HAIL LA SALLE

BROTHER E. FRANCIS, F.S.C.

looking back is always pleasant if the past was rich in joy and friendship, in success and achievement, in doing good and being big. Mapping a fu ture is also a happy experience, when we know that with God's help we will con tinue to succeed. It has been a pleasant privilege to be associated with the Class of 1960, to share their successes and to anticipate their future gains. There is no short cut to achieving real happiness and success in life. Character and mental maturity are realized only after long years of patient effort. The grade and high school years are just a beginning of the long process required to make the most of our God-given gifts of mind and body. We wish for the Class of 1960 the complete fulfillment of the potentialities so obviously manifest during the past four years. Positions of trust and influence, in the professional and industrial fields, wi ll be yours within a decade if only your will-to-win and consideration for others are developed on the foundations already laid. God grant that you continue in the way you have so well begun.

principal's message

WE PROUDLY

DEDICATE THE 1960 BLUE AND GOLD TO BROTHER D. JEREMY . . . for his intensive interest in the students of La Salle High School. Brother Jeremy graduated from Catholic University, having majored in Spanish and French Since coming to La Salle eleven years ago, he has exhibited plentifully the Christian Brothers' philosophy of educating the whole young man. Brother has enlightened countless students in the field of languages. Both the basketball and the tennis teams have benefited from his moderatorship. Almost single-handedly he has developed the La Salle intramural program, which is one of the most complete in the city. Brother has devoted much of his time to make the intramurals a success. For his complete devotion to both curricular and extracurricular activities, Brother Jeremy richly deserves the acclamation of the Class of 1960.

ACTIVITIES

STUDENT COUNCIL Each year the Student Council takes on new responsibilities and handles old ones with new efficiency. In the second year with Brother E. Adrian and Mr. Joseph Moran, co-moderators, the council held record hops in the fall, at Christmas, and for St. Patrick's Day in addition to the traditional dances on Thanksgiving and Easter; the crowning achievement was the Senior Prom, considered by many to be the best in years. The Activities Committee continued with its work of sponsoring rallies, running several drives for the school, and procuring buses for some of the away games. The student handbook was prepared for the second year by a council committee, and once again the Service Committee enforced stair regulations and provided ushers for school events. The officers, President Peter Clark, Vice-President Thomas Crow, and Secretary Joseph Cattie were the proud hosts to the presidents of other Catholic League schools at a meeting held in the College Union Building.

BAND Once again the La Salle High School Band has completed a successful year of musical accomplishments both on and off campus. Mr. Donald Reinhardt, completing his first year as director of music at La Salle, has introduced several innovations to the band curriculum. By streamlining the band membership and making ensemble divisions, the department hopes to bring music of the highest quality. Perhaps the most appreciated performances of the band are seen in the colorful mtd-game displays during football season. In the Catholic League High School Band contest the band marched away with the second place trophy for excellence in music. The Wisterians, the dance band, garnered first place in the Catholic League Contest. The musical year is formally closed with the annual Spring Music Festival.

CAPE AND SWORD The Cape and Sword, under the capable di rection of Mr. John Moore and Brother D. Lewis, moderator, with aid from our stage crew and the girls from Saint Basil's Academy, brought a successful season to a brilliant climax when they presented the comedy, "George Wash路 ington Slept Here." During the year, the dramatics club presented for the enjoyment of the student body, several one-act plays including "The Informer" and two original plays written by juniors John Flynn and Dennis Perzanowski. They also assisted Saint Basil's Academy in their production, and participated in the one-act play contest sponsored by La Salle College.

WI STERIAN In its twenty-sixth year of publication, the Wisterian, moderated by Brother David Hilary, returned to a former policy of four page editors; this division of labor proved highly successful and will probably be continued in the coming year. Innovations in this year's paper were the floating mast and a literary section, which was included in a special six page issue. Through this medium, students were able to develop their literary talents, such as writing essays, poems, and short stories besides their journalistic ability. Under the leadership of senior editors Pete Clark, Mark Malone, and Joe O'Brien, and junior editor, Louis Balizet, the Wisterian has continued to be an outstanding school publication.

