President’s Message The loss of two of Canada’s Giants in nutrition, Dr George Beaton on Monday, October 8, 2012, and Dr Bruce McDonald on Friday, April 27, 2012 saddens us and makes us focus on the following generations.

Recently the Institute for Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) held a new investigator’s meeting and I had the opportunity to meet with up and coming scientists in the fields of nutrition, diabetes and research into kidney disease. An impressive group and there is no need to worry that we are lacking new talent in Canada!

CNS continues to build and grow. January 8, 2013 will see our first daylong regional conference, providing another opportunity to get together and hear great Science. Organized

by Dr David Ma and his hardworking team, it focuses on “Advances in Dietary Fats and Nutrition”. Planning for the 2013 Québec City conference is well underway and promises a meeting full of great presentations by leaders in the field in Nutrition. Our hosts, Dr. Angelo Tremblay and Dr. Benoit Lamarche, will make certain you enjoy your stay in Quebec and have plenty of time to meet with colleagues, new and old.

Your Society is getting more and more widely recognised and our volunteers are hard at work. We welcome new volunteers to sit on committees, share the work and enjoy working with fellow nutrition enthusiasts. The Society is reaching out to cover a broad range of areas of nutrition from our strong base in basic science, clinical care and is now reaching out to more members working in the international health arena.

Our ways of keeping you up to date on what is going on the field are expanding: a new calendar of events about which we hear on the website; a new "clinical corner" in Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism (APNM); and a new monthly publishing schedule for the journal. You may join Linkedin or follow us on Twitter to be kept super informed.

Your Society is representing you in many arenas. The Canadian Malnutrition Task Force (CMTF) of the Society is examining hospital malnutrition in adult and now pediatric settings. We are participating in a project to develop Nutrition Guidelines for women in their reproductive years initiated by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada.

We have put in a bid to host the International Congress of Nutrition in Vancouver in 2021 and will be promoting this in Spain in 2013.

From the Executive From the Communications Committee It has been a busy year for communications. We continue to provide new avenues to reach out, communicate and inform our members. New this year includes the addition of social media tools including Twitter and LinkedIn. Launched in the summer, you can follow CNS on Twitter at CNS_SCN. In the fall, a CNSSCN group was formed in the professional networking site, LinkedIn. Both Twitter and LinkedIn allow members and interested others (non-members) to follow events and nutrition news.

Changes have also occurred on the CNS website, with the addition of a calendar of events and a live Twitter feed. If you have or know of an event or news that should be communicated, let us know at info@cns-scn.ca.

News from the Students CNS is working on new initiatives for its student members. A pilot program is underway at the University of Toronto to further engage students with CNS and the greater nutrition community in Canada. Goals of the initiative include: a) facilitate two-way communication between students and CNS and, b) facilitate educational and professional development opportunities for students.

An aim of the pilot project will be to extend the initiative to universities across Canada with nutrition programs.

Laura Chiavaroli, MSc, PhD Candidate, Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto, has been selected as the Department’s Student Representative. Extension of the pilot program to other universities will be led by the National CNS University Liaison, Shannan Grant, PhD Candidate, University of Toronto, with the support of the CNS National Student Representative, Ashley Patterson, PhD, University of Waterloo, and the CNS Membership Committee Chair, Pauline Darling, RD, PhD.

To kick off the pilot program and the Department of Nutritional Sciences - Canadian Nutrition Society Student Seminar Series, Russell de Souza, RD, ScD gave a talk titled “Understanding Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and their Clinical Applications” in August 2012. Dr. de Souza is a CIHR post-doctoral research fellow at McMaster University's Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. In his talk, he discussed systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and how his research group has used these tools to review the existing data on fructose. The event was well attended (about 65 students, faculty and staff) by the University of Toronto Department of Nutritional Science community.

In Memoriam The Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS) mourns the loss of two of its great members, Dr. George Beaton, OC and Dr. Bruce McDonald.

