From The Hip!

In my last writing, I alluded to a recent study of our development and and marketing programs.

Certain constituents questioned whether La Salle College High School is academically on par with regional independent schools. While other schools tend to boast of their achievements, we have taken a different approach and avoided ”grade inflation.” The fact is that our Lasallian commitment to rigorous learning has resulted in countless academic achievements.

Every year, over 20% of La Salle’s graduating class matriculates at one of the top 50 colleges or universities in America. The Class of 2005 is en route to 89 different colleges and universities The average SAT score (combined Verbal and Math) for La Salle students is 1204 (recent publications have not used current figures), with the top 30% of our students having a combined SAT score of 1322 The Class of 2005 earned documented scholarships and grants in excess of $15.2 million, which helped to defray the rising costs of higher education La Salle offers 19 AP courses, which is more than any of the other independent schools, and 84% of the 200 students who took the AP exam in 2005 scored 3 or better and are eligible for college credit In the last three years, La Salle has produced 28 National Merit Semifinalists and 67 National Merit Commended Students

La Salle students are taught to face challenges and solve problems. More importantly, the mission of La Salle College High School has at its core, a student body that is diverse.

Socio-Economic (not just those who can afford to attend as over 35% of our students receive financial aid) ­­ Geographic (last year’s graduating class represented 84 grade schools and 63 zip codes) Academic (not just the brightest and the best; rather, an academically diverse group of students that discover an independence of thought and action that helps them to accept responsibility for themselves and prepares them to take their place in the world)

La Salle students are accepted at and attend some of the finest colleges and universities. La Salle’s College Counseling Center does not just place students; rather, builds a relationship with each student and counsels them to make an informed decision based on interests, abilities, values, and the financial needs of their family. La Salle students are well prepared for college – academically, intellectually, and socially – and less than 4% of La Salle students transfer schools once they begin their college career, which provides further evidence of the remarkable efforts ­­of our College Counseling Center in matching students with the best college or university for their needs. I can assure you that La Salle is academically above par and our students are the proof.

Misconceptions are often a result of miscommunication. Communication and education go “hand in hand” as communication is the first ­­step in educating constituents on the successes and developments at La Salle College High School. One of the many goals of our new marketing and development programs is to improve communication and send a message that is clear, concise, and consistent.

Evolution… …the Signature of La Salle College High School.

History The coat-of-arms for the House of Salla was first displayed in the County of Urgel, in Catalonia, Spain, where the family patriarch, Johan Salla, was the warrior chief of Alphonsus the Chaste, King of Oviedo. Together they expelled the Moors from Urgel. The broken legs that Johan Salla sustained during combat as he fought side-by-side with his King are the origin of the broken chevrons of gold on a field of azure (blue) in the Salla Family coat-of-arms. In the thirteenth century, the Salla Family migrated to the Basque province in the south of France, and although their name became French (De La Salle), they retained “SALLA” as their battle cry. The family later migrated to Rheims, France, the birthplace of St. John Baptist de La Salle.

The Signature of La Salle College High School The signature of La Salle College High School is derived from the seal (or emblem), which is a fundamental identifier of the school.

At the center of the seal rests the crest (or coat-of-arms) of La Salle College High School. The top of the crest contains a battle helmet representing the family of St. John Baptist de La Salle and their warrior heritage from Spain. The bottom features the Latin motto Virtus Scientia, meaning Virtue and Knowledge, along with 1858, the year in which La Salle College High School was founded by the Christian Brothers at St. Michael parish in North Philadelphia.

The center of the crest bears the quartered shield. The shield is divided by a cross, the core of all Christian symbols, and a statement to the school’s adherence to Catholic values and traditions, which are embodied in the teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Christian Brothers. In the upper left hand corner is the star of faith of the Christian Brothers, which signifies the faith the school seeks to foster in its students. The lower right hand corner holds a single fracted chevron. The fracted (or broken) chevron has been used over the centuries by followers of St. John Baptist de La Salle to evoke his memory. The coat of arms of the De La Salle Family portrays three such chevrons of gold on a field of blue.

The signature of La Salle College High School consists of a mark and typography. The mark is the quartered shield, which for decades has remained in the forefront of Lasallian symbols. The typography features Bodoni BE Condensed, a serif font that complements the mark. The signature retains the traditional La Salle colors of Blue and Gold, which stem from the original coat-of-arms of the De La Salle Family.

The devastation in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast was overwhelming. Almost no one in this area was unaffected and over one million people are either homeless or suffering from the terrible consequences of Hurricane Katrina, including Lasallians, Brothers and partners, and schools in the New Orleans area (New Orleans and Santa Fe District).

With 291 students, the Class of 2009 is the largest in the history of La Salle College High School. The class began its career at La Salle on Tuesday, September 6, 2005 by planting a class tree and learning the school’s Alma Mater from Marty Stanczak ’­60, Dean of Students.

In solidarity with our Lasallians in the New Orleans area and in an effort to provide assistance, the La Salle community of students, parents, faculty, and staff held a collection in the school from September 13 – 15, 2005. A total of $10,006.00 was raised and $10,000,00 was sent to the Christian Brothers Conference specifically for hurricane relief for those in the New Orleans area.

Two Christian Brothers’ schools, St. Paul’s High School in Covington, LA and De La Salle High School in the Garden District of New Orleans, sustained serious damage.

La Salle College High School reached out to these two schools and offered to take as many as fifteen students to finish all or part of their senior year at La Salle. The La Salle community responded overwhelmingly to a request for “host families” as over fifty families offered to take these boys into their homes. Fortunately, both of the schools felt that they could reopen their doors by November and most of the boys expressed a strong desire to stay in the area and return to school.