MATH CLUB The Mathematics Club, a member of the national mathematical organization, Mu Alpha Theta, is now in its fifth year under the direction of Brothers F. John and D. Edward. Brother John is in charge of the senior division while Brother Edward moderates the junior group. The Math Club's job is to develop a deeper interest in mathematical notions which are not contained in the normal high school curriculum.

CHOIR In compliance with the Holy Fathe r's wishes, the Brothers have included in the school's spiritual program, the celebration of dialogue Masses. The students have been taught the simple r Mass hymns and responses, but Brother Erasamus Francis has organized the choir to chant the more difficult passages at Mass. This volunteer group has well proved its worth by its a cappella vocalizing, and by the explanations of the various movements in t he Mass, by a reader from the cho1r. With the completion of its second year, the choir has established itself as one of the more prom inent g roups on campus. Brother E. Francis leads choral group at High Mass.

HOBBY CLUBS Besides the organized and moderated clubs, many of the enthusiastic students venture into amorphous groups; the two most popular being the Photography and Coin Clubs. This year more than ever, these clubs lie in the outlet for personal expression and mutual sharing of interests. The most notable achievement of the year was senior Oliver Roman's discovery of rare coins.

LIBRARY AIDES Under the able supervision of Mr. Carl von Nell, the library aides have once again successfully handled the task of staffing the library for La Salle students. The aides work throughout the school year cataloging, classifying and processing the books that come into the library constantly. The periodical meetings highlight a book report from one of the club members, g1ven with the hopes that new books and popular materials will be made known to the student body. Like any well organized club the library aides hold annual elections. Executives for this year were: Anthony Lucidi, president and Nicholas Colosi, vice-president.

FORENSIC CLUB Our forensic club, moderated by Brother Erasmus Francis, participated in seven debate and speech tournaments this year. In two consecutive tournaments sponsored by the high school and the college, our varsity squad took second place in the high school tournament and had the best over-all record of any school participating in the college tourney. Although debating is its main activity, our varsity squad, competing against a hundred other speakers at the West Catholic Extemporaneous Speaking tournament, capped two trophies. The sophomores also high lighted their season by winntng the St. Joseph's Debate tournament.

ART CLUB One of the most popular clubs around school, the Art Club, is once again under the very capable direction of Brother F William. The members act as the harbingers of coming events by painting posters and signs for school activities, most notably, the pep rallies. These budding artists get a chance to try their skill in various mediums such as oils, pastels, water colors, and clay and to participate in contests including the annual Halloween Window Painting Contest, our own Music Festival Poster Contest and the culmination of their efforts in the Art Exhibit held every year in the gym.

BENILDE CLUB The B e n i I d e Club, now in its eleventh year and easily the most popular and most rapidly growing organization in the school, was forced to expand for the second time in three years by the overwhelming number of students who wished to participate in the club's activities. The seniors and juniors were each given separate divisions, while the freshman and sophomores constituted a third group. The Benilde Club illustrates the different aspects and objectives of various religious orders. Speakers, representing religious societies and ord~rs, give talks and answer questions at the bi-weekly meetings. Brother David Albert, who founded the Benilde Club in 1948, has been the motivating force behind its success.

SOCIAL STUDIES CLUBS The Social Studies Club, comprised of the senior International Relations Club, moderated by Mr. John Harbison, and the sophomore-junior History Club under the capable direction of Brother F. Bernardine tried to extend the interests of the students into world affairs of the past and present. The activities of the upperclass division centered mainly around the trips to the various plants and offices in order to acquaint themselves with the world of business while the underclassmen held periodic discussions on sundry topics.

BLUE AND GOLD The 1960 Blue and Gold is the culmination of planning and preparation which began last summer. As in previous years the excellent photos taken by Mike Maidrer have made the work of the yearbook staff much easier. This year's staff consists of Dennis Cronin and Joseph O'Brien, co-editors; Peter Clark and Mark Malone, managing editors; and James lamb, Richard Panati, and William Wallace, associate editors. Many new features have been added to the annual, including the color cover, duo-tone endpieces, introduction, plastic covers, and in formal section; all of which help to make the 1960 yearbook one of the best.

Members of the staff perform various duties.

