RECAP FIRST CLUB MEETING On Wednesday, August 28th, our club held our first meeting of the year with over 120 students present! We served food and drinks and informed potential members of what Key Club is all about. To say the officers were overjoyed would be an understatement. We could not be happier to start the year with this amazing team!

MISSION ARLINGTON Members volunteered at Mission Arlington, packing food and other supplies to be donated to economically disadvantaged families in the area. The experience was beautiful, to be able to serve alongside new faces and make new memories with the future of our club.

Needless to say, our first club event was a success and one to remember.

PRESIDENT'S letter

Hello Key Clubbers!

Welcome to the Lake Ridge Key Club! I’m Christeen Nguyen and I’m honored to serve as your President for the 2019-2020 school year. Thank you to everyone for joining us at our first meeting on the 28th to kick off the new school year. Also, thank you to the other officers on the board for planning out this meeting - it would have been impossible to do without y’all.

First off, I’d like to introduce myself if y’all don’t know me already. I’ve been in key club since my freshman year and have served as Secretary and Vice President my sophomore and junior year, respectively. I grew up figure skating for most of my life and when I wasn’t on the ice competing, I would be off the ice volunteering as a runner - posting results, helping prepare snacks for the skaters, and handing out medals. Growing up, I loved helping people and this carried through into my high school career.

Additionally, I hope everyone is as excited as I am for the new year! With fall and winter rolling around the corner, there will be numerous volunteer opportunities like fall festivals at elementary schools, 5K fun runs, and more.

Also, as per request, your officer board will be working hard to host more socials, so keep an eye out! Remember that this club is only as successful as what you make it to be, so get out into your local community and volunteer!

The feeling of gratitude you get after you’ve reached out a helping hand and know that your volunteering impacts someone makes your heart so full.

Again, thank you for choosing to be part of this enormous organization and I’m eager serve as your President this year. I will be trying my hardest to make it the best year thus far and I hope you will be as well!

THE THIRST PROJECT The Thirst Project actively works with Key Club to bring awareness to the water crisis and promote alternative solutions to the ongoing issue.

CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK Children's Miracle Network treats 62 kids every minute — that's more than 10 million kids a year. Their mission is to generate funds and awareness programs for their 170 member hospitals.

THE TRUTH ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL A FEATURED ARTICLE WRITTEN BY OUR VERY OWN SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE

BY ABIGAIL NGUYEN Welcome back to school everyone! I hope everyone had an easy start to their first semester. As the year progresses, many of us seek new opportunities in high school by becoming more involved in clubs and other extracurricular activities.

Whatever it may be—band, sports, UIL, theater, or church—there is definitely a way to balance it all. Here is some advice on how to balance your academics with your extracurriculars, but most importantly, Key Club.

Though there’s not a set list of school supplies for high school, you should consider buying a planner. Utilizing a planner will help you stay organized and prevent skipping events or assignments. Nothing feels better than checking off a task that you’ve accomplished within that day. With academics, make sure you prioritize which assignment is most important— consider which class you value more and which assignments factor more towards your grade. When it comes to that time of year, shorter assignments can be completed in the morning before school, during lunch, or throughout the day if needed. With the right people, study groups can be effective as well.

With long hours of marching band practice almost every day, I understand how all of your extracurriculars must align in order to fully participate. Key Club holds its meetings every other Wednesday for no longer than 30 minutes, which perfectly falls on my “rest day” for band. However, not everyone is lucky enough to have a schedule that satisfies all, so here is my advice to you: compromise with the leaders or advisors of the organization, and ask if you can alternate or shorten the time that you spend meeting for each activity. For instance, UIL coaching might occur every Wednesday; however, take the initiative to study the material on your own time and come to Key Club meetings for 20 minutes.

You can also utilize technology to catch up on events or even FaceTime to tune into other activities at the same time. When there

is no chance that you can attend Key Club meetings, then make sure to find your own time to commit to other areas, such as volunteering on weekends or whenever you’re available.

Something that people forget to emphasize about high school is to get the most out of it while you can. Choose to stay in activities that you are most passionate about—this will drive you to be more energetic throughout the event and make such moments worthwhile.

What makes Key Club worthy of your time? Is it your mission to serve others and give back to your community?

Does it create a positive environment to spend time with your friends? Whatever it may be, for Key Club or for anything else, let it not solely be a stunt for your college application. Going into my senior year, I reflect on the relationships that I’ve created, the impact of my work on

my

organizations,

and

most

importantly, how genuine that work was.

Here are some questions to help you think about your character and your goals: Did you view your classmates as competition? Or as potential friends?

Were

you

kind

to

everyone

you

encountered? What have you learned from other people? Were they able to learn things from you? Deep evaluation of your actions and how they affect other people will not only help you become a better person, but will reward you in the future as you encounter more opportunities.

Sometimes, it’s nearly impossible to attend meetings for everything all at once. In this case, be sure to incorporate the values of Key Club into everything that you do—seek to serve everyone that you’re surrounded by, whether they’re your best friends or strangers. With or without an official title, strive to improve your leadership skills so that your club, team, and/or community can benefit and grow overall.

And most importantly, take care of yourself. As much as I do this, don’t sacrifice all of your sleep in attempts to accomplish all of your goals. Find the time to exercise and eat healthy foods.

Take care of your mental health and realize your limits. Take short yet effective breaks (Yes, you should reduce your nap time from 2 hours to 15-20 minutes!). Failing to maintain a healthy lifestyle and consistent routine will hinder your ability to focus and therefore reach your goal. Never be afraid to ask others for help. Our motto, “Caring—Our Way of Life,” does not only apply towards others, but to yourself as well.

With that being said, I hope everyone was able to take away at least one piece of advice and apply it to their high school experience. Remember that though everyone has their own journey, we should all collaborate and help each other throughout these four years.

I wish you all good luck this 2019-2020 school year and hope it’s full of blessings!

MISSION ARLINGTON

At our first club event, members volunteered at Mission Arlington, a local outreach center that strives to provide food and other necessities for the surrounding community and families who live in economically disadvantaged households.

Members helped store and carry food items and other donations to be distributed to families in the area. We unloaded trucks full of supplies and were able to enjoy each other's company while serving our community.

Hello Key Clubbers!

As we enter into the new school year, I find that it can be so easy to get caught up in your school work and other responsibilities. For me, Key Club is a perfect way to get a break from all of this because serving with the right people can make for some of the best memories.

I hope you guys like the new layout and the new newsletter name! recently I reevaluated myself and my work as an officer, and in an effort to put out work that represents me through and through, I decided to revamp the look just a bit.

I can't tell you enough how excited I am for this club, especially as a senior entering into my last year. It may be a bittersweet feeling, but the motivation to want our club to continue to thrive is at an all-time high and I couldn't be more thankful for this team.
