Fourth Annual Entrepreneurs in Motion Conference: Think Big, Grow Bigger!

The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce is highlighting the spirit of entrepreneurship by hosting the Fourth Annual Entrepreneurs in Motion (EIM) Conference on Tuesday, November 16, 2010. The EIM Conference is a partnership with Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) which boasts nearly 58,000 events throughout the world, involving nearly 11 million people. The EIM Conference is part of the Kansas City GEW network involving public and private entities that provide services, support and champion small and entrepreneurial business. The EIM Conference will host business professionals, experts, practitioners and elected officials who will come together to provide presentations on current trends and business topics, in-depth panel discussions, a business showcase, breakfast keynote with a high-level, successful entrepreneur and a closing network reception. This year’s keynote speaker is Elizabeth Demas. After losing her job with Sprint, she decided to put her MBA to real use and start her own business. Five years ago she opened a Licensed Avon Beauty Center. In that short time, her store has risen to become the number two store in the nation. Demas attributes her success to documenting, and then improving upon, the processes necessary to run and grow her business. Workshop topics include; Expand Your Circle of Influence, Surviving in a Sluggish Economy: Key Bankruptcy Considerations for a Small Business, Protect Your Brand in the Age of Social Media, Maximize Your Presence Through Search Engine Marketing, What’s Keeping Your Business from Reaching its Potential? and Maximizing Sales: Prospecting. You can register for the event online at lschamber.com under the Calendar of Events tab. Early-bird rates (expires Nov. 8) Member $35, Non-Member $70. After Nov. 8, Member $50, Non-Member $85. Questions about the event? Contact Mark Dickey at mdickey@lschamber.com. The EIM conference is sponsored by:

Bond Issue Hits the Ballot on November 2 The leadership of the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce and the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council (LSEDC) have both passed resolutions of support for the City of Lee’s Summit’s No-Tax-Increase General Obligation Bond Issue, which will be on the November 2, 2010 election ballot. The proposed $37.4 million bond issue has four questions and will fund capital improvements. Question 1 would upgrade the Police and Fire departments’ communications system; build a police firearms training facility; provide training, meeting and storage space; and update the police detention facility. Question 2 would provide sidewalk repairs and construction, as well as curb and gutter replacement.

Question 3 would realign and widen Strother Road, as well as improve the View High Drive/I-470 Intersection. Question 4 would extend Tudor Road from Douglas Street to Ward Road. “The Chamber Board is encouraging residents to vote ‘Yes’ on each of these questions,” said Chamber President, Nancy Bruns. “We strongly believe these issues are an integral component in supporting and fostering a vibrant economy, which ensures the safety of its citizens, and provides economic wealth and improved quality of life.” For more information about the bond issue, visit the City of Lee’s Summit’s website at cityofls.net or call 816-969-1000.

Today, a Day...Tomorrow a Lifetime "America Recycles Day” is a nationallyrecognized day scheduled on November 15 each year to encourage and raise awareness about recycling. In an effort to support “America Recycles Day,” the City of Lee’s Summit hosts an annual, internal "Clean Your Files" Day in November of each year to clean out their office spaces of unnecessary papers and clutter. The City encourages you to get involved and host your own "Clean Your

Files" Day event. If your office doesn’t currently subscribe to a recycling service; no problem! Just collect all of your recyclable items (office paper, newspaper, magazines, cardboard, paperboard, cans, plastic or glass drink containers) and take them to one of the City’s drop-off recycling centers (1951 NE Douglas Street or 2101 SE Hamblen Road). If your office needs help getting started, feel free to contact the City’s Environmental Programs

The New Year is Right Around the Corner. Are Your Computers Ready? Ready or not, 2010 is coming to a close and 2011 is upon us. This is a natural time to start wrapping up business financials, files and budgets and to get ready for the New Year. Don’t forget to include your computer and data in your end-ofyear planning. There are always regular system checks to be run. Computers/Server: Run a system check and defragment of each hard drive. There may be a program on your computer to do this, or there are many programs available for download. Make sure that anti-virus

software is up-to-date and running on all machines. Back up all hard drives and make sure your operating system is up-to-date. Files, Folders and Emails: Review your files to see what you permanently can delete. You should check with your legal, tax and HR professionals on what to keep and for how long, but anything that you don’t need is just taking up memory space. If you just aren’t quite ready to part with old files that you aren’t obligated to keep, move them to a flash or external drive to free up hard drive space. Review the files again in six

months. If you haven’t needed it by then, you are probably safe to delete. Budget: Be sure to include technology upgrades in your 2011 budget. Items such as software upgrades, new hardware or industry specific technology should be included. Don’t forget to include routine maintenance that needs to be performed in the coming year. Your trusted Information Technology partner can help you with your cleanup and build a plan so you can ensure you are covered in the coming year. by Kristen N. Johnson & Connie Smith, Ultreya Solutions Group a service of the Lee’s Summit Chamber’s Technology Committee
