LET US REMEMBER LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear La Salle Family, It seems like this year was bookended, at least photographically, by a kid with some spectacular hops. On the cover of this magazine, you find soccer team captain and student body president Shea Crawford ’26 displaying some agility in that fall sport. At the end of the year, along with millions of America’s youth, particularly prep school boys, Shea took up the gentleman’s sport of hacky sack and appeared in this photograph which achieved much currency, not in print but on the various social media sites that support “sacking” in the scholastic milieu.

La Salle is all about the proverbial “leap of faith.” It always was. It began when John Baptist de La Salle said yes, he could help with those fledgling schools for boys whose background was so different from his own.

It continued when he brought the vulgarian schoolteachers into his own aristocratic home and made them Brothers. It was seen as he battled numerous parish priests, his own kind, to ensure the schools had the proper resources to flourish, even when canonical weapons were wielded against him. It culminated when he accepted the call-command, really — of the Brothers to return to his leadership role after he chucked it all in, a supremely frustrated old man, and took off for the south of France. It’s small wonder that de La Salle gave faith and zeal intertwined to be the distinctive spirit of the religious institute he founded.

Our parents take a leap of faith today as well.

You can hear in your own minds the things said to them when they have a seventh or eighth grade son: “We have well-regarded public schools. Why would you pay for secondary education?” “Is it really three times better than an archdiocesan high school? One of those was good enough for you.” “Wouldn’t a non-sectarian private school from the InterAc really leave him better situated in terms of connections and elite university placement?”

Parents hear those things and must conclude that no, the Catholic faith, Lasallian tradition, the culture and camaraderie of an all-boys school, and independent school rigor, creativity, and flexibility all have value, all are worth it.

But the boy needs to take a leap of faith as well, perhaps no less daunting at 14, even if the investment of more than $100,000 isn’t his.

He might be the only one from his eighth-grade class, not seeing as many who resemble him as he did in that prior class. Just about every sport here attracts a fair number of prodigies; in most sports the possibility of getting cut looms

Here’s a roomful of kids with the same distinction in your AP Human Geography class come August of freshman year. How will you measure up when you’re not sure you’re the smartest person in the room?

I may not be the smartest person in the room, but I think I’m one of the most observant. Observant and worldly-wise, I think it’d be fair to say. So, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I say the most profound leap of faith made here at La Salle may not be at the beginning of the experience but at the end. Passing out every diploma and shaking every hand, each year I see those whose faces are too filled with emotion even to mumble the customary platitudes of gratitude.

Sometime after Easter, it dawns on most seniors that they both liked it and had it pretty good here. And all that is about to fade away. It’s inevitable that I’ll run into at least one potential graduate in the month of May just looking around, seemingly unfocused. “What’s on your mind?” I might query, only to get the same response: “I don’t want to leave here.” I’m usually more pastoral than this, but the truth is clear. This isn’t The Trouble With Angels, and you can’t just join up and move into the Mattison Castle for life the way Haley Mills did at the end of that film. No, it’s right that you go, and go you have to. A leap of faith is required.

But moving on doesn’t mean forgetting. This Explorer magazine is published because so many of you, alumni, past parents and faculty, or even just friends, care passionately about La Salle, what is going on here, what the student experience is like today, traditional activities like football and debate, new ones like robotics and ultimate frisbee. In many ways, if La Salle were to have a “How it Works” section similar to that in the Big Book, it would sound the theme of the last article in this publication, Jack Dorsey ’26’s “Bound by a Brotherhood.”

The La Salle brotherhood, initially an enigma, perhaps early on a challenge, eventually becomes a psychological safety net of the finest material. The experience of this talented, supportive, energetic, and engaged group of peers makes one confident, free and humble enough to start a club, sport, or fraternity fund-raiser in college, study abroad though not in Dublin or London where you can communicate readily but in Japan, accept a job three-quarters of the way across the country after graduation, found a business, invest in a passion project, propose to a woman who seems way out of my league, sell the company at 50 with the confidence that the last four decades of my life won’t be wasted.

Because after all, I’ve made a leap of faith before. I landed on my feet.

Please join me in praying for the young men of the Class of 2026, our newest alumni. May the brotherhood they are bound by give them the courage and confidence to make leaps of faith throughout life, both those that seem like a blessed opportunity and those compelled by circumstances they might not choose. For it is only after taking such leaps repeatedly that we come to understand both who we are and who God is.

A Championship SEASON

BY PATRICK CHRISTOPHER BIRKHEAD ’28 For sixteen years, the PIAA football state championship remained uncharted territory for La Salle College High School.

In the 2025 season, a group of Explorers mapped out a title that will go down in La Salle history. Those Explorers captured the program’s first state championship since 2009. The team is an example of La Salle showcasing athletics, community, and extracurriculars.

In 2009, La Salle took home its first state championship in football. Since then, countless players, coaches, parents, and community members have been working to recapture the glory of that championship season. After coming close in 2024, the 2025 edition of Explorers football set out on an expedition to bring the trophy home to Wyndmoor.

Heading into the new season, a lot of work had been put in on the field as well as the weight room. Two-way star Jimmy Mahoney remarked on the preparation. “Going back to the summer we did a lot of conditioning work with Coach Kenny and to me that was one of the biggest things,” Mahoney said.

“Last year we were definitely conditioned, but this year it was another level over the summer.”

After a successful 2024 campaign, La Salle came into the new season as one of the top-ranked teams in the state. With success comes challenges, and the Explorers crafted a tough non-conference schedule to begin the season. Pittsburgh Central Catholic, Malvern Prep, and Salesianum stood as the first three obstacles.

“The plan was to play as many tough opponents outside the conference as we could, to get us ready to win tough physical playoff games,” Head Coach Brett Gordon explained. “If you look at how this past year played out, with the likes of Central Catholic, certainly Malvern, and Salesianum who all turned out to be very formidable opponents, that helped us get ready for our league.”

From Wolverana in Pittsburgh to Ocean City, and finally Delaware, the Explorers were proving themselves everywhere. They won a highly anticipated matchup against Pittsburgh Central Catholic on the other side of the state. It wasn’t their prettiest performance, but they got the job done.

What followed were two more close contests as La Salle narrowly defeated Malvern Prep and Salesianum. The Friars had an opportunity to win it late in the game, but the La Salle defense held strong. Against the Sallies, it was close until it wasn’t, and eventually La Salle would pull away, claiming a 28-17 win over the pride of Delaware.

Entering league play, it seemed like the mission for a Philadelphia Catholic League championship would be between three teams: La Salle, Saint Joseph’s Prep, and Roman Catholic. The Explorers traveled to Widener University to face the Roman Catholic Cahillites in their first game.

In a close shoot-out, La Salle would lose the game. This could have been viewed as the low point of the season, but the Explorers used it as fuel. The team took the loss at Widener University personally and had a golden opportunity to reassert themselves as the top team in the state.

“I never wondered for this group how important it was to them, but I think for them to realize that the clock was ticking, that loss helped accelerate the sense of urgency.”

La Salle was unaffected by the previous week’s loss and beat the Hawks 31-20 in front of a large crowd in University City. At this moment, the season, which had already been going well, seemed like it would be a special one.

“

That win meant a lot. We lost to a good Roman team last week, but we worked hard all week in practice, got extra work in, and did what La Salle football is supposed to do.

“

In a historic rivalry that was played at Franklin Field, the Explorers faced the team that had ended their state championship hopes the previous season, Saint Joseph’s Prep. With plenty of exposure to the big game, La Salle had to stay calm. Coach Gordon spoke confidently about how he managed the situation.

Senior J.P. Oates stated it perfectly, “the team did exactly what La Salle football is supposed to do.” The Explorers continued to do their thing for the rest of the regular season, cruising past Bonner-Prendergast, Father Judge, and Cardinal O’Hara.

These three wins gave La Salle its second straight PCL championship and plenty of momentum to carry into its biggest game all year, the one they had worked for since 2024. Another rematch between two heavyweights, this time for a state playoff spot in the 6A bracket.

On a Saturday afternoon, with a slight hint of winter in the air, La Salle traveled to Villanova University to take on the Hawks of Saint Joseph’s Prep for a second time. The game began rather slowly, and eventually La Salle was able to take a 7-0 lead. As it turned out, La Salle would never look back, and the star of the show was sophomore Owen Johnson, who hauled in two touchdowns. La Salle would win the game 24-14, advancing to the District 12 6A Championship.

Senior leader Jimmy Mahoney looked back on the preparation going into that game. “Going into the Prep game, we had a chip on our shoulders, especially from previous matchups,” Mahoney said, “everyone took that adversity to heart, and we came together during those two weeks of practice.”

Mahoney, to this point, had been a star for the Explorers, proving himself to be a player who stepped up in big moments.

Whether it was long touchdowns or tackles defensively, Mahoney was a part of the group that made this team go.

A rolling La Salle team still had games to explore, and the first was Imhotep Charter for the District 12 (City) Championship at Northeast High School. After a resounding offensive performance in the first half, La Salle would face adversity in the second and narrowly survived with a 31-16 win.

The following two games in the state quarter and semi-finals were where La Salle proved to be the cream of the crop in Pennsylvania. First, they defeated Easton, 49-7, in a game at Frank Banko Field in Bethlehem. The following week, they knocked out North Penn 49-14. With these wins came the opportunity to break the state championship drought.

The game was set for Saturday, December 6, 2025 at Cumberland Valley High School against Pittsburgh Central Catholic – the same Lasallian school the Explorers faced in the season opener.

La Salle’s lines on both sides of the ball had the advantage throughout the physical game, which opened lanes for junior running back Ahzir Nelson. The best passing offense in the state was leaning on its run game, but it was strategic.

All the way back in August, Coach Gordon had recognized that his offensive line could win the battle against the Vikings, and this ultimately put the Explorers in a position to win the game. Up seven points with their defense on the field, La Salle needed a stop. On top of a stop, they got an interception from Notre Dame-bound senior Joey O’Brien, who was far from done.

We will continue to focus on our progress every week as to how we can become the best versions of ourselves, which we know will then lead to success on the field.

O’Brien picked off two more passes, running one back for a “pick six” touchdown, and helped navigate the Explorers to a 34-20 victory. The 2025 La Salle Explorers had done what they had been planning on for years, winning a state championship. Credit must be awarded to everyone involved: the parents, faculty, student section, pep band, players, coaches, and especially Coach Brett Gordon, the La Salle alum who won a state championship in just his second year. In doing so, he and his father, Drew, who coached the team in 2009, became the first father and son to capture Pennsylvania State Championships.

The 12th MAN

Sometimes, it takes an entire village to win a high school football state championship.

It was no secret that the La Salle College High School had high expectations entering the 2025 season. With hopes of capturing their first state championship since 2009, the Explorers were primed for glory — and they had a whole school and an entire community behind them.

Eleven heavily-padded players at a time got the job done on the field. Hundreds more joined that quest from beyond the sidelines. Most notably the La Salle Pep Band and a large, enthusiastic student section helped create the tone that brought a long-awaited state championship trophy back to Wyndmoor.

“Obviously it’s nice having your parents there but having your close friends and kids that look up to you in the stands is kind of cool to have,” said La Salle Student Council President Shea Crawford ’26. “Students were getting there two hours before the game. It shows the dedication they have for the team. Some games, it was packed by 5 o’clock and there was no more room left in the student section.”

The student section didn’t just arrive and cheer; it made a concentrated effort to come up with themes for each game.

A red, white and blue “USA” theme took over Ocean City for the Battle at the Beach in August. A blackout set an eerie, intimidating mood at Franklin Field vs. Saint Joeseph's Prep.

And a Peaky Blinders theme brought out fun century-old British attire for the playoffs. There was another fun surprise waiting around every corner.

“As student body president, you feel like you should be that person to bring the community together,” Crawford said, adding he received a lot of help from fellow students. “I had a bunch of my friends help me with ideas that brought it all together. It all started with Labor Day down the shore with our USA theme. It was a great start, and I think that kind of helped with a bunch of new ideas and it brought more people to games than I could ever expect.”

The football team, the student section, and the band all hit the road together each week. Since La Salle doesn't play its home games on campus, there’s a travel aspect to every game. The pep band averages about 40-50 musicians participating in each game from its overall cast of more than 80 students. The tubas, trombones, drums, guitars and amplifiers all make the trip.

“We get there 60 to 90 minutes before the game and set up and do a pregame show,” said La Salle Band Director Chris Mele ’13.

Mele said the pep band is always open to anyone that wants to be part of the tradition. It’s a way of bringing the school together for a common cause.

“My motto is that if you want to show up and hold an instrument, you can be a part of the pep band,” Mele said.

“It’s the first thing we start our year with, and it’s my way of building the community and the camaraderie. At La Salle, we celebrate excellence. We are a group that is a part of all things, whether it’s festivals or pep rallies or sporting events. If you come to La Salle and don’t exactly have a

place where you fit in, this is a great way to experience the program but the school as a whole and feel like you are a part of something.”

The pep band’s contributions don’t go unnoticed and, often, they took requests.

“This year especially, we used “Sweet Caroline” as our gameending song whenever we won,” student band president Liam McCaffrey ’26 said. “That was a really good song for all of us because the student section would ask for it. I’d have to hold them off because we were saving it for the end. That was a big one.”

“

As a student, that was huge for me, realizing that we’re all part of the same team,” Mele said. “Whether you are playing trombone or nose tackle, you can get the same type of respect and clout because we all appreciate excellence and we’re all doing it for the same reasons.

“

The song catalogue was fluid. The pep band was usually able to meet requests on the fly or switch things up for a big moment.