La Salle’s offer to these schools will remain “open”, but efforts will now focus on providing unique ways in which we can utilize our talents and strengths to help other schools in this ravaged area.

Alumni Association President’s Corner At graduation practice this past June, I had the chance to ADDRESS the Class of 2005. They were obviously still caught up in the excitement of what had been accomplished over their past year. With five league championships, scholarships totaling $15.2 million, 8 National Merit Finalists, 24 National Merit Commended students, 87 members of the National Honor Society, and various band awards, they were rightfully excited with their accomplishments.

I asked them to decide what their legacy would be. I suspect it’s difficult for them at this juncture to comprehend fully how much more they have to offer as a class. As they walk out of the building following graduation, there can be a sense that one door is closing as the next opens. While in certain respects this is true, what sets La Salle apart is the fact that the door never really closes.

While the accomplishments of the class of 2005 are great, it will only be the beginning of their legacy. Each class has its opportunity to define and break down the barriers in which it will operate. Yes, in large part the accomplishments may be individual accolades. But as a La Salle community, there will be the opportunities to cross class years, to continue to leave the mark of St. John Baptist de La Salle. How we latch on to those opportunities is what makes our institution great.

La Salle College High School honors its students in many ways. The placards in the gym and trophy case testify, in part, to the accomplishments of students during their four years at La Salle. The Hall of Fame gives recognition to alumni of La Salle. Admission here is driven by what graduates have accomplished since their four years at La Salle. What is done with the tools and the fire in the heart bestowed while at La Salle is really what drives our legacy; how our class is remembered. Looking at the Class of 1955, the graduates of 2005 saw its members proudly participating in graduation. They also saw a class that moved beyond the various trophies and championships seen in the gym and the trophy cases. Not only did they produce three Hall of Fame inductees, but their service to the school and the community is possibly unmatched by any other class.

“Boys will be boys but La Salle boys will be gentlemen.” No doubt I was made to understand what this meant as the expectation of my behavior during my four years at La Salle (having grown up around the Christian Brothers). But I then learned how this expectation carries beyond that brief part of our lives. I’ve probably been reminded of this principle more since leaving La Salle than during my tenure there. It encompasses not only the conduct once we “Enter to Learn”, but also once we “Leave to Serve”.

The call to service needs to start somewhere. I am honored to give my service to La Salle this coming year as President of your Alumni Association. Being a “Brothers’ Boy” is more than having the diploma. It’s carrying on the principles of St. John Baptist de La Salle in whatever small way we can. Be it by helping with our various Christmas projects, helping students to better understand the opportunities ahead of them on Career Day, or honoring some of our exceptional graduates at our Communion Breakfast and Hall of Fame induction. Our hope is to provide our alumni more opportunities to make a difference.

Taking this to heart, I’ll be sure to laugh often over this coming year. In our programs, I’ll take advantage of our opportunities to earn the affection of young children (probably easier than the respect of intelligent people). I’ll listen to your criticism and learn from it. I’ll continue to appreciate the beauty our school continues to march out its driveway.

We all have the opportunity to share in this endeavor. For those of us looking for ways to get started, supporting your Alumni Association can be an integral part of that plan. The money we raise from our various events and even dues serve to financially support sons and grandsons of alumni who otherwise might not be able to benefit from a fine La Salle education. Come out to our events so I have a chance to laugh with you. It’s a small way to make a difference, and I bet you’ll find that you’ll have fun and feel good about it in the process. Remember that aspiring to financially assist more families of alumni is the worthwhile cause driving all of our efforts. May we all succeed together!!

The influence of John Baptist de La Salle upon the world of education was initially felt with the establishment of his first school in 1679. Today, his impact on education is much more profound as it is felt in over 900 schools in Africa, North and South America, Asia, Australia and Europe. Nearly one million students all across the world attend Lasallian institutions on a daily basis.

Initially, John Baptist de La Salle’s mission was to establish gratuitous schools for children of workmen and the poor; teaching them reading, writing and arithmetic while using the catechism to give these students an education with the purpose of forming good Christians. He saw these schools as a response to the needs of his society – the education of poor boys.

The primary focus of De La Salle and the group of men that would become known as the Brothers of the Christian schools was to establish gratuitous schools so that students could be prepared for useful occupations. One of the more innovative aspects of the first Lasallian schools was the use of the vernacular in instruction. This was in response to the obvious need of those first students to be able to read and write in French in order to gain employment.

Besides training his own teachers thoroughly, De La Salle spent a part of his life training secular teachers throughout the French countryside.

In 1705, De La Salle accepted the requests of a number of wealthy families to open a Christian boarding school for their children. This involved an enlargement of the curriculum to help prepare these young men for their professional careers. These schools remained gratuitous even though money was accepted for food and lodging of the pupils. Four years later De La Salle enlarged his first boarding facility in order to assume responsibility as well as care for young delinquents from wealthier families. Rehabilitation was the ultimate goal for these young men who could, if their conduct was deemed satisfactory, join the other boarders.

In response to the needs of 19th Century France, the Brothers made notable contributions to the development of technical schools, schools of agriculture and schools of design, which served localized needs.

How has De La Salle’s Philosophy evolved?

Throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the Brothers of the Christian Schools and its lay partners continue De La Salle’s work through their commitment to the education of young people, and in particular for the poor. They have further defined the poor as lacking financially, spiritually or socially. This relationship with the poor challenges all Lasallian educators, even those who teach in institutions similar to La Salle High School, to sensitize those students in their charge to the plight of the poor and to challenge them to serve the poor, the sick, and the aging. The Brothers and their lay partners have been active on behalf of refugees and immigrants.

