LET US REMEMBER LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear La Salle Family, Sitting down today to write the cover letter for the annual Explorer, I must admit to feeling a little less than at the top of my game. It was only about 40 hours ago, you see, that the third of three planes bringing me back to Philadelphia from Sydney landed. As always, the experience was well worth the momentary inconvenience of jet lag.

For only the second time of the eight I have been fortunate enough to cross this continent and the South Pacific disembarking Down Under, La Salle students were sharing the experience.

After the celebrations of graduation and grandparents’ day were complete, I arrived in Sydney a day before the boys, Mr. Fox, and Mr. Fyke came in from Singapore, their first stop.

One evening I was making my way from my slightly more restorative and forgiving accommodation to the youth hostel where the Explorers were staying, three quick stops away by light rail. This conveyance was packed that evening with rush hour commuters. A stop after I got on, someone I typically would describe as a “little old lady,” cane in hand, stepped into the tram. A sharp-eyed millennial Australian girl was looking out for her, and pointed towards a discovery, “There’s a seat over there; would you like it?” The venerable woman looked at me first, and softly suggested, “Maybe this gentleman would.” I was, of course, a gentleman and deferred, gesturing to the seat with the words, “Please, Dear,” probably calling her something else entirely under my breath.

Perspective. It can be jarring when acquired perforce. While I still see myself as the fit and intrepid young(-ish) traveler that first walked briskly up George Street in 1994, decades before the light rail was installed, this lovely lady clearly saw me as a peer. At best.

Perspective. It’s one thing travel can give you.

One of the pleasures of this particular trip was to watch the boys adjust: to looking right-leftright before crossing the street; to the familiar fast food place with the crown logo being called Hungry Jacks; to the respect offered to the man whose title that establishment includes in its American avatar, our group just missing the three day weekend offered in June for celebrating his birthday (despite the fact that it’s actually in November, as his mother’s was in April).

The students themselves particularly enjoyed their encounters with their Lasallian peers, coming away with perspectives on the “maths” curriculum which teaches a little algebra, geometry, stats, and trig each year, complexity deepening, rather than offering distinct courses in each subject, as well as on sport (no “s” over

THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF LA SALLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL 2024-2025 there). They discovered, for example, that the only kind of hockey extant is a field sport, and yes, boys play it unabashedly. Other perspectives were socio-cultural: “Gee, Australians really use a lot of foul language.” One thing they didn’t get was the irony in my deadpan suggestion, “Those must be New Zealanders you’re overhearing. You just can’t distinguish the accents.”

The whole purpose of the “broad and balanced” education this issue of the Explorer celebrates is to provide similar perspective to our students today. The well-rounded education on offer here at La Salle is meant to expose students to diverse perspectives and to encourage them to develop their own. Knowing what others have thought – the intellectual tradition – is most helpful when it allows you to ground your own viewpoint in reasoned arguments. Even more significant in the contemporary world, artificial intelligence is of great value as an information gatherer and time-saver in research or communication. It’s detrimental if its findings aren’t approached with an active critical imagination used to form one’s own position.

The perspective that results from a broad and balanced education is of clear value, but that worth is further enhanced by what perspective ideally creates: connections. These connections can be between ideas, allowing students to understand that both nativism and populism are recurring motifs in the American story, hardly a moment unique to the 2020s. These connections can be in applications, students in the engineering concentration coming to appreciate that the physics and calculus they confront and master is more than an academic exercise. Both are real-world problem solving tools that makes life better for ordinary people. Not to be overlooked is the value of connections to people who are not exactly like me. Unlike the local public high school or even the more regional archdiocesan institution, La Salle draws students from all five counties in the metropolitan area, with occasional leaven thrown in from the Lehigh Valley and New Jersey. Mention a kid is from Saint Patrick’s, and you really don’t know if that’s Center City, Norristown, Malvern, or even Kennett Square. The trajectories which lead each such student to this sacred mixing bowl enrich the experience and understanding of all.

The perspectives engendered by a “broad and balanced education” can lead us to question, lead us to skepticism, but that’s only a step along the way. For at La Salle, we are mindful that this education, as defined by our mission statement, is not simply broad and balanced. The next three words are “human and Christian.” The 1718 Rule of the Brothers, written while de La Salle was still living, reminds us: “The spirit of this Institute is first, a spirit of faith, which should induce those who compose it not to look upon anything but with the eyes of faith, not to do anything but in view of God, and to attribute all to God.” So it is that this Lasallian educational venture ultimately and inevitably focuses us on Him who said, “I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.”

As you read this Explorer, I hope you will find many examples of how this promise is fulfilled for the young men entrusted to our care by the work we do, this Mission in which we all share.

LA SALLE OPENS DOORS FOR 166 TIME WELCOMES THE CLASS OF 2028 TH

AUGUST 20-21, 2024

La Salle College High School opened its doors on August 20, 2024, for the start of the school’s 166th academic year.

Over 300 boys from local middle and elementary schools were welcomed to the Class of 2028 by the faculty, staff, and administration with various orientation activities. The students were greeted at the entrance of the school by Brother James Butler, FSC, Principal James Fyke, senior members of the Student Council, the Explorer, and the sounds of the La Salle Pep Band. As part of the freshman class ritual, each young man received a class tie and participated in a ceremony for the planting of their class tree.

BROAD and Balanced LA SALLE ADDS NEW CONCENTRATION IN LEADERSHIP, PUBLIC SERVICE, AND LAW

In 2023, La Salle College High School launched a Concentrations Program which took learning to another level and allowed students to embark on innovative journeys where they can experience various career fields and earn credentials during their high school years. By navigating a pathway through elective classes, clubs, and experiential learning activities as well as linked course content, interviews, service-learning opportunities, and independent research, La Salle students gain unparalleled academic and real-world insights. These customized pathways enable students to discover and pursue their passions. As a result, connections are made across subject areas, and deeper more meaningful learning takes place.

In addition to concentrations in Digital Media and Communication, Engineering, Global Business, Health Sciences, IT Professional, and Music Production, a concentration in Leadership, Public Service, and Law is available to students in 2025 who have a desire to promote the common good and gain the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundation needed to effect meaningful change in society. This concentration fosters teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, and an understanding of law, governance, justice, and community engagement.

Leadership is the cornerstone of progress, empowering students to navigate complex challenges, inspire others, and develop effective programs. By studying leadership theories, decision-making strategies, and organizational dynamics, students develop the confidence and strategic

mindset to lead in government, nonprofit organizations, and the private sector. Public service focuses on civic engagement, policy analysis, and service at the local, state, federal, and international level. Whether working in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or grassroots movements, graduates of this program will be equipped to craft and implement policies that improve lives and promote justice. Law provides the framework for justice and order, ensuring that societies operate within ethical and legal parameters. By studying legal principles, constitutional law, and regulatory policies, students gain a foundation for careers in law, criminal justice, and human rights advocacy.

Understanding the law enhances students’ ability to protect civil liberties and contribute to a just society.