“Because we have such great musicians here, we’re able to be super flexible,” Mele said. “I love giving them what they want and not just whatever the field show we practiced in July was.”

For Mele, the state championship came full circle. The football team won it all when he was a freshman trombone

player in 2009. It was a welcoming moment for Mele back then, just like it is for incoming freshmen today.

Crawford experienced the love and support of the student section personally as it cheered on his Explorers’ soccer team to another successful season before it set its undivided attention to the football field.

“Having those games when my friends are there is so cool,” Crawford said. “Giving them back what they gave me is something I’ll always remember. It kind of defines the La Salle community in a way and shows how tight knit it really is.”

That support included long days and tiring drives to faroff locations across the state. The La Salle student body answered the call.

“It’s always fun spending time with everyone,” McCaffrey said. “Those last few games, when we didn’t know if we were going to keep going, everyone was on the bus having a great time all listening to music on the way back. That final playoff weekend when we won, we were all listening to Christmas music on the way home and singing along and celebrating before everyone fell asleep.”

La Salle Explorers 34, Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings 20 — It was a victory for the entire school.

“Obviously I’m not on the field, but it’s a 12th man sort of thing,” Crawford said. “Having that role was really cool and having it all work out and win a state championship in the end is something I will remember forever.”

LA SALLE OPENS DOORS FOR 167 TIME WELCOMES THE CLASS OF 2029 TH

AUGUST 19-20, 2025 La Salle College High School opened its doors on August 19, 2025, for the start of the school’s 167th academic year.

Over 300 boys from local middle and elementary schools were welcomed to the Class of 2029 by the faculty, staff, and administration with various orientation activities. The students were greeted at the entrance of the school by Brother James Butler, FSC, Principal James Fyke, senior members of the Student Council, the Explorer, and the sounds of the La Salle Pep Band. As part of the freshman class ritual, each young man received a class tie and participated in a ceremony for the planting of their class tree.

SEPTEMBER 28, 2025 La Salle College High School welcomed over 300 prospective families to campus Sunday, September 28, 2025 for the annual Open House, showcasing the spirit of brotherhood, academic excellence, and holistic formation that define a Lasallian education. Guests had the opportunity to meet faculty, current students, and alumni; explore classrooms and labs; hop a ride on a trolley to explore the 84-acre campus, and experience firsthand the innovative programs that prepare Explorers to “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.” The day highlighted La Salle’s commitment to forming young men as Men of Faith, Service, Intellect, and Accomplishment, rooted in the vision of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. Families discovered the wide range of academic pathways, co-curricular activities, athletics, and service opportunities that make La Salle’s educational experience unique.

NATIONAL MERIT RECOGNIZED STUDENTS OCTOBER 1, 2025

Nineteen seniors from La Salle College High School were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for their outstanding academic achievement. The National Merit Scholarship Program honored the nation’s top students based on their performance on the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). Recognition at this level is a mark of exceptional scholastic promise and a testament to hard work. Over 1.3 million juniors in about 20,000 high schools entered the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program, and the nationwide pool of recognized students includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

GAME DAY LIVE AT FRANKLIN FIELD LA SALLE VS. SAINT JOSEPH'S PREP OCTOBER 4, 2025

Prior to the highly anticipated football game between La Salle and Saint Joseph's Prep at Franklin Field, the Alumni Association hosted a "Game Day Live." The event was held on the South Green behind the historic stadium and was attended by several hundred alumni and parents.

COLLEGE CONVERSATION DAY OCTOBER 7, 2025

On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the Class of 2026 participated in the refreshed and reimagined annual College Conversation Day. La Salle is one of the few schools in the nation to host such an event and has been doing so for over 35 years.

50 admissions representatives and 46 colleges and universities were in attendance, including a wide range of local private colleges, Pennsylvania state-related universities, nationally ranked Catholic colleges, public research universities, and highly selective liberal arts colleges. The colleges and universities represented a wide geographic array of states including Maine, Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, Ohio, and South Carolina. During the course of the day, 238 members of the Class of 2026 were scheduled for over 440 individual meetings with the colleges of their choice. Throughout the morning, an additional 40+ meetings were scheduled as students got excited about the day. In the exchange, seniors presented their transcripts and activities resumes, had the opportunity to provide additional personal information, asked questions about the colleges and universities, and received an honest admissions evaluation on their admissibility to each institution. The college representatives benefited from getting to know the applicants and La Salle College High School beyond the applications, transcripts, and high school profile. As in years past, many of the admission representatives commented on the value of the day and remarked glowingly on how the young men of La Salle presented themselves and how well-prepared they were.

HONORS CONVOCATION RECOGNIZING 25-YEARS OF SERVICE OCTOBER 13, 2025

La Salle College High School held its annual Academic Honors Convocation on October 13, 2025 in the Charles “Obie” O’Brien Gymnasium and awarded a Scholastic "L" to 384 First Honor Students – 154 seniors, 98 juniors, and 132 sophomores – who distinguished themselves by attaining a final grade point average of 3.75 or above and no grade below a "B-" at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 academic year. In addition, 223 boys – 92 seniors, 66 juniors, and 65 sophomores – were recognized for having a final GPA of 4.0 or higher at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 school year. The National Honor Society Officers were formerly installed, and four members of the faculty/staff were recognized for 25-years of service to La Salle College High School: Cathleen Winning, Lastenia Breen, Daniel Cipolla, and Gerry Hartey ’93. The event concluded with keynote remarks from Dr. Connor Williams ’15, a Theoretical Physicist at Sandia National Laboratories and a former Valedictorian.

FRESHMAN BRANCH-OUT DAY OCTOBER 21, 2025

On October 21, 2025, the freshman class (Class of 2029) participated in Freshman Branch-Out Day. Over 300 students, along with almost 200 of their fathers and 30 members of school's faculty and staff, performed a day of service at 21 different “under-served” sites in the Philadelphia Area. This year marked the 20th year that the freshman class at La Salle College High School has "branched out" in service to the community. In total, over 450 members of the La Salle community collectively provided over 1,600 hours of service to these organizations. The day concluded with a discussion about the integral role community service plays in the Lasallian mission and a challenge to the freshmen to find their role in that mission.

ONE ACT PLAYS

OCTOBER 24-25, 2025 The Theater Program at La Salle College High School performed seven one act plays – including five student-written and student-directed shows – as part of the school's annual One Act Play Festival held in the auditorium October 24-25, 2025.

Two other plays were written and directed by faculty members and, under the direction of Jack Mills ’12, nearly 30 actors and actresses staged performances on Friday and Saturday night.

On November 9, 2025, over 260 members of the Class of 2027, along with their families attended the Brother Edward Gallagher, FSC Leadership Liturgy. Named in honor of Brother Edward Gallagher, FSC who twice served as Principal of La Salle College High School (1966-69 and 1972-77), the event marked the transition to leadership for the junior class.

The day began with a Mass celebrated in the gymnasium by Reverend Anthony Janton, AFSC �69 and concluded with a leadership pledge along with the blessing and presentation of the Class of 2027 Leadership Pin along with class rings for those who purchased them.

DECEMBER 3, 2025 AND DECEMBER 9, 2025 The Music Department at La Salle College High School performed their annual Band and Orchestra Christmas Concert to a "packed house" on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. Nearly 600 people attended the concert, which featured seven different ensembles performing sixteen numbers. The Concert Band performed How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and the String Orchestra performed three numbers, including Let There Be Peace On Earth. The Guitar Ensemble performed I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and, after an intermission that included homemade cookies from parents of the musicians, the Freshman Band was welcomed to the La Salle stage for the first time with two numbers. Santa Claus made an appearance and gave the Band Director, Mr. Chris Mele '13, what he wanted for Christmas - seven freshman trombone players. The Honors Advanced Band was the last to perform as Band President, Liam McCaffery '26, put down his trumpet and picked up a microphone and sung the lyrics to Santa Is Comin', a famous arrangement by Tom Scott. The concert concluded with a sing-along of White Christmas led by Luke Hober '26 and Charles McGoldrick '26.

The Choral Christmas Concert was held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, and featured the voices of over 60 young men in four ensembles. The audience was treated to sixteen numbers under the direction of Mr. Mark Norman and accompanied by Mrs. Maryanne Martin. The Combined Ensemble consisting of all the singers performed seven Christmas songs including Little Drummer Boy, Do You Hear What I Hear?, We Need A Little Christmas, and A Holly Jolly Christmas. The Freshman Chorus performed a compilation of three holiday songs and then joined the Advanced Chorus for a rendition of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel arranged by Noah Reese. The Advanced Chorus sang several Christmas and winter classics, including Stopping

By The Woods On A Snowy Evening, the musical version of the famous poem by Robert Frost. The concert concluded with Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.

A SEASON OF GIVING During the month of December, the familiar adage “it is better to give than to receive” was brought to life throughout the La Salle community. More than a saying, it became a shared commitment — one reflected in the time, effort, and compassion poured into three distinct service projects. Together, these initiatives demonstrated that true fulfillment is found in selflessness and in uplifting others.

For more than 25 years, La Salle College High School has provided Christmas presents to oncology and hematology patients at Saint Christopher’s Hospital through its Secret Santa program. One of the school’s largest and longest-running service projects, Secret Santa brings the Miracle of Christmas to families who might not otherwise be able to celebrate. This year, nearly 300 children were served through the collective efforts of the La Salle community.

La Salle families purchased gifts for patients and their siblings, the Mothers’ Club prepared 23 Santa costumes and wrapped and tagged all presents, and the Men of La Salle organized delivery routes spanning two states and twelve counties — from Atlantic County to Carbon County and from Mercer County to Berks County. On the morning of Christmas Eve, more than 100 students delivered presents directly to patients’ homes, while a group of alumni delivered gifts to children hospitalized at Saint Christopher’s who were unable to be home for Christmas.

Two “Giving Trees” were placed outside the auditorium and decorated with hundreds of gift suggestions. Marking the 12th year of this tradition, La Salle families generously donated unwrapped gifts, leaving well over 600 items beneath the trees in the weeks leading up to Christmas. On December 11, 2025, Mr. Rob Johnson and five students from his Digital Media and Communication Concentration Capstone Course delivered more than 50 gifts to La Salle Academy in North Philadelphia, supporting that school’s Christmas Drive for students in grades three through eight. The remaining gifts were delivered on December 18, 2025, to the Boys & Girls Club in Frankford through the efforts of Mr. Joe Parisi, and on December 21, 2025, to six recreation centers across Philadelphia by Mr. Marty Jackson, Coach Brett Gordon ’98, and six members of the State Championship Football Team.

A third Christmas service project was launched this year by Mr. Bill Leahy and Dr. John Scanlon in conjunction with the school’s newest concentration in Leadership. Each of the two leadership classes collected toys for students at Drexel Neumann Academy, a Catholic elementary school in Chester, Pennsylvania. This toy drive served as a real-world example of servant leadership; one of the five leadership theories studied in the course. Together, the classes collected nearly 300 gifts and raised almost $1,000, which was matched by an anonymous donor. The funds were used to purchase a washer, dryer, and supplies for the school. Students delivered the toys to Drexel Neumann Academy on December 10, 2025.

In total, more than 1,500 gifts were donated, benefiting nearly 700 children. Although the three drives took place in the middle of first semester exams and during the busy Christmas season, the students and families of La Salle College High School remained steadfast in their commitment to serving those in need — proving once again that the spirit of giving lies at the heart of the La Salle community.

GOLF The Golf Team was undefeated in league play and finished second at the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship. The following week, they captured their 9th consecutive District 12 (City) Championship at Philmont Country Club and defeated Nazareth Area High School, the District 11 champions, to advance to the Pennsylvania State Championship for the 9th time in ten years.

CROSS COUNTRY The Varsity, JV, and Freshman Cross Country teams all placed first at the Philadelphia Catholic League Championships. The Varsity team went on to win the District 12 (City) Championship and finish third at the PIAA State Championship. They competed as a team in the NXN Regional meet in November with teams from around the tri-state area.

The Football team began and ended their season against the same opponent – Central Catholic High School, the Lasallian school from Pittsburgh. The Explorers won their first four games before a disappointing loss to Roman Catholic in the league opener. La Salle responded with nine consecutive wins, including two over Saint Joseph’s Prep. They captured the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship for the second straight year and routed both Easton Area High School and North Penn High School in the PIAA State Tournament. The victories set-up a rematch with Central Catholic at Cumberland Valley High School on December 6, 2026, for the PIAA 6A State Championship. The Explorers dominated both sides of the ball winning 3420 and capturing their first Pennsylvania State Championship since 2009.

SOCCER The Varsity, JV, and Freshman Cross Country teams all placed first at the Philadelphia Catholic League Championships.

WATER POLO The Water Polo Team got off to a great start. The Explorers played well in several big tournaments, including the Beast of the East. They earned the No. 1 seed in the Pennsylvania State Water Polo Tournament, where they won their first two games against Wissahickon and Souderton, but lost to North Allegheny in the finals to secure a second-place finish in the state.

RUGBY 7s CAPTURES PENNSYLVANIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP The Rugby 7s season was one of the most successful in program history. The Explorers finished 22-4 over the course of six tournaments and capped it all by winning the Pennsylvania Rugby 7s State Championship, the first since 2016.

Rugby 7s demands speed, fitness, and smart decision-making. Although they use the same field and many of the same rules as Rugby 15s, it is a very different game. With more space on the field, preventing mistakes is crucial in 7s and every opportunity matters. The Explorers have high standards on and off the field, as they follow the Lasallian mission every day.

Since the program was established in the spring of 2013 by head coaches Matthew Derrick ’02 (7s) and Jessica Nedzwecky (15s), La Salle Rugby has grown into one of the largest programs in the country. The program shifts to 15s, where the game becomes more physically demanding and more structured.

