Running. Jumping. Dancing. Talking. Screaming. Giving. Smiling. The growing sound of splashes from the dunk tank, the cheers as a courageous soul dropped into crisp waters beneath their feet, the nostalgic bass-boosted tunes that created a new rhythm for my heart to follow. The natural music of the world filled my ears in a way it had never done before.

It was April 21, and I had escaped from my school just to find myself at another. I was there with many of my friends; our hands itched as we searched the premises for a task to be assigned to. This was my first volunteer experience with so many Key Club members there to support me. Not only that, I suppose it was my first experience interacting with so many unknown members in my community, and a memorable experience it was.

I, along with a few of my friends, volunteered to manage the concession stand. It was a simple job: set up the display of snacks, help any potential customers, and do our best to sell some Cora Spencer merchandise. Once the event began, the crowd quickly multiplied. It felt as though I was teleporting left and right trying to keep up with exhausted parents and equally excited children. Yet at the same time, I felt so still. There, arms linked with Vikki and Taylor as the Kidz Bop version of “Put Your Records On” blasted at a booth behind us, I felt like I belonged. Never before had I felt so close to my community.

As I listened, I began to realize how greatly I missed the sound of absent-minded joy, similar to sounds from my own childhood. I looked around and saw young kids running after each other, racing to be the first at the face painting station. In the distance, I saw the bouncy house topple over from the weight of so many children jumping inside, squealing as they struggled to keep their balance.

Next to me, I saw my friends dancing, hand in hand while they waited for someone to come up to our stand. I found myself talking to new people; most notably, there was this one kid who had been lingering next to our stand for a good portion of the bash. I learned that his name was Allen, he would turn eleven years old on the following Saturday, and he really enjoyed Naruto. I heard the screams of teachers who had volunteered to be dunked in the dunk tank which mashed with the satisfied yells of the children who had sent these very teachers to their “doom”.

I saw another group of Key Club volunteers giving kids glowstick sunglasses and bracelets. I saw smiles.

Everywhere. On parents, children, volunteers, and on me.

Before, I was a solo volunteer; I didn’t really volunteer with other people and the events I chose typically didn’t involve as much movement as this one did.

However, through Key Club, I believe I’ve found a new appreciation for community-based events. I believe my heart will never forget the sugar rush, the rhythm of the music, the bouncing of my soles. I will never forget the chirping cicadas as I walked towards my ride and away from a quieting community. My community.