Students will gain practical experience by attending hands-on workshops, taking part in mentoring programs, and developing student-led initiatives. This concentration prepares students for impactful careers in law, politics, government, and nonprofit sectors. It is ideal for those who aspire to lead with integrity, serve the public good, and shape the future through action, law, and policy.

GOLF The Golf Team began the season by winning the Happy Valley Invitational on the White Course at Penn State University and were undefeated in league play. Senior Chris Vahey fired a 2-under par round of 68 at Jeffersonville Golf Club to win the individual championship and lead the team to their 22nd Philadelphia Catholic League Championship since 2000. The following week, they captured their 8th consecutive District 12 (City) Championship at Philmont Country Club and defeated Southern Lehigh, the District 11 champions, to advance to the Pennsylvania State Championship for the 8th time in nine years.

CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country Team consists of over 65 student-athletes and is one of Coach Greg Bielecki’s deepest and most talented teams in recent years.

The Varsity, JV, and Freshman teams all placed first at the Philadelphia Catholic League Championships. The Varsity team went on to win the District 12 (City) Championship and finish second at the PIAA State Championship, losing to North Allegheny, which had two of the top three racers. They competed as a team in the NXN Regional meet at Bowdoin Park in November with teams from around the tri-state area.

SOCCER The Soccer Team got off to a strong start that included four double overtime wins. The Explorers were battled tested and captured the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship for the second consecutive year.

Unfortunately, they lost 2-1 to Northeast High School in the District 12 (City) Championship.

FOOTBALL Under the direction of first-year head coach Brett Gordon ’98, the Football Team finished the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record and were ranked as the No. 1 team in the state of Pennsylvania for most of the season. The Explorers captured the Philadelphia Catholic League Red Division Championship; however, they fell to Saint Joseph’s Prep in the 6A championship game by a score of 21-14, ending their season at 10-1.

RUGBY 7s The Rugby 7s Program played several showcase events, most recently in Reading, and got off to a great start. The program continues to have great student interest, with over 75 guys on the roster. The Explorers lost in the finals of the Rugby PA State Tournament to Berks County and earned second place in the state after another strong season.

WATER POLO The Water Polo Team got off to a great start. They played well in several big tournaments, including the Beast of the East, and earned the No. 1 seed in the Pennsylvania State Water Polo Tournament, where they won the opening round game over Reading 22-13, but fell to North Allegheny in the semifinals. They rallied to defeat Wilson the following day to secure a third-place finish in the state.

The Class of 2025 participated in the school’s annual College Interview Day on October 1, 2024. Held in the Charles “Obie” O’Brien Gymnasium, 60 representatives from nearly 50 colleges and universities attended the event. Seniors were scheduled for individual appointments with the colleges of their choice. In the exchange, seniors presented their transcripts, had the opportunity to provide additional personal information, and ask questions about the school.

FRESHMAN BRANCH-OUT DAY OCTOBER 21, 2024

On October 21, 2024, the freshman class (Class of 2028) participated in Freshman Branch-Out Day. Over 300 students, along with almost 200 of their fathers and 35 members of the faculty/staff, performed service at over 20 different underserved sites in the Philadelphia area. This year marked the 21st time that the freshman class at La Salle College High School has “branched out” and over 2,000 hours of service was provided to the community. The day concluded with a prayer service and discussion about the integral role that community service plays in the Lasallian mission.

NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT (NLI) SIGNING DAY NOVEMBER 13, 2024

Held in the Whalen Courtyard on November 13, 2024, the first NLI Signing Day of the 2023-2024 academic year featured 16 student-athletes who will be competing in five sports at 14 different colleges/universities.

DECEMBER 4 AND 10, 2024 The Music Department at La Salle College High School performed its annual Christmas Concert on December 4, 2024. The concert featured over 250 musicians in eight different ensembles, performing 16 numbers. The Choral Program, under the direction of Mr. Mark Norman and comprised of over 60 singers, treated attendees to 14 arrangements at a concert on December 10, 2024.

SIX EXPLORERS STUDYING FOR THE PRIESTHOOD

Countless alumni of La Salle College High School have entered religious life. Many have become Christian Brothers, while others have entered the priesthood. Sean Toolan, SJ ’00 was the last alumnus to be ordained and, in recent years, Steve Javie ’72, John Mischler ’82, and other alumni have become deacons and are actively contributing to parish life.

Lately, “Leave to Serve” has taken on a deeper meaning as there are currently four alumni studying for the priesthood at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, which recently relocated from City Avenue in Wynnewood to a smaller campus adjacent to Gwynedd Mercy University in Ambler.

Dorian Kernytsky ’03 is in PreTheology II and studying for the Eastern Rite. Jeremy Puntel ’15 is in Theology I and Matthew Pace ’03 is in Theology II. Last spring, Thomas Cipolla ’17 was ordained a Transitional Deacon and assigned to Saint Theresa of Calcutta Parish in Limerick, PA. In May of 2026, he will become the 92nd alumnus of La Salle College School to be ordained a priest since the late 1930s.

In addition to the four seminarians studying at Saint Charles Borromeo, two other alumni are studying to become priests in a religious order.

Clint Ormsby ’15 is at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, NE studying for the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter.

Chris Czyzewski ’16 is a Capuchin Postulate for the Capuchin Franciscan Province of Saint Joseph.

While there has been a steady decline in vocations among young men, the recent surge among La Salle alumni is a testament to presence of religious life at the school – between the nine Christian Brothers living in community at La Salle and the number of priests who visit the campus for prayer services, to celebrate Mass, and to hear confessions.

Hopefully, the trend will continue as more graduates will answer the call to serve the Church.

The award recognizes significant professional or volunteer service to the school rendered over a substantial period of the awardee’s life; service that mirrors the generosity of Christian Brothers serving students at La Salle College High School since 1858.

Established in an effort to recognize the dedicated and consistent service of alumni to La Salle College High School. The award is presented in memory of William J. Whelan ’55, a man of both kindness and principle, who was a loyal son of La Salle. Bill was our friend and teacher, and the identification of this award to his life reflects the true spirit of his service to La Salle College High School and its alumni.

John Fenningham is a member of the Bars of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and is currently the Managing Partner of Fenningham, Dempster & Coval, LLP. He was a member of the Alumni Board at La Salle College High School and President of the Alumni Association in 2001-2002.

He served on the Board of Trustees of La Salle College High School from 2002 to 2006. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of La Salle Academy in Philadelphia, where he served as Chairman. He served on the Board of Directors at Mount Saint Joseph Academy as well as a Member and Chairman of the Northampton Township Zoning Hearing Board.

He was a member of the Board of Directors at Saint Mary Hospital in Bucks County and served as Chairman. He is a proud member of La Salle’s Football team, where he wore No. 24 and was known as “Feather.”