They have opened orphanages and centers for young people in trouble with the law. They have established centers for young people who have learning differences. They have established programs for young people and adults who have dropped out of school. They currently run educational programs for street children. Elementary schools such as La Salle Academy in Kensington and the St. Miguel School in Camden are providing many children who are living at or below the poverty level with a Lasallian education at minimal or in many cases, no cost.

Today, the goal of Lasallian institutions worldwide, whether serving the poor directly, or through the affluent, remains the same: “To work hard to awaken, in its students, a sense of meaning of their lives as individuals. It should help the student develop a sense of autonomy through personal reflection and the development of a critical spirit. The student should be helped to think clearly, to express their personal opinions and to seek out and to respect the truth. Students are taught to make use of their freedoms, to overcome prejudices, ready made ideas and social pressures. Lastly, students are encouraged to listen, to seek, to understand, to trust others, to be ready to help others, to love, to respect, to contemplate: all of this as an attempt to help the student to develop in the image of God”.

What would St. John Baptist de La Salle think about the David Program?

by John Keenan ’80 St. John Baptist de La Salle would say La Salle College High School’s long tradition of educating and guiding young men of various abilities and backgrounds in a challenging and nurturing environment continues with the addition of The David Program.

The David Program continues La Salle’s legacy of touching the minds and hearts of students by providing adaptive study strategies, and an understanding of academic strengths and weaknesses to increase the students sense of self worth.

The David Program assists students with mild learning differences and is housed in a building adjacent to the Brothers’­Residence.

As quoted by a David Center student, “St. La Salle would like the David Program because even though he was the promoter of teaching a full classroom of students, he never lost sight of the individual student’s needs. The David Program addresses the individual learning styles of students so the role of St. La Salle is continued.”

St. La Salle looked into the core of the individual. La Salle was a hands-on teacher. He advocated the use of practical, easy to implement teaching methods. He believed students should be taught in their native language instead of Latin, as was the custom.

The David Program continues to search for methods to meet each student’s personal needs. Today, some students with language processing difficulties use “Books on Tape” as they read. Students are encouraged to use technology to enhance their learning repertoire. By using appropriate accommodations and adaptive strategies students become aware of their invisible differences and are able to turn their weaknesses into strengths.

St. La Salle listened to people, saw needs, felt compassion, and prayed to the Spirit for guidance. He used every resource to gain assistance. St. La Salle believed in the intellectual and gentlemanly potential of boys of all classes and backgrounds.

He believed in the worth of each of these young men and used insight and adaptability to find success. St. La Salle believed a man should always be growing, maturing, and developing.

Through the David Program students learn that challenges can be exciting and that if they focus and stay on course nothing is beyond their capacity. The David Program strives to inspire, affirm and empower young men to discover their God given potential and to realize that life is an amazing journey. It is a message that would make St. John Baptist de La Salle smile.

The David Program provides a daily class period for a selected number of college bound students with a mild learning difference. Through a seriousness of purpose, consistent effort , understanding and acceptance of his individual learning styles/ strengths, and adapted strategies, a student with a learning difference can grow towards self-a­dvocacy and academic success.

The addition of a specific time frame is a continuation of the Lasallian effort to meet the specific needs of students.

What Would St. John Baptist de La Salle think about the Lacrosse and Athletic Programs?

by Bill Leahy Introduction If the Founder were to visit La Salle College High School and spend time watching the athletic program he would be both proud and a tad puzzled. Confused in that organized athletics were not an every day part of the schooling of young men entrusted to his care in 17th century France. Plus, his schools were for the “street urchins” of his day and were not necessarily funded to support such extra-curricular activities.

Nevertheless, De La Salle understood, maybe better than any educator of his day, the importance and significance of teamwork. Therefore, after overcoming his initial curiosity in regard to such sports as American football, baseball, and Native American lacrosse he would see, I think, value in such interpersonal activities – the teamwork they require, the character they build, the sense of commitment and personal responsibility that is needed, and of course the over-riding mission to develop boys into men.

Introduction to La Salle Lacrosse Program The lacrosse program, like so many of La Salle’s athletic teams, has experienced its share of success on the field – 12 Philadelphia Catholic League Championships, 1 State Championship, and hundreds of individual player recognitions ranging from All-Catholics, to All-Americans, to Division I Collegians. While success breeds winning and excellent public relations, De La Salle would be more concerned with the introspective side of such an endeavor. The Founder’s original classrooms were the first school in the world to educate a group of students (players) at the same time all learning from the same teacher (coach) and attempting to reach a common goal. What goals were they? Well the obvious – to educate poor boys in academic subjects, but also to teach them the importance of everyday manners and respect as well as the importance of developing an interior spiritual life.

Academics It would be obvious to La Salle that lacrosse is a game which has the potential to offer the young man many life skills and attributes, but that in the end it is still a game and is a priority clearly second to the classroom.

Players’ grades are monitored, flexibility granted for academic needs, tutoring arranged as needed, and study hall created for extreme concerns. In fact, De La Salle might just be most interested in the young men struggling to balance both academics and athletics for in many ways these are the type of young people he was most drawn to serving long ago.

Respect The first non-academic attribute that would be pleasing to the Founder would be the sense and attitude of respect that is present throughout the program from coaches to players to parents whether on the field, in the weight room, or the locker room. Lacrosse, as played by the Native American Indians, was a gift given by God to the birds and the animals and then to humans. In its spiritual form it demanded that all contestants be mentally and physically tough, that they use appropriate language, that they never sit, but run on the field, and that they end their contests with handshakes and a sense of community. All of these attributes are present in today’s La Salle Lacrosse program.

Competition & Teamwork After academic responsibility, and a sense of respect for the sport, the school, the players and coaches has been established, De La Salle might then turn his attention to the game itself, and to whether or not the group is working successfully to attain its common goals.