Dr. Beaton was an Emeritus Professor and former Chair of the Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto, and an Officer of the Order of Canada. He played an influential role in establishing the Canada Food Guide and worked tirelessly with the United Nations and the World Health Organization to improve nutrition and reduce mortality of children in low-income countries. Dr. Beaton had a profound and significant influence on the careers and lives of many CNS members across Canada and internationally. He was an Emeritus Member of CNS and the inspiration for the CNS George Beaton Award in Public Health Nutrition.

Dr. McDonald was a Professor at Macdonald College of McGill University and later, Professor and Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba, which honoured him with a scholarship in his name. After his retirement from teaching, he served as Executive Director of the Manitoba Health Research Council, and held appointments with Health Canada/Heart and Stroke Canada and the Canadian AgriFood Policy Institute. He influenced a generation of nutrition scientists and clinicians through his teaching, research, work as an administrator, and activities as an author. His interests are reflected in his degrees in agriculture, nutrition and biochemistry, and he may be said to be truly one of the pioneers in the “gate to plate” model of nutrition.

The team of researchers includes Dr. Jill Parnell (Mount Royal University), Dr. Jay Han (Leduc Food Processing Development Centre) and Mr. Troy Sturzenegger (Leduc Food Processing Development Centre).

Dr. Jill Parnell received a 2-year Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research grant to evaluate the supplementation habits and dietary intakes of young athletes. The team of researchers includes Kelly Anne Erdman, MSc, RD (Sport Medicine Centre, Calgary) and Kristin Wiens, RD (Mount Royal University).

Masters Degree: Alaa Almasud (Mazurak) – Elevated Fatty Acid Content in Muscle is Prevented by EPA and DHA in an Animal Model of Colorectal Cancer Receiving CPT-11 / 5-FU Maryam Ebadi (Mazurak) – Alterations in fat metabolism in colorectal cancer patients Howe-Ming Yu (Field) – Establishing the anti-cancer effects of long chain n-3 and n-6 fatty acids, a novel plant oil, and conjugated linoleic acid on human breast cancer cells Abeer Alzaben (Mager) – Bone health and growth in children undergoing liver transplantation.

From the Regional Correspondents Dr. Susan Whiting was the 2012 recipient of the Earle Willard McHenry Award of the Canadian Nutrition Society (CNS) Distinguished Service in Nutrition. Susan received the award at the CNS annual conference in May in Vancouver.

Dr. Mariam Alaverdashvili has recently joined the College as a Research Associate with Phyllis Paterson to undertake research on synchrotron medical imaging as applied to the study of stroke.

Navita Viveky, PhD Candidate (advisor Dr. Whiting) was the recipient a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Institute Community Support (ICS) Travel Award with the Institute of Aging to present her work at the International Academy on Nutrition and Aging in July in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA; an American Society of Nutrition travel award and acceptance to attend the 4-day Dietary Supplement Research Practicum held in June, conducted by National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. Getahun Lombamo (supervisors, Drs. Henry and Zello) and Hiwot Abebe (supervisors, Drs. Henry and Bob Tyler, Agriculture and BioResources) who are associated with the Ethiopia project “Improving Nutrition in Ethiopia through Plant Breeding and Soil Management”, received the Dean of Graduate Student Award and National/International graduate student awards.

Effective August, 2012, the Department of Human Nutritional Sciences general office was officially moved back into the Duff Roblin Building. The Duff Roblin Building had a major fire event in March 2009, resulting in temporary relocation of Human Nutritional Sciences researchers and students to labs at both the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, and the Canadian Centre for AgriFood Research in Health and Medicine. While the fire created challenges, a number of serendipitous outcomes have resulted in new collaborations, funding successes and a strong collegial environment.

