Our overarching sentiment as we look back on 2022 is gratitude.
After two years of near-constant change, 2022 gave us a chance to breathe, take stock, return to a greater sense of normalcy, and truly appreciate the people around us. The world doesn’t look like 2019 anymore, but it no longer looks like 2020, either. We are not only adapting to the “new normal,” but also thriving as we continue to explore new ways of working and collaborating. We are engaging with our communities, growing, having important conversations, and doing great work.
Like most years, 2022 brought us challenge, changes, and celebrations. We now share the planet with eight billion people; what solutions can we bring to an interconnected society? How can we work together to enrich our communities, however we define them? What can LS3P contribute as we tackle complex issues from equity to climate change?
In 2022, we were deliberate about listening. We know that change doesn’t happen overnight, but we are proud of our commitment to continuous improvement, and we are sincerely grateful to work alongside team members who share our foundational values of excellence, integrity, empowerment, collaboration, balance, stewardship, and caring. We thank you for choosing to be a part of this worldclass team, and we thank you for a very successful year!
collaboration.
One (even bigger and better!) Firm
We were delighted to welcome two new offices to the firm in April! Following years of successful partnerships with TFF Architects & Planners, LLP of Greensboro and PFA Architects, P.A., of Asheville, mergers with these firms expanded LS3P’s footprint in the Triad and western North Carolina. Growing from 9 offices to 11 was an exciting change for us, and these offices have quickly become integral to the life of the firm.

Digging Deeper
Culture Amp
The tumultuous worldwide events of recent years have helped to bring important issues to the forefront. Within the firm in 2022, we encouraged productive conversations and invested in tools for communication and transparency. We launched a detailed, anonymous survey through Culture Amp to measure engagement, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate successes.
We conducted a Town Hall to share our initial round of results and discuss tough questions in an open forum; as we process upwards of 19,000 individual comments, we will share additional layers of information and work towards concrete plans for continuous improvement.
We are proud of our high-level initial findings, including:
91% recommend LS3P as a great place to work
90% of team members are proud to work for LS3P
89% feel their work contributes to the goals of LS3P
Our JEDI team (below) shifted their focus to specific initiatives outlined in the 2020 D+I Strategic Plan, attempting to tackle complex issues related to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Some of their accomplishments from the last year include:

Sponsored and participated in the Clemson NOMAS conference in Charleston

— Held Firmwide Round tables about:
Urban Equity
Normalizing Conversations around Mental Health

Professional Licensure & Registration

Congratulations to the team members who reached new professional heights in 2022!

Our Sweetest New Additions
Welcome to the newest, smallest, most adorable members of the LS3P team!

We will miss having Ernie Langston in our Wilmington office, but we look forward to hearing about your retirement adventures!
congratulations!

The
retirement of our Chairman Emeritus Thom Penney, FAIA, was an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable career of our former Chairman | President | CEO.
Thom first worked at the firm as a high school student, before attending Clemson University and graduating with Honors with both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Architecture. He joined the firm full-time in 1974, served as CEO from 1989 to 2020, served as President from 1989-2019, and served as Board Chair from 2012 until September 2022 when he was named Chair Emeritus.
Under his leadership, LS3P grew substantially, from one office in Charleston into a nationally recognized architecture firm with eleven offices, over 400 employees, and over 650 design awards. His professional achievements include serving as the 79th National President of the American Institute of Architects in 2003, receiving the AIA South Carolina Medal of Distinction in 2007, and being inducted into the Clemson University College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities Hall of Fame in 2019.
Thom is the quintessential ‘citizen architect,’ and I am proud to consider him a true mentor and steadfast friend. His service to our firm and the profession has created far-reaching impacts for our firm, our communities, and the profession of architecture. His vision and leadership have made LS3P the firm we are today, and we are honored to call him our Chairman Emeritus.