The 15s focus more on a slower pace of play in the center of the field with big hits, while waiting for the right moment to take advantage of a fatigued defense to play the ball on the wings. With the confidence and momentum gained from the fall, the Explorers enter the spring season with determination for a State championship run in the 15s.

STILL LIVING the Fourth

As the 2025–26 school year comes to an end, the 175th Kairos retreat, and the first retreat for the Class of 2027, returned from America’s Keswick Retreat Center on March 20, 2026. What began as a small group of students and faculty leaders on Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School’s 37th Kairos Retreat has grown over the last 30 years into a distinctly Lasallian program. For many students, Kairos is one of—if not the—most defining experience of their time at La Salle.

Kairos is a three-day, two-night retreat whose name quite literally means “God’s time.” Distinct from everyday life, students and their leaders spend this sacred time with God, reflecting on their relationships with God, with themselves, and with others.

For those who have not experienced the retreat personally, Kairos can be difficult to put into words. Part of this

30 LA SALLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL | WINTER 2026

is because the experience is deeply personal—each retreatant will likely leave with a different favorite moment or new insight. Additionally, the best way for a student to experience Kairos is without prior knowledge or expectations of what will occur. In its early years at La Salle, Kairos was held only a few times each year. As the program has grown, so too has its impact; in the 2025–26 school year alone, seven retreats were held.

While serving as the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, I had the blessing and privilege of serving as the retreat director for Kairos 37–175—a testament to the unwavering support of the Kairos program from Br. James Butler and the administrative team. I can say definitively that the spirit of Kairos is in excellent hands as the program has now been officially passed on to the Class of 2027, the 30th class at La Salle to participate in the Kairos Program.

The true passing of the retreat, however, is lived out in Kairos’ final and most enduring message: Live the Fourth. Simply put, this means carrying everything that has been learned, shared, and reflected upon during Kairos into life after the retreat ends. The “fourth day” represents all the days still to come. Living the Fourth is not merely about returning home happier or feeling more connected to classmates, it is about becoming a better friend and son today, but for one day to be a better husband and a more compassionate, grounded father.

Live the Fourth serves as a three-word embodiment of La Salle’s graduate profile: the spiritual grounding of being a man of faith, service, compassion, justice, integrity, and respect. For the thousands of La Salle men who have made their Kairos retreat, Live the Fourth is both a reminder and a challenge, to take what was experienced on retreat and allow it to shape how they live, love, and lead every day thereafter.

The award recognizes significant professional or volunteer service to the school rendered over a substantial period of the awardee’s life; service that mirrors the generosity of Christian Brothers serving students at La Salle College High School since 1858.

The La Salle community mourns the loss of “Coach Rad.” A man of great faith and character who was a teacher, coach, and mentor to five decades of Explorers. Sadly, he passed away on March 29, 2026, a few weeks after receiving this honor. His presence will be missed at 8605 Cheltenham Avenue and by all of those whom his life and pleasant demeaner impacted.

Tony DePaul has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Drexel Engineering and is a Registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania. A principal of The DePaul Group, Tony served as President of Tony DePaul and Son, a highway and construction company that was founded in the 1940’s and was at the forefront of the construction industry in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. He also ran Highway Materials and TDPS Materials, which consisted of several quarries in the tri-state area that supplied Tony DePaul and Son with resources and construction materials.

A generous supporter of La Salle College High School, Tony is a member of the Anthony J. Drexel Society of Drexel University and has served as a director or trustee on the boards of Drexel University, Pennsylvania Aggregate and Concrete Association, Contractors Association of Eastern Pennsylvania, Laborer's District Council of Philadelphia Pension Fund, and the Laborer's District Council of Philadelphia Health and Welfare Fund.

Joe Hand has spent his career at the intersection of sports, business, and community service. As President of Joe Hand Promotions, the world’s leading distributor of live sports and entertainment to commercial establishments, he has guided the second generation of the family business for more than 35 years.

Under his leadership, the company has grown from a regional distributor into a national force, forging landmark partnerships with ESPN+, UFC, WWE, DIRECTV, Netflix, and others to bring major sporting events to thousands of venues across North America.

He founded the Joe Hand Boxing Gym, a nonprofit that has become a safe haven for youth and a source of empowerment for veterans, breast cancer survivors, children with autism and special needs, and individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. Joe also co-founded the Miracle League of Northampton Township and helped to raise over $1 million to build two adaptive athletic fields. Recognized by the Pennsylvania State Senate and inducted into the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame, Joe exemplifies excellence, generosity, and leadership – values that continue to uplift his community.

MAJ. GEN. RICHARD W. TRAGEMANN, USA(RET.) ’60

Richard “Dick” Tragemann graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and had an Army career spanning 31 illustrious years of ever-increasing responsibility. He served two tours in Vietnam, commanding four different Firing Batteries. Dick served with U.S. forces in Korea and as the 18th Airborne Corps Field Artillery Commanding General during Operation Desert Shield. He attended the U.S. War College and earned a master’s degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. In the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo, Dick served as the U.S. Army Task Force Commanding General in St. Croix, Virgin Islands.

He then commanded the 3rd Cannon Training Battalion in Oklahoma.

After a year at the Pentagon, Dick took command of the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) DIVARTY. He retired in 1996 as a Major General and the Commanding General U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

His military decorations and badges include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal with "V" device and three Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Assault Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, and Ranger Tab.

ARTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION MARCH 22, 2026

La Salle College High School held its 6th annual Arts Hall of Fame induction on March 22, 2026, for individuals bringing distinction to La Salle College High School through their talents as demonstrated in Theater/Performing Arts, Speech and Debate, and Music. They exemplify the characteristics of living the Lasallian mission including leadership, service, and commitment to the community. Four alums were inducted into the Arts Hall of Fame: Richard C. Sayers, PhD ’77, John “Jack” R. Grogan ’15, Conor P. Hogan ’15, and John J. Grace, EdM ’73. A current student, Thomas Hudson Wolpert ’26, was recognized with the Brother René Sterner, FSC Award for his excellence in mock trial, speech, music, and theater. Following the presentations, the cast and crew of Anything Goes treated the attendees to a number from the show.

RICHARD C. SAYERS, PHD ’77 Music, Inducted 2026 Richard Sayers ’77 was one of La Salle’s first “doublers,” playing clarinet, saxophone, and flute.

He also served as president of the band during his junior and senior years. He holds a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America, an M.M. from West Chester University, and a B.A. from La Salle College. Today he is a Professor of Music and a cornerstone of the intellectual and cultural community at Neumann University. As the Coordinator of the University Honors Program, Dr. Sayers mentors high-achieving students. Beyond the classroom, Dr. Sayers is a dedicated advocate for the arts. He serves as the Director of the Neumann University Jazz Band and has served as musical and vocal director for the Neumann University Players.

His influence also extends into the local arts scene as a speaker for the Delaware County Symphony “Meet the Music” pre-concert talks.

JOHN “JACK” R. GROGAN ’15 AND CONOR P. HOGAN ’15 Speech and Debate, Inducted 2026 John “Jack” Grogan ’15 and Conor Hogan ’15 established a legacy of success primarily as policy debaters throughout their time as members of the La Salle Forum. Two-time Pennsylvania State Champions, three-time qualifiers for elimination rounds at the National Catholic Forensics League, and two-time elimination-round qualifiers at the National Debate Coaches Association, they are the only policy debate team in school history to reach the semifinal round of the National Catholic Forensics League, the National Debate Coaches Association, and the National Speech and Debate Association Championships. Their performances helped the Forum capture three consecutive Philadelphia Catholic League Championships, earn two National School of Excellence Awards, and qualify for the Tournament of Champions. Their success across leagues demonstrated extraordinary dedication to their craft – producing more research annually than a master’s thesis. More importantly, they modeled teamwork, compassion, and integrity, setting a lasting example for the Forum members who followed them.

JOHN J. GRACE, EDM ’73 Theater, Inducted 2026 John Grace ’73 starred in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying at La Salle College High School in 1973 and, after joining the faculty, served as an Assistant Producer under Joe Ciccimaro ’57 for over a dozen musical theater performances at the school. He later joined the faculty at Lower Merion High School, where he taught history and social studies. For 25 years, he was the Lower Merion Players’ head coach where he oversaw the school’s renowned “student-run” theater program that meets daily and puts on three major shows annually – a musical, drama, and comedy – along with workshops. He was named the University of Chicago Outstanding Educator based on nominations from his students.

The La Salle community gathered at Normandy Farms Hotel & Conference Center in Blue Bell on February 7, 2026 to honor “Women of Distinction” and celebrated the accomplishments and contributions of women at La Salle College High School. Kathy Caramenico and Pam Grady represented the Mothers’ Club Alumnae who were recognized for the efforts of Shared Treasures.

Senora Lastenia Breen and Cathy Winning were honored for their 25 years of service to the school. The event also celebrated Rita Cooney, Carol Haggerty, and Kathleen Smith who recently retired. Bob and Lauren Farrell were co-chairs and Julia Maher H’14 served as the Honorary Chair.

SNAPSHOTS FROM THE WINTER SCHOLARSHIP RECEPTION JANUARY 8, 2026

La Salle College High School awarded scholarships to 87 eighth grade boys based on their scores from the Scholarship/ Entrance exam administered in October.

The guests were addressed by former scholarship recipients Shane Dominello ’26 and Thomas Wolpert ’26, and were hosted at their table by a current senior as well as a member of the faculty/staff.

DESIGNER BAG BINGO JANUARY 16, 2026

The Mothers’ Club Alumnae held their 9th annual Designer Bag BINGO on January 16, 2026, in the Glaser Center. Over 300 women were in attendance, making it the largest crowd in event history. Chaired by Pam Grady, Kathy Caraminico, Kathy Tavolaro, and Terry Millet, all former members of the Mothers’ Club Board, the event raised over $20,000 and brought together current and past mothers for a true BYOB (besties, bites, and bubbly).

DAY OF LEADERSHIP WITH GWYNEDD MERCY ACADEMY JANUARY 24, 2026

Almost 70 juniors from La Salle College High School joined fellow juniors at Gwynedd Mercy Academy for the 3rd annual Day of Leadership, which fostered leadership, service, and connection within the Class of 2027. Students from Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School and La Salle College High School came together to support Project HOME and Face to Face Germantown while strengthening essential communication skills during their pivotal 11th-grade year, when confidence and real-world readiness truly matter. Through reflection, networking, speed interviews, and product pitch challenges, students gained meaningful, hands-on experience. Thank you to both schools for helping make this collaboration a success for the third year in a row, and better each time.

JANUARY 30, 2026 The student body at La Salle College High School gathered in the Charles “Obie” O’Brien Gymnasium on January 30, 2026 for the school’s annual Jazz Assembly. A tradition that dates back to the early 1990s, faculty, staff, and students were treated to the sounds of six of the school's fifteen performing ensembles: Competition Band, Lab Band One, Lab Band Two, Honors Band, People’s Band, and the R&B Funk and Latin Concepts Ensemble. In total, fourteen different numbers were performed to a very enthusiastic and appreciative audience.

COUNTDOWN TO GRADUATION FEBRUARY 17, 2026

The senior class was treated to special evening on February 16, 2026, as they celebrated 100 days until graduation. The evening began with members of the faculty and staff serving a BBQ dinner in the Glaser Center. The entire class then moved to the auditorium where they were entertained by Michael Gutenplan, a third-generation psychic and master mentalist, who left the seniors utterly amazed. In honor of Saints Joseph’s Day on March 19, 2026, the seniors were treated to a special lunch after Mass: steak, shrimp, Caesar salad, rolls, and chocolate mousse.

WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL FEBRUARY 25, 2026

Students in the capstone course of the Leadership, Public Service, and Law Concentration along with members of the Model UN attended a presentation at the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia – “A Conversation with Former Navy Secretary John Lehman.” The event provided a timely discussion with the Honorable John Lehman, former Secretary of the Navy and a member of the class of 1960, on the future of the U.S. Navy and its role in global affairs. The La Salle students were invited to ask the first questions of the former Secretary and, after the presentation, Dr. Lehman spent time with the students.

FATHER/SON BANQUET MARCH 1, 2026

The 76th annual Father/Son Banquet was held on March 1, 2026, at The Fuge in Warminster. The guest speaker was LTJG Daniel Jordan ’17 and the event was attended by nearly 500 fathers/sons. The Father/Son Banquet is one of the oldest traditions at La Salle and provides some time for fathers and sons to break routines and spend time with each other.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP LUNCH MARCH 9, 2026

The tradition of connecting alums with members of the senior class continued March 9, 2026, as over 70 members of the Class of 2026 gathered in the auditorium for the annual Senior Leadership Luncheon. The event began with class president, Thomas “Tug” Potterjoy ’26, addressing those in attendance with a student reflection. Brendan Meagher ’18, a Private Banking Senior Associate at J.P. Morgan in New York, followed with alumni remarks about his education and current career path. Each table was comprised of students who were leaders in one or more of the various sports and activities at the school along with two alums who shared their own career paths and learned from the students about life at La Salle in 2026.