Brother Robert Schaefer, FSC has a B.A. in Communication and English from La Salle University along with a M.A. in Theology. He later earned a M.A. in Catholic School Administration from Seton Hall University. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees at La Salle University and as Director of Vocations for the Baltimore District of the Christian Brothers. In 2021, he was elected as the Provincial/ Visitor for the Lasallian District of Eastern North America (DENA), where he directs the efforts of almost 200 Christian Brothers on the East Coast. For five years, he resided at the Chrisitan Brothers Generalate in Rome and served as the Secretary of Formation for the International Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Earlier in his career, he was a faculty member at SetonLa Salle High School in Pittsburgh, PA and Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland, MD, as well as campus minister and assistant principal for student affairs at Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, where he served as principal from 2009–2016, serving as CEO of the school during the second half of that tenure. He attended the 45th and 46th General Chapters for the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Schools in Rome.

John Leonard is a roboticist and Professor of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A member of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), he is a researcher in simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), particularly for autonomous underwater vehicles. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a D.Phil. in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford. He spent five years as a postdoctoral fellow and Research Scientist in the MIT Sea Grant Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Laboratory. He has served as an associate editor of the IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering and of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation. He received the National Science Foundation Career Award, an E.T.S. Walton Visitor Award from Science Foundation Ireland, and the King-Sun Fu Memorial Best IEEE Transactions on Robotics Paper Award.

ARTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION MARCH 30, 2025

Presented to individuals who have brought distinction to La Salle College High School through their talents as demonstrated in Theater/Performing Arts, Speech and Debate, and Music. They exemplify the characteristics of living the Lasallian mission including leadership, service, and commitment to the community. A current student, Jason Jiang ’25, was recognized with the Brother René Sterner, FSC Award for his excellence in speech and debate, music, and theater.

FATHER MICHAEL TIDD, O.S.B. ’88 Speech and Debate, Inducted 2025 Father Michael Tidd’s professional life has been dedicated to rhetoric and the arts. A member of the Forum while a student at La Salle, Father Michael earned over 1,500 points as a competitor and reached the final round of the National Forensics League Tournament. As a student at the University of Pennsylvania and later as a Brother of the Christian Schools (1990-2003) and a Benedictine Monk (2006-Present), Father Michael coached and judged Speech and Debate locally and nationally. In his coaching career he earned Four Diamond status, three Distinguished Service Awards, and founded the Delbarton School’s Speech and Debate Program. He currently serves as the Headmaster of Delbarton School, an all-boys Catholic school for grades 7-12 operated in the Benedictine tradition.

CHRISTOPHER ’06 AND FRANK DILELLA ’02 Theater, Inducted 2025 Chris and Frank DiLella were stars of the Musical Theater Program at La Salle College High School. Frank played the lead in George M! in 2002 and Chris played the lead in Godspell in 2006. Both graduated from Fordham University and went to careers in New York City. Frank is the 11-time Emmy Award winning host of “On Stage” on Spectrum NY1, where he has become a trusted friend and confidant within the theater and entertainment communities. Chris is a senior producer for CNBC’s special projects unit and has produced numerous stories for primetime TV shows. He is a frequent writer/producer for CNBC.com’s wealth section and CNBC Make It.

DAVID F.X. CIANCI ’86 Music, Inducted 2024 David Cianci was a talented bass trombonist for The Philly Pops and No Name Pops. He attended the University of the Arts and was an active member of the Musicians Union of Philadelphia. Dave returned to his alma mater as the first director of the Competition Band at La Salle College High School. He played piano and trombone professionally and performed in Europe and throughout the United States sharing the stage with legends like Kenny Rogers, Johnny Mathis, Brian Wilson, and Andrea Bocelli. When Dave was not playing music, he used his finance degree from Drexel University as a 26-year senior analyst at The Bank of New York Mellon.

SQUASH The Squash Team began its 9th season and played a hefty 18-match schedule in the MASA league. A total of 30 students participated in the fall clinics, which fielded a varsity team of 13 players. The team ended the season with a record of 6-12; however, ten players will return next season.

WRESTLING The Wrestling Team had a very successful season at both the team and individual level. The Explorers captured both the Philadelphia Catholic League and District 12 (City) Championships, and 9 of the 13 regular varsity starters earned All-Catholic honors. The team represented District 12 at the PIAA Team Championships, hosting the first-ever PIAA State meet at La Salle. The Explorers were defeated by Council Rock North, but nine individuals advanced to the regional level and competed for a spot at the PIAA Individual State Championships at the end of February.

BOWLING The Bowling Team finished third in the Philadelphia Catholic League with a record of 54-18, one game better than last year. They defeated Archbishop Wood 4-0 in the quarterfinals, and, in the best match of the year, the Explorers fell to Father Judge 3105 to 3003 in the semifinals. The team was led by four All-Catholic selections and, as a team, the Explorers bowled ninety-five 200 games, thirty-five 600 series, sixteen 1000 series, and five 3000 series.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD The Indoor Track and Field Team had one of the best seasons in school history. The Explorers defeated Saint Joseph’s Prep 162-91 to capture the Philadelphia Catholic Championship. In addition, the team set five school records: 200m James Mahoney 22.21 (State Qualifier), 3,000m Nolan Yeagle 8:34.16 (State Qualifier), 4x200m Relay - James Mahoney, Kris Chester, Logan Yeagle, and Justin Hawkins 1:29.77 (State Qualifier), 4x400m Relay - Cam Mehallo, James Mahoney, Louie Burdick, and Will Baer 3:20.70 (State Qualifier), and the Distance Medley Relay - Bobby Franklin, Louie Burdick, Cam Mehallo, and Nolan Yeagle 10:09.74 (State Qualifier – No. 2 time in the USA).

SWIMMING AND DIVING The Swimming and Diving Team finished the season undefeated in Philadelphia Catholic League dual meets and won outof-conference meets against Christian Brothers Academy (NJ) and Salesianum (DE). The Explorers finished second at Wilson Relays in January and went on to capture their 37th straight Philadelphia Catholic League Championship and 17th straight District 12 (City) Championship.

They finished second in the PIAA State Championship. Eight swimmers earned All-American Honors for their outstanding performances: Kyle Spaman, Owen Sherry, Joey Curcio, Radek Cohen, Foster Brooke, Hayden Mallory, Gabe Cowart, and Tommy Yaegel.

ICE HOCKEY

Under the direction of second-year coach, Ryan Ansel, the Basketball Program took a step forward as the varsity team doubled its win total in Philadelphia Catholic League play from last year and earned a home playoff game for the first time since 2019. Senior Nick Parisi led the league in scoring and was named a First Team All-Catholic. Joey O’Brien had a breakout season and was a Second Team All-Catholic selection. He was ranked in the Top 10 in Rebounds, Steals, Blocks, Deflections, Assist-to-Turnover Ratio, Turnovers +/-, Field Goal %, Minutes Per Game, and Offensive Rebounds.

The Ice Hockey Program consists of four teams (Varsity AAA, JV AAA, JV A Blue, and JV A Gold) and has 83 student athletes. The Varsity team had an overall record of 15-6 and finished the APAC (Atlantic Prep Athletic Conference) regular season in second place.