Annual Communion Breakfast

ALUMNI With ever growing interests and increased participation, La Salle Alumni, moderated by Brother E. Joseph, added to the many activities this year. The Annual Communion Breakfast, the homecoming football and basketball games路 highlighted the social calendar. Last year's president was Mr. James Gallegher. In September the presidency will be in the hands of Mr. John Tex Flannery.

Raised hands show the active participation in the question and answer session of the Father and Son Banquet.

MEN OF LA SALLE The Men of La Salle, an organization to promote better relations among teachers and fathers, has concluded its thirteenth year. Mr. Albert Hurlbrink, president, de serves much praise for the revitalization and progress of the club in the past year. As 1n the past, the organization supplied financial aid to needy students. The fathers' club successfully conducted many affairs during the school year. The Freshmen Fathers' Night initiated new mem路 bers into the organization. Highlight of the year, the Father and Son Banquet, held at the Four Chefs' Restaurant, provided teachers, students, and fathers with an opportunity to become acquainted informally. The fathers also feted the football team in a midyear testimonial. Champs Night featured the baseball team, 1959 Catholic League champions. The revitalized Men of La Salle can look forward to many more years of service.

CHAIRWOMAN, MRS. MORTON, DISPLAYS PRIZES.

MOTHERS' CLUB The La Salle Mothers' Club continued its many fine social and religious activities which brightened the school year. Among these events were the popular Saturday Night Dances, various fashion shows, the Christmas party, and the Annual Communion Breakfast. Brother G. James in his first year as moderator, was assisted by Mrs. James Crowley, president; Mrs. David Morton, vice-president; and Mrs, Joseph Haughney, secretary. The Mothers' Club again successfully presented the highlight of the social calendar, the La Salle Night Card Party, which featured bingo, dancing, cards, prizes, and a short concert given by the high school band.

PROMS The highlight of the social calendar, the Senior Prom of the class of 1960, was held December 29, 1959. Contributing to the gaiety of the occasion were the appropriate Christmas decorations of the Whitemarsh Country Club. Some 150 seniors and their dates danced to the continuous music of Frank Forest and his band . Adding to the Christmas mood of the Prom, were the parties, festivities and the falling snow.

CROSS COUNTRY The Cross-country team was the finest in recent years. After a 6-4 season record the Harriers came back to defeat three of the teams that had beaten the m and captured second place in the Catholic League. In the process, junior Pete Volk lowered the school record to 11 :59 a nd was individual runner-up. The scorers for La Salle were seniors Bob Harkins, Henry Keller, and Jim Quinlan, junior Volk, a nd sophomore Jack Devlin. Bolstering the team were seniors Pe te Clark, Larry Elias, Joe McDonald, Rudy Price, and manager Jim Flynn . The Catholic League Championship Race was the climax to the season, but La Salle continueq its exploits in post-season races. Brother William's annual hopes were finally fulfilled with this year's brilliant comeback.

FOOTBALL Regarded by many as a darkhorse when the season opened, especially after a first game defeat by a highly rated West team 22-0, the 1959 edition of the Little Explorers bounced back to win eight straight games including a triumph over Bonner, City C~amps.

After a victory over a stubborn North eleven 18-0 in which the defensive unit, including Dunleavy, Agin, Kuss, McCarty, and Yannessa, was outstanding, the Blue and Gold flew over the Cardinals 20-8 with Ken Quigley standing out on both offense and defense. The Texmen then pulled the upset of the campaign when they defeated a strong Friar team 20-12 with Guarini, Crow, and Gittens sparking the offense. Following this Heinzl, Gittens, and Guarini joined in the rout of highly touted Roman 28-6. Next the La Salle eleven rolled over the Jimmies 28-0 aided by Tom Koss's three TDs. Joe McCarty's kicks kept the Tommies constantly in the hole as the Little Explorers scored an easy victory 24-0. The gridders scuttled the Pirates 16-0 and outjourneyed the Crusaders 32-0. In the post season clash between La Salle and Bonner for the Catholic league crown, the Little Explorers held the Friars scoreless for three quarters but were defeated by a late fourth quarter score 6-0. The outstanding talents of All-Scholastic Guard Barry Dunleavy and All-Catholic Tackle Frank Yannessa were displayed, also the stellar play of MVP Howie Guarini and Roger Agin was again evident. The little Explorers of 1959, who by their own combined efforts earned the success which they had, was one of the finest and hardest fighting teams in La Salle's history. They may have been outscored at times but they were never outplayed.