ANYTHING GOES

MARCH 19-22, 2026 The Theater Department at La Salle College High School staged four performances of Anything Goes, the Tony-winning musical by Cole Porter. Anything Goes is set aboard the ocean liner S.S. American, where nightclub singer/evangelist Reno Sweeney (Grace Balkowski) is en route from New York to England. Her pal Billy Crocker (Elijah Diaz ’27) has stowed away to be near his love, Hope Harcourt (Lucy Thiel), but the problem is Hope is engaged to the wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (Liam McCaffery ’26). Joining this love triangle on board the luxury liner are Public Enemy #13, Moonface Martin (Brendan DeStefano ’26), and his sidekick-in-crime Erma (Jenna Leary). With the help of some elaborate disguises, tap-dancing sailors and good old-fashioned blackmail, Reno and Martin join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope’s heart. The show is famous for its witty dialogue, elaborate dance numbers, and iconic songs like "You're the Top," "I Get a Kick Out of You," and “Anything Goes.”

The cast, which began rehearsing in December, consists of 60 students from La Salle and girls from local high schools. In addition to an outstanding production team and tech/stage crew, the 18-instrument orchestra is comprised entirely of La Salle students and conducted by senior Logan Razler.

WOMEN OF LA SALLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL Women at La Salle College High School date back to the early 1950s when they ruled the library and held various support roles. Jeanne Wallace and Beth Ann Lavish joined the faculty in 1969, and the number of female teachers has risen dramatically through the years. Today, the school has over 30 female faculty members and another 20 women on staff who are an integral part of the day-today operations. They teach the minds and touch the hearts of our students and have made La Salle a better place. During Women’s History Month in March, La Salle College High School thanked and recognized them for their commitment and contribution to the community!

TRACK AND SWIMMING FINISH SECOND IN THE STATE

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD La Salle Track and Field delivered a historic performance at the PTFCA Indoor State Championships, earning a second place overall team finish, the highest placement in program history (the team had won the small school division State Championship when the meet was split in 1981). Competing against the top teams in Pennsylvania, the Explorers rose to the occasion with strong performances across distance, sprints, relays, and field events. The distance squad set the tone as Bobby Franklin ’27 captured the State Championship in the One Mile, running a remarkable 4:16.67 and scoring 10 crucial points for the Explorers. Senior captain James Mahoney ’26 placed 4th in the 400m with a time of 48.98, good for adding 5 points. Later, in the 3000m, Benjamin DiCola ’27 ran 8:46.67 to earn a new PA Top-15 mark and score a valuable point, while Ryan McCabe ’26 finished 9th in 8:50.76.

The Explorers were especially strong in the relays. The Distance Medley Relay team of Matthew Tate ’26, Cole Harbison ’26, Anthony Ukalovic ’26, and Bobby Franklin ’27 placed 2nd overall in 10:20.18. The 4x400m relay team of Aidan Christy ’26, Michael Gorrell ’26, Louie Burdick ’26, and Jimmy Mahoney ’26 ran 3:20.91 to finish 4th overall. In the field events, Sawyer Roman ’27 cleared 6’5” in the High Jump to earn a Top 10 finish.

When the results were announced, La Salle stood proudly in second place overall, the best Indoor State finish in school history.

Congratulations to all our state competitors on an unforgettable milestone for La Salle Track and Field, and a successful season that included a Philadelphia Catholic League Championship.

BASKETBALL The Basketball team earned a berth in the Philadelphia Catholic League Playoffs for the second consecutive year. Led by returning varsity players, Max Okebata ’27 and Nick Neri c the Explorers found themselves growing together as a team throughout the campaign. Okebata had a standout season, earning Third Team All-Philadelphia Catholic League honors, leading the league in deflections and showing his ability to contribute on both ends of the floor, while Neri offered a steady hand while also finishing in the Top 5 in offensive rebounds per game. Leading the way offensively was newcomer Tyler Branson ’27, who established himself as one of the league's top point guards, finishing in the Top 10 in points, assists, and steals. His ability to impact the game in multiple facets made him the clear centerpiece of the Explorers' line-up.

BOWLING The Bowling team finished 5th in the league. They played Archbishop Wood in the PCL Semifinals, but the Explorers’ season came to an unfortunate end. Led by Joe Ramsey, who is in his 10th year of coaching, two of the juniors on the team were All-Catholic selections.

SWIMMING AND DIVING The Swimming and Diving team finished the season undefeated in Philadelphia Catholic League dual meets and won out-of-conference meets against Christian Brothers Academy (NJ) and Salesianum (DE). The squad also won the 50th Wilson Relays. Along the way, the team broke four pool records during Philadelphia Catholic League dual meets. In February, the Explorers captured their 39th consecutive Philadelphia Catholic League title and 18th consecutive District 12 (City) Championship. In addition, Joey Curcio ’27 broke the PCL, District 12, and team record in the 100-yard backstroke, formerly held

by Vince Everman '15. In March, the team traveled to Bucknell University where it finished second in the PIAA State Championship for the second consecutive year, narrowly losing to North Allegheny High School from western Pennsylvania.

ICE HOCKEY The Ice Hockey Program consists of four teams (Varsity AAA, JV AAA, JV A Blue, and JV A Gold) and has over 80 student athletes. In a rebuilding year, the Explorers finished the season with a record of 8-14 but played their best hockey at the end of the year.

They entered Flyers Cup play as the No. 3 seed and defeated Father Judge 6-2 in the quarterfinals and Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School 4-1 in the semifinals. The back-to-playoff wins set up a rematch of last year’s Flyers Cup Championship. Despite it being Saint Patrick’s Day, the Explorers had no luck as they lost to Holy Ghost Prep 3-2 in a hard-fought game that was decided when the Firebirds scored a power play goal with 2:50 remaining in the contest.

SQUASH The Squash team returned for its 10th season and a hefty 19-game schedule in the MASA league. A total of 40 students participated in the fall clinics, and the Explorers fielded a varsity team of 12 players (1 Senior, 6 Juniors, 5 Sophomores). La Salle finished second in the 2nd annual MASA Tournament in December and placed runner-up in its respective division. Even though the season ended with a 9-10 record, it was a successful rebuilding year with eleven varsity players returning next year.

WRESTLING The Wrestling team had a successful season, highlighted by strong competitive results and continued growth in student participation and development. This year, the team finished as the District 12 runner-up and qualified for the PIAA Team Championships for the sixth consecutive season, reflecting the program’s consistency at the district and state level.

There were over 50 student athletes on the team with 34 of them earning varsity mat time. Eight of the thirteen regular varsity starters earned All-Catholic honors and six wrestlers placed at the District 12 Championships and advanced to the Regional Tournament. Junior captains Cole Trzeciak and Cooper Helm both qualified for the PIAA State Championships.

BEYOND THE NUTS AND BOLTS

La Salle College High School offers a plethora of teams, clubs, and activities through which students can build lasting bonds, gain real-world skills, and compete at the highest levels of competition. Even at the high standard that La Salle sets for its students, its robotics team – Explorer Robotics (FRC 5181) – manages to stand out as an exemplary model of Lasallian virtue and collaboration.

The program was initially spearheaded through the efforts of Mr. Ryan McDowell ’01. For thirteen years, Explorer Robotics has participated in FIRST Robotics Competition.

Organized by the non-profit organization FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), La Salle participates in a youth robotics program where teams must create robots that are able to adapt to the challenges set by each year’s game, which is designed around a specific educational idea. In this year’s game, REBUILT, themed around archaeology and excavation, robots must be able to collect “fuel” – high-density yellow foam balls – and dispense them into their alliance Hub, with other optional challenges intertwined into gameplay.

Gameplay is split into two segments: an autonomous period, where robots follow pre-programmed instructions, and a teleoperated period, where students control these robots to score as many points as possible. Each year’s game is deeply themed around what FIRST calls “coopertition”, which emphasizes a mix of collaboration

and competition, and “gracious professionalism,” which embraces positive competition and respect for other teams.

Teams must work together in alliances of three – randomly chosen each qualification match or selected based on team ranking in playoffs – prompting these values which are essential to the FIRST ethos.

Over a six-week period from initial planning to competition at district events, Explorer Robotics utilizes a coordinated sub-team structure to create the team’s robot for each game. Whether they are interested in mechanics, programming, photography, or business, every student has a place where they can use their unique skills and passions to support the team. Like the cogs in a machine, each subteam’s contributions are essential to prompting the team’s success.

The mechanical sub-team, led by Ben Citro ’27, kicks off its role as soon as each year’s game is revealed. Using Fusion 360 CAD Software, this sub-team is tasked with designing a robot that can adapt to the challenges presented by each year’s game, based on the team’s consensus of important robot aspects. Afterwards, this sub-team uses the CAD model of the robot to craft its real-world counterpart through the use of tools found in the robotics shop alongside 3D-printed materials. The mechanical team is essential to creating a competition-ready, durable

robot that can withstand the trials it will face on game day.

Faculty members, Mr. Vish Patel, Mr. Pat Rose ’99, and Mr. Craig Fox ’19, along with parent volunteers, Mr. Ravindran Mariathasan (P’24, P’27) and Mr. Roy Landes (P’19, P’23), are the teachers and mentors who aid the student’s design process and tool use.

After the mechanical team creates a competition-ready robot, it is the job of the software sub-team, led by Gabe Kuzowsky ’27, to create code that allows the robot to complete the required tasks necessary during competition.

This sub-team utilizes the Java coding language to program the various functions of the robot. In addition, the team also creates the code that the robot will follow during the game’s autonomous period, using the PathPlanner software to create accurate robot paths. A student from this sub-team is also selected to be the technician on game day, ensuring that any technical problems can be quickly remedied. The software sub-team is critical in ensuring the link between student drivers and the physical aspects of the robot and facilitating an efficient and productive robot.

Mr. Craig Fox ’19, Mr. Jason Soley (P’23), and Mr. Jack Swift are the mentors of this sub-team and aid in designing and employing the logistics needed to code a complex machine.

While the mechanical and software sub-teams provide a robot that is ready to withstand the trials of an FRC event, it is the strategy sub-team, led by Andrew Perry ’27, that carries out the team’s success on game day. Three members of this sub-team – a driver, an operator, and a drive coach – are chosen to control the robot during each match, competing alongside other teams to ensure the highest ranking possible. In addition, the strategy team undergoes a process known as scouting to determine the capabilities of other teams so that, when alliance selection begins, the team can select partners which provide synergy and support its weaknesses. The strategy sub-team provides the essential support needed on the day of competition for the team to achieve effective results. The mentors for this team, Mr. Brendan Burke (P’07) and Mr. Jack Henry ’17, assist with data management.

While these three sub-teams work together to create and operate a competitive robot, there are other options available for students to use their skills to contribute to the team. The public relations sub-team, led by Colin O’Curran ’27, provides a way for students interested in photography, media management, or writing to utilize their skills to support the team. This team handles Explorer

Robotics’s public presence from managing the team’s social media accounts, to writing articles showcasing the team’s performance, to taking photographs and videos at competitions for marketing. The public relations team is critical to ensure that Explorer Robotics maintains a positive community presence. In addition, they are responsible for managing the team’s imagery, including shirt and pit design as well as unique activities held by the team at events, allowing the team to connect its mission to the core aspects of each year’s game. The mentors for this sub-team are Mrs. Katie Burke (P’07), Mr. Brian Perry (P’24, P’27), and Mrs. Allison Bell (P’28), all of whom assist in bringing the team’s imagery to life and coordinating its unique activities, such as this year’s scavenger hunt that other competition attendees can participate in.

A business sub-team, led by Tyler Romano ’26, provides ways for business-oriented students to fully participate in the robotics team. The business team’s main role is coordinating relationships with sponsors. Given the significant costs associated with the competitions,

purchasing parts and tools, and travel (particularly to world championships if the team qualifies), sponsors and financial support are essential. The business sub-team is also responsible for managing the program’s finances and maintaining its budget; therefore, ensuring fiscal stability.

Mr. Bill Bell ’94 (P’28) and Mr. John Ceccola ’93 are the business sub-team’s mentors and help with coordinating relationships with sponsors.

The final sub-team is responsible for outreach and is led

by William Hartzel ’26. In contrast to the responsibilities of other sub-teams, the outreach team primarily operates outside of the game season, as its main responsibility is coordinating service opportunities and running events through which others in the community can obtain knowledge of STEM skills and be prepared for the future!

The outreach team is responsible for coordinating the team’s yearly FLL Skirmish for middle school students, which is held on the same day as FRC kickoff. In addition, they coordinate a STEM Camp held each summer that focusses on various scientific topics. The outreach team

also holds robot demonstrations at community spaces such as the Springfield Library as well as at the locations of the team’s sponsors. Through this sub-team’s efforts, the mission of Explorer Robotics – to foster STEM education in the wider community – is fulfilled.

Explorer Robotics provides a variety of opportunities for La Salle College High School students to immerse themselves in the fields of mechanics, programming, strategy, media, and business. Through the collaboration of each sub-team, the team is able to support its mission

and provide a powerful educational experience for every member. More importantly, students are prepared for challenges in college and beyond. The robotics team stands out as a core model for collaboration, competition, and community, even amongst the high standards set by the many activities La Salle offers.

EXPLORER ROBOTICS FINISHES IN THE TOP 10 AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Explorer Robotics (FRC Team 5181) competed at the World Championship in Houston, TX from April 29, 2026 through May 2, 2026. Following a strong performance in district events, 5181 was selected as one of 500 teams to advance to the world championships, which are split into eight divisions, each with 75 teams.

Throughout qualifications, 5181 played effective defense and was successful in debilitating the offensive capabilities of its opposition, often preventing alliances from scoring hundreds of points. As a result, 5181 was able to shine and set itself apart from the competition as one of, if not the strongest, support robots.

Playoff alliances were selected beginning the day-long competition that would set the bracket for the championship division.

Due to its effective defense, feeding, and support skills, Explorer Robotics was selected for playoffs on the world level, becoming part of Alliance 1 alongside The CREW (FRC 7769 from Oakland Schools Technical Campus Southeast in Royal Oak, MI), Orbit (FRC 1690 from Atid Cramim Binyamina High School in Binyamina, HaZafon, Israel), and the Balikbayan Bots (FRC 8229, a community team from Las Vegas, NV).