They entered the APAC playoffs as the number two seed and defeated Saint Joseph’s Prep 7-0 in the semifinals but lost 6-4 to Holy Ghost Prep in the finals. The Explorers earned the No. 2 seed in the Flyers Cup but lost once again to Holy Ghost Prep in the championship game.

La Salle College High School hosted a Monte Carlo Night for alumni, parents, and friends of the La Salle community. The spirited event was energized by a variety of gaming tables – the winnings from which could be used for a variety of raffle items.

La Salle College High School awarded scholarships to 79 eighth grade boys based on their scores from the Scholarship/ Entrance exam administered in October. On January 9, 2025, those young men along with their parents and favorite teacher/administrator from grade school, attended a dinner in their honor.

The guests were addressed by former scholarship recipients and Owen Helenski ’25 and Jason Jiang ’25 and were hosted at their table by a current senior as well as a member of the faculty/staff.

FATHER/SON BANQUET MARCH 2, 2025

The 75th annual Father/Son Banquet was held on March 2, 2025, at The Fuge in Warminster. The guest speaker was NFL offensive linesman Jimmy Morrissey ’16 and the event was attended by over 500 fathers/sons. The Father/Son Banquet is one of the oldest traditions at La Salle and provides some time for fathers and sons to break routines and spend time with each other.

PROFILES OF ALUMNI CELEBRATING REUNIONS IN 2025

Talented writers at La Salle College High School were previously limited in their ability to showcase and develop their writing skills. The Blue and Gold (yearbook), Wisterian (newspaper), and Gazebo (literary magazine) provided opportunities to be published within the school community, but apart from class assignments and a creative writing course offered sporadically in the curriculum, students with a passion (or even a strong interest) for writing were limited. The new Concentrations Program in Digital Media and Communication offers electives for students who enjoy writing and have an interest in journalism. One course, Introduction to Multimedia Journalism, is a half-credit, one semester elective offered to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. In this course, which meets two of the eight days of the cycle, students learn how to gather information, organize ideas, edit, and format for different forms of news media publications. The course also examines the historical development of journalism and the role of journalism today. Students enrolled in this course are responsible for producing content for the Wisterian, the school’s website, and/or the Wisterian Student eNewsletter.

Mastering the basics of journalism and digital communication, students produce and submit two to four stories per quarter for publication consideration. These publications are “web-first,” so emphasis is placed on digital over print production, emphasizing the ever-changing media landscape. Students in this course also play a pivotal role in La Salle College High School’s overall communication strategy through regularly published work for the La Salle community. The following profiles, featuring alumni celebrating reunions in 2025, were written by Mr. Mark Zimmaro’s journalism class and demonstrate the range of the Concentrations Program.

MAINTAINING ALUMNI TIES MICHAEL A. MAREK ’80

CLASS OF 1980 Mike Marek’s life is a testament to the enduring influence of high school experiences and the importance of giving back. Distinguished as the longest-standing consecutive donor to La Salle College High School, Mike Marek ’80 has demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the school that shaped him. Beyond his generosity, his decision to send his son to La Salle underscores the deep respect and appreciation he holds for the school, its values, and notably, the music department.

“The main thing I was involved in at La Salle was the music department,” said Marek.

Joining as a freshman, he became part of the program’s early days under the leadership of Mr. Ciccimaro ’57, who was “still kind of new” at the time. Marek recalled how the department began to thrive, transforming into a space for creativity and growth. For him, the music department wasn’t just about learning to perform; it became a cornerstone of his high school experience, shaping his identity and creating lifelong friendships.

Marek’s connection to La Salle didn’t end after graduation.

Recognizing the value of the education and opportunities that he received, he became a dedicated supporter of the school’s mission. Marek’s contributions have played a vital role in ensuring that future generations of students can benefit from the same transformative experiences he had.

Speaking about alumni efforts, Marek remarked, “You know, if you fall apart, that’s not good.” His generosity reflects his belief in the power of education and the importance of investing in the community that helped shape him. After high school, Marek attended the University of Pennsylvania and is now a successful financial analyst in the Princeton area, becoming a prominent figure in the financial world.

His commitment to La Salle is further evident in his decision to send his son James ’18, to the school. While Mike allowed James to explore other schools, he found that La Salle had not only maintained the values he remembered but had also grown to offer even more opportunities. Reflecting on his son’s choice, Marek shared that James realized the school was unique in its blend of tradition and advancement. This choice proved fruitful, as James went on to attend Duke

University. And in hindsight, the younger generation of La Salle graduates have already learned to appreciate the benefits of their high school education. Marek noted that whenever he met up with his son and his friends, they would often tell him “how impactful La Salle was and how easy it was transitioning from high school to college.”

Marek also reflected on the importance of alumni connections and fostering a sense of community among graduates. While his own class has struggled to maintain the same level of cohesion as others, Marek praised the Alumni Association’s efforts to strengthen these ties. He highlighted the value of staying connected, noting that relationships and shared history from high school can serve as a foundation for lifelong support and belonging.

“Once again,” he emphasized, “it’s the Alumni Association’s big charge to keep all of the classes getting together.”

A BEACON OF SERVICE JAMES M. HASSON ’85

CLASS OF 1985 "Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve." Although the saying wasn’t officially used until after James Hasson ’85 graduated from La Salle College High School, he said it was still very evident in the mindset of the student body. For the last four years, Hasson has partnered with the school to provide toys to children as part of Secret Santa. Hasson’s efforts combined with the generosity of the La Salle community have been felt by hundreds of families, many of whom struggle to afford gifts for their children around Christmas time. While he was at La Salle, Hasson’s involvement in community outreach helped him develop a strong sense of generosity.

"At La Salle, there is an emphasis on challenging yourself and using the gifts that you have to be the best self you can be," Hasson said.

Thousands of gifts donated to the hospital by La Salle families have been collected, wrapped, and distributed to children at Hasson’s company, Ameriscend. Located in Bucks County, Ameriscend is described as a multifaceted family of companies that offers custom packaging, labeling, marking and coding solutions and differentiates itself by providing personalized interaction, transparency, and decades of experience.

In 2024, Ameriscend hosted Secret Santa, an effort to benefit pediatric oncology and hematology patients at Saint Christopher’s Hospital. The La Salle community provided gifts to more than 125 families with a sick child on Christmas Eve. Hasson’s company provides space where gifts are accumulated and wrapped and are eventually delivered by La Salle volunteers dressed up as Santa and his elves.

"I learned the power of how getting involved and putting yourself out there helps you build connections with the community," Hasson said.

Hasson’s generosity can be credited to the core teachings of La Salle, to give 100 percent of your effort and to become the best version of yourself. Hasson transferred to La Salle in his Junior year of high school after moving to the Philadelphia area from Chicago. His involvement in extracurricular activities was one of the many things he felt helped prepare him for college and for the rest of his life. In his two years at La Salle, Hasson played two sports, was on the student council, did community service, retreats, and more, and embraced every opportunity he had to engage and build connections with the community. He believes his participation in these activities taught him valuable life

skills such as teamwork, leadership, and time management.

He feels that these experiences not only helped him build lasting relationships but also shaped his character.

