Chamber Members Travel to Washington, D.C.
A group of Lee’s Summit Chamber members and staff traveled to Washington, D.C., Sept. 20-22. Together, along with representatives from other state-wide chambers, they received a briefing from the U.S. Chamber and met with legislators to discuss issues important to Missouri businesses. Topics included transportation, the fiscal cliff and where we are headed, the upcoming November elections, Department of Labor’s overtime ruling and free trade (specifically the Trans Pacific Partnership), including what they mean and how they affect Missouri businesses. Healthy for the Holidays: Community Health Fair The Lee’s Summit Chamber is hosting the Community Health Fair in conjunction with the Holly Festival from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Bernard Campbell Middle School, 1201 NE Colbern Rd. The event is free and open to the public. The Community Health Fair consists of health information and free health screenings, including depression, body fat, blood pressure, muscle tension, bone density and visual acuity from area hospitals and healthfocused businesses. In addition to the Health Fair, the Holly Festival Craft Fair runs throughout the day, raising funds for the Lee’s Summit DARE program. Member Events & News 3rd Annual Celebrity Dinner & Roast for the Historical Society of Lee’s Summit Museum Fires Up October 26 The Historical Society of Lee’s Summit’s Celebrity Dinner & Roast is back, and this year Nick and Jennie Swearngin will be roasted and toasted for a good cause. The third annual event is a fundraiser for the Historical Society of Lee’s Summit Museum, a 501c3 non-profit and will be held 6:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26 at The Stanley. Kathy Smith, executive director of the Historical Society of Lee’s Summit says she and the Board were overwhelmed with the community support last year and are looking forward to an even bigger event this year. The casual evening, catered by Summit Hickory Pit, is a chance for guests to have some fun with a very special Lee’s Summit couple, Nick & Jennie Swearngin. Through the years, the Swearngins have defined altruism in Lee’s Summit. They have also spent quite a bit of time dishing “it” out. Be a part of seeing if they take can take it as well as they can give it.
The Celebrity Dinner & Roast also includes a silent auction and cash bar. There are limited seats available; tickets may be purchased for $65 each at the Historical Society of Lee’s Summit Museum on Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturdays from 10-4 p.m. with cash, check or charge or at Cameron’s Home Furnishings with cash or check. Member Events & News continued Lee’s Summit R-7 School District Approves Approximately 1.4-cent Increase in Tax Levy The Lee’s Summit R-7 School District Board of Education recently approved a slight property-tax increase amounting to 1.44 cents per $100 assessed valuation, when compared to the previous year’s tax rate. The increase in the tax rate was necessary to make up for the decrease in existing property values as determined by the county assessor. The Lee’s Summit R-7 tax rate for 2016-17 will be $5.9957 per $100 assessed valuation. The Board made the decision at its annual tax-rate hearing, held Sept. 22. The Missouri Constitution allows school districts to maintain a consistent level of property tax funding from year-to-year. When property values decrease, the tax rate increases. If property values increase, the tax rate decreases. For example, during the 2015-16 school year when property values increased by approximately 6 percent, the tax rate decreased by 14 cents. This chart shows the property value and tax rate changes over time.
