The Future of Key Club ________________________________________ A

When I first heard of Key Club, I wasn’t quite sure about what it entailed; there were many questions as to what it promoted and did for our school. However, when I attended my first club meeting my sophomore year, I knew it would be an extracurricular activity that I would really enjoy participating in. In fact, I loved it so much that I was convinced to run for the treasurer position for the following school year. I was luckily elected and learned so much more about my position and the “behind-the-scenes” action.

I have never regretted becoming a leader of our school’s Key Club. It has been such an amazing opportunity to develop stronger relationships with our other officers and club members. However, now that this school year is coming to a close, it is time for me to think about my future, particularly with Key Club.

Traditionally, nearly halfway through the second semester of the school year our officers hold an election to allow club members to run for the upcoming school year’s officer positions. There is a designated club meeting where all candidates give speeches to try to sway the voters in their favor. After all speeches have been given, club members fill out a form and elect who they want for each position.

It’s an overall efficient process that allows members to take action and make an impact in the community.

With election season right around the corner, I have had to think strongly about my future with Key Club. I love being a leader and making a positive difference in our community, so I definitely see myself as an officer for my last and final year of high school.

Being the club’s treasurer has become one of the best leadership experiences.

I have developed more responsibility, time management skills, courage, and compassion for others- all great qualities to have as a leader. It has motivated me to run for other leadership positions as well. Alongside running as treasurer (again) and service coordinator for Key Club, I also decided to run for Editor in Chief for the school’s yearbook.

Without Key Club and my experience as an officer, I wouldn’t have had the confidence and skills necessary to uphold such a difficult position.

I love Key Club and the positive atmosphere our club members create when they go out and serve others.

Being an officer has allowed me to see it happen first-hand and encourage others to make a difference. I intend to have a future in Key Club, not only as a member, but a leader. It has been such an inspirational journey, and I definitely do not want it to end here.

K-Kids is a student-led program in which elementary school students are able to begin developing a strong character and passion for service.

Circle K International is a student-led service organization for college students.

Builders Club is a club for middle school students. Members are able to learn selfconfidence and grow as leaders through teamwork and goal-setting.

Aktion Club is a service club for adults with disabilities. Members develop confidence and self-esteem through leadership roles and helping others.

Key Club is a service organization for high school students that provides members with opportunities to serve and develop character and leadership.

Kiwanis International is a service organization comprised of adult volunteers who serve globally.

HUMANS OF TEXAS-OKLAHOMA

Today marks my last semester in high school, and I can say it’s been a pretty great journey. All the memories I’ve made, all the tests I’ve crammed for, and all the laughs I’ve had will definitely make these last years before going to college that much more memorable. Even so, I can still recall my first Key Club experience as if it were yesterday. I had taken my first step on the barren parking lot, waiting for the volunteer coordinator to instruct us on how my very first volunteering event would go. It had only been my freshman year and it was a pretty exciting day for me to be out of the house for once, not knowing what “The Music Alley Festival” was, nor knowing anyone else who would be attending the event also. While I didn’t know many of my friends attending the event, I still had made an effort to talk to other members in the club as we were awaiting the coordinator’s instructions.

As I rose from the cement pavement and anxiously stepped forward to a girl wearing a school t-shirt, I began to introduce myself and ask a little about the event. To my surprise, she had actually volunteered at the event before and sort of showed me the ropes of what to do when we had assigned our roles.

Even then, throughout the last few years I’ve been in Key Club, we’ve had the chance to do some pretty amazing things such as helping those affected by COVID, or making care packages for orphan children in Eastern Europe.

Although not all of the volunteering events we’ve completed weren’t so largescale at the time and some of it being virtual due to the pandemic, it was just the fact that we helped brighten someone else’s day is what mattered most. It was still pretty rewarding as you get this feeling of, “I just made someone’s life a little bit better today!” No amount is ever too small and no effort to help others is ever wasted.

Even as my Key Club years come to a close and I begin to open up a new chapter in life, I’ll never forget those memorable times I’ve had throughout these past four years; all the laughs I’ve had, all those tears we shed, and the new family I’ve met along the way. I wouldn’t ever trade what I’ve gained from this volunteering organization for the world.

It’s through this small little club where everyone thinks we make keys that I was able to make new friends and get out of my comfort zone. Even as I leave the nest and branch away from these people I now call family, I’ll still cling onto those memories and the two sayings that have been engraved into my mind throughout these past years; “Caring - our way of life,” and the iconic, “Better than good.”