"Foundationally, the education I got at La Salle prepared me for college and life," Hasson said. "I felt like I was ready for what came next."

Not only are the students at La Salle expected to instill core Lasallian values, but the teachers and faculty are too.

Hasson recalls how personable and friendly his teachers and coaches were at La Salle, they were always willing to offer guidance and encouragement, which made a lasting impact on his personal growth. Brother John D’Alfonso, FSC ’55 and Mr. Bernie McCabe had lasting impacts.

Forty years after graduating, Hasson still fondly looks back on his time at La Salle and how it shaped his life for the better.

"I had a good experience in my two years at La Salle," Hasson said. "And the Brothers had a significant impact on me."

A FAMILY BOND DANIEL E. DIEHL ’85

CLASS OF 1985 The Diehl Family name continues to strengthen its ties with La Salle College High School.

Dan Diehl ’85 is still very active in the community today. Mr. Diehl visits the school frequently to attend alumni events and can often be found in the bleachers at basketball games and other sports events.

Mr. Diehl played basketball and high jumped for the track and field team for four years during his time at La Salle.

When asked about how his time at La Salle shaped him into who he is today, Diehl said La Salle taught him the importance of being a “continuous learner” and to always try to be learning.

“La Salle provides you an incredible network and community to lean on once you graduate,” Diehl said. “La Salle is really different in that regard.”

Diehl mentioned how his class still gets together and talks after several decades. When asked about things he learned at La Salle, Diehl mentioned how his high school experience taught him to be flexible and open to new opportunities. He said this strategy has helped him as an adult and has been one of the keys to his success.

“Boys go into La Salle and think they’re going to be in sports,” Diehl said. “Then next thing you know they’re doing debate and something totally different. In general, La Salle taught me to be a part of a community and being flexible or open to many opportunities and experiences.”

On top of his personal connection to La Salle, Diehl’s family connections go back even further. His father, Mr. David Diehl ’55, taught at La Salle for more than 50 years, serving as principal for 12 of them. In fact, the David Program, a support service for college-bound students with documented mild learning differences, is named after David Diehl ’55 and Brother David Albert.

Dan Diehl’s wife, Maura, works in college counseling at La Salle, and his two sons, Sean ’17 and Shea ’19, graduated from the school. He encourages current students to take initiative and to take advantage of all La Salle offers.

“Be enthusiastic to keep learning,” Diehl said. “You must always try to improve. You can be successful in a lot of different things with really good people skills, hard work, and effort. You don’t need to be the smartest kid to be successful.”

After attending La Salle, Mr. Diehl went on to receive an engineering degree from the University of Maryland and an MBA from Villanova. Today, Mr. Diehl is currently the CEO and President of Aircuity, which is a company based in Norwood, MA that specializes in air circulation and ventilation. Aircuity has been an industry leader in healthy and sustainable indoor environments for more than 20 years.

COMMITTED TO TEAMWORK CHRISTOPHER W. SCHALLEUR ’90

CLASS OF 1990 Chris Schalleur, a proud member of La Salle College High Schools class of 1990, forged a remarkable 25-year career in the IT industry combining his passion for technology with the values instilled during his time at La Salle. As the founder of Christo IT Services, Schalleur provides small businesses in the Philadelphia region with professional IT support through a personalized approach.

Schalleur’s interest in technology began even before his time at La Salle but he was able to get involved with the limited resources of the time.

“I’ve always been interested in IT and while La Salle didn’t have extensive opportunities at the time, I got involved with what they had,” he shared.

Working with Apple IIe computers and dummy terminals, he developed an early appreciation for problem-solving and adaptability. Influential teachers like Rob Russell in computer science, Brother James in chemistry, and Mr. Parisi in history inspired him to think critically, work hard, and approach challenges with resilience.

“Mr. Parisi quickly made us realize we weren’t in grade school anymore and taught us to figure things out for ourselves,” Schalleur recalled, crediting these lessons as formative in his career.

After graduating from La Salle, Schalleur attended Villanova University, where he refined his skills in technology and business. Following college, he gained valuable experience in IT, engineering, and sales before founding Christo IT Services in 1999.

His mission was to provide small businesses with professional IT support typically reserved for larger companies. Over the years, he has helped countless businesses transition from dial-up Internet to modern connectivity, implement robust cybersecurity measures, and stay ahead of technological advancements.

“It’s funny to think now but introducing people to the concept of email for business was revolutionary,” he said reflecting on his early work.

In 2018, Schalleur co-authored the Amazon best-selling book Sitting Duck: Why YOUR Business is a Cybercriminal’s Ideal Target. The book highlights his expertise in cybersecurity and his commitment to helping businesses understand and combat modern threats.

Throughout his career Schalleur has remained committed to teamwork, of value he attributes to his time at La Salle.

“The most important thing I’ve learned is to build a good team around you,” he emphasized, “you’re ultimately 58 LA SALLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL | SPRING 2025

responsible for making things happen but having strong support makes all the difference.”

He advises inspiring IT professionals to focus on interpersonal skills before diving into technical certifications, stressing that the ability to understand and solve people’s problems is key to success in a rapidly changing field.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Schalleur treasures the lessons he learned from swimming at La Salle.

“Swimming taught me a lot about perseverance and teamwork,” he shared. “Getting up at 4:30 in the morning for practice wasn’t easy, but it shaped my approach to challenges. It’s all about showing up and giving your best effort.”

Early morning practices and the camaraderie of competition gave him an outlook, instilling discipline and a commitment to showing up and giving his best effort every day. These principles continue to guide his leadership style today.

Schalleur remains connected to the La Salle community and values the friendships and experiences that have shaped him into the man he is today. Schalleur’s journey from La Salle student to IT pioneer is a testament to the enduring impact of a La Salle education.

RECOGNIZING THE DIFFERENCE JONATHAN H. SHEVLIN ’95

CLASS OF 1995 Jon Shevlin ’95 has branched out to become quite a success in the financial world. He manages 36 financial advising employees as a Wells Fargo Executive Branch Manager in Conshohocken. After graduating from Villanova University, Shevlin got his career started with Star Security as he managed customer’s accounts for two years. He then met financial advisors in Alabama and became a business development consultant, setting up meetings with employees from every branch.

After the CEO of his company stepped down, Shevlin was promoted to run branch meetings from New York City to Washington D.C. These frequent meetings would occur anywhere between these locations, causing Shevlin to be on the road with investment planning for six years. Although Shevlin seized the opportunity to advance his career, family played a more important role in his life. It caused him to make a difficult decision.

“I then asked for a transfer,” Shevlin said. “I wanted to be able to see my kids grow up.”

Shevlin found the perfect balance at Wells Fargo. His warm personality helps him recruit from other branches to bring in the best financial advisors for his company. He also tries to leave a good impression on clients and employees, whether it’s a social round of golf or a dinner. There are 43 employees in the building today and Shevlin likes the opportunity to interact with other people every day. He always stays connected with his employees on the new clients they are trying to recruit into financial advice.