The program’s success over the past 15 years has been substantial, but underneath the headlines has been the sweaty hours of field practice, countless film sessions, and demanding visits to the weight room. This sense of commitment, teamwork, and competition not only creates winning, but also develops character through success and disappointment.

Together the young men and coaching staffs work toward common personal and team goals, thus building a sense of achievement, community, and purpose.

De La Salle would also be concerned about the competitiveness of such a program, for nothing is perfect, and the nature of competition is designed to create both a “winner” and a “loser” and so I believe he would reluctantly comment in regard to its intensity which ultimately leads to team selections which then excludes those not chosen for the team experience. While this may be providential and lead those not selected to other successful endeavors it also creates sadness, feelings of rejection, denial of actual talent levels. De La Salle might share in the frustration of solving this dilemma because just adding other teams is not an option due to limited field space, financial restrictions, and availability of qualified coaches.

Toughness Like most Saints, De La Salle had tough times! His schools were threatened by jealous competitors, his financial backers often disappeared, the students often were unruly and “rag tag” so that classroom discipline was challenging. Eventually these challenges, and many more, pushed the Founder to an emotional breaking point where he had to decide between ending his mission and seeing it through to the end regardless of its outcome. For La Salle this meant committing himself totally in what became known as the “heroic vale” – to fully commit to his new enterprise by thus abandoning his personal wealth and choosing to “live on bread alone” if necessary.

No one needs to remind him that life is difficult, and that we, too, are driven to the point of every day frustration, set backs, and hopelessness.

Athletics, and its sense of competition and immediate observable rewards/failures, can be a microcosm of this life lesson and so La Salle would hear the lacrosse coaches consistently express the importance of “finishing strong”…a drill, a practice, a weight lift, a season, a test, a tough class, a school year, or the rest of us a work day! It is one thing to be defeated on the field by a better opponent, quite another to be outworked, and it is unacceptable to quit, but each of these dims in comparison to the larger failure of not growing in our life mission to become men.

Spiritual Life & Community Lacrosse may have more spiritual roots than any game in America, and while French Jesuits may have given the Indian game its name its ties to the spiritual life are almost expected, thus the La Salle Lacrosse program has two spiritual responsibilities.

First, to make sure the players understand and respect the Native American game – its myths and legends and how it is a gift from God, and second, to then implement our Catholic heritage.

This is primarily accomplished through a common respect and concern among the players, a season opening Mass, and a joint Community service “Branch-Out Day” with La Salle’s Baseball program to St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Germantown where the players help prepare the parish fields and garden for their summer camp children. The day ends with a joint cook-out and sense of shared mission for others.

Conclusion Ultimately, these experiences, intertwined with the joys of winning and the agony of defeat help, create a sense of community and belonging which hopefully empowers players, coaches, and parents’ current friendships and, thus inspires future endeavors. The entire lacrosse experience should be fun! We all need to have fun because it brings out the child in us and allows, as De La Salle so often said, “for hearts to be touched”.

What would St. John Baptist de La Salle think of the Web Site?

La Salle has complemented traditional means of curriculum delivery with technology for years. Computer Labs and SMART Boards have been two of the most visible academic technologies at La Salle. The new web site is just another example of technology making a practical impact on the delivery of course material.

St. John Baptist de La Salle was an educational pioneer. In late 17th Century France, most education was conducted in Latin.

De La Salle, however, thought that learning in Latin was impractical for the students in his schools. They could learn to read and write more rapidly in their native language.

With students spending almost three hours a day on the Internet, it has become an essential part of their culture and communication skill set. As educators of the young, it makes sense for us to communicate with our students through the Web.

Thus, De La Salle instructed his teachers to teach in the vernacular. As with so many of his educational innovations, conducting lessons in the vernacular was very practical.

The practical value was quite evident and the practice of teaching in the native language of students has been so widely adopted, it may hardly seem like such an innovation today.

The faculty at La Salle has responded to this new form of communication with students and embraced the delivery of course content via the Internet. With the new web site, faculty members now have the ability to update course web pages from anywhere they have Internet access making communication reach beyond the confines of class periods classrooms.

In today’s world, the word innovation seems inextricably tied to technology. Technology has become so much a part of our lives – especially the lives of the young students we serve – that it can be thought of as part of the native language.

I think St. John Baptist de La Salle would embrace the use of technology in delivering curriculum, the same way he insisted that the Brothers in his schools teach their young students in the language they were used to.

Although always stressing that the relationship and communication between teacher and student is at the heart of the educational experience, De La Salle recognized the need for a good administration and support services. Like a good administrator, the web site is a support for teachers, making it possible for them to use their gift to the fullest.

The web site is also a tool for the various constituencies beyond teachers and students. Administrators, parents, alumni, and coaches are some of the constituencies that are using the web site to communicate with the La Salle College High School Community. By strengthening the communication with and between these constituencies, the web site is helping to strengthen the supports that make the educational experiences here possible. I think De La Salle would certainly view the web site and the resulting communication as both practical and necessary for the education of the youth we serve.

It is only fitting that we follow in De La Salle’s innovative footsteps and embrace the new “vernacular”.

Will Be

Gentlemen” The timeless motto has returned in the form of signs posted in each classroom. New Principal, Joe Marchese (right) with Jack Meehan, Jr. ’67 who donated the signs in memory of his father, John F. “Jack” Meehan, Sr. ’38, a member of La Salle’s Hall of Fame and a true La Salle Gentleman.

The signs serve as a reminder and challenge to the student body.

Over the years, we have all heard the age-old-adage at one point or another: “Boys will be boys, but La Salle boys will be gentlemen.” But what does this statement really mean?

What is it that makes La Salle boys gentlemen?

