President s Letter Lake Ridge Key Clubbers!

The first 20-25 hours of service check is on January 16th! We’ve decided to do because the total hours each member needs to have according to Key Club International is 50 so in order to keep us adhering to International standards, we’re checking on half of your progress. If you don’t get enough hours, then an officer will discuss with you your hours and the next steps to help you try to continue your key club journey! Next up is ELECTIONS! Wanna run for ANY of the office positions? Elections will be held sometime in February so stay on the lookout for more info to become an officer.

Last but definitely not least, the Texas-Oklahoma Key Club District Convention is in April!!! This is a convention solely for Key Clubbers in ALL of Texas and Oklahoma that has informational forums about the ins-and-outs of Key Club, awards and contest for clubs, and a whole lot of fun with fellow key clubbers you’ve never met! All elected, including newly elected, officers from our club go to DCON (another reason to run for a position!) and this year we are taking the club member that has the most hours by the end of February to DCON. I encourage everybody to get the most because DCON is such an amazing experience. (PSA: If you’re trying to go for this, make sure to save up some money because although our club fund will pay for most of it, DCON is still expensive!)

Lots of exciting things are coming up so make sure to keep coming to the club meetings to get the most information needed.

Also, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to text the remind or to stop me or any of the other officers in the hallways. We are always happy to help. And always remember to serve your home, school, and community!

THE HEART OF SERVICE BY: GILLIANA TAWARAN, DIVISION 39S

By definition, the term “service” is known as the action of helping or doing work for someone. What lies beneath the superficial, however, is much more complex.

To the average citizen, a prime example of service to others may be demonstrated in large gestures such as at a soup kitchen or local animal shelter.What most people fail to realize though, is that the value of service is not in what the act is, but rather the sheer intention behind that act—be it big or small.

This came to my attention only a few days ago when I was scrolling through my social media feed and came across a post that described someone doing an act of service for a homeless man and later becoming bothered by the fact that the man did not say thank you or display any sign of gratitude. The post then went on to say “...then I examined my conscience and asked myself... was I doing this for my own self benefit?

Was I doing this to make myself feel better or out of kindness? Think about why you do what you do.” The content of this particular post really stuck with me and I want to share this with you because I believe it may have a profound impact on the way we view our own service.

Service isn’t about how big or small your act of kindness is. Service isn’t even about you, really. It’s about being selfless enough to become aware of the needs of people around you who may need your help.

More importantly, it’s in how you do it. If you serve with a willing and open heart and mind, that is more than anyone could ask for. That is the true heart of service. An act of service can be as simple as asking your teacher if they need help with anything or lending a helping hand to a classmate. As long as you’re doing it with love.

We serve because we love what we do. We serve without asking anything in return. So I encourage you, fellow Key Clubbers, to examine your own conscience and ask yourself: Am I doing this for my own self benefit or am I doing this with a heart of service?

SERVICE ACTIVITIES UNICEF

UNICEF works to help children all around the world and is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of their rights.

CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK Children's Miracle Network treats 62 kids every minute — that's more than 10 million kids a year. Their mission is to generate funds and awareness programs for their 170 member hospitals.

MARCH OF DIMES

March of Dimes works to improve the health of mothers and babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

THIRST PROJECT

The Thirst Project works to build a socially-conscious generation of young people to END the global water crisis.

NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNINGS! BY: ALAN PHAN, DIVISION 39S

Three, two, one! Happy New Year! As 2018 comes to a close and 2019 dawns upon us, we’re faced parties, montages of everyone’s year, but most of all new year’s resolutions! A new year is a great way to get a fresh start and begin something amazing! We as a club have some amazing plans for the new year!

To begin with, we as officers have agreed to be a little stricter and focus on what Key Club is all about; service! How will we see to accomplish this? We have planned to thin out the club by “letting go” members that have not gotten a specific amount of hours. While this may seem a little harsh, we are very reasonable about this. Doing this will result in a smaller but more dedicated group of people in our club.

Secondly, we plan to hold officer elections in February for the year of 2019-2020! Elections are a happy and sad time. I’m so excited to see which optimistic members will become my new co-officers for the upcoming school year and I as well will be running for a different position! But elections also mean that this year’s seniors will be leaving for college soon. Nevertheless, I’m happy to see more members become officers.

Furthermore, the officers and I plan to compete for some of the contests at DCON. Some of the contests that we are competing for are the Club Video award, Website award, Traditional Scrapbook award, and a few more! We plan on accomplishing all these projects by starting when school starts back up. I am in charge of the Club Video and I am preparing for this by bringing my camera to volunteering events to get some footage. I often get looks when I’m lugging around a DSLR camera during a volunteer event but it will be worth it once we get our end result.

Lastly, in April we have our District Convention! I am so thrilled for this year’s DCON because our club has worked so hard and what way to celebrate hard work then to celebrate with other clubs throughout the district!

In conclusion, 2019 is going to be a busy year for our club but we plan to put our heart and soul into whatever projects we have planned. I wish everyone good luck to whatever 2019 has in store for them. Happy New Year!

Hey Key Club!

Tis the season to be jolly! I hope everyone is having an awesome winter break and getting much needed time to rest ourselves as we gear up for the new year. This year, our Key Club board is more than ready to dive into even more service and all that comes with it.

As we step into the new year with this mindset, we hope everyone is on the same page. This year is all about improving not only ourselves, but moreover, the people around us. Personally, I think the key word for 2019 is empower. It is in striving for self empowerment and more importantly, empowering others that we will truly be able to serve others with a genuine heart of service, just as I mentioned previously in my article on pages You guys are amazing and I have so much confidence that you will have no problem fulfilling your own new year’s resolutions as well as our Key Club resolution which is to immerse ourselves in the service of others and of course, to do it with love.
