Tablets in the Workforce Tablet style computers, so called for their compact size and touch screens, are very high on the cool factor, but are they right for your business? There are several pros and cons to this type of technology. First, they are portable and may have a better battery life than a laptop, but they are still mostly for personal/entertainment use, so they may not be compatible with all business software. They are flat, so the screen can be seen by several people at a time for a presentation, but they may be limited in the connection ports available for add-ons. A few more things to weigh if you are considering a tablet: • Does it have a removable hard drive? If not, you may not want to allow multiple users to share it. • Is the design rugged enough for everyday use? Especially if it’s on a construction site or exposed to the elements.
• Can it be cleaned? Important in medical offices and other places where instrumentation is regularly cleaned/disinfected. • Does it support the internet connection that you want to use? Can you rely solely on WiFi for your mobile workforce? • Can you use the touchscreen with gloves on? • Does it have ports for your business equipment – such as USB or SD card slots? • Does it support the applications and software that you need for your business? The sale of tablet computers is expected to increase six fold in the next three years, so we are likely to see versions that better support business needs. In the meantime, the Chamber Technology Committee would love to hear how you might already be using
Market Your Business to Sprint Employees Small businesses in the Kansas City area can earn access and free exposure to one of the area’s largest groups of consumers Sprint’s more than 7,000 employees. By doing business with Sprint, small businesses can register for Sprint’s Hometown Proud Preferred Businesses program (sprint.com/hometown)- a small business initiative that urges Sprint employees to buy locally, bolster the area economy and build local businesses by making the bulk of their purchases at local stores and shops. On a website exclusive to Sprint employees, the Hometown Proud
program lists a variety of different types of businesses. Employees can sort the list by company name, business type or location. Businesses that participate in this program have routinely added special discounts and offers to entice Sprint employees. For existing Sprint small business customers who want to participate in the program, registering for the site is as simple as filling out a short form at sprint. com/hometown. Remember to mention the Lee’s Summit Chamber as the reason you found out about the program, it’s the last question on the form.

Summit Bank of Kansas City sponsored a bracket entry contest where attendees could submit a College Basketball Bracket for a $5 donation to Blue Monday for a chance to win a cash prize. The event raised $300 in entries, which was donated to Blue Monday, an organization selected by the Young Professionals as one of their quarterly community service efforts. To learn more about Blue Monday, visit bluemondaykc.org.