The answer is not uncomplicated. The community of La Salle is held to a higher standard, starting as freshmen, continued for a lifetime. The higher standard is not only maintained in the classroom; rather, the merit of a true Explorer is sustained in his ability to help others. La Salle men confer their dedication and spirit to others through many outlets and functions, activating their mission and bringing to life what they’ve acquired from the benefit of a La Salle education. This is what makes our community so unique. A true Lasallian brings the words of the prophet Luke to life, “Unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.”

Our responsibilities are certainly substantial, but it is these responsibilities that bring us all together and mold us into one distinctive faction, the gentlemen of La Salle. The exceptional nature and manner of the men of La Salle is derived from a commitment to excel. The challenge to excel is presented to the young men of La Salle from the start, a challenge that carries on well after their tenure at the high school level is complete.

It is the ingrained aspiration for excellence that separates the men of La Salle, it’s what makes our tradition all it has been and all it will continue to be. We are taught never to be satisfied and to always strive for perfection, for although perfection is impossible, excellence is very much an attainable goal.

It is not by good luck or fortune that La Salle is able to develop the young men of today into the gentlemen of the future, and it is not an obligation looked upon lightly. Any school can make the claim that they produce the best and the brightest, but La Salle lives this through hardwork and dedication to its mission. There is no such impressive a pride as Explorer Pride, and this trait is undoubtedly the result of the gratitude and loyalty we all feel as gentlemen of La Salle to the Gold and Blue.

I­n September of 1956, I stepped off the “26” bus at 20th Street and Olney Avenue and walked towards La Salle College High School. I was not sure where to go, but I encountered a Brother who was kind and patient with me. He directed me to the auditorium. It was here that I met my first homeroom teacher, Brother Gabriel.

Brother Gabriel was the first Brother who introduced the concept of “Brother’s Boy”. He told our homeroom that a “Brother’s Boy” is always a gentleman; he is always respectful, because he represents his family and his school.

I finished my freshman year, and over time I slowly began to understand what Brother Gabriel meant. My homeroom teachers over the final three years, Brother James, Brother Claude, and Brother Gregory all reinforced the concept of “Brother’s Boy”. They taught me that hard work, dedication and loyalty were all important to making a complete La Salle Student.

I was fortunate to continue my association with the Brothers.

I went to La Salle College and then on to West Catholic (a Brother’s school) where I began my teaching career. It was a comfort to me when I walked into a Brother’s school and experienced the same concepts being taught to the young men at West Catholic. After West Catholic, I came to La Salle.

I was back at home.

For the past 38 years I have tried to influence young men by being respectful and remembering that a “Brother’s Boy is always a gentleman. As I told the freshman class this year, we have something in common – We are all “Brother’s Boys”.

I’m proud to belong to this wonderful fraternity. I will always remember – “Boys will be boys, but La Salle Boys will be gentleman.”

William Knecht ’47:

Golden Explorer Hall of Famer

William Knecht ’47, a Philadelphia rowing legend, began his rowing career at La Salle College High School under the eye of Coach John B. Kelly, Sr. Kelly had a fondness for Knecht who was one of Vesper Boat Club’s promising young stars.

Knecht was a national champion in the single in both his junior and senior years at La Salle; victories that proved to be only the beginning.

After graduating La Salle in 1947, Bill went on to study at Villanova University and continued to train at Vesper B.C. He quickly rose to elite status and as a young man stroked Vesper’s eight to victory at the 1954 Pan-American Games. Eventually, Knecht would become John B. Kelly, Jr.’s training partner and would battle daily with him in the singles. Kelly and Knecht eventually joined forces and rowed the men’s double for the United States in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. Unfortunately, they had to withdraw from competition due to sudden illness.

Kelly and Knecht continued to train in the double and were victorious together at the 1959 Pan-Am Games. Knecht also won in the men’s double at the 1963 Pan-Am Games for Vesper B.C., which became the third of three consecutive Pan-Am victories.

Knecht’s greatest accomplishment as an oarsman is his victory in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Bill sat in seven seat of the Vesper eight that represented the United States. The Germans, who took the silver medal in the race, were over one and onequarter boat lengths behind the Americans. The United States was not victorious in the men’s eight again until 2004, forty years later. Because of his victory at the 1964 Olympics, Knecht was inducted into the Rowing Hall of Fame in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, in 1965. Bill still remains as the only La Salle College High School alumnus to have won a gold medal at ­the Olympics.

Although Knecht retired from competitive rowing after the 1964 Olympics, he continued to be a large presence in the sport of rowing. He served on the boards of numerous rowing associations and was the American delegate to FISA, the international governing body of rowing. Knecht was also instrumental in the development of the Cooper River race course, which is host to scholastic and collegiate championship regattas.

Because of his lifetime of support of rowing, Bill has been the recipient of several prestigious awards. In 1973, Knecht was awarded the John J. Carlin Award, which is given by the United States Rowing Association’s Board of Directors

for commitment to the sport. The award has had only sixteen recipients in the past thirty years. Knecht was awarded the Jack Franklin Award in 1993, which is given by the USRA’s Referee Commission for lifetime contributions to rowing. Finally, Villanova University, Knecht’s alma mater, hosts a memorial regatta in Bill’s name. The regatta draws over a thousand collegiate athletes each April and the Knecht Cup is awarded to the winner in the men’s eight event.

Knecht was as successful in business as he was in racing.

While the Kellys were known for brickwork, Knecht was known for sheet metal. Bill owned and operated a million dollar sheet metal contracting business. He also served as president of the Sheet Metal Workers Union. Being the father of eight, Bill was able to balance his commitments to work, rowing, and family. He was known to enjoy the simpler things such as wine and vanilla ice cream after a long day of work.

