It’s time for the 22nd Annual Oktoberfest September 23 & 24 The Chamber’s Oktoberfest begins September 23, from 5-11 p.m. and continues September 24, from 9 a.m.–11 p.m. The festival is fun for the young and the young at heart.

Kids Street, arts and crafts, authentic German meals, beer and brat tents, Biergarten, carnival, continuous live entertainment, Wiener Dog & Baby Contests, Rootbiergarten, German dancers, and a whole lot of fun highlights the weekend.

Sports fan? Make sure to stop by the expanded Sport-zelt (sports tent) sponsored by the Rob Ellerman Real Estate Sales Team, and catch up on all the big games.

Oktoberfest would not be complete without the excitement and entertainment at the Biergarten. The Biergarten is the place to hang out for food, music, dancing and a lot of crazy fun! German meals are served in the Biergarten beginning Friday evening from 5–9 p.m. and Saturday evening from 4–9 p.m.

Three stages of entertainment are ongoing throughout the festival. The Main Stage, sponsored by Bank Midwest, will feature the Big Mama Band on Friday night and Beatles cover band, Liverpool, on Saturday.

The Children’s Stage, sponsored by Steppin’ Out-The Studio, will feature kid friendly entertainment and The Community Stage, sponsored by Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, will feature local entertainers and dance studios.

Sunday the carnival features a special that includes an “all you can ride” wristband from 1-5 p.m. for $20.

Kids Street features face painting, puppetry, pony rides, mini-pumpkin decorating, Firestone Complete Auto Care Rootbiergarten and many other kid-oriented activities.

The juried Arts and Crafts Fair features artists displaying their original works in watercolors, oils, photography, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, paper fiber, glass or wood.

For the past few years the Saturday of the festival has featured a Wiener Dog Contest, sponsored by Brookside Barkery and Bath, and a Baby Contest, sponsored by Child Abuse Prevention Center. Applications for these contests may be found online at lsoktoberfest. com.

Lee's Summit High School Stadium Named after Dr. Robert (Bud) Hertzog The Lee's Summit High School stadium was named after Dr. Robert (Bud) Hertzog, a LSHS graduate and community leader, during a special ceremony Aug. 26 on the football field.

A life-long Lee's Summit resident, Dr. Hertzog has devoted his life to serving his community and his schools. The stadium name recognizes Dr. Hertzog's professional success, his exemplary service to his community and school district and his outstanding character. The athletic complex will be officially known as the Bud Hertzog Stadium.

"I cannot think of anyone in our school district who is more respected than Bud Hertzog," said Dr. David McGehee, Lee's Summit R-7 superintendent. "He has continuously shared his time and talents, never hesitating to help others while providing leadership for our schools, economic development efforts, business community and civic organizations."

Dr. Hertzog's successful career has spanned six decades, and he has been managing partner of Lee's Summit Animal Hospital since 1956. He has been active and held leadership roles in

Kristen Merrell Named Missouri Teacher of the Year Kristen Merrell, a teacher at Lee's Summit Elementary and R-7 School District 2011-12 Teacher of the Year, was named Missouri Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Merrell learned the news during a surprise announcement at her school on Aug. 23.

Is Perfect Really the Enemy of Good?

When it comes to doing business online, it really is. Online services change rapidly - most online strategies are outdated as soon as they are updated. Regardless of what your business does online - website, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ or others – don’t let ‘perfect’ become the enemy of a good and effective online strategy.

How can you create a good online strategy that supports your business and improves your profitability?

1. Find out what your customers expect online. Do they want information? Online purchasing or customer service? Develop your strategy around their expectations to benefit your bottom line.

2. Decide what your business needs. Integrate online tools with current operational systems to communicate with customers, find new ones, and help employees work more efficiently. The latest trend might not be your best solution.

3. Evaluate your current strategy.

Can customers find you online?

Does your website content change regularly? Is web traffic improving? Are social media

networks growing? Focus on improving the strategies that your customers want and employees need. Stop doing the rest.

4. Invest in what works. Some inexpensive online options cost more to maintain and don’t produce real results. Spend time and money on the tools that work for you.

Your Opportunity for “A Moment with the Mayor” Lee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads has a new program for residents and business owners to meet him and to chat about the City. “A Moment with the Mayor” is the new program debuting on Saturday, September 17, from 9–11 a.m. at Legacy Park Community Center, 901 NE Bluestem Drive, Lee’s Summit.

Individuals are encouraged to stop by the community center to chat one-onone and to enjoy complimentary coffee and fruit. The Mayor will distribute a free water bottle and magnet containing the City’s telephone numbers, while supplies last, to those who stop by the facility.

“I am excited to have an opportunity to sit down with the residents of our community to say hello and to address their questions about the City,” said Mayor Rhoads. “This is also an opportunity for members of the community to come to one of the City’s

premier Parks & Recreation facilities, Legacy Park Community Center.”

New Education Website Coming Soon When the City adopted their longrange strategic plan, Lee’s Summit 360°: Charting Tomorrow in 2009, a primary goal of the plan was to create a community-wide forum for collaboration on education-related issues. As a result, an inaugural Education Summit was held in June 2010. It brought together education stakeholders and engaged citizens from across Lee’s Summit to discuss education-related topics that affect the community overall.

From that summit, it became clear that a comprehensive communication and dissemination of education programs and resources available to residents was lacking. As a result, it was decided to create a community education website.

Once content on the site is substantially complete and a critical mass of programs have been entered, marketing will begin to the community and end-users of the site. Joplin Day of Service The members of the Lee’s Summit Chamber staff and the Board of Directors are heading down to Joplin on Tuesday, October 18 for a day of service.

Members Helping Members The money was part of a fundraiser held

by Paradise Park at the 2011 Flights of Fancy kite festival. The donation benefits students who need assistance purchasing books required for the upcoming semester.

"We are thankful to Paradise Park and the support they lend not only to the campus, but also the support they give our students in a time of need," Grogan said.

Chris Simon, general manager of Paradise Park, stands with MCC-Longview President Fred Grogan as he was presented a check for $650 dollars for the MCC-Longview Emergency Book Fund.

Paradise Park is one of Lee's Summit’s popular family entertainment centers and, along with its owner Jon Ellis, has been a big supporter of the annual Flights of Fancy kite festival and the college for many years.