BOWLING The varsity bowling team, coached by Mr. Frank McFadden, ended the 1960 season with fourth place in the Catholic league. The varsity keglers, Rick Bukata, Rod Vahle, Walt liss, and Ken White, were captained by Bob Connor. The J V's, Joe Di Gregorio, Bill Sharpe, AI Tervalon, Chris Maxwell, Bob Moser, Ed Delaney, Carmen landolo, and Ed Kohlepp enjoyed a more successful season finishing the league in a close second place. The prospects for next year are excellent, with the loss of only two seniors and the backing of an outstand ing JV section.

Vahle perfects form under eye of Coach McFadden.

BASKETBALL The 1959-1960 edition of La Salle's basketball team started out the season optimistically, but unforeseen occurrences prevented the Explorers from reaching their goal of an undefeated season. The cagers fell short with a 14-6 overall record and a 9-6 league record. Using superior height, speed, and experience, to control the backboards, scoring on fast breaks, and capitalizing on the mistakes of the other team the Explorers romped ove r five preseason opponents. Prelude to an appa rently great season was highlighted by Tom Murphy's fine all-around play and leadership, Frank Gallo's splendid ball-handling, Bill Garberina's phenomenal sharp-shooting, Joe Lynch's clutch tap-ins, and Joe Cunnane's surprising rebounding strength. La Salle fans expected an even better team to represent them in the Catholic league season with the return of Ed Kelly and Harvey Appleton from the grid1ron. However, this dream was never realized, for Tom Murphy, co-captain and coordinator of the team, suffered an off-court mishap during the Christmas holidays. John Tiller, Joe lynch, and Bill Garberina led the team to six straight victories, with substitutes Tom Gannon and Ed Kelly, distinguishing themselves in tight games. The cagers carried on bravely when Murphy sustained a dislocated elbow, but other teams began to take advantage of their weakness. La Salle's opponents used the all-court press to great ad vantage in registering close decisions in the final games of the season. Because of the cagers' hustle no opponent could break away until the final quarter in any game. The season ended on a sad note, as North Catholic terminated the season for the fifth straight year. Charles O'Brien, who completed his twentysixth year as coach of La Salle, deserves much credit for directing this fine team to a respectable record. The JV's, coached by Obie, Jr., earned a 12-8, while the frosh, led by Mr. Harbison, garnered a 13-2 log. Moderator Brother Gratian and his fine staff kept the team in good working order.

CREW The La Salle Crew, moderated by Brother E. James and coached by George Hines, after an initial defeat at the hands of Saint Joseph's Prep, rebounded with an overwhelming triumph over Monsignor Bonner to pull up in the race for the Flick Trophy. Diligent practice proved to be successful in the late season regattas and the National School Boy Championships. The varsity eight was comprised of Bob Leary, Ed Wroblewski, Frank Wesh, John Moore, Bob Griffith, Bill Shanks, Tom Emholf, Jim Detwiler, and coxswain John Becher. The brightest spot during the season was the very successful double with John Lehman and George Kelly.

TRACK It seems that every team this year was a surprise, and the track team was no exception. Mr. Harbison's "Twelve loyal Men" bowed to Father Judge in the first meet and then proceeded to sweep to successive victories right up to the Catholic league Championships. Led by captains Marty Stanczak and Ed Kelly with able assistance from Tom Koss, Henry Keller, Pete Volk, Jerry Marano, Bob Morgenthaler, Tom Crow, Jack McDonald, Fred Poellnitz, Art Mackin, and larry Elias , the thin clads emerged as the biggest shock to the league in many a year. Brother William's hurdlers and pole vaulters added much to the strength of the team. These, with the runners developed by Mr Harbison in his four years as coach, provided the backbone of La Salle's first titlethreatening track team. Te~ring

