PREVENTING INJURIES IN YOUR ATHLETE Sports play an important role in staying active and healthy, especially for young athletes. As kids begin to hit the playing fields, it’s important to remind them that aches and pains might signal an undiagnosed sports injury, and “playing through the pain” could make an undetected injury even worse.

There are two categories of sports injuries: acute and overuse. Acute injuries are sudden and typically occur from a single traumatic event such as a fall or collision. Common examples of acute injuries include dislocated shoulders, collar bone fractures and sprains. Overuse injuries are the most common and most complicated to diagnosis. These result when repetitive traumas consist over time and begin to affect joints, muscles, bones and tendons. These can include injuries such as Achilles tendinitis, tennis elbow and shin splints.

Oftentimes the initial aches and pains felt during the progression of an injury are overlooked by young athletes. It’s essential to teach them about the continued page 12

importance of informing a coach, athletic trainer or parent of their pain, because undiagnosed injuries become more severe in the long run. Signs that an athlete is playing too hard and should talk to a physician include: • Inability to put weight on injured body part, such as ankle or knee • Experiencing severe joint or muscle stiffness • Pain when running or walking • Persistent swelling of injured body part such as ankle, knee, foot or shoulder Taking some precautions can help keep kids safe on the field or on the court. In addition to not ignoring the pain, young athletes should follow these safety tips: • Don’t skip the warm-up or cool-down.

• Make time for low impact exercises such as walking or biking before or after practice.

• Practice strength training and stretching.

• During stretching, be safe and effective - hold the pose for 10-12 seconds and don’t push the body beyond the point of resistance.

• Staying hydrated is key to minimizing muscle cramps. If the athlete feels thirst, they’ve waited too long to consume fluids.

• Check equipment before play and ensure all necessary protective gear is worn (helmet, mouth guard, cleats, pads, etc.).

• If possible, play more than one position or try new sports during the off-season. This will help prevent overuse injuries.

• If any pain or discomfort develops, reduce the duration and intensity of play to avoid injury or burnout. If the pain continues or worsens, consult a physician.

When participating in sports, it’s important for athletes, parents and coaches to recognize when an injury may start to occur or has already, and understand the proper steps to take once identified, to ensure athletes stay safe, healthy and in the game!

CARING FOR LOVED ONES WITH DEMENTIA “Dementia” can be a frightening word that brings to mind other words and feelings, like vulnerability and loss. Dementia is a term used to describe a collection of symptoms caused by a number of disorders. Alzheimer’s disease is the most familiar, but is just one possible cause of dementia. According to a report produced by the Alzheimer’s Association, 14 percent of Americans over 71 years of age have some form of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60-80 percent of those cases.

When you are the caregiver, or care partner, for someone you love with dementia, the underlying cause is probably less important to you, as the approaches to successfully care for your loved one are essentially the same.

There are a lot of people out there providing care with little or no training. In 2013, unpaid family and friends provided approximately 17.7 billion hours of care to those with dementia in America (AlzheimersAssociation.org). This is an overwhelming task for so many. People with dementia can be very angry, demanding, needy or resistant to help, which is exhausting for caregivers to deal with 24 hours a day, seven days a week. continued page 15

Understanding the physical reasons for these behaviors and learning the best approaches to deal with them can make life so much easier and more enjoyable for everyone. People suffering with dementia are doing the best they can with what the physical changes in their brains allow. As the brain fails, abilities are lost. These people cannot remember some things, they often cannot control what they say, and they cannot always make important decisions. It isn’t a choice they make, it is an ability they physically no longer have. However, other abilities do remain, and focusing on these can continue to make life a wonderful experience.

When offering care, knowledge is power. You can find resources on the internet and through elder care communities. Participating in educational and support groups is another way to learn more and develop a greater network of people who understand what you go through. "The role of diet in gastrointestinal disorders is the key to a better quality of life," says Mallory. Teaching patients how to make small changes that fit into their lifestyle is essential to better health. Mallory is able to see a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, including gastroparesis, irritable bowel disease, diverticulitis, gastritis, food allergies and celiac disease. In May 2014, Mallory was recognized by the Kansas City Dietetic Association as Missouri's Young Dietitians of the Year. In April 2015, she received Young Dietitian of the Year award-Kansas City from the Missouri Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Mallory graduated with her master’s degree in dietetics and nutrition from University of Kansas Medical Center.

Get comfortable. If you're tense on the exam table, tell the doctor or nurse what would help you relax. If you'd like a nurse, friend, or family member there, let the doctor know.

Be honest. Topics like sex or illegal drug use may be tough to discuss, but your doctor needs to know about them to give you the right care.

Keep in mind, your doctor cannot discuss anything you confide without your permission. Having a friend or family member there may make it easier.

Take time. The better you're able to explain your concerns, the better your doctor can advise you about them. Stay focused, but don't rush through a symptom if giving more information could be more helpful for your doctor.

Ask follow-up questions. If you don't understand your diagnosis or treatment, speak up. If you don't feel that you can follow through with a treatment, find out if there are other options. If you need someone who speaks your preferred language, let your doctor know.