In his book, All Together, Bill Stowe, stroke seat of the ’64 Vesper eight, writes, “It was impossible to dislike Bill Knecht.

He was simply a very good man as we measured him. He was the senior man and we all respected him greatly” (p.18).

Bill succumbed to cancer at an early age and was interred with his Olympic medal around his neck. Bill Knecht is the first La Salle College High School alumnus to win an Olympic gold medal and will be inducted posthumously into the Alumni Hall of Fame during the Golden Explorers Luncheon, which will take place on October 5, 2005. The induction will celebrate Bill Knecht, a true Golden Explorer.

Letter from the President Dear Alums and Friends of La Salle, Once again you have been amazingly supportive of La Salle and its efforts to provide both an affordable and quality education for the more than 1000 young men who call this their school. As you can imagine without your generous support much of what is provided would not be available to our students. For this the administration, faculty and students of La Salle Thank You! Since arriving at La Salle it has been my pleasure to investigate and discover all the good that is here. From technologically advanced classrooms to excellent athletic facilities our young men are afforded the opportunity to excel at their God-given abilities.

I am very pleased that our staff also benefits from your support through programs of continuing education and excellent classroom technology.

I point with pride to two programs that have been nationally recognized in recent months. Our outstanding music program with almost 40% of the students participating is the envy of many schools. Under the leadership of Mr. Joe Ciccimaro ’57, this program has grown from band to a many-phased music program. Our Jazz Band under the leadership of Mr. Joe Vettori has traditionally been recognized as one of the best in the Delaware V­alley. One of the best elements of this program is its flexibility by incorporating the talents of many students who also play key roles in our sports, theater and activity programs.

Our nationally recognized Community TechServe Program benefits not only our students but also other students. This summer our boys traveled to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn, NY, De La Salle In Towne, La Salle Academy, and Young Scholars Charter School in Philadelphia to help wire and enhance computer services to these schools. It is a great example of kids helping other kids. Also the sense of pride among our students as a result of this national recognition only enhances interest in similar programming for future years. I am especially proud of Jim Edelen ’01 who returned to La Salle this summer to offer our Lab students his expertise in Microsoft network maintenance and management. These programs are directed by Mrs. Gerri Light, Mr. Ray Shay ’00, and Mr. Peter Sigmund ’85.

As your new president, I congratulate you on making possible so much of these advances for La Salle. You can join me in celebrating all that La Salle has become. I thank you for your past support and I need your continued help to build an even greater legacy for the future.

New Members of the Board of Trustees 2005 – 2006 Brother Tim Ahern, FSC is a 1966 graduate of West Catholic High School for Boys. He entered the Noviatiate of the Christian Brothers on June 15, 1966. He has taught Social Studies and Religion at West Catholic Boys High and La Salle. He has a B.A. in History from La Salle University and an M.A. in United States History from the University of Notre Dame. He is currently the President at West Catholic High School.

Joseph H. Donahue ’58 has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Villanova University. He has worked as a Vice President of Program Management at Smithkline Beecham. He was also a plant manager at Merk & Co., Inc. He was the business manager for St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen, NJ. He is now retired and serves on the Parish Financial Council.

Joseph Ragg, Jr. ’73 graduated from the University of Delaware in 1977 with a B.S. in Accounting. He became a CPA in 1981. From 1988 to 1996, he was a member of the Academic Advisory Council for the Accounting Department of the University of Delaware. He is currently Managing Partner at the accounting firm of PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He is married with three children and his interests include the arts, theatre, golf and running.

Joel M. Ziff graduated from West Catholic High School in 1950. He received a B.S. in Accounting from St. Joseph’s University. He was ordained a Permanent Deacon at St. Charles Seminary in 1990. He served as a pilot in the United States Air Force. He has been a member of the Financial Committees of many local institutions.

1940’s

Charles Ansel ’41 has been employed as an Airline Operations Agent for the past sixty-four years. His grandsons David ’07 and Ryan ’09 are continuing the legacy at LSCHS. Francis Schanne ’42 is celebrating 60 years of marriage with his wife Elizabeth on November 10, 2005.

Robert Deevey, Sr. ’45 survived Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis.

He is now researching retirement communities.

Joseph O’Callaghan ’46 has a book “The O’Callaghan Family of County Cork“ being published by Irish Family Names.

James Fallon ’47 is the Secretary of Fort Dix’s Retirement Council. He is also Treasurer of the Armed Forces E9 Association.

Rev. Francis E. Kelly ’47 just celebrated his fiftieth year as a priest.

Ed Bernier ’49 celebrated his 50th Wedding Anniversary on April 30, 2005.

Joseph O’Neill ’49 moved to Janney Montgomery Scott from UBS PaineWebber. His son, Sean ’79 has also joined the firm.

Kent Garson ’54 is now fully retired from Curtis-Wright Corporation. He still does some corporate real estate consulting.

Walter Kaminski ’62 is celebrating his 15th season as the announcer for Explorers’ football and basketball games.

Thomas O’Keefe ’63 is a Professor at Bucks County Community College. He was awarded the “Excellence in Teaching” Award for 2005 by the Bucks County Community College Alumni Association.

Sean McGroarty ’65 has left the acting business and gone back into TV news in Beaumont, TX. He is an anchor and reporter at KBMT-TV, an ABC affiliate.

Brother Robert R. Wilsbach, FSC ’65 completed 10 years at Lewis University Library. He has been a part of three choirs as a baritone.

Paul Partyka ’66 is now serving as President of the Notre Dame Club of Greater Orlando, President of Notre Dame’s Class of 1970, and Democratic Committeeman in Seminole County, FL. Thomas Baldino, PhD ’67 spent half of the 2005 – 06 academic year as a visiting scholar with the Legislative Office for Research Liaison, the non-partisan research center for the Pennsylvania Legislature.