Shevlin believes his time at La Salle 30 years ago helped him prepare for his pursuit of a degree at Villanova University before thrusting into the professional world.

“La Salle was nothing like it is today,” Shevlin said. “But I was able to take accounting and all the regulars.’’

While an Explorer, Shevlin was a four-year golfer and participated in many other clubs offered by the school. He sent his son to La Salle because he wanted him to receive the same great high school experience.

“Just what La Salle has to offer with all the electives is something we did not have when I was there,” Shevlin said.

Since Shevlin’s time as an Explorer, La Salle has added many opportunities to prepare students for life after high school while giving back to the community. Shevlin still uses those experiences today as he and all his employees partake in service opportunities every year.

“All the service opportunities La Salle offers are great for high schoolers because few high schools offer that at such an early age,” he said.

COMMANDING SHIPS AND SHAPING THE FUTURE LDCR B. RYAN VENTRESCA, USN ’95 CLASS OF 1995

From commanding ships to shaping the future of the Navy, Captain B. Ryan Ventresca, USN ’95 has built a remarkable career in leadership and service. His early experiences at La Salle College High School helped him develop the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

“Life is a team sport,” Ventresca said.

Born in Philadelphia and raised in Wyndmoor, Capt.

Ventresca attended Saint Aloysius Academy for Boys in Bryn Mawr before enrolling at La Salle College High School.

While at La Salle, Ventresca participated in wrestling, crew, and band, where he discovered that a team atmosphere, led by knowledgeable teachers and coaches, pushed him to excel.

“Brother Tim Ahern, Brother Bob Romano, and all of the Christian Brothers (had a positive effect),” Ventresca said.

“My experiences in crew, wrestling, and band also helped instill a sense of service and purpose. My close friends, whom I still see 30 years later, also taught me teamwork, selflessness, and optimism.”

In terms of academics, Capt. Ventresca enjoyed history, which was taught by his favorite teachers: Brother Tim Ahern, Brother Bob Romano, and Mr. John Grace ’73.

After La Salle, Ventresca continued his academic career at the University of Delaware, where he earned a degree in history. He then enrolled in the Naval War College, where he received a master’s in National Security and Strategic Studies and officially joined the Navy, where he continues to serve.

“It was always my desire and dream to be in the Navy,” Ventresca said. “I was commissioned as a Naval Officer in May 2000 from Officer Candidate School, one of three means of being commissioned as an officer.”

After becoming an officer, Ventresca held a variety of positions, including commander of four ships and one task force over the course of his career. His deployments spanned four oceans and most continents, with stops in Europe and Japan. Although Ventresca has enjoyed an exciting and successful career, it hasn’t come without setbacks.

“There were plenty,” Ventresca said. “While I have been selected for and commanded four ships and one task force, I’ve also faced numerous disappointments in not being selected for other positions throughout my career.”

Ventresca persevered and now serves as the Force Improvement and Operational Safety Director in Coronado, California. He holds the rank of Captain, which is equivalent to a colonel in the Army.

Looking back at La Salle, Capt. Ventresca believes the school instilled in him the value of serving others and having purpose in his actions.

“La Salle instilled in me the value of being of service to others and of having purpose in your actions,” he said.

“Those tenets are integral to the Profession of Arms/Naval Profession.”

MAKING CONNECTIONS W. STEWART RYAN, ESQ. ’05

CLASS OF 2005 Stewart Ryan has come a long way from the mock trial team at La Salle College High School. The 2005 graduate went on to become one of the most prominent lawyers in the area, most notably as part of the team that prosecuted famous comedian and TV star Bill Cosby in 2017.

During that time, Ryan performed under a national spotlight as Cosby was convicted of three counts of aggravated indecent assault and was sentenced to prison time.

“The stakes are very high,” Ryan recalled. “We were under a microscope as there were people looking very carefully at everything you were doing.”

Ryan claimed how the intense spotlight made the case more challenging than his other trials, although he was no stranger to high-profile court hearings. Just a summer before the Cosby case, Ryan was a part of the prosecution team against former Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane.

“So that was really significant,” Ryan said. “We thought (Kane’s case) was high-profile and then we prosecuted Cosby, and it was like that, times ten, if not more.”

Ryan’s career path can be traced back to his early days at La Sallle. In high school, Ryan was a very active member of La Salle’s clubs and activities. Starting freshman year Ryan was a part of the mock trial team, as well as the football team. Ryan also took part in theater his senior year. He attributes his career choice to his time on the mock trial team and football team. He said he enjoyed the pressure as a lineman on the gridiron.

“When I was taking on the role of a lawyer, it kind of felt a little bit similar (to football), that sort of nervous energy had a pretty significant impact because from that point forward I figured that what I wanted to do was practice law,” Ryan said.

Ryan continued his education and football career while studying at Franklin & Marshall College. The connections he formed at La Salle helped Ryan throughout his future.

His mock trial teammate Matt Quigg helped Ryan get an internship at the Montgomery Country’s District Attorney’s office and connected him with someone at Ryan’s current

law firm. His mock trial coach at La Salle, Scott Wolpert, also served as a mentor throughout Ryan’s career. Ryan is still in communication with both Wolpert and Quigg as of today.

“There’s been a pretty significant impact that La Salle has had and the people I’ve met especially, in terms of my career and I just kind of add onto that,” Ryan said.

In addition to hard work and dedication, Ryan’s Journey from La Salle to Partner at Laffey Bucci D’Andrea Reich & Ryan LLP was helped greatly by the relationships he made at La Salle.

“There’s so many people, older than me younger than me, that you just have an automatic connection with even if you don’t know them but just because they went to La Salle,” Ryan said.

CLASS OF 2005 Tom Lyons ’05 has achieved a major professional milestone. He was recently promoted to partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, one of the world’s largest and best regarded accounting and professional services firms.

Lyons reflected on the impact La Salle had on him in terms of his personal growth, academic foundation, and the diligence it trained him to exercise as he pursued his professional accomplishments.

“I loved my time at La Salle,” Lyons said. “I view it as significant in my formation, as a man today and as a professional. It gave me space to grow and great mentors who challenged me.”

Lyons, who recently relocated with his family to Houston after spending many years in the Philadelphia area, works in audit and assurance services at PwC. He helps guide investment firms, hedge funds, and private equity clients through transactions and emerging business trends like Bitcoin and other digital assets, including the impact they may have on clients’ businesses. In a typical workday, Lyons meets with internal teams of up to 20 employees to check on the status of projects and he also meets with clients to answer questions and help them think through and adapt to the latest business challenges.

At La Salle, Lyons played basketball and baseball. He credits his coaches, and especially basketball coach Marty Jackson, with teaching him the resilience he still draws on today.

“He told us things aren’t always going to go your way in a game, and that you’ve got to bear down and work through it,” Lyons said. “That’s exactly what you need to do in life and in your career when challenges hit.”

Balancing sports and a demanding academic schedule at La Salle also prepared Lyons to work the long hours his career in public accounting demands and trained him in how to balance differing client demands.