empowerment.
Passing the Baton
We were excited to announce that our Chief Practice Officer Katherine Peele, FAIA, was named Board Chair on September 7, 2022. Katherine joined Boney Architects in 1988 after graduating as valedictorian of her class from NC State University with a Bachelor of Architecture, summa cum laude. She became Raleigh Office Leader in 2005, joined the Board of Directors in 2010, and was named Executive Vice President of Practice in September 2012 and Chief Practice Officer in 2019.
Katherine served as the 2000 President of AIA North Carolina and was elevated to AIA Fellowship in 2003 in recognition of her extensive expertise and commitment to educational facility design; in 2019 she received the AIA North Carolina Gold Medal. In 2009, she was awarded the William H. Dietrick Service Medal by the AIA North Carolina Chapter for her service to the profession; in 2017, she was appointed by the Governor to serve a five-year term on the North Carolina Board of Architecture, where she most recently served as President. We look forward to her leadership and to many more great things to come!
Katherine embodies LS3P’s Values, Mission, and Vision, and has long been a driving force in the firm’s success. Her reputation as an outstanding designer, leader, and advocate for the industry comes from her decades of service to the firm and the profession, and we are honored to work with her as the new Chair of LS3P’s Board.
marc marchant CEOI had just been out of school for a year, working for what was then Boney Architects in Wilmington. The firm decided to open a Raleigh office and I raised my hand to move. Paul Boney asked me to look for office space; I had zero experience in even knowing how to start this process! However, Paul entrusted me and backed my decision on the office location I picked.

I will always be grateful for that opportunity to stretch myself, knowing that I had the full support of the firm behind me!

Laying a Strong Foundation
In December, we launched The LS3P Foundation with the announcement of the founding Board Members, Treasurer, and Secretary.

The LS3P Foundation’s mission is to support leading design thinkers in advancing research, strategies, and technologies to promote transformative change, elevate human well-being, improve environmental resilience, increase economic mobility, and advance equity across the Southeast. In support of its mission, the Foundation will award grants to universities, companies, and organizations in the region to advance impactful research.

The LS3P Foundation Board of Directors

Our Leadership by Design Fellow Program was founded in 2017 to offer a focused view of the firm’s practice from a leadership perspective; each year, participants meet for intensive sessions which cover a broad range of topics from business to practice.

healthcare
2022 saw an intentional shift towards larger work for the Healthcare PAC, and the lessons learned for landing and delivering these projects. To win the more significant MOB and hospital projects we focused on the continued positioning of LS3P’s HC PAC as an industry thought leader. This positioning has included pursuing and winning local, state and national design awards for our HC work, presenting at state and national HC architecture conferences, publishing articles in industry magazines, participating on state and national HC design committees with a vertical cross section of colleagues, and spotlighting our incredible staff and their contributions to projects and the profession. We have also focused on delivering master plans for hospital and MOB campuses, which ideally leads to designing the buildings on multi-project campuses. On these master plans, we have joyfully collaborated with our Urban Environments colleagues, and together our PACs are beginning to set a new standard in defining healing environments from the patient room to the cityscape.
Practice Advancement Centers 48
ate learn evolve in
Our Practice Advancement Centers continued to serve as a firmwide resource in gathering and disseminating knowledge and building relationships across offices.

higher education
The collaboration between offices and sectors was a huge push for the Higher Ed PAC this year, and we are really starting to see our expertise shine through. We have so many talented and specialized team members across the firm, and it is exciting to see all the new partnerships growing and transforming how we can support our higher educational clients.
These partnerships increased even more with the addition of the Greensboro and Asheville offices. Our bench of higher education experience and client history grew deeper, resulting in several new projects for the firm such as the Guilford Technical Community College Aviation Center and The Montreat College Master Plan. Both of these efforts came from great client relationships as well as a strong team that highlighted our unique personnel and joint team capabilities.
Higher education project opportunities remain strong, and 2022 was a heavy proposal response year, with 72 proposals submitted and 35 shortlist interviews, resulting in 15 project wins! This win rate exceeds industry standards for competitive open pursuits and speaks to our targeted approach.

We also held our first ever in-person HE PAC retreat in Greensboro, NC. The retreat was a great way for our team to get to know one another, discuss where we are as a PAC, and envision where we aspire to be. The group toured three LS3P projects, and we enjoyed a few collegiate-themed competitions along the way.
k-12 education
In 2022, the K-12 PAC turned our focus to concentrating on the three Cs: Community, Colleagues, and Clients. Each of our offices have continued to embrace the “one firm” mentality to best serve our clients around the southeast. With the growth of LS3P’s new offices, the K-12 practice team welcomed new members and embraced our culture of collaboration.
In collaboration with LS3P’s Knowledge Teams, the K-12 PAC led a research effort that will be an internal and external resource to advance educational learning environments. We are excited to share these resources among our teams and clients throughout 2023.
Multiple team members had the opportunity to attend educational summits and conferences, in addition to providing thought leadership to others by speaking at these events; subject matter included early childhood education and outdoor learning. Additionally, the K-12 teams was proud to showcase a few of our newest schools through A4LE tours of Garinger High School, Ridge Spring-Monetta K-12, and Hendersonville High School.
All of our hard work seems to be paying off in the best way: at the start of the 2022 school year 6,185 students walked into a new school that was designed by LS3P’s K-12 team!