Richard A. Kurowski ’67 is the owner of Primavera Landscape Services Inc. Martin P. Silvestri ’67 reports that his daughter Shana was married to Eric Frost in Positano, Italy this past May. Marshall Breedlove ’68 is studying the bass guitar and visiting his children in Las Vegas

1970’s

Robert Riethmiller, Jr. ’55 was awarded with “Man of the Year” by Waste Equipment Technology Association. He was also elected to the Board of Trustees for the Environmental Research and Education Foundation.

Domenic J. Diclerico ’71 sold his business, Arthur’s Check Cashing Service in August 2004. His son Mario ’99 is entering his third year in law school. His son Gabriel ’01 graduated from the Wharton School in May 2005.

Francis Ponti, PhD ’56 is now working as a statistical consultant on Homeland Security issues with several federal government agencies. He continues to teach statistics at George Washington University.

Dennis Nolen ’71 recently completed Warrington Greene, a fifty-thousand square foot office park and retail center located in Bucks County, Pa.

John Becker ’57 reports that his grandson Christopher is a member of the freshman class at LSCHS. John Convey PhD ’58 has been appointed to a 3-year term as a consulter to the Education Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Joseph Leone ’58 just celebrated his 47th year of marriage to his wife Nancy. Joe is retired and spending his time golfing and tending to his grandchildren.

Edward Miller, PhD ’58 continues to lead the seminar at the annual convention of The Catholic Theological Society of America on the thoughts of John Henry Cardinal Newman.

Thomas Quinlan, Jr. ’59 earned a Doctor of Business Administration from St. Ambrose University in May 2005.

Patrick Cronin ’59 married Dr. Amber Kinser. His two sons James and Charlie graduated from East Tennessee University magna cum laude. Patrick is now head of New Honors College Arts Division at East Tennessee University.

Francis Wenzel, Jr. ’71, along with his wife Joann, adopted two of their foster children, Michael Francis and Siobhan Devine. They have two other foster children, two adopted teenagers and two adult children.

Sean Colgan ’73 just moved to Steamboat Springs, CO. John E. Kane ’75 is the Vice President of Investments at RBC DAIN. Thomas Belcher ’75 reports that is his son, Paul, will be a part of La Salle’s Class of 2009 Christian Crane, Jr. ’77 has recently moved to Horsham, PA.­­­ He is the President of Recruittech International.

Martin Malloy ’77 earned a Master of Public Administration Degree from Marist College in May 2004.

Jules Riehs, Jr. ’81 is completing a doctorate program at Immaculata University.

Terrence Fallon ’98 is employed by the U.S. Department of Commerce as an economist at the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

He is working towards a Masters Degree in Economics at Johns Hopkins University, and is currently residing in Alexandria, VA.

Joseph Dowling, Jr. ’82 has a private psychological practice in Bryn Mawr, PA.

Mark Szczech ’98, is the Senior Program Director at the Roxborough YMCA.

William O’Brien III ’83 is celebrating 10 years of private practice. He operates five family practice offices in Newtown, Bristol, Bensalem, Bustleton, and South Philadelphia.

Lt. Scott T. Miller ’99 received his pilot’s wings and was promoted to Lieutenant in May 2005. He flies a CH-60 helicopter.

Michael Pavlick, Esq. ’83 is a partner in the Pittsburgh office of Kirkpatrick Lockhart Nicholson & Graham. He and his wife Kim have two children, Meghan and Veronica.

Jeremy Cooke ’99, recently started work as a copy editor for The Bond Buyer. He lives and works in the Financial District of Manhattan.

Lt. Col. Matt Anderer, USAF ’84 served in Afghanistan and Iraq, where he was awarded two Bronze Stars. Matt is currently Operations Officer of the First Airlift Squadron at Andrews AFB, flying Air Force Two (Chaney, Rumsfeld, Rice, etc). He lives with his wife Cathy and two children Sean and Kelly in Springfield, VA.

Mathew Schaffer ’99 recently returned from Japan. He will be working as a programmer for Comcast.

Joseph Irwin, MD ’86 was elected Chairman of the Department of Family Practice at Ephrata Community Hospital.

Jeffrey Beck ’86, announces that his company, PhillyUnions.com is about to launch its Union-Yes certification and marketing program, Pro Union VIP Partners. Jeff also works as an audio engineer with Popular Sounds Productions.

Mike Sharkey ’86 is now a Detective in the Marple Township Police Department.

Jim Stabilito ’87 accepted a position as an Assistant Vice President with Willis North America in January 2005.

1990’s

Lt. Commander Robert Everling ’92 is a Naval Operations Officer on Commodore’s Staff aboard the USS Harry S. Truman.

He married Jennifer R. Rosenthal on September 4, 2004. He is a graduate of George Washington University with a MA in Organizational Management. The couple lives in Norfolk, VA. Brian Griffith ’92 was a founding member of CCV Restructuring, which offers bankruptcy turn-around consultation.

Brian married his wife Kimberly Arcoro in 1999 and has two children, Emma and Benjamin.

Brian Matthews ’94 just celebrated the sacrament of marriage in Rhode Island. He is currently serving youth in Providence at the MET Justice School.

Michael Wimmer ’94 has been teaching at Colonial Elementary school for the past seven years. He lives in East Norriton with his wife Stephanie and his son, Michael Jr. Michael Witkowski ’94 has passed his professional engineering exam. He also has an adjunct teaching position at Villanova University David Boelker ’95 married Erin Burke on September 4, 2005 in Wayne, PA. They spent their honeymoon in London and Dublin.

Adam E. Frey ’96 and his wife Christina now reside in Melbourne, FL.