Lyons easily remembers his favorite classes at La Salle and the teachers who made the greatest impact.

“English classes with Betty Field were always a challenge in a good way to learn to be a better writer,” he said. “Doing accounting, you don’t necessarily think that you would write a lot, but essentially a lot of my job is reading and writing.”

But it was his class in accounting that led Lyons to his career path. Lyons initially thought he wanted to be an entrepreneur and own a business. An intro to accounting

class he took in college resonated with him, however, and he realized that accounting is “the fundamental systematic language of business.” An internship at PwC, one of the “Big Four” accounting firms, eventually became a full-time job.

Even after two decades, Lyons still has a strong sense of the La Salle brotherhood.

“We have a bond,” he said. “We walked the same halls and have gone through the same experience. Anyone that I’ve ever met that went to La Salle that reaches out looking for career guidance, it’s a meeting that I’ll never say no to.”

Lyons also fondly remembers his friends, many of whom are still in touch, and the fun they had at La Salle, including one friend who drove to school in his pajamas and changed at school to avoid being late. Lyons also continues to benefit from the La Salle alumni brotherhood, which provided him with advice and assistance whenever he has reached out.

Lyons credits “the Brothers and their commitment to the mission of the education of the whole young man” with making La Salle unique. He is appreciative of his foundation at La Salle and the opportunities he has had to grow in his career and become a leader.

FOLLOWING HIS OWN PATH ROBERT SCANLON ’10

CLASS OF 2010 After following family footsteps, Bobby Scanlon made his own path.

Growing up in Willow Grove where he attended Saint David’s School (now Queen of Angels), Scanlon first learned about La Salle College High School through his family ties.

Cousins on both sides of his family attended La Salle, and it took little convincing from them to join a family tradition and receive his education at La Salle. Once there, he cherished his time in high school as it made a major impact on setting him up for his future.

“The school had such rigor and excitement in the classroom, on the stage, on the sports field,” Scanlon, a 2010 graduate, recalled. “It was great to see that kind of dynamic.”

Scanlon learned in high school that if you pursue something you love, it will make the workday much more enjoyable.

“What I realized at La Salle is if you combine your passions and interests into a field of work that you are really interested in, it doesn’t always feel like work,” Scanlon said.

After his time at La Salle, Scanlon went on to Temple University where he studied Management Information Systems and Digital Marketing. He then moved into traditional advertising for five years where he worked at a couple of different firms. From there he got into the tech work field with Google in 2019 and Tik Tok in 2021, before returning to Google in 2024. He currently serves on Google’s Cloud Marketing team and is a strategy consultant.

Scanlon said he valued his time at La Salle, which helped him discover his passion for his career. He said trying different opportunities La Salle helped him test what he really wanted to do in his life.

“I think my career and life are better since I chose La Salle,” Scanlon said.

As an Explorer, Scanlon participated in student council, government, community service, art club, yearbook, musical, and was a track and field manager. He said the time teachers like Mr. Diehl and Mr. Hearn took to guide him really inspired him to be creative and work hard. La Salle provides so many different opportunities for all types of students looking to explore their interests.

“The kinds of opportunities that are not only provided but encouraged, are gifts that I continue to think about and be grateful for,” Scanlon said.

He hopes it helps current and future students find their way.

“There are so many different clubs and so many different types of activities,” Scanlon said. “And there’s this expectation from faculty and the community that you not only explore them but that you also own that as well.”

VARIED Backgrounds ALUMNI ASSOCIATION HOSTS YOUNG ALUMNI CAREER AND NETWORKING NIGHT The Alumni Association held the inaugural Young Alumni Career and Networking Night on May 14, 2025. Attended by over 200 alumni, the event was for the Classes of 2013 to 2023 and featured over thirty alumni representing sixteen different fields/industries. The evening began with remarks from Alumni Association President Brendan O’Malley ’94 and continued with keynote addresses by PA State Representative, Honorable Sean Dougherty, Esq. ’12 along with City Councilman, Dr. Anthony Phillips ’06. Each attendee was able to choose one break-out session led by two alumni in that industry or field of business. At the conclusion of the break-out sessions, the Alumni Association hosted a reception for everyone in attendance, which provided alumni an opportunity to network. LACROSSE The Lacrosse Team went undefeated in league play and finished with a record of 18-6, repeating as Philadelphia Catholic League and District 12 (City) Champions. The Explorers lost to Springfield (Delco) in the semifinals of the PIAA State Tournament. Fourteen players were All-Catholic selections, five players were named tot eh AllState Team, and one player was selected as USA All-American.

TENNIS The Tennis Team went 11-5 overall and undefeated in the Philadelphia Catholic League. Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead with both doubles teams winning, the Explorers lost a hard-fought battle 3-2 battle with Devon Prep in the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship. The following week, they defeated Central High School to capture their first District XII (City) Championship since 2019, and first appearance in the PIAA state playoffs since 2019 where they fell to Lower Merion, the No. 3 seed from District I. Andrew Gaylord represented La Salle in the PIAA District XII Singles Tournament and was named Co-MVP of the league after earning First Team All-Catholic honors with Alex Patenko.

BASEBALL The Explorers finished with a 15-4 overall record and a 10-2 record in the regular season, earning the No. 1 seed in the Philadelphia Catholic League Tournament. The Explorers fell to BonnerPrendergast in the semifinals of the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship. Seven players earned All-Catholic Honors, including Caden Schmidt (League MVP), Chris Cavalcante (PitcherOf-The-Year), and Jack Pye.

CREW Over 70 student athletes competed against the very best Scholastic Crews in the country. Continuing their success from the fall season of capturing gold in the Navy Day, Kings Head, and Frostbite Regattas as well as racing to a guaranteed entry for the Head of the Charles come fall, the Explorers, for the first time in school history, three-peated winning the Manny Flick Point Trophy as regular season champs. In March, they traveled to Galway, Ireland, to compete in the Tribesmen’s Head Regatta, where they raced against the reigning and runner-up Irish crews and won a bronze medal.

At the City Championships, nine crews advanced to the finals, six of them securing automatic qualifying bids to the National Championship Regatta. In the closest race of the day, the Varsity Eight was just edged by Montclair. The team closed out its season at the Scholastic National Championship Regatta in Camden, NJ where five of six boats qualified to continue racing after day one and the Lightweight Four came away as Scholastic Rowing Champions.

RUGBY Rugby began their season in early March and wrapped up in May with Varsity Gold traveling to Gregory the Great Academy for their final match, while Varsity Blue played locally at MontBucks RFC in the State Quarterfinals. The U16 team won their final match on May 5, 2025. Varsity Gold participated in the Gonzaga Rugby Classic in April, finishing the weekend 3-1, where they faced opponents from Washington, DC, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, but watched matches with teams spanning from Boston to Guam!

The program had over 90 student athletes participate in the spring, including thirteen seniors, several of whom plan to continue their playing careers at the collegiate level.