In the playoffs, 5181 excelled in its role as a powerful defensive and support-oriented robot, greatly reducing the scoring potential of opposing alliances and facilitating Alliance 1 in its undefeated performance in the playoffs. In the finals, Alliance 1 defeated Alliance 7 in a best-of-three match and punched their ticket to the championship division.

5181’s appearance at the championship saw the team claim incredible success, advancing to the semifinals before losing to the Newton Alliance. Despite this exit, Explorer Robotics vastly exceeded expectations, setting itself apart from the competition and illustrating the vast potential within the program.

by Reverend Bernie Farley and continued with dinner in the Charles “Obie” O’Brien Gymnasium, during which the boys read a poem by alumnae mother, Maureen Hope, to their mothers as they presented them with a yellow rose. The mothers then read a poem to their sons. Brother James Butler, FSC provided his remarks and the evening concluded with a slide show of the class beginning with their arrival on campus in the fall of 2022.

FSC WEEK - CELEBRATING LA SALLE'S MISSION APRIL 20-24, 2026

FSC Week is a celebration of our Lasallian heritage and core values of faith, service, and community. As a school community, La Salle celebrated these values with different activities. Monday, April 20, 2026 focused on the core value of Faith in the Presence of God with a Communion Service and religion teachers highlighted the Five Core Principles in their classes. Tuesday, April 21, 2026 focused on the core value of quality education as the Ministry and Service Team served breakfast featuring homemade waffles and more for faculty and staff. Wednesday, April 22, 2026 focused on the core value of concern for the poor and social justice. Project Snack Bag, a collection of food items for those in need, took place throughout the week.

In addition, the Catholic Social teaching of “care for God’s creation” was discussed since April 22nd is Earth Day. Thursday, April 23, 2026 focused on the core value of respect for all people as the student body recognized our amazing food service and housekeeping staff. Friday, April 24, 2026 focused on the core value of inclusive community with the annual Field Day. Throughout the week, the morning prayer and La Salle’s social media platforms highlighted our Lasallian Mission.

BUSINESS NETWORK HAPPY HOUR APRIL 22, 2026

The Alumni Association hosted a Business Network Happy Hour on April 22, 2026 at the Great American Pub in Conshohocken, PA. Attended by alumni from six different decades, the event provided an opportunity for alums to socialize, network, and watch the Flyers take on the cross-state rival Penguins in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION APRIL 23, 2026

On April 23, 2026, 82 young men (78 juniors and four seniors) were inducted into the De La Salle Chapter of the National Honor Society at a ceremony in the auditorium. Selection for membership requires that the student maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.80, achieve a final grade no lower than a B- in any class, have a record of good conduct, demonstrate leadership, and participate in service activities and in an acceptable number of extra-curricular activities within the school community as well as the community at large. The student must also exhibit positive qualities and attitudes of responsibility, honesty, reliability, cooperation, and concern for others. Founded in 1921, the National Honor Society (NHS) is one of the nation’s most prestigious student organizations, established to honor high school students who demonstrate not only academic excellence but also a commitment to serving their school and community. FIELD DAY

APRIL 24, 2026 The weather was perfect for Field Day on April 24, 2026, as homerooms competed against each other in over three dozen events. The day featured spirited competition, notable sportsmanship, and a campus filled with smiles and laughs. The winning homeroom was determined by a giant obstacle course that took its toll on many a competitor in search of that ultimate prize – bragging rights.

MUSIC FILLS THE AIR

APRIL 27, 2026 AND MAY 5, 2026 The Music Department at La Salle College High School performed their annual Band and Orchestra Concert on April 27, 2026. Over 500 people attended the concert, which featured seven different ensembles performing 12 numbers. The Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. Chris Mele ’13, performed Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Score. The String Orchestra performed Viola Concerto in G Major by Georg Philipp Telemann and Symphony No. 9 by Antonin Dvorak. The Woodwind Ensemble, a group unique to La Salle composed of eight musicians playing 25 instruments, performed Movie Music, an original arrangement by Steve Lyon ’02. The Guitar Ensemble performed Hotel California, the classic hit from The Eagles along with Everlong from the Foo Fighters. The Freshman Band and People’s Band each performed two numbers and the concert concluded with the Honors Advanced Band performing Wise Up and Feels So Good, a 70's hit composed by Chuck Mangione that reached the top of the Billboard adult contemporary chart.

The Choral Concert was held on May 5, 2026 and featured the voices of nearly 60 young men in four ensembles. The audience was treated to 16 numbers under the direction of Mr. Mark Norman and accompanied by Mrs. Maryanne Martin. The Freshman Chorus performed Loch Lomond, a traditional Scottish folk song. The Advanced Chorus sang several numbers, including God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, Stay Gold from the Tony Award-winning musical The Outsiders, In Time Of Silver Rain, and The Parting Glass, a traditional Irish folk song recorded by The O’Neill Brothers Group. The Combined Chorus performed several numbers, including Dear Theodosia from Hamilton, the Bobby Darin hit Beyond The Sea, Elton John’s I’m Still Standing, In My Life by the Beatles, and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You made famous by Franki Valli and the Four Seasons. Both concerts featured several “solo” performances.

APRIL 17, 2026 AND APRIL 25, 2026 The Junior Prom was held at Franklin Commons in Phoenixville, PA on April 17, 2026. The Senior Prom was held the following weekend on April 25, 2026 at The Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill, PA. Over 500 gentlemen, along with their dates, attended and enjoyed evenings filled with food, dancing, great music, and good times shared by friends and classmates.

ARTS FESTIVAL MAY 4-8, 2026

La Salle College High School held its 43rd Annual Arts Festival from May 4-8, 2026, during which the Art Department exhibited over 400 pieces of student artwork throughout the school. Over 90% of the students who took an art class had at least one piece of artwork included in the exhibition, which ranged from ceramics and sculptures to drawings and paintings. The student artwork was critiqued by judges and awards were given to pieces that displayed excellence. Several students received Awards of Excellence for pieces of artwork they produced in class, and a few received a “Body of Work” Award, which recognizes the quality and quantity of work that a student has produced.

OWEN SCHUGSTA NAMED DISTINGUISHED LASALLIAN EDUCATOR-OF-THE-YEAR Owen Schugsta, Chair of the Religion Department, has been named the school’s Distinguished Lasallian Educator-Of-The-Year. This recognition honors a faculty member whose life and work exemplify the charism of Saint John Baptist de La Salle – a commitment to faith, service, and community that animates every aspect of La Salle’s mission. Mr. Schugsta has served in Lasallian education for 15 years, including 12 years at La Salle College High School. A dynamic and faith-filled educator, he is recognized not only for his deep theological knowledge and classroom excellence but also for the compassionate leadership and humble service that define his vocation. As Chair of the Religion Department, Mr. Schugsta has guided a curriculum rooted in Catholic social teaching and Lasallian spirituality, helping young men discern meaning, purpose, and faith in their daily lives. Beyond his classroom responsibilities, Mr. Schugsta embodies servant leadership. He has been an active member of the Philadelphia Area Lasallian Ministries (PALM), a leader in the school’s Lasallian Mission Assessment Process (LMAP), and a constant presence in formation, service, and retreat programs. Whether coordinating Kairos retreats, mentoring colleagues, or quietly offering rides to staff members after school, Mr. Schugsta’s actions reveal a profound respect for the dignity of every person. In receiving this honor, Mr. Schugsta joins a distinguished line of educators across the District of Eastern North America (DENA) who have made outstanding contributions to the Lasallian mission. His life and work continue to “build sacred bridges,” reflecting this year’s theme for Lasallian educators, and inspiring all who share in the ministry of transforming lives through faith and education.

SEVERAL SPORTS HAVE “WEEKENDS TO REMEMBER”

TENNIS The Tennis Team finished with an overall record of 8-5 losing to Devon Prep in the semifinals of the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship. Alex Patenko ’26 and Rayan Majumdar ’27 represented La Salle in the PIAA District 12 Singles Tournament, and Chase Donohue ’26, Sean Brennan ’26, Chris Stimmler ’27, and Dmytri Sandursky ’29 represented La Salle in the District 12 Doubles Tournament. Rayan Majumdar received All-Catholic recognition as did the Doubles Team of Chase Donohue and Sean Brennan.

LACROSSE DOMINATES PIAA COMPETITION AND CAPTURES STATE CHAMPIONSHIP The Lacrosse Team went undefeated in the Philadelphia Catholic League and finished the regular season with a record of 18-3 that included wins over the No. 5 ranked team in the country, Saint Anthony's from Long Island, along with wins over perennial powerhouses IMG Academy (FL) and Don Bosco Prep (NJ). The team’s only losses were against three of the best teams in the nation – The Lawrenceville School (No. 3), Malvern Prep (No. 4), and Saint John’s College High School in Washington, DC (No. 15). The team had 14 players receive All-Catholic recognition, six players selected to the All-State Team, and four players named as USA All-Americans. The Explorers captured their 10th consecutive Philadelphia Catholic League and District 12 (City) Championships on May 21, 2026, with a 14-5 win over Saint Joseph’s Prep at Arcadia University. They won the first three games of the PIAA State Tournament in convincing fashion over District 1 opponents: Spring-Ford (15-1), Ridley (11-5), and the defending State Champions from Springfield Delco (12-4). In the Pennsylvania State Championship game held on June 13, 2026, at Panzer Stadium on the campus of Penn State University, the Explorers faced Radnor who had won State titles four of the last five years. La Salle scored the first three goals, but Radnor roared back and lead 4-3 at the end of the first quarter. Sophomore Mason Smith, who set a school record with eight goals in the win over Ridley, tied the game and Senior Will Trymbiski scored the second of his five goals to give the Explorers a lead they would never relinquish as they won 16-9 and captured their first State title since 2019. The team included 15 players who have committed to play at the collegiate level: Duke, Ohio State (2), Loyola, Hofstra, Drexel (3), Cornell, Notre Dame, Delaware, Jacksonville, Franklin and Marshall, Mount Saint Mary’s, and Catholic University.

BASEBALL The Baseball Team finished the regular season with an overall record of 18-2 and 11-1 in the Philadelphia Catholic League, earning the No. 1 seed for the Catholic League Tournament. Six players earned AllCatholic honors and Kyle Werman was named Coach-Of-The-Year.

Following playoff wins over Cardinal O’Hara and Neumann-Goretti, the Explorers defeated Conwell-Egan by a score of 7-6 on May 22, 2026 to win their fifth Philadelphia Catholic League Championship in the last eight seasons. The following week, they shut out Central High School 10-0 to win the District 12 (City) Championship and advance to the PIAA State Tournament. The Explorers won 20 consecutive games, including a first round 11-0 victory over Pennridge High School in the opening round of the State playoffs.

They were defeated by Neshaminy in the quarterfinal game and finished the season with an overall record of 20-3.

CLAY TARGETTING The Trap Team competes in the Pennsylvania State High School Clay Target League, participating in both the fall and spring seasons. In this virtual competition format, student athletes compete weekly at their home facility — Flourtown Sandy Run Sportsmen’s Association — while scores are submitted and ranked against programs from across Pennsylvania. Each season consisted of five weeks of competition, during which athletes demonstrated consistency, discipline, and sportsmanship.

During the 2025–2026 academic year, the team was comprised of 41 dedicated student athletes, reflecting both strong participation and continued growth of the program. A total of 23 team members competed in the State Championship on May 31, 2026, a testament to the team’s commitment and performance throughout the season. Varsity Letters were awarded to athletes who earned placement within the Top 25 competitors in at least three of the five competition weeks — an honor that recognizes sustained excellence and competitive achievement.

TWO CREWS CAPTURE GOLD AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA Crew opened the fall season, placing first in the Ocean City Chase, Kings Head, and Frostbite Regattas as well as earning a guaranteed entry into the 2026 Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. In addition, the program welcomed the Saint Joseph’s College boys from Galway, Ireland who graciously hosted La Salle during a 2025 trip the Tribesmen's Head Regatta. La Salle rowers proved formidable during the Flick season, taking gold ten times, silver eight times over four Flicks, and winning the Manny Flick Point Trophy for a school record fourth consecutive year. The Lightweight 4 did not lose a single Flick race and earned gold, becoming City Champions.

The Varsity 4, JV8, and Varsity 2 all took silver. As a result of their performance at the City Championships, the Varsity 4, Varsity Lightweight 4, JV8, and Freshmen 8 secured automatic qualifying bids to the National Championship Regatta in Tennessee. At the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the Lightweight 4 earned silver to a Canadian crew and the Varsity 4 earned bronze.

The crews traveled to the SRAA Scholastic National Championship Regatta on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, TN, where all four of our boats advanced through the heats and semis into the finals. The Varsity 4 and Lightweight 4 were both victorious and named National Champions – marking the program’s fourth National Championship Crew since 2023.

RUGBY The Rugby 15s Program began their season with pre-season games in early March, despite the difficulties of late winter snowfall and extremely cold temperatures. The Varsity Gold Team went 3-2 in league play and made it to the semifinals of the State Tournament after two seasons of missing the playoffs. The team finished third in RugbyPA. The U16 team once again made the playoffs after missing out last season, ultimately finishing in second place in the State Championship in a hard-fought match against Doylestown Rugby Club. In addition to a successful regular season of competition, Varsity Gold and Blue – 44 players and their families – participated in the Portugal Rugby Youth Festival in Lisbon, Portugal over Spring Break. The team faced opponents from Portugal, England, Spain, and Canada, along with a friendly match against a local club team that has been in existence for almost 100 years. The program consisted of over 100 players, and several players plan to continue their playing careers at the collegiate level.