Congratulations to Dr. Micheal Eskin who was awarded the prestigious 2012 Stephen S. Change Award for Lipid Science by the Institute of Food Technologists for his significant contributions to lipid science. His work helped to establish canola oil as an important oil in the world market. The award represents the highest honor in lipid science. The award, which includes a Steuben Crystal Structure, recognizes his 40 years

Chwen Johnson, was awarded the Speaking of Food and Healthy Living award for the Central and Southern Ontario Region at the Dietitians of Canada national conference. Chwen developed the program “Healthy Eating Adds Up: a fitness, nutrition, and food skills education program for adults with developmental disabilities” as part of her Master’s thesis requirements under the supervision of Dr. June Matthews.

From the Regional Correspondents Malnutrition Task Force (CMTF), which is completing the adult arm of the Nutrition Care in Canadian Hospitals study this fall.

Heather and her CMTF colleagues presented at the CNS 2012 conference as well as Dietitians of Canada on the implementation of nutrition screening for acute care. Other activities include the launch of Nutri-eSCREEN and internet platform for older adult nutrition screening and selfmanagement (www.eatrightontario.ca/escreen). A similar platform is being created for Toddler and Preschooler NutriSTEP, on which Heather is a co-investigator.

On August 27-28, Dr. David Rose (Biology) hosted a meeting of the international Starch Digestion Consortium (SDC) in Waterloo. The group is noted for its work on understanding the process of starch metabolism to glucose by human intestinal enzymes. The research includes close interaction with clinicians and the company QOL Medical, which markets Sucraid as a treatment for Congenital Sucrase-Isomaltase Deficiency (CSID). Novel inhibitors developed by the SDC hold promise in regulating blood glucose levels, with potential relevance to diabetes and obesity. Presentations from Dr. Robin Duncan (Kinesiology) and Dr. Trevor Charles (Biology) on nutrition and gut microbial metagenomics at Waterloo were part of the curriculum.

On October 29, 2012, the University of Waterloo, School of Pharmacy will host an interprofessional educational event entitled; Functional Foods, Nutraceuticals, and Beyond: Next Steps in Collaborative Practice. The event is intended for practitioners, researchers, and educators and is being coordinated

by Dr. Cynthia Richard (Pharmacy), Dr. Nancy Waite (UW School of Pharmacy) and Dr. William Bettger (U of Guelph HHNS). Presentations will be given by Marg Alfieri (RD), Dr. Kim Bretz (ND), Dr. Alison Duncan (U of Guelph HHNS), Dr. Paul Spagnuolo (Pharmacy), and Dr. Ken Stark (Kinesiology).

Dr. Sue Horton is working with a group of colleagues to update a 2008 series on nutrition interventions in developing countries (led by Robert Black of Johns Hopkins) for the Lancet.

Her contribution focuses on the total cost of the interventions proposed for the priority developing countries, and she will attend a conference at Hopkins on September 4 and 5, as part of the writing process. She is also presenting on the costs of micronutrient deficiencies in Europe, and the cost-effectiveness of interventions at the European Health Forum in Salzburg in October 2012 and at the Journées Francophone de Nutrition in Lyons, France, on December 12-14.

Dr. Robin Duncan recently received a CFI infrastructure award for “The Discovery of New Genes in Brain Lipid Metabolism for Health and Disease” and she has received operating funds from the NSERC Discovery program in May 2012.

From the Regional Correspondents Dr. John Dwyer is a member of an expert panel that advised Cancer Care Ontario and Public Health Ontario on the development of evidence-based policy recommendations for the Ontario government to support physical activity promotion and chronic disease prevention in the province. These recommendations are discussed in the report, Taking Action to Prevent Chronic Disease: Recommendations for a Healthier Ontario. (http://www.oahpp.ca/takingaction/) Dr. Laura Forbes joined the Applied Human Nutrition (AHN) faculty in July 2012. Laura completed her undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at Acadia University and her PhD in Nutrition and Metabolism at the University of Alberta with Dr. Linda McCargar. She comes to Guelph from her postdoc which she also did at the University of Alberta with Dr. Rhonda Bell. Laura's research program focuses on assessing dietary intake during key developmental periods (adolescence, pregnancy) with the goal of preventing chronic disease, specifically, diabetes and obesity.