TRACK AND FIELD The Track and Field Team concluded an incredibly successful season by capturing the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship with 182 points, the District 12 (City) Championship with 154 points, and then placed in a tie for 13th at the PIAA State Championship. Nolan Yeagle won both the 800m and Mile races and was named Co-MVP of the track events at the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship. Gavin Muller won both the Shot Put and Discus, and twelve Explorers were named as First Team All-Catholic selections. At the District 12 (City) Championship, eight athletes and two relay teams qualified for the State Championship by either finishing in the top two and/or hitting the respective State Qualifying Standard in their event. The two relay teams, 4x400m and 4x800m, finished in 2nd and 3rd place at the State Championship held over Memorial Day weekend at Shippensburg University.

VOLLEYBALL The Volleyball Team, under the direction of first-year coach Tim Moyer, finished the regular season with an overall record of 12-5, and a league record of 9-1. The Explorers won the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship 3-0 over Lansdale Catholic, revenging an earlier season loss as well as a loss in last year’s final.

Unfortunately, the Explorers lost to George Washington High School 1-3 in the District XII Championship. Tate Muhl ’25, Chris McKnight ’25, and Tony Hunt ’26 all earned First Team All-Catholic honors.

APRIL 25, 2025 The weather was perfect for Field Day on April 25, 2025, as homerooms competed against each other in over three dozen events. The day featured spirited competition, notable sportsmanship, and a campus filled with smiles and laughs. The winning homeroom was determined by an giant obstacle course that took its toll on many a competitor in search of that ultimate prize – bragging rights.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION APRIL 15, 2025

On April 15, 2025, 78 young men were inducted into the De La Salle Chapter of the National Honor Society at a ceremony in the auditorium. Selection for membership requires that the student maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.80, achieve a final grade no lower than a B- in any class, have a record of good conduct, demonstrate leadership, participate in service activities and in an acceptable number of extra-curricular activities within the school community as well as the community at large. The student must also exhibit positive qualities and attitudes of responsibility, honesty, reliability, cooperation, and concern for others.

APRIL 30, 2025 AND MAY 6, 2025 As part of the school’s annual Arts Festival, the Music Department at La Salle College High School performed its annual Spring Band and Orchestra Concert on April 30, 2025. The concert featured over 250 musicians in eight different ensembles, performing 16 numbers. The Choral Program, under the direction of Mr. Mark Norman and comprised of over 60 singers, treated attendees to 14 arrangements at a concert on May 6, 2025.

WARD FITZGERALD ’81 and his wife, Kathy, were the recipients of the Saint Charles Borromeo Award, given by the Board of Trustees of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary to recognize those who lead lives of deeply impactful service to others with humility.

Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, D.D., Archbishop of Philadelphia, presented the award to Ward and Kathy on March 19, 2025, during a gala at the Crystal Tea Room in Philadelphia.

“The Seminary is proud to honor Kathy and Ward Fitzgerald for their efforts in the local community, the Catholic community and beyond, setting an example of servant leadership for others to follow,” said Most Reverend Keith J. Chylinski, Rector of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary and Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia.

“Like Saint Charles Borromeo, who lived a life of service and humility, the Fitzgeralds share their many talents and unwavering generosity for the betterment of our local and global community.”

“Kathy and I are humbled to serve the Church and Archdiocese,” commented Ward in a recent interview.

“Philadelphia is among the centers of the Catholic Church, holding the Providence as the only US city to be home to two saints – Saint Katharine Drexel and Saint John Neumann,” Mrs. Fitzgerald added. “We are blessed to be vessels of the Church to help Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary continue its mission of helping men called to be witnesses in the ministry of Jesus Christ to fortify their journey.”

RICHARD SHERMAN ’85 spoke to La Salle students during Community Time. Rich presented his photographic remembrance of our men and women in the military who were laid to rest in one of the many overseas U.S. military cemeteries.

CHRISTOPHER CAWLEY ’09 has been running a successful antiques and interiors business in New York City and was recently named one of the “83 Home Decor Stores to Shop Now and Always” by Architectural Digest.

GERALD BERGEN ’95 attended the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, WI as an Alternate Delegate, elected from the 3rd Congressional District of Pennsylvania.

EUGENE HALUS ’86 is a producer and commentator for American Veterans Media and has a documentary – “Remember the 27 Crusaders” – running nationally on the PBS App this fall. The film is about the 27 Father Judge alumni killed in the Vietnam War and the effect of their deaths on their families and neighborhoods.

KEITH MILLER ’89 retired from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve as a Sergeant Major, after 30 years of honorable and faithful service.

ROB DONAHUE ’90 married Christina McAdams, MD on June 29, 2024 at the Washington Crossing Inn in front of a small gathering of family and friends, including fellow Explorers: Linda Donahue (Faculty 1983-2017), Jim Donahue ’86, Jake Donahue ’16, Clay Donahue ’19 (remotely from Germany), Owen Donahue ’21, George Collins ’90, Mike Hayes ’90 (remotely from Kuwait), Chris Hoover ’90, Brian McManus ’90, Ed McQuillen ’90, Chris Schalleur ’90, and Ethan Marquette ’25.

DARNELL “SPEEDY” ARTIS ’12 was named as the Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball team at Gwynedd Nercy University. Artis is a distinguished alumnus and member of the GMercyU Hall of Fame. A celebrated member of the 2015-2016 championship squad and one of the most recognizable faces of GMercyU Athletics, Artis brings both professional experience and a deep commitment to the University’s Mercy values. After his collegiate success, Artis went on to captivate global audiences as a standout member of the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters.

PAUL KAHAN ’98 just published his seventh book, Philadelphia: A Narrative History (University of Pennsylvania Press), which is available at Amazon and Penn Press’s website. The book is the first single-volume narrative history of Philadelphia in more than forty years and has been praised by Inga Saffron, the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic, as a "sharp and accessible history." Paul is the executive director of the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center in West Chester, PA.

Shelice’s Angels has already touched the lives of hundreds of adolescent women with several initiatives that have promoted careers in technology, community giving, and academic achievement.

To honor his late grandmother Juanita Highsmith, Zaire will also be starting a scholarship fund to honor her memory and give a student from Philadelphia an opportunity to attend La Salle College High School.

ZAIRE FRANKLIN ’14, Captain of the Indianapolis Colts and seven-year NFL veteran, has announced a scholarship fund for one student per year to attend La Salle College High School.

Franklin, a 7th round pick out of Syracuse University, has been operating a non-profit in memory of his late mother Shelice Highsmith called Shelice’s Angels. Organized in 2019, the foundation’s goal is to help young women see the many opportunities

CONNOR WILLIAMS ’15 received the 2024 John Dawson Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics, awarded by the American Physical Society (APS) for pioneering the development of statistical modeling to predict, design, and analyze implosion experiments on the 30-kJ OMEGA laser, achieving fuel hot-spot energy gains above unity and record Lawson triple products for direct-drive laser fusion. He received his PhD in physics from the University of Rochester in August of 2023. The award is shared between Connor and several collaborators that he had while at Rochester. Connor returned to his alma mater in October of 2025 as speaker for the annual Honors Convocation.