TRACK AND FIELD CAPTURES THE FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN PROGRAM HISTORY The Track and Field Team concluded a successful season in historic fashion by winning the PIAA State Championship held over Memorial Day weekend at Shippensburg University. The Explorers won the final race of the event, the 4x400m relay, to edge Grove City Area High School by half a point (33 to 32.5 points). They finished 5th in the 4x800m relay, and several runners placed and earned points including Bobby Franklin ’27 who finished 5th in the 1600m run and Jimmy Mahoney ’26 who won the 400m and finished 5th in the 200m.

Mahoney, who was named MVP of the meet, ran a 47.07 to anchor the 4x400m relay team and capture the first State Championship in program history.

The Explorers captured their 11th consecutive Philadelphia Catholic League Track and Field Championship on May 9, 2026 with 174 team points (Saint Joseph’s Prep – 785, Roman Catholic – 59, and Father Judge – 51) as Jim Mahoney won the 200m and Bobby Franklin, who was named Co-MVP of the meet, won both the 800m and Mile races. Juniorv Greg Hock won the 3200m and the 4x800m relay team finished first. The following week, they won the District 12 (City) Championship. During the season, several school records were broken including a 9:58.8 in the Distance Medal Relay at the Penn Relays, Bobby Franklin’s new 800m record, and Jimmy Mahoney running 21.49 in the 200m to break a record set 59 years ago by John Gorman ’67.

VOLLEYBALL The Volleyball Team had another successful season. The program had over 30 student-athletes involved, with teams at the Varsity and JV levels. Lead by seniors Tony Hunt, Will Code, Christian Taylor, Ryan Scheffey, and Dom Tutino, the Explorers finished with an overall record of 15-6, including a perfect 10-0 record in the Philadelphia Catholic League. In Catholic League play, the Explorers only lost one set, which occurred in the semi-final match. The Explorers captured the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship with a 3-0 win over Lansdale Catholic on May 20, 2026. Their season came to an end the following week as they were defeated by Northeast High School in the District 12 (City) Championship.

Each attendee was able to choose one break-out session led by three alumni in that industry or field of business. At the conclusion of the break-out sessions, the Alumni Association hosted a reception, which provided alumni an opportunity to network. JUST A KID FROM KENSINGTON RICK DIBELLA ’71

CLASS OF 1971 If you ask Rick DiBella ’71, a Hall of Fame inductee and former member of the Board of Trustees, to describe his time on campus, he’ll likely call it unremarkable.

His yearbook lists him simply as a four-year intramural participant, a member of the newspaper for three years and the Spanish Club for one. But in the same breath, DiBella will tell you that if he could revisit any four years of his life, it would be the ones he spent on the hill just off Cheltenham Avenue.

“I loved going to that school,” DiBella said. “My freshman year when I played intramural basketball, I realized it was open on Saturdays, so I used to go there on Saturdays, maybe three out of four a month and just hang out. There’s a saying that a man's village is his peace of mind. That school was my peace of mind.”

After departing from the Wyndmoor campus, DiBella attended La Salle University, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting before obtaining his CPA and later an MBA from Temple University. His career began in public accounting, but it was the homebuilding industry where he would ultimately make his mark.

DiBella spent 14 years with Weyerhaeuser in Philadelphia before moving to Northern Virginia to join Pulte Homes, one of the country’s premier residential builders. Over time, he rose through the ranks and eventually became East Region President, overseeing a division responsible for more than $5 billion in annual revenue and more than 20 operating divisions along the East Coast.

DiBella often describes himself as “just a kid from Kensington,” a neighborhood known for its blue-collar work ethic and tight-knit community. That background, he says, shaped both his career path and his passion for the homebuilding industry.

“I don’t think I was a workaholic, but I did work a lot of hours, and it was really just out of the passion and the love for the business,” he said. “The Kensington of my youth was full of proud people — very common people. And when you're in the homebuilding business the people who build your homes are very similar. They have great work ethic. They have great pride in their work.”

Though he began his career on the finance side, an unexpected opportunity changed the trajectory of his professional life. Early in his tenure at Weyerhaeuser, a company president encouraged him to step outside his comfort zone and move into sales and marketing. That leap eventually led him into land acquisition, operations, and executive leadership roles that defined the remainder of his career.

Today, DiBella lives in Vienna, VA and serves as managing partner at PHD Associates, a company that develops largescale residential communities for national homebuilders.

The values instilled during those formative years—service, generosity, and care for others — continue to guide DiBella today, particularly in the way he gives back to the La Salle community. In recent years, DiBella has quietly launched a program that has had an immediate impact. Each year, working with the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid Mike McCabe ‘08, DiBella identifies incoming students who cannot afford the technology required for school and provides them with access to the tools they need to succeed. Over the past five years, he has committed $30,000 annually to the effort and has donated nearly 125 laptops.

The initiative reflects the same belief that has guided both his career and his philanthropy: that investing in people and communities creates lasting impact. That spirit of generosity, DiBella says, was ingrained in him during his days at La Salle and extend beyond academics or career preparation. They are about values, culture, and the way one treats others.

Rick DiBella’s generosity has been transformational. The Office of Institutional Advancement is currently working to endow the program so no student is without technology and/or tools needed to succeed. The program is in need of additional donors who are looking to have an immediate impact on students at La Salle College High School.

Donations would primarily be used to provide laptops and other technology as well as sustain an effort that has had a profound effect on the academic success of hundreds of students. TRUSTING WHAT HE KNOWS RON GUERRA ’76

CLASS OF 1976 Ron Guerra built a distinguished 45-year career in information technology sales, but he will tell you the foundation for that success was laid long before his first sales call at IBM. Growing up in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, he took the bus to La Salle, where he embraced the opportunities the school provided through the Christian Brothers, teachers, coaches, classmates, and enduring sense of community.

"I don't know how my life would have turned out if I didn't go to La Salle," Guerra said.

The education that Guerra received at La Salle was instrumental in his success at Drexel University where he earned Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Engineering.

Although always strong in math and science, reading and writing at La Salle was the competitive advantage he enjoyed in college, and later in his professional career.

Outside the classroom, football coach Tex Flannery took a special interest in Guerra. After football season, Flannery helped Guerra secure a job at Williamson’s Restaurant and Catering, where friendships formed more than 50 years ago still endure today.

With fondness, he recalls the words, “Boys will be Boys but La Salle Boys will be Gentlemen.”

Those lessons carried directly into Guerra’s career in technology, where he rose to the level of Vice President while helping clients navigate decades of enterprise technology transformation — from early networking infrastructure to cybersecurity and cloud computing.

Following the acquisition of his company by Converge Technology Solutions in 2018, he continued serving clients as a Principal Account Executive before closing out his career in June 2025.

"I always wanted to stay technical," he said, "but I also had to understand the business and financial side of the customer,” said Guerra. Respect for people and the importance of relationships – customers, vendors, partners, and colleagues – was something he traced back to La Salle.

Some of his favorite memories over the years are from friendships forged across neighborhoods and across the city that the La Salle community spans. He enjoys seeing alumni at Mass, on the golf course, at the Jersey shore, and other social events.

"Words can't describe it," Guerra said. "When someone is sick, when someone dies, I draw a lot of comfort knowing that the La Salle community is there.”

That sense of gratitude led Guerra to serve two three-year terms on the La Salle Board of Trustees, where he gained

a deeper appreciation for the dedication of the school’s faculty and administration.

"The common theme," he said, "is that we all love La Salle and we want to do whatever we can to make it the best it can be."

His wife, Karen, shares that same commitment to the school community. She chaired the annual La Salle auction and later led the 180 Degree Fund after founder Francie Kent passed the baton. Their family’s connection to La Salle deepened further when their son graduated in 2010.

"It's a special place," Guerra said. "I saw that as a student.

I saw it again as a parent. And I saw it differently still as a trustee."

Now retired, Guerra enjoys Ocean City, NJ and spending winters in Naples, FL. He still thinks about what he would tell a freshman standing at the beginning of it all.

"Get involved. Take it all in. You cannot imagine today what this place is going to mean to you in the future."

Recently, on April 15, 2026, Guerra stood on the 157-yard 17th hole at Forrest Glen Golf and Country Club in Naples, struck a hybrid, and watched the ball drop into the cup for his third career hole-in-one. His playing partners weren't sure it went in. Guerra was. Fifty years after taking the bus from Germantown, he still trusts what he knows and continues to seize the opportunity to support his alma mater.

NEVER STOPPED LEARNING TOM O’BRIEN ’81

CLASS OF 1981 Tom O’Brien always felt an attachment to running as it taught him to stay focused and to never give up. It’s a motto he used in other aspects of his life that brought him great success.

At first, O’Brien aspired to try out for the La Salle hockey team. However, since “size” was not in his favor, he joined the cross country and track teams, which changed his life forever.

“I had not been a runner when I went to La Salle,” said O’Brien, who grew up in Northeast Philadelphia. “I actually thought I was going to play on the hockey team, but I wasn't big enough, so I wasn't going to make the hockey team.”

It was through track that he found his athletic passion.

O’Brien was a distance runner, who specialized in the 2 Mile Run. He and his teammates (Dave Ott ’81, Tom Fitzpatrick ’82, and Steve Gallagher ’83) set a record in the 4x1600 relay that stood for over 30 years. In true Lasallian fashion, O’Brien said that they were able to speak to the young men who broke their record and congratulate them on their success.

On the track is where he met his mentor, Mr. Patrick Devine.

He said he learned many lessons from Coach Devine that helped make him a better and more resilient person.

Devine created a culture of support and friendship that has impacted O’Brien to this day. He also found inspiration from Mr. Bob Russell, a Physics teacher, who also created time for La Salle students to learn about computers. In the 1980’s, computer classes looked a little different as many teachers were learning about computer programming on the fly.

O’Brien said that seeing Mr. Russell struggle through learning and finding new ways to solve problems helped him become a lifelong learner.

O’Brien praised the faculty at La Salle for not only providing a strong educational foundation, but they also helped him think for himself, built his confidence, and gave him chances to make friends for life.

After high school, O’Brien went to the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating from Penn, Tom lived in New York, where he met his wife, Jennifer. They moved to Toronto where Jennifer finished school. Eventually, the family settled in Delaware with Tom working for Chase Bank, while Jennifer became a teacher.

In 2021, Tom retired after 27 years from JPMorgan Chase, most recently as Managing Director of Strategic Merchant

Relationships. He currently keeps busy by volunteering, consulting non-profits, and traveling with Jennifer. He serves on the boards of several organizations, namely the ACLU of Delaware board. He serves as the Treasurer of the ACLU Foundation and chair of the finance committee.

He's also currently on the board of Compass Pro Bono Philadelphia and was on the Delaware board of the National MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Society for over 15 years.

“There were certainly challenging times in between having a career, marriage, and raising two kids, but when you have those challenges I kind of learned from my parents and La Salle to maintain focus on what’s important and to put in the hard work,” O’Brien said. “Going back to my track coach, there’s nothing that is going to make you a better runner or a better person if you’re not going to put the work in on it. That helped me through a lot of ups and downs.”

O’Brien has run marathons and cycles quite regularly. He remains competitive by biking in a few “Century” (100 mile) rides each year and participating in a major fundraiser for the National MS Society. His message to current La Salle students is simple. “Stay open to new opportunities and never stop learning,” he said. “Do the best you can to stay in touch with your classmates.”

ENDURING COMMITMENT BILL MATTHEWS ’86

CLASS OF 1986 “Getting to attend La Salle was God answering a prayer.”

For Bill Matthews, Class of 1986, the opportunity to become a La Salle Explorer was nothing short of providential. “I knew in eighth grade that I really wanted to go to La Salle but that my parents could not afford it.” Fortunately for both Bill and La Salle, a partial academic scholarship combined with a year-round job at Saint Luke’s Parish in Glenside made his enrollment possible. “My parents took everything I earned and put it toward tuition,” he says. And so began a forty-year enduring commitment to Lasallian mission and education.

After graduating from La Salle, Matthews went on to La Salle University and later Notre Dame Law School, building a distinguished legal career at Klehr, Harrison Harvey Branzburg LLP, and earning a reputation as one of Philadelphia’s leading business attorneys. Whether he is advising clients or his four sons, La Salle’s influence remains ever present. “It is really all about the Christian Brothers,” he reflects. “The teachers I had and the relationships I formed at La Salle truly taught me the value of integrity, discipline, and compassion and set me up for success, both personally and professionally.” In particular, Bill fondly recalls his relationship with Brother John D’Alfonso, FSC ’55 as being invaluable to his growth. “The Brothers’ care for each individual student was as evident 40 years ago as it today.” That type of individualized attention and relationship-building continues to be a hallmark of Lasallian education, and it was important to Bill and his wife Nancy that their sons be given that experience.

“Each of our boys was different in how they learned and in what interested them,” Matthews explains. “La Salle was able to meet each of them exactly where they were.” Central to that experience was the continued development of the David Program, which reflects La Salle’s commitment to supporting students with varied learning styles and abilities.

“The David Program allowed our family to stay together even though our boys had varied educational paths.”

Matthews emphasizes that his involvement has always been a family affair. Nancy played an integral role during their sons’ years at La Salle, serving on the Mothers’ Club Board and as President of the Mothers’ Club. Together, they found that the relationships formed through shared service are what keep them connected to the La Salle community long after graduation.