workplace

Our Workplace PAC had a very successful year! We broke ground on the 600 South Tryon Office Tower at Legacy Union in Charlotte, and we began designing the next phase of the Live Oak Bank campus in Wilmington. Our Piedmont Town Center project won a Great Suburban Design award at Charlotte’s Urban Design Awards, and the Charlotte Business Journal named Vantage South End (Spectrum Properties) as the Top Mixed-Use Development, and the Honeywell HQ at Legacy Union (Lincoln Harris) as the Top Office Building in its annual “Heavy Hitters” list. Throughout the year, we held quarterly sector leader strategy discussions to celebrate successes and lay the groundwork for future opportunities.
urban environments
In 2022 UE, the Urban Environments team essentially built an innovative, one-of-a-kind practice from scratch, starting with three UE members at the beginning of the year and ending with eight (including Olivia Gray as Urban Environments Marketing Manager). Together, we won the comprehensive plan for the Town of Kiawah, brought hope to the Idora community in Ohio with a one-of-a-kind master plan and supplemental animation, completed the Myrtle Beach Arts and Innovation Vision book, and collaborated with a number of practice areas across multiple cities to deliver innovative ideas firmwide.

Knowledge Teams
Our Knowledge Teams continued to strive for advancements in our processes and in our work.
Alchemy Knowledge Team members and Design Leaders focused on advancing our design solutions through better design processes. Design Leaders advanced their firm-wide Enhanced Mentorship Program by engaging with a new pledge class of 20 emerging and young professionals on a regular basis. The sessions culminated in two large group sessions at the end of the year.
The 2022 Magic Glue Awards were the biggest yet, as there were 35 submissions from 8 offices. This year’s selection were juried by Jassen Callender, Professor and Jackson Program Director at Mississippi State and several select students. The Magic Glue Awards reward exemplary storytelling as part and parcel with our design process.
For the second year, Design Leaders participated as NOMAS design team advisors to students from SCAD. The Barbara G. Laurie National Student Design Competition studied cultural and commercial programs to advance community while stitching a neighborhood in Nashville bifurcated by an expressway.
Brian Wurst and Danny Adams delivered the LS3P lecture “Practicing In and Of Place” at N.C. State School of Architecture in the spring as part of their pursuit of new design talent that included attending career fairs at Clemson, Virginia Tech, and N.C. State and virtually at Washington University and University of Pennsylvania.
In 2022, the Advance Knowledge Team continued to support firmwide efforts towards quality management. The team shared ADVANCE advice Memos on topics including Emergency Responder Radio Communications (ERRC), the top 10 “dos and don’ts” for electronic communications, terms and conditions of consultant proposals, and supporting fire barriers (with the excellent title “IIB or NOT IIB Protected.”) Advance also conducted regular (and very popular) CA Round Tables, reorganized the Practice Resources section of Dashboard Knowledge pages, and assisted with the development of the Project Roadmap to serve as the successor to the Project Planning Guide. The team, along with Digital Practice, presented UNIFI training and updated UNIFI details, and began the process of updating the Project Folder Filing Structure, the DDLA (Digital Data Letter Agreement) and an LS3P standard for sheet revision pre- and post-bid/award. Finally, again in association with Digital Practice, the team uploaded additional apps on LS3P federated iPads for field use.
The integrate Knowledge Team launched a high-performance design team in 2022, with Amie Blankenship serving as LS3P’s Green Building Specialist and Bekim Sejdiu as Sustainability Specialist. We integrated the AIA Framework for Design Excellence into OPR for project kick-off, and released the first two books of the Energy + Architecture series, Higher Education and K-12. This year we sponsored AIA NC’s Climate Adaptive Design Symposium in Asheville, built capacity for modeling embodied carbon in building construction, and worked on our first Fitwel and Living Building Challenge CORE projects. Integrate hosted a team retreat focusing on envelope testing and LEED EB in the mountains of South Carolina in November, and Isela Martinez (ILM) and Kaitie Harrigan (GSO) represented LS3P at Greenbuild 2022 in San Francisco.
This year, the Image Knowledge Team divided into four Task Forces to deepen our knowledge and expertise. Our Holistic Task Force focused on our Interior Designer profiles, collecting data from all of our interior designers to help us build firmwide relationships. We hope to create mentorship programs, showcase designers though internal and external “getting to know you” segments, and strengthen marketing responses. Our Standards Task Force focused on updating UNIFI with our BIM teams, beginning with furniture, looking at how we transition from REVIT standards to the elements we actually use - elements that work for rendering and contract documentation across multiple sectors we serve. Our Metrics Task Force looked at ways to turn our quantitative data collection into qualitative data, and capture usage testimonials from our clients/projects to create a database of lessons learned (the good, the bad, the ugly). Our Perception Task Force navigated our eve- expanding team of Licensed Interior Designers. As NC registrations have opened, we are working to maintain a database of who is licensed and where, and are navigating the new laws in this arena allowing licensed professionals to seal drawings. Our main goals have been to set an example for other firms and be an advocate for the process. As a whole group, we worked together on the K-12 Design Toolkit “Design for Flexibility.” We continue to work with the BIM team to create better REVIT resources specific to Interior Design, and also began an initiative with HR to provide an additional onboarding document for new Interior Design hires to help navigate the vast amount of information and resources we have available to us.
The Ignite Team welcomed several new members to the group in 2022. One of our primary projects for the year was helping to shepherd the K-12 Toolkit, in collaboration with the other Knowledge Teams and members of the K-12 PAC. This toolkit will include five different volumes, each focused on current trends and best practices in school design. Combined, this “box set” will be a complete how-to guide for school systems that are beginning the design of new (or renovated) schools. Our intent is to include the toolkit digitally on our website but also to print hard cover books for distribution. It is hoped that this project will be completed by the end of the first quarter, 2023.
Other projects underway include the creation of a client introduction and guide on cross-laminated construction as well as the continued support and vetting of our “Design-inKind” projects.
We are excited about the new role of Katherine Ball as the firm’s “Practice Research Strategist” and looked forward to working with her on future research projects around innovation.
The Ignite Team continues to welcome ideas from across the firm, on ways that Ignite can advance our practice, improve collaboration and foster innovation at LS3P!