Dr. Jess Haines received a Danone Grant-in-Aid grant to pilot test a parent-based obesity prevention intervention. Dr. Haines participated in a webinar, sponsored by the Danone Institute of Canada entitled: Parking lots, playgrounds, and parents. Dr. Haines also took part in developing and delivering a Danone webinar entitled “Parents, parking lots, playground and the impact on preschoolers”. The implications of the built and family environment on the nutritional health and risk of obesity in young children. The webinar also involved Dr. Tracie Barnett from University of Montreal and was hosted by Dr. Catherine Field, University of Alberta.

Eight students from the 2011-12 class completed the Masters of Applied Nutrition (MAN) program.

Eleven MAN students have started their academic and practicum experiences this fall. The cohort size has increased thanks to the support of our community partners and their dedication to supporting the education and training of future professionals. The MAN program is coordinated by Alexia Prescod.

Dr. Janis Randall Simpson and colleagues from the NutriSTEP® research team (including Dr. Heather Keller, now at the University of Waterloo) received a Knowledge Translation Supplement from CIHR to mount the NutriSTEP® questionnaires on the Dietitians of Canada website. This site will be for parents to access the questionnaires and to get feedback messages based on their responses. A Toddler NutriSTEP® for children 18 - 35 months was launched on 1 September 2012 and is available at: www.Flintbox.com.

Her abstract, Dietary Fatty Acids Modulate Visceral Fat Adipokine Secretion and Induce Skeletal Muscle Inflammation Without Affecting Insulin Responsiveness, Ex Vivo, was selected as among the top 15 (out of over 100 applicants) based on reviewer scores of scientific merit. Jessica recently finished a post-doctoral research fellowship in the Centre of Health Promotion (School of Public Health) at the University of Alberta after receiving her doctoral degree from the University of Waterloo’s School of Public Health and Health Systems in 2011. Prior to this, Jessica completed a combined Masters/Internship (followed by a MSc) at the University of Guelph and has been practicing as a registered dietitian since 2005. From the Regional Correspondents from Dr. Bazinet’s lab received the 2012 Lilian Thompson Seminar Award; Bibiana Bailo-Garcia from Dr. El-Sohemy’s lab received the American Society for Nutrition Nutritional Sciences Council 2012 Graduate Student Research Award; and Jessica Omand, co-supervised by Dr. Maguire and Dr. Darling, came in 2nd place in the Oral Presentation competition at the Keenan Research Centre of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St Michael's Hospital.

Professor Emerita Harriet Kuhnlein contributed to the planning of the World Public Health Nutrition Association Congress in Rio de Janiero 27-30 of April. Étudiants Katherine Chabot, une étudiante à la maîtrise du laboratoire du Dr Rémi Rabasa-Lhoret a obtenu la prestigieuse bourse Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada des IRSC. Daniel-Constantin Manolescu du laboratoire du Dr Pangala Bhat a reçu la médaille d’argent pour sa présentation par affiche lors de la Compétition Nationale IRSC/CIHR pour les étudiants au doctorat en Sciences de la Santé.

Conseils alimentaires offerts aux proches aidants des personnes atteintes » (Eating well with Alzheimer’s disease. Le cours autodidacte sur la gestion de la malnutrition sévère est maintenant disponible en ligne, sur le site du projet Pôle DFN (http://www.poleDFN.org). Ce cours vaut un crédit

d’études supérieurs de nutrition à l’Université de Montréal et deux crédits à l’Institut régional de santé publique (IRSP) du Bénin. Il faut donc s’inscrire à l’une ou l’autre institution pour que cette formation soit sanctionnée.

Le Département de Nutrition a mis sur pied un programme de soutien offert aux superviseurs de stages. L’objectif général de ce programme est d’aider les superviseurs à exercer leurs rôles plus efficacement. Le programme consiste en deux formations : 1) Comprendre le raisonnement clinique pour mieux le soutenir et 2) Approche réflexive : approche essentielle au raisonnement clinique du stagiaire.