And Bill is most definitely a shining example of what “Leave to Serve” really means. He is a civic leader whose work with youth organizations, schools, his church, and a variety of charities is both broad and deep. Nowhere is this leadership more evident than at La Salle College High School, where he served on the Board of Trustees from 2018 to 2025,

including roles as Chair of the Strategy Committee and Vice Chair. Over the years, Matthews has also served as President of the Board of Trustees for La Salle University, and as a board member for Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, BLOCS, and For Pete’s Sake. “That desire to lead and to serve absolutely came from my experience at the high school,” he adds. It is Bill’s ardent belief that he and his fellow alums must be visible stewards of missionbased education.

“There is no substitute for getting involved, volunteering time, and giving back to the places and people that provided so much.” It is this enduring sense of gratitude and responsibility to the Christian Brothers, to the community, and to future Explorers that continues to draw Bill Matthews and his family back to La Salle. He is confident in the school’s direction and in its ability to flourish. Undoubtedly, Bill will be a visible and dynamic force in continuing the mission of the Christian Brothers for years to come.

Today, Bill has a new prayer: “I pray that La Salle will continue to open doors for students like I once was,” young men whose potential may outpace their financial means. It is a prayer that what was once given to him will continue to be given to others. Because somewhere, right now, there is another eighth grader hoping, praying, wondering if La Salle is possible. Thanks to Bill Matthews’ enduring commitment that answer will be yes.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES JOHN BUTLER ’91

CLASS OF 1991 For John Butler ’91, La Salle wasn’t just a high school; it was the place that changed the direction of his life.

A 1991 graduate of La Salle College High School, Butler grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and originally planned to follow the same path as many people in his neighborhood by attending another local school. However, after encouragement from a mentor, he made the decision to attend La Salle, a choice he still considers “the best decision” he has ever made.

After graduating from La Salle, Butler attended Catholic University of America, where he played both football and basketball from 1991 to 1995. His time as a student athlete helped shape his discipline and competitive mindset, setting the foundation for what would become a long and successful coaching career.

Today, Butler has spent over 30 years coaching football at both the college and professional levels, beginning his coaching career at his alma mater, Catholic University.

Throughout his career, Butler has coached several top Division I programs, including the University of Texas, Harvard University, the University of Minnesota, the University of South Carolina, Penn State, and the University of Nebraska. He also spent multiple years in the NFL, coaching for the Houston Texans and the Buffalo Bills.

His career has taken him across the country, allowing him to work with a wide range of teams, players, and coaching staffs.

Coming from a modest background – his father worked as a roofer and his mother as a hairdresser – Butler said La Salle exposed him to new opportunities and perspectives. He credits much of his success to the environment he experienced at La Salle.

“It opened the doors for me to a totally different world,” Butler explained.

Being surrounded by students from different areas helped him realize that his goals were achievable with hard work and determination.

During his time at La Salle, Butler was heavily influenced by his coaches and mentors. He specifically remembers the impact of his basketball coach, Marty Jackson, and his football coach, Joe Colistra. These figures not only helped him develop as an athlete but also guided him as a person.

He also mentioned the lasting presence of faculty members, noting how many teachers remain at La Salle for decades, continuing to shape generations of students.

Although Butler was the only member of his immediate family to attend La Salle, the school left such a strong impression on him that he has stayed connected ever since.

In recent years, he even created an endowment to help provide other students with the same opportunities he had.

His goal is to give back and ensure that more students can benefit from a La Salle education.

“The best thing you can do for someone is give them the same opportunities you had,” Butler said.

For Butler, success isn’t just about football or career achievements; it’s about growth, connections, and giving back. Butler’s journey shows what can happen when opportunity meets hard work.

And for current La Salle students, his message is clear: take advantage of every opportunity, because you never know where it might lead.

INDEBTED TO LA SALLE JOHN MALLACH ’96

CLASS OF 1996 When John Mallach ’96 got the call inviting him to join the Board of Trustees at La Salle College High School, he did not see it coming. It immediately took him back to his first visit to campus as an eighth grader – wide-eyed and impressed by everything he saw. Years later, that feeling has not changed. What he could not have known then was that he would become the first of three Mallach brothers to become Explorers.

Today, in his 26th year with Merrill Lynch, John is a Managing Director and Senior Financial Advisor and quick to point out that his work ethic started at La Salle. One of his biggest influences was Coach Joe Parisi. “Coach Parisi always believed in the small details, not cutting corners, and constant improvement. Great practice leads to great games.” It is a mindset John still leans on: put in the work and the results will follow.

That approach showed up early. While many of his friends spent their high school summers at the Jersey Shore, John was interning for his father at Merrill Lynch, digging into earnings forecasts and helping with market research. It was not the typical high school summer, but it gave him a head start and reinforced what it takes to reach his goals.

Recruited to play football at Fairfield University, John embraced the opportunity. But he also recognized a difficult tradeoff. Balancing the demands of college athletics with his academic ambitions, including graduating in four years, and studying abroad, would be a challenge. Ultimately, he made the decision to step away from football and prioritize his long-term goals. The choice paid off: he graduated on time and spent a transformative semester studying in London.

After college, John set his sights on building a career in finance and living in a big city. In 2006, he moved to New York and joined Merrill Lynch. A few years later the financial crisis hit and tested the industry. Like many, John faced uncertainty but the discipline and resilience he had developed over the years helped him navigate the turmoil and emerge stronger.

In 2011, John moved back to the Philadelphia area to be closer to family and now works alongside his father and

brother Kyle ’97, in the Merrill Lynch office in Jenkintown.

The move also brought him closer to the La Salle campus that had played such a pivotal role in his life. Serving on the Board of Trustees was not something he had ever imagined, but it quickly became one of the most meaningful ways to stay connected. He is inspired by the alumni he serves alongside and proud that the school is on such positive footing with plenty of forward momentum.

Giving back has always been part of the plan. “I am indebted to La Salle. I knew that as soon as I was financially able, I was going to give back.” John established an endowed fund to provide financial assistance to a deserving student who plays baseball or football, helping open doors for the next generation of Explorers. For John, the motivation is simple: La Salle made a lasting impact on his life, and supporting its future is both a responsibility and a privilege. Another goal achieved.

USING ALL HIS RESOURCES MATT SINNOTT ’06

CLASS OF 2006 In the halls of La Salle College High School, history doesn’t just repeat itself — it evolves.

For one returning alumnus, the journey from a 2006 graduate to a professional mentor has come full circle, bridging the gap between traditional student life and the rapidly shifting landscape of digital media.

A decade and a half ago, the campus knew Mr. Matt Sinnott as a multi-sport athlete and a fixture in student government.

"I played ice hockey all four years," he recalled, noting he balanced the physical demands of the rink with the intellectual rigor of speech and debate. "I was on varsity, too, my sophomore through senior year... and then I got really involved with WEXP and my senior student council."

That early involvement in WEXP — the school's media outlet — planted a seed that eventually led him to California State University, Northridge. Located just outside the heart of Los Angeles, it was the perfect staging ground for a career in the "industry." Initially focused on film, he soon "pivoted to multimedia," a move that allowed him to secure internships and gain a foothold in the competitive West Coast creative scene.

But the pull of home and the LaSalle community eventually brought him back east. The transition from professional creator to educator was catalyzed by a chance conversation with Information Sciences & Technology Director Rob Johnson.

"Mr. Johnson said, 'Hey, would you be interested in teaching?' " Sinnott said.

Initially hesitant because he wasn't a "teacher" by trade, he was reassured that the school was "looking for outside professionals to come in and teach certain electives."

He specifically pointed to the resources available on campus as a major advantage that students shouldn't take for granted.

"When you’re here at La Salle, you have access to these Adobe tools that cost a lot of money if you pay for them on your own," he noted.

Since stepping back into the classroom, the experience has been mutually beneficial. "I’ve really enjoyed it for the last couple of years," he said with a smile. "I think the kids kind of keep me relevant, too, so it’s really been beneficial for me as well."

Beyond the software, he emphasized the importance of the human element, encouraging freshmen and sophomores to "come down to WEXP and have a conversation with the faculty." As the media landscape incorporates new technologies like AI, his final message to the next generation of designers is one of relentless output.

For students looking to follow in Sinnott’s footsteps, his advice is simple: Start doing. In an era where professionalgrade tools are more accessible than ever, waiting for a formal assignment is a missed opportunity.

"My best advice is to just make as much stuff as you can," he concluded. "Don’t ever be done making stuff. Always be using the tools that are available."

"If you’re into photography, just start taking photos.

If you want to create videos, just start filming and editing," he urged.

ALWAYS AN EXPLORER ROB KELLY ’11

CLASS OF 2011 At La Salle College High School, the idea of brotherhood is more than just a slogan. For Rob Kelly ’11, it’s a family tradition – that keeps expanding.

With seven uncles who graduated before him, two brothers who followed in his foot-steps, and a grandmother who worked at La Salle in the 50s and 60s, Kelly grew up surrounded by stories, memories, and a deep-rooted connection to the school, even before he stepped foot in the front door as a freshman.

“I've grown up in the La Salle family,” Kelly said. “I've always felt that as part of my identity, even before I went there.”

Kelly credits his uncle, Brother Bob Schaefer, FSC ’85, who serves as the Provincial Visitor of the Christian Brothers District of Eastern North America, as the key influence for his early love for La Salle.

That generational bond gave Kelly a unique perspective as he wasn’t just creating his own experience, but continuing a legacy built over decades by relatives that came before him.

After graduating from La Salle in 2011, Kelly headed south to attend the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL, where he played lacrosse for the Hurricanes. He applied what he learned from La Salle and transformed it into a career at SEI Investments, a financial services company headquartered in Oaks, PA, with offices all over the world, including Toronto, London, Hong Kong, and Dubai.

SEI provides products and services to institutions, private banks, investment advisors, investment managers, and private clients. Through its subsidiaries and partnerships, SEI manages, advises, or administers $1 trillion in hedge funds, private equity, mutual funds, and pooled or separately managed assets.

Kelly has been with the company for 11 years and is now the Senior Relationship Manager responsible for the largest relationships in the western United States. He credits La Salle with preparing him for his success.

“La Salle has done just an immense number of things for me, both for my career and on a personal level,” Kelly said.

“I just felt prepared going into college, and it didn't feel like a big jump for me, going from La Salle to the University of Miami, and then obviously taking that and translating it to my career right after college.”

While a student at La Salle, Kelly was a dedicated basketball manager and kept the scorebook. During his time with the team, they made two trips to the Palestra for the Final Four and won the City Championship in 2010. He still attends varsity basketball games and sits behind the bench. Last year, he came up with the idea to sponsor a halftime activity that has become popular with the students.

With the help of other members from the Class of 2011, Kelly sponsored a full-court putt for $1,000. One student is chosen at random each game and at halftime is given the opportunity to putt a golf ball the length of the gym floor into a specially designed hole. In two seasons, no one has won, but a few have come close and made it exciting for the crowd. It is one of the ways that he has chosen to give back to a place that means so much to him.

At La Salle, he also found his next family in the form of the ever-expanding alumni network. He went from one big family to an even bigger one. He is most proud of his friendships from the Class of 2011, and their annual golf trip which they call the “Bush League Open”. Kelly and 11 other La Salle grads have been taking this trip every summer since 2015 and it keeps them in touch throughout the year.

“Our friendship is something that was built at La Salle and will last the rest of our lives. The guys are my brothers now.”

“La Salle has given me a network that, to me, is the most important thing,” Kelly said. “It's a bunch of men that can be anywhere in the country, really, that you have an immediate connection with something that you can immediately talk with, and you can hit off the conversation with them, and you have a lot of similarities already, and that's been something that's been really powerful.”

Once an Explorer, always an Explorer.

“Over the years, you meet someone like, oh, he's a LaSalle guy,” Kelly said. “Maybe he went there 20 years before me.

But guess what, we still both went La Salle.”

Bound By A BROTHERHOOD

What would you do if you knew that this spring would be the last time you’d ever sit with your fellow classmates in high school? For the Class of 2026 at La Salle College High School, that hypothetical is becoming reality. As our “last” approaches, the weight of our legacy is finally set in. It is impressive to see how much we have all learned and grown over the past four years. If there was one word I could use to describe the Class of 2026, I could say excellence, but I feel like that word is overused. Instead, I think the word resilient matches this class perfectly.

I have seen them work, and I have seen them move on from every tragedy, every loss in sports, every mistake, and every bad grade. Every setback that this class faced, they pushed themselves to keep going. Their imperfection became their greatest motivation, and that has led them from achievements such as good academics, creativity, improvement in the fine arts, and championship victories to where they stand now.

I chose the word resilience over excellence because they learned to humble themselves and take risks that have taught them something greater than excellence, and that is transcendence.

So now they’re here. You all did it! I know many are excited about this change, and others are afraid of it. I ask the soon-to-be graduating class to not be afraid of the future; it will come in its own time.

The Bible says in Matthew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

The truth is we spend so much time thinking about the future that we forget to enjoy ourselves in the present, where the most important part of our lives happens. If God takes care of the rest of the animals around the world, then He will take care of you now and in the future.

Take things one day at a time, because that will teach you one of the greatest lessons in life, and that is patience. Through that, you will be able to find success at its finest.

I am proud of this class, and I am thankful to have explored the unknown with you all. Now that we are heading out our separate ways soon, I ask you to remember the friends you have made, these words that you are hearing, and both the pain and greatness that La Salle has brought.

As much as I can go on, I can’t; these words are, and forever will be, in the past, but the experience will stay with you forever. Because wherever you go, you will always bring your alma mater with you, and it has made you into the gentlemen that you all are today. To anyone who is scared that they won’t reach their dreams because of the path they are taking, remember this, “success is not where you come from, but rather how you build it.”