Joseph Steffa III ’99 is a 2003 cum laude graduate of Harvard University. He is living in Manhattan, NY. He is working for Bear Stearns as a vice president/agency adjustable rate mortgages trader on Wall Street.

Stephen Paul Kettinger ’00 spent three years as the Villanova “Wildcat”. He continues his mascotting career as “Mad Dog” for the Philadelphia Wings. He hopes to someday reach his goal of becoming the Phillie Phanatic, but until then he will keep his day job of Facilities Project Engineer for Johnson Controls, Inc. at Merck. ­­­­­ John Paul Prego ’00 joined the staff of R&B, Inc., Colmar, PA after his graduation from Wilkes University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Michael Bondiskey ’01 recently began studies at Vanderbilt University Law School.

William Parker ’01 graduated from Loyola University in Baltimore. He is now working for Sun America Financial Services and living in Burbank, CA. Brendan Rueter ’01 graduated from Fairfield University in May 2005. He is employed with Deloitte and Touche.

Michael Steffa ’01 graduated cum laude from Carnegie Mellon University. He is presently living in Manhattan, NY. He is working for BNP Paribas as a trading analyst in short term investments.

Sean Ahern ’02 recently participated in the 123rd Royal Canadian Henley Regatta with Penn AC. He is in his third year of varsity rowing at La Salle University.

Timothy Catinella ’03 became a U.S. Marine as of March 2005.

He left for training in South Korea on August 12, 2005.

William Benz ’04 is studying film at Temple University.

He was on the Dean’s List both semesters of his freshman year.

He is in a band called Explosive Bears and they are playing shows in and around Philadelphia.

Anthony Limberakis ’05 assisted in the transformation of Bustleton Radiology into a digital filmless radiology practice. He is attending Drexel University and majoring in Information Technology.

The Children’s Champion

This past spring the Class of ’75 held its 30-Year reunion which reawakened friendships and allowed us to catch up on the careers of our fellow classmates. All of us were proud and touched to learn about the efforts of Frank Cervone. As Executive Director of Philadelphia’s Support Center for Child Advocates, Frank Cervone, MA, Esq. ’75 plays a vital role in the more than 700 pro bono cases handled by Child Advocates annually. Child Advocates combines skilled social workers and staff attorneys with volunteer attorneys and paralegals to represent abused and neglected children in the Philadelphia court and social service system.

Frank’s motivations for a career in child advocacy are deeply rooted in a lifelong passion for community service, recognition of a civic need, and a willingness to step forward and lead. Much of his time these days is devoted to awakening a similar consciousness for civic duty in other leaders—attorneys and business professionals—to attract their valuable talent and needed support.

Among his many responsibilities at Child Advocates, Frank and his colleagues recruit, train and supervise volunteer attorneys—more than 3,000 attorneys since assuming leadership of the program in 1992. Frank also helped to launch the Montgomery County Child Advocacy Project (MCAP), promote the creation of internal pro bono programs within law firms across the city, and coordinate the National Children’s Law Network, a support resource for public and private child advocacy programs nationwide.

“Child advocacy cases provide an opportunity to utilize a wide range of skills possessed by all attorneys, whether their practices involve litigation or are transactional in nature,” wrote Frank in a recent article published in The Legal Intelligencer.

Indeed, volunteer attorneys from many practice areas, including intellectual property, real estate, business and finance, and litigation quickly acclimate and make valuable contributions to child advocacy case loads, donating two to 10 hours per month.

Volunteer attorneys do not have to be litigators. “Much of our work at Child Advocates is convincing someone to do something—what attorneys and successful businesspeople already do,” explains Frank, noting that Lee Schwartzberg is a business attorney.

He emphasizes how his finely tuned moral compass found its direction at La Salle College High School. “The Christian Brothers’ historical mission and commitment to put themselves in the presence of the poor always appealed to me,” says Frank.

He participated in the Community Service Corps at La Salle.

Those experiences “taught us that there are needs beyond our own,” says Frank.

Through Joe Colistra at La Salle, Frank developed an interest in American History, which became his major at Penn.

He graduated cum laude with an American History Honors Award. Frank went on to earn his law degree and the Wenk Community Legal Services Award at Villanova University School of Law. Throughout his higher education, Frank remained connected and very much interested in the work of the Christian Brothers Community. Upon his graduation from La Salle High, Brothers Gene Graham and Lewis Mullen invited Frank into the Community’s Aspiring Program. Six years later, in 1981, he received the Habit of the Brothers and moved into Community at Jeremy House in Mt. Airy. His ministry focused mostly on service to juvenile offenders in the Saint Gabriel’s System.

Frank left the Christian Brothers in 1989 and applied his Christian Brothers values to legal services advocacy. Positions with the Delaware County Legal Assistance Association and as Adjunct Clinical Professor at Villanova University School of Law preceded his now 15-year tenure at Child Advocates.

Frank’s many professional affiliations, publications on advocacy topics, and litany of awards, including 2004 and 2005 Super Lawyer recognition by Philadelphia Magazine, only begin to reveal his secular fulfillment of the Christian Brothers mission.

“I loved life as a Brother,” reflects Frank. “I respect that experience and continue to stay in touch with the Community.

The La Salle College High School community bid farewell to a dedicated and long-time employee on August 18, 2005.

Mrs. Patricia “Pat” Dever was honored at a retirement luncheon in Alumni House where she served as Data Manager for the past twenty-three years. Pat’s service to the Alumni Association and Development Office has been a vital part of numerous annual appeals and two successful capital campaigns. Her expertise has provided the information necessary to support nearly every event La Salle has held in those twenty-three years. The entire La Salle community wishes Pat good health and best wishes in her future endeavors.
