works very closely with our in-house clinicians and offers a multidisciplinary team including psychology, positive behavioural therapy, SALT, OT and physiotherapy. The model of care at Wentwood Court is based on the Recovery Model. Additionally, the use of Positive Behavioural Support plans and strategies, enables clients to reduce behaviours that challenge which may have in the past restricted the opportunities they were able to access. Referrals are accepted from medium, low-secure and locked rehabilitation services as well as the community, where placements may have been unsuccessful. Many of the service users at Wentwood Court have slow recovery pathways, with some supported right through to palliative care.

The home offers easy access to the facilities of Newport, as well as the shops, libraries, cafes and leisure centres at nearby Chepstow. Service users who are eligible for mobility are supported by the staff team to acquire their own vehicles, although the home does have its own transport. 7