From young freshmen to recent graduates, every moment at La Salle has made us bound by a brotherhood, and it is one of the best experiences that life has to offer.

So, I ask you to save memories, and most importantly, save the dream.

ALUMNI NEWS JACK MCCLOSKEY ’62 retired as an Orthopaedic Surgeon after 45 years. He is the Past President of New Jersey Orthopaedic Society.

ROBERT YACOBELLIS ’64 spent month of October 2025 in Sydney, Australia with his son and grandson.

REVEREND ANTHONY JANTON, AFSC ’69 was honored on April 23, 2026, by Regina Coeli Academy at their annual Joyful Saints Fundraiser and Auction. Father Janton has been a faithful supporter and friend of Regina Coeli Academy (RCA) since 2012 when RCA moved into the school building at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Abington. Since then, Father Janton has been a steady presence at the school and his wisdom, encouragement, generosity, constant support, and spiritual guidance have been an invaluable help in carrying out the mission of Regina Coeli Academy. Mrs. Ann Post, Head of School, announced at the event that the library at the school would be renamed in honor of Father Janton.

CDR. ROBERT PRODOEHL, USN(RET.) '73 retired from the U.S. Navy in 1997 having served 20 years as a Naval Flight Officer. He retired from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University in 2022 after serving 21 years as Executive Director of Operations. He currently resides with his wife in Williamstown, NJ, where he spends as much time as possible with his ten grandchildren.

EDWARD MORTKA ’75 retired in June of 2025 and is enjoying the good life in Harleysville, PA. JAMES DONAHUE ’76 retired as First Deputy Attorney General in Pennsylvania, Office of Attorney General after 40 years in office. Donahue started with the Office of Attorney General in 1985, working in a number of capacities, and front-lining some of the office’s most impactful legal work on behalf of Pennsylvanians, specifically consumers.

Donahue was part of landmark litigation efforts to bring funds to Pennsylvania from the historic tobacco and opioid settlements, and fought monopolies from major companies, including Ticketmaster and pharmaceutical companies. His work also was integral in protecting consumers during major airline, grocery store, and other retailer mergers that could have limited consumer options and cost them more for everyday products.

“It would be impossible to quantify Jim’s impact, but I can confidently say he had a hand in legal efforts that impacted nearly every community in the Commonwealth — and beyond,” Attorney General Dave Sunday said. “Jim is a true public servant who made himself available at any hour, during any holiday or vacation, for the sake of helping Pennsylvanians and their families.”

PATRICK NOONAN ’76 was recently inducted into West Chester University's Sports Hall of Fame for his National Collegiate Boxing Championship in 1979.

HUGH PANARO ’82 was one of eight Philadelphia artists who joined the 2026 Walk of Fame class, continuing a tradition that stretches back nearly 40 years. Since launching the induction ceremony in 1987, the organization has used the Walk of Fame to spotlight the people who helped shape Philadelphia’s music legacy while also supporting students and emerging artists carrying that legacy forward. Panaro is best known for having played the coveted role of the Phantom in Broadway’s “Phantom of the Opera” more than 2,000 times. He has also appeared in “Les Miserables,” “Show Boat,” “South Pacific,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Masquerade”, and many others. Panaro and the other inductees were honored at a ceremony on May 13, 2026 at The Kimmel Center.

JONATHAN WAHL ’86 creates artwork that ranges from drawing and sculpture to decorative art. It is often conceptually linked to historical movements and political commentary. Wahl’s work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the MFA Boston, the Houston Museum of Fine Art, The New York Historical Society, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. It has been featured or reviewed in publications as diverse as The New York Times, Art in America, The New Yorker, Architectural Digest, Oprah Magazine, W Jewelry, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Metalsmith Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, The Aventurine, Advocate, and The Antiques Magazine, among others. Wahl has been awarded the Louis Comfort Tiffany Emerging Artist Fellowship from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships (one for Craft and one for Drawing), and the Pennsylvania Society of Goldsmiths Award for Outstanding Achievement.

ROBERT WEIKEL '86 has moved back to the surgical energy space after 17 years in the non-surgical aesthetic laser industry. He has joined the leadership team of the Ellman family-owned company, Soniquence, LLC, to build a global marketing strategy and lead the international

sales team to provide medical, dental, and veterinary practices with state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) surgical technology to minimize lateral heat and protect surrounding tissues, leading to improved patient safety, outcomes, and experiences.

COL. ADAM FREY, USAF ’96 was recently promoted to the rank of Colonel in the United Sates Air Force. His father, Peter Frey ’56, is retired and very proud of his son.

ROBERT STOTT ’06 launched a self-owned communications and marketing consulting company in January 2026 and, at the same time, acquired a smart home and design magazine.

SEAN BROOKS ’09 celebrated the release of his first book, Microvictories: A Life of Celebration, Gratitude, and Purpose. Drafter over the course of two years, the work explores the perspectives and mentalities necessary to find purpose and gratitude in a chaotic world. Written with the intent to help others find light in difficult times, the book is a testament to the power of small celebrations. Microvictories is available now through Amazon or IngramSpark.

MICHAEL VECCHIONE ’11 is celebrating his 10th year in the U.S. Coast Guard.

BILL ROSE ’12 and his company, Joyful Films, produced the Emmy Award-winning film, The Total Gift: A Katharine Drexel Story, which is now streaming on FORMED and instantly accessible to Catholics around the world.

ZAIRE FRANKLIN ’14 hosted the 2nd annual gala to benefit his charity, Shelice’s Angels, on March 26, 2026. The event was attended by several La Salle alums.

Two students, Sylvian Kaleb Garbutt ’29 and Gabe Caldwell ’30, were recognized as recipients of the Juanita Bailey Winder Highsmith Scholarship that Zaire established in honor of his mother at La Salle College High School.

CHRISTOPHER HLADCZUK ’17 was recently named a “Forbes 30 Under 30” and was featured as a young entrepreneur for his contributions to finance and influencing how global money flows. A graduate of Yale University, Hladczuk worked for a year in investment banking at Goldman Sachs before joining Meow, a digital bank for businesses, where he eventually became chief revenue officer. He left in early 2024 to start Hanover Park with software engineer Nick Puljic, who had previously founded an investing app. Hanover Park does fund administration accounting for asset managers like venture capital, private equity, and private credit firms. It helps investment managers keep records for their investments, including details like deal terms, ownership percentages, and liquidation rights. It uses AI to allow asset managers to query accounting data more easily with questions, and it's trying to unseat incumbents like SS&C and Apex. After launching in early 2025, Hladczuk says Hanover Park has $10 billion in assets under management and has more than ten clients, including VC firms like Susa Ventures, GoAhead Ventures, and Steel Atlas. In September 2025, it raised $27 million in Series A funding led by Emergence Capital.

QUINN BUCK ’22 received the Brad E. Davis Scholarship Award for Outstanding Community Service from the SEC. The award was presented in April at the University of South Carolina’s annual Gamecock Gala. Quinn has volunteered as a coach at Columbia Lacrosse Club (@colalaxclub) and has given his time, energy, and leadership to develop young players both on and off the field. The award reflects the impact he’s made not just in the program but in the community.

REVEREND THOMAS CIPOLLA ’17 was ordained a priest on May 16, 2026, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. The Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, D.D., Archbishop of Philadelphia, was the principal celebrant and homilist at the Mass and administered the Rite of Ordination to the Priesthood to eight new priests for service in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Father Cipolla celebrated his First Mass (Mass of Thanksgiving) the following day at Immaculate Conception BVM Church in Jenkintown, where he grew up and was an altar server. His chalice was a gift from Reverend Joseph Howarth, the pastor of Immaculate Conception and a friend of La Salle. The chalice is almost 100 years old and originally from Rome where it belonged to Father William Buckley, the first American to be Provincial for the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales. Father Cipolla celebrated the Baccalaureate Mass for the Class of 2026 and La Salle community on May 18, 2026, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Doylestown.

Following nine years of study at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, Father Cipolla was assigned as a parochial vicar at Saint Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Lansdale, where he will assist Reverend Patrick Brady with his pastoral and administrative duties.

REVEREND BERNARD FARLEY (HON.’26) was awarded a diploma Honoris Causa for his quarter century of dedicated service as a Kairos chaplain that has seen him interact with almost every student in that time.

Mark Chesnik, who was an adult leader on the school’s first Kairos in 1997 and continues to lead retreats each year, said that “Father Bernie has become an integral part of La Salle’s Kairos program as he has shared his personal journey and experiences. His honesty and spiritual insights have opened our community’s hearts and minds to the presence of God.” Father Farley entered Saint Charles Borremeo Seminary following his sophomore year at Roman Catholic High School and was ordained in 1968. He served at parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia before his retirement in 2017 as Chaplain of Saint John Neumann Nursing Home in Northeast Philadelphia. In 2000, he began serving as the chaplain for Kairos retreats at La Salle College High School. During that time, he has participated in over 150 Kairos retreats in addition to supporting the school’s mission and ministry team in a variety of capacities throughout the academic year.

Lewis Clark, Director of Lasallian Mission and Ministry, added that “Father Farley has been a cornerstone of La Salle’s retreat programs for over 25 years. His ministry to La Salle College High School transcends Kairos as he has officiated weddings, funerals, and baptisms in the La Salle community as well as responding to the school’s ministry needs.”

Father Farley received his honorary diploma from La Salle College High School as part of the school’s 163rd Commencement Exercises on May 20, 2026.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS

WILL CRAIG ’26 placed 5th in the Floor Event at the Eastern National Men’s Gymnastic Competition held April 24-26, 2026 in Palm Beach, FL. It was Will’s best finish at a national meet. Earlier in the year, he was recognized as an Academic All-American.

JULIAN DiFEBBO ’26 recorded his Music Production Capstone song with Ron DiSilvestro, the chief engineer and resident producer at the iconic Studio 4 Recording in Conshohocken. Julian originally recorded the song in the studio at La Salle College High School with his teacher, Mr. Greg Snyder, but later was able to record it again with tens of thousands of dollars of equipment, including Sheryl Crow’s guitar. Julian’s father, Michael DiFebbo ’87, recorded piano on the track, and Ron DiSilvestro laid down some drums and auxiliary percussion. Greg Snyder took the entire Music Production Capstone class to Studio 4 Recording for a tour and to watch Julian record his song. The occasion provided the capstone students the opportunity to interact and work with industry professionals and alumni, which is the purpose of the Concentrations Capstone course.

RYAN GRINGERI ’28 created a Veterans Memorial overlooking Ward Field on the campus of La Salle College High School as his Eagle Scout Project. The memorial was designed as a place of reflection and remembrance to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces, including a number of La Salle alumni. Every element of the memorial from the bronze guardian eagle statue on a granite pedestal to the patio and benches to the walkway of bricks engraved with the names and years of alumni veterans stand as a permanent salute to their sacrifice. Ryan

is the recipient of the 2026 Eagle Scout Project of the Year Award as well as the Congressional Award Gold Medal in recognition for initiative and service.

The memorial is also a symbol of leadership, perseverance, and community collaboration as the project required extensive planning, fundraising, budgeting, and scheduling.

Through grants, sponsorships, and donations, Ryan raised over $25,000 and nearly 600 volunteer hours were contributed. One of the major donors was The Home Depot Foundation. In addition, alumni and local supporters who believe in honoring veterans contributed throughout the planning and construction process. The memorial weaves together Lasallian heritage by featuring plaques with quotes about service from Saint John Baptist de La Salle.

His teachings on leading a life of selfless dedication mirror the sacrifices made by La Salle alumni who served in the military. Ryan commented, “it was my honor to build this memorial as a lasting tribute to our veterans and Lasallian brothers who bravely left to serve.” The memorial was dedicated at a service on May 30, 2026.

BRENDAN BOGANSKY ’27 has been training and competing in water polo tournaments to make his playstyle more competitive. In August of 2025, USA Water Polo invited Brendan, along with some of the top high school water polo players in the country, to travel to Serbia to train with the Olympic Development Team. The trip provided exposure and the chance to play against some of the best players in the world. Brendan had to adapt to a different style of play but is grateful to have experienced the worldclass competition. Brendan was able to use what he learned to help his teams back home. La Salle’s Water Polo team has experienced tremendous success, finishing at the top of the Eastern Conference each of the past two years, and losing a hard-fought state championship game this past November.

Brendan, who also plays for the water polo club, WCAC United, has been playing since fourth grade. In his earlier years, he participated in baseball, basketball, and swimming, which gave him some of the foundational skills

needed to succeed in water polo. During swim season at Springfield Aquatic Club, La Salle’s assistant water polo coach, Ben Mancini, introduced Brendan to water polo.

Brendan is grateful for the coaching he has received at the high school, club, and Olympic development levels.

He credits La Salle and United 16U head coach, Matt del Rio, for making a significant impact on his career and for helping him develop a love for water polo. Brendan was recently named “Mr. Water Polo” for the 2025 season, an award given each year to the Most Valuable Player in the state of Pennsylvania. He will continue his career at Loyola Marymount University. He hopes one day to return to La Salle or United to help coach.

LJ TULLER ’28 was awarded the Robert G. Gabage Memorial Archdiocese of Philadelphia Catholic Scout Award on April 18, 2026, at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul

by Bishop Michael Fitzgerald, who called the achievement "rare and monumental" for a Catholic Scout. To receive the award requires dedication to one’s faith in Catholicism and achievement of earning all four Catholic Scouting medals over a period of ten or more years from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts (Light of Christ, Parvuli Dei, Ad Altare Dei, the Pope Pius XII medals). Each medal has a different focus regarding our faith and earning each of the four medals requires a commitment of time, study, education, retreats, service, and board of review.