Fresh Starts and Evolutionary Growth

As we welcomed a new year, leaving 2021 and entering 2022, it felt like a fresh start. The previous year’s uncontrollable fluctuation of world public health, politics, social change, and personal introspection seemed to slowly melt away so that we could forge a future of new paths and opportunities. At the midpoint of Evolution25, we began to slip into our stride, getting comfortable with new strategic roles; new practice groups; and investments in design excellence, expertise, innovation, and collaborative engagement.
This past year we concentrated on continued growth in sectors and markets, while maintaining our focus on design excellence, leveraging collaboration for expertise-driven solutions, and seeking balance and stability to foster equilibrium and mental health. We welcomed new team members in Greensboro and Asheville and are better positioned to serve the entire North Carolina region by sharing our deep talents across the firm. This investment in evolutionary growth has been fantastic! We discussed and explored better ways to demonstrate and live our Values, with intentional emphasis on Balance, Empowerment, and Stewardship. We also explored leadership concepts to connect purpose and impact to our work, remove obstacles to achieve professional growth, and share the opportunity to lead as an organization. These themes will continue to advance us as individuals and a collective firm body.

Most importantly in 2022, we shared and listened more than ever before through academy, surveys, and town halls. Through these pathways, we have recognized the best of what we offer to each other, our clients, and our community. We also learned that there is room to grow and improve as we work to find out how we best innovate, how we can better collaborate, and how we can celebrate and take care of each of our valued colleagues. I am excited for the work ahead that will sharpen our skills to be the best that we can be.
We are a firm of great value, uniquely designed, and purposefully made. We are poised to continue our good work, our service to our community, and our genuine care and love for each other. 2022 was an exceptional year in the continued evolution of our firm. Thank you for what you do and for continuing to look to the future with the promise that the best is yet to come.
For that we are grateful,