GOLF The 1960 golf team, now in its third year at Sandy Run in Oreland, will try to better last year's second place finish. The team, weakened by the loss of three starters through graduation, has returning only veterans, senior Hugh McGee and soph Phil Byrne. Newcomers Mike Doyle, Ron Hare, Dave Morin, Chuck Brogley, Den Cronin, Bob Bell, Joe Wetzel, Tom Connolly and Stan Orlowski show promise for another fine season under the direction of Brother G. TENNIS The 1960 edition of La Salle's tennis team showed high hopes of improving last year's second place finish. The squad depended on veterans, Neil and Clark Hopkins, the one-two singles punch; singles artists, Richard Feeny and Sigmond Rutkowski; and Paul Miehle, Jon Walhelm, and James Conner, who comprise the doubles, to capture the championship of the Catholic League, which is divided into two sections this year. Brother Bernardine has primed the netmen for the ten-game league schedule. In Brother Jeremy's annual treshman tennis tournament, which spots future talent, Bernard Salmon and George Smith finished one-two, respectively. These two joined David Givey, John Breckenridge, and Francis De Santis to form the junior varsity squad. l ooking to the fu ture.

BASEBALL The La Salle varsity baseball squad, which was successfully rebuilt by Coach John Hricina and Brother E. Raymond, moderator, into the Catholic league champions last year, opened the season with one of the most highly rated teams in the league. In contrast to last year's team, which contained only four seniors, the nine was the most experienced squad to come along in recent years. The formation of the team was hindered by the late snow and insistent rain, but with seniors H. Guarini, H. Appleton, R. Tragemann, F. Gallo, K. Quigley, and J. Pensabene and underclassmen S. Kearney, J. Byrnes, J. Gallagher, M. Ginieczki, and M. Gumrot forming the core, the team fulfilled its pre-season expectations of excellence. Bollantlne Beouty.

OUTSTANDING SENIORS -

Joseph O'Brien

Thomas Koss

Edward Kelly

Classes, clubs, athletic teams-all these are a part of La Salle. Every school has the same elements, but the Christian Brother's devotion to that traditional ideal, the Brother's Boy, makes La Salle outstanding. The six seniors appearing on these pages have been selected by their classmates and teachers as outstanding examples of a Christian education. Collectively they represent the achievements of the senior class of 1960. All have managed to excel in studies and extracurricular activities in the best La Salle tradition. Thomas Koss has maintained excellence both scholastically and athletically for four years. He was a distinguished halfback and end on three football teams and sprinted four years on the track team. As a senior Student Council member, Tom headed the Honor Roll committee and lent his affable touch to the social activities of the year. His friendliness, interest in the school, and his determination on the gridiron路 and cinder track marked his every effort. For this he deserves recognition. Joseph O'Brien was most prominent through his proficient work on the Wisterian and 8/ue and Gold, becoming editor of both publications. His spirited participation in intramurals coupled with his consistent honor roll status helped to make an all-around senior. Joe's quiet reliability was the mainstay for his several positions of responsibility. Edward Kelly truly exemplifies the well rounded education of a La Salle man. He was an acknowledged leader and sparkplug of every activity he entered. His three varsity letters in football, basketball, and track combined with the fine job he did as chairman of the Service Committee of the Student Council attest to his determined school spirit. Ed was

CLASS OF 1960

George Nicolaus

Howard Guarini

known throughout his four years at La Salle as one guy who gave everything he had to everything he did. George Nicolaus was that too rare phenomenon-a scholar and an athlete. His scholastic excellence resulted in four years as head of the class and culminated in the National Merit Scholarship won as a senior. This alone would be outstanding, but " Nicky" also played two years of varsity basketball. The high regard of his teachers and the respect of his classmates, George certa inly deserves. Howard Guarini, perhaps one of the best known and most popular seniors, will be remembered as the little field general who came from nowhere to lead two of our greatest football teams to one league title and a close second. Just as fondly recollected are his exploits on the diamond, particularly his timely hits and daring base-running. Howie's abilities, however, are not limited to athletics; he served three years on the Student Council, one as vice-president. His keen competitive spirit, his engaging personality, and his leadership ability have been valuable enormously to the Class of '60. Peter Clark has probably been La Salle's most active student for four years. In that time he has earned three varsity letters in cross-country and one in track, at the same tfme working up to the positions of News Editor of the Wisterian and Managing Editor of the 8/ue and Gold. Pete was best known for his work as President of Student Council and his enthusiastic participation in almost all school activities. He maintained his scholastic position despite the pressure of activities, finally receiving a Merit Scholarship. Peter is in every way outstanding. Peter Clark
