Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder

There are multiple interventions utilised for individuals with ASD that either aim to reduce behaviour(s) that might challenge, increase quality of life or addressing comorbid symptoms:

1. Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) framework (Buschbacher & Fox, 2003)

2. Cognitive behavioural therapy (van Steensel & Bögels, 2015)

3. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices

4. Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)

5. Sensory regulation and sensory diets (meeting sensory needs)

These first 2 are most relevant

Incorporating an individual’s special interest(s) into intervention is highlighted in the NICE guidelines – “maintaining the person's attention by offering regular breaks and incorporating their special interests into therapy if possible” (NICE, 2012)
