Hey Key Club!

As spring break approaches and the month of February draws to a close, I hope you are staying strong and pulling through to the end!

I am so excited for our upcoming events as well as LEDCON as our Key Club board is beginning to prepare for the competitions and gather our ideas to bring to our district table.

This year, we are bringing not one, but two additional Key Club members to LEDCON! This is our very first year bringing members to the district convention and I am so excited to be able to announce it. When I was a freshman on our Key Club board, our club could only dream of achieving this milestone, so I am so humbled and happy to be a part of this today. The members we are bringing either hold the most club hours in all of the club, or sold the most gummy bear boxes, so a big congratulations to those individuals! Thank you for all of your hard work!

EVERY SECOND THURSDAY OF THE MONTH: Nursing Home Bingo 7 - 8 PM at 1402 E Broad Street, Mansfield, TX 76063 You will be assisting the nursing home residents play bingo. Go to the front door and tell them that you’re there for bingo. Look for Milo!

ONE TIME EVENTS FRIDAY, MARCH 13 - SATURDAY, MARCH 14: Pickle Parade Time depends on the shift at Historic Downtown Mansfield Depending on the shift that you sign up for, you will be assisting with the kids area, pet parade, keg races, T-shirt booths, Pickle Run, etc.

SATURDAY, MARCH 28: Prairie Paws Adoption Center 2 - 4 PM at 2222 W Warrior Trail, Grand Prairie, TX 75052 You will be playing with the pets, assisting kennel maintenance, training the animals, etc. Spaces are limited, so sign up soon!

You Are The Key To My Club A

BY ABIGAIL NGUYEN When people think of February, the image of red hearts and chocolatecovered strawberries come to mind. Yet for us officers, February is a special time to reminisce and prepare simultaneously for upcoming events—in the past 6 months, so much as been accomplished

by Lake Ridge Key Club, as individuals and as a whole. With this note, our club advisor, Mrs. San Miguel, and the board are working hard to plan ahead for our banquet, LEDCON, and the next chapter, electing trustworthy officers to carry on the vision of Key Club International.

Banquets can be a fun time to dress up, eat food, and enjoy each other’s presence—however, the planning process is a little bit tricky. We finally set a date in stone, and we are proud to announce that it will be April 17th! The next step was to choose a venue.

Though we are aware of many buildings across Mansfield, Grand Prairie, and Arlington, we decided that our school cafeteria was sufficient.

With decorations, it would fit the aesthetic of a fancy event, all while remaining inside of our budget. We plan to recognize those who will be joining the officers at LEDCON, as well as those who were

awarded as Member of the Month. We are extremely proud of the members for all the hours and passion they’ve devoted to our club, so we wanted to plan something special for them!

The next thing we are excited for is LEDCON. In order to fundraise some money to help cover the registration fees, as well as the hotel rooms and rental cars, we had a fundraiser at Sharetea, our favorite local boba shop.

In addition, we are currently selling Signature gummy bears. Each box holds 60 packs, half original and half sour flavored, priced at $1 each. We often discuss transportation and hotel rooms at our officer meetings, as we are granted a limited amount of space by our funds. However, with the dynamic of our board, we think we will strengthen our bond and create new memories as

we learn more about Key Club International. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend LEDCON due to a band trip to Disney, but I will help our club prepare as much as possible with the scrapbooking contest and fundraisers!

In the midst of all the planning that goes on in February, we hope that the members have maintained, if not, strengthened their passion for service and pride as a Lake Ridge Key Club member. The current officers are very proud of the club we have become in the past few months, and cannot wait for the next chapter to begin. We hope to continue fundraising to make the banquet and LEDCON possible, and to continue volunteering to make an impact in our school and community.

The event we are anticipating the most this month is officer elections! On February 19th, we will hold officer elections in the library instead of presenting new volunteer opportunities, like we do at our traditional meetings.

The current officers discussed the addition of new roles, including the Service, Social, and Hours Coordinator.

These positions will replace the class representatives, as we wish to maximize productivity of the board and allow each person to focus on one task instead of expecting all officers to come up with social or service events.

Unfortunately, this would limit the opportunity for freshmen to become official Key Club officers at a young age; however, they are still encouraged to share their ideas to their officers.

THE THIRST PROJECT The Thirst Project actively works with Key Club to bring awareness to the water crisis and promote alternative solutions to the ongoing issue.

CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK Children's Miracle Network treats 62 kids every minute — that's more than 10 million kids a year. Their mission is to generate funds and awareness programs for their 170 member hospitals.

A Whole New (Chocolatey) World A

BY NOAH OBUYA Two weeks ago, I was sitting in the same position I am in now writing this article, except for two very different things. At that time I had been creating my flyer to present to the club as well as the speech I would be giving that Wednesday, all so I could have a chance at being a Key Club officer.

Making the decision to even take steps in this direction was quite nerve-racking for me, because normally I like to stay in the background in big group settings, but I knew that taking the step would be key in opening up many doors for me.

See what I did there? So, as I prepared for elections I tried to keep that in mind, even as the looming date of February 19th continued running around my brain.

The days passed quickly and the time had come for me to steel my nerves and get ready to give my speech. As I walked to the library, I tried to not think about all that could go wrong, instead thinking about none other than my one love, chocolate. Before I knew it, I was up in front of the club giving my minute long speech and displaying my flyer.

The event I had been so scared of for a week was finally over and let me tell you walking back to my seat after finishing

my speech produced a feeling that I only feel when devouring chocolate almonds. Before I move on, I’d like to congratulate all others who ran whether you received a position or not, because I know how much nerve it takes to go in front of a throng of people trying to convince them that you deserve to be leading the club.

Now, fast-forward two weeks and here I am, proud to announce that I’ll be the new Key Club webmaster for the 20202021 school year. I’m thankful for all who helped to propel me to this moment and it’s honestly great to see my hard work pay off. I can assure you that I’ll do everything in my power to make the online aspects of LRHS Key Club a smooth ride for our members and with the help of the other 2020-2021 officers, we’ll make your Key Club experience truly amazing. As I step out from the background where I normally stay (with my chocolate assortments in hand) and step into a whole new world of student leadership, I hope you guys take the steps to find your own special niche in this club of ours. Taking a little chocolate for the road wouldn’t hurt either.
