The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce is just weeks away from the 2017 Annual Gala, set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at The Pavilion at John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit. The Gala is one of the Chamber’s most popular events, including a plated dinner, live and silent auctions, photo fun, awards, dancing and more. This year’s “Midnight in Morocco” themed event will be an elegant and entertaining evening for everyone, featuring emcee Ryan Lefebvre of the Kansas City Royals and entertainment by Gorilla Dance Club (plan to get a sitter for the kids and strap on your dancing shoes). With nearly 500 members and guests in attendance, it is also a great opportunity to show your support and gain excellent exposure by donating to the enticing live and silent auctions. Donations are being accepted through Wednesday, Jan. 4 to be included in the auction program. Don’t have time to drop your donation off? Contact the Chamber to arrange for item pick up. You also can showcase your business by giving a bottle of wine or 4-pack of craft beer for the wine and beer pull. To make a donation, visit LSchamber.com/Gala2017 and complete a donation form. Ready to attend? Visit the calendar of events at LSchamber. com or call the office at 816.524.2424 to grab your seats before they sell out!

Special thanks to our sponsors:

Chamber and R-7 School District Accepting Teacher of the Year Nominations When you hear the phrase “outstanding teacher,” who comes to mind? You may want to nominate this person for the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Excellence In Teaching/R-7 Teacher of the Year Award. Twelve R-7 teachers will receive the Excellence In Teaching Award. Each award recipient will also become a finalist for the R-7 School District’s annual Teacher of the Year Award. The district’s Teacher of the Year goes on to compete in the Missouri State Teacher of the Year program. Any teacher, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, and any guidance counselor or library media specialist is eligible for the program. Due to the Missouri Teacher of the Year guidelines, guidance counselors and librarians are only eligible for the Excellence In Teaching Awards. They will not be considered for the Teacher of the Year Award since the state program is restricted to classroom teachers only. Former Excellence In Teaching Award winners are eligible to interview for the R-7 School District Teacher of the Year Award if nominated, although they would not be able to win the Excellence In Teaching Award again.

The recognized teachers will be selected by a committee composed of R-7 staff and representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and the community. The 12 Excellence In Teaching winners will be announced in late March and honored at an April 12 reception. The Teacher of the Year will be announced at the reception. Nomination forms will be sent home with R-7 students in January. Anyone wanting a form may also visit the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District website at lsr7.org and select the Excellence In Teaching and Teacher of the Year option. The deadline for nominations is January 26.

Collecting for a Cause...

HIRE ATTIRE CLOSET Professional attire in the workplace is paramount to how serious you are taken as an employee. The clothes a person wears to work affects how he/she is perceived by co-workers, superiors and customers. Join Chamber Young Professionals for the Hire Attire Closet professional clothing drive and donate professional attire you no longer wear, giving students at the Missouri Innovation Campus the opportunity to make a good first impression.

JANUARY 1-31, 2017 Drop clothes off at the Chamber office. The IRS, Publication 561, allows for charitable deductions of used clothing based on Fair Market Value. There is no exact IRS formula for FMV as the agency relies on subjective approximations. Donations are allowable through the Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation in-kind donation process.

Member Events & News Summit Flooring and Turf Receives WBE Certification After a career in real estate, Angela Grego launched Turf etc LLC which specialized in synthetic grass applications. Following a tremendous growth in sales and recognizing the need to expand both products and services to a broader territory, she formed Summit Flooring & Turf. The newly launched company moved into a much larger space in Lee’s Summit with a beautiful showroom, offices, warehouse and vehicle storage lot. A functional putting green welcomes all visitors to the business. Grego recently achieved becoming a certified WBE (Women Business Enterprise) by the human relations department of the City of Kansas City, Mo. This distinction recognizes Summit Flooring and Turf as a woman-owned, Kansas City-based installer and authorized supplier of

SYNLawn® synthetic grass for landscape, playground, pet, golf, roof, decks/patios, batting cages and athletic facilities. In accordance with the requirements for certification as a WBE, as defined by Chapter 3 Code of General Ordinance, it has been determined that Grego’s company qualifies for participation in the WBE Program, and that the work performed by her company will count toward contractual WBE goals. “After months of hard work, research, persistence, patience, mountains of paperwork, and a dose of good luck, we were able to achieve the monumental feat of being certified as a Women Business Enterprise,” said Angela Grego, owner. “Having completed this process, it would be my honor to mentor and empower other women in the area to start their own businesses as well!”

Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport Celebrates Dual-Ribbon Cutting On December 16, the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport celebrated ribbon cuttings for Lee’s Summit Road and Hangar 1. Both the completion of the Lee’s Summit Road construction project and the purchase of Hangar 1 (formerly known as the Air Charter building) represent significant milestones for the City of Lee’s Summit. Besides being located within close proximity to each other, these projects have the potential to contribute to Lee’s Summit’s economic development success, especially in the northern part of the community. With the increase in activity taking place at the Lee’s Summit Municipal Airport, and upcoming runway improvements, the City recognized the need for a facility that could accommodate the needs of both current and future business aircraft.
