Legal Services of Central New York Who We Are For more than 50 years, Legal Services of Central New York has fought to help people overcome obstacles, achieve goals, and pursue justice. In 2020 our 40 attorneys in 7 offices across 13 counties helped more than12,000 people in nearly 4,500 cases, building pathways out of poverty and fighting for justice and opportunity for all.
Our Impact There is no right to a free appointed lawyer in most civil cases. Legal Services of Central New York helps people: facing eviction or homelessness; struggling with cancer or HIV; being discriminated against when applying for a job or treated unfairly at work or school; being taken advantage of by businesses; being denied health care or education; applying to obtain or keep public benefits; being denied services because of immigration status or limited English proficiency; being subjected to inhumane jail conditions; or facing other life-changing civil legal issues. Recent case highlights include: Williamson v. Maciol—Federal civil rights lawsuit in which we represent women detained in a local jail under conditions which are unequal to those of the male inmates. The women housed at the jail have less than half the space as the men, and lack the same access to fresh air and exercise. Pandemic Unemployment—We represented a refugee with underlying health conditions who worked in a factory. When the employee saw that COVID-19 health requirements were being ignored at his work site, he complained to the employer, who did nothing to fix the problems. The employee left the job, so as not to jeopardize his health and that of his family. In a first of its kind decision, the Unemployment Appeals Board found that the employee was justified in leaving employment where the employer was failing to follow New York State’s COVID-19 protocols. Unlawful Evictions—During the COVID-19 eviction moratorium, several landlords have sought to force tenants out of their homes through “self-help” evictions. Some landlords have shut off power and water, changed locks, and threatened tenants with physical injury and property damage. We have gone to court to stop this illegal conduct, and worked with local prosecutors to bring some of the first prosecutions in the state for illegal evictions.
