A CHANGED PERSON Featured article by Madison Nguyen When I joined Key Club, I just expected it to be a normal club that I would not think twice about on any given day. As I continue my journey, however, I see it as much more than that. Although my Key Club experience has been short, has still impacted me in many ways to help me become the person I am today.

I have always prided myself on being involved in the community and volunteering from a young age, but I now see that I did it for the wrong reasons.

Instead of my actual focus being helping others and the community, I was focused on collecting hours to get them listed on a transcript. I never really chose to go to events, but because my sister dragged me to them. I saw every task that I had to do as a chore, and I tended to dread whenever I had to go volunteer, but luckily that changed.

I sometimes think that the reason I felt that way was because of the environment. Whenever I volunteered, I was always either working by myself or with a group of people I did not connect with. But when I cleaned up Elmer Oliver Nature Park, I was able to see serving as what it was: a way to not only improve the world but myself.

On the day of this volunteering event, I was quite worried because this was my first time at an in-person club event, though my worries quickly melted away.

While I was picking up trash, I was able to talk to and connect with the other club members. I did not have the same feeling of a burden that I had during my previous volunteering experiences. I was genuinely enjoying cleaning up the park, and I could see the change that we were making. Not only did we have a positive mindset during this experience, but so did the people around us as they gave us kind smiles of gratitude.

After that experience, I no longer went volunteering with the same mindset I had before. Key Club has made me realize the true point of serving, and that has made me a better person. I now no longer volunteer for brownie points, but rather to help others. I sign up for events for myself, and I am glad to attend each one. Seeing how much I have been able to change in one year for the better, I cannot wait to continue Key Club and see how much more I will grow.

HOTO Featured article by Skyler Nguyen

I have had my future planned ever since I was a kid. However, as time goes I realize that my dream will be hard to achieve. It starts off with high school, then to college, and finally my dream job.

Therefore, I need to succeed in high school.

That begins with Key Club guiding me throughout high school, and high school is meant to be a way to prepare me for college and life in general.

Key Club prepares me for these two by companionship. In other words, I’m taught how to work with my peers to achieve a common goal. Everytime I volunteer, I’m not working alone. I’m with fellow members and friends and we work together to help my community in any way possible. As I volunteer more and more, I work with people and sometimes even new people. This gets me ready for college in how I’ll meet new people and work together with them for a similar cause. To add, the companionship provided by Key Club helps me later in life after college.

There will never be a point in life where I’m left working alone. I will forever be working with other people so I need to be prepared well for it.

Furthermore, Key Club helps my future by assisting my college resume.

A huge part of my future is college itself and I want to be accepted into my dream college. My dream college will look at my resume and Key Club will be a big factor to it. Although I have excellent grades, it’s not enough to get accepted because I need to show I’m part of my community.

Key Club is what makes me part of community and community service in general is a good thing to have.

In addition, Key Club prepares me for my future by giving me opportunities to support my community. It is important to help out my community in any way possible and it is a life skill that is necessary to have. Key Club readies me by giving me that chance to give back to my community. Later in life, I may have to give back to my community again and it is good to know how to.

All in all, Key Club will affect my future positively through giving me community service experience, companionship, and benefitting my college application. In other words, Key Club will help and prepare me for my future life.

Letter from the Hey Key Clubbers!

How is your summer been? My summer has been busy, but I get to complete a lot of the goals I set.

The coming 2021-2022 school year is about to be started so I'm super excited! Woo-hoo... Excited for my senior year and most importantly, to volunteer with our Key Clubbers in person more often.

Like most of the officers before me, I really don’t know how to say goodbye to our great organization, the countless volunteering events we have every year, and the everlasting memories we made together during my time in Key Club. Knowing SOME people NOT on our board anymore are gonna say I’m being “dramatic as hell” when I leave the chat but it’s all fun and games… until they remember I have their address on sight already but anyways, I hope my message does come across to the incoming new officers on the board and the returning ones from my presidential year.

Like the countless officers and presidents before me, I just joined Key Club, not only for the interesting title of the club, but also to have something I would be involved in high school instead of just becoming a “blob” in the crowd of incoming freshmen. Quickly enough, I really found myself enjoying this whole concept of “volunteering for hours or ‘else get kicked out’” but it was the commodity of people coming together to make a difference in the world. I know how overused and cheesy that line is whenever we have elections and monthly articles because hey, I’ve used it countless times before but I really can’t phrase it any other way besides that. It was from my first volunteering event at the Music Alley Festival and me getting Knope vibes by the end of it did I truly feel myself “falling into service” (that’s an article title if you don’t understand the reference). From there, my experiences and friendships with those in our club just grew into something more great. From checking out dilfs at Santa’s Workshop to getting cut up by thorns for a piece of trash in the park, I’ll always keep those stupid, dumb, and memories times I had together with each and everyone of you.

And for the millionth time about the panorama talk, I know this year wasn’t really the most ideal for any of us but honestly, thank you for helping me hold things together this year. Whether we had 5 members attending our meetings to 2 people going to our club socials, I really do appreciate the time we’ve spent together after club meetings or during any of our events throughout the school year.

In ending off this long paragraph that probably has a bunch of mistakes in it, just thank you guys for being the one and only, best officer board I’ve ever had. I know things will get rough and stressful, and members may not be the most fun to deal with at times, but just remember to laugh it off and smile at the end of the day. Key Club was never really about the DCON rankings or getting enough hours or volunteering in your community, it was meant for the everlasting bonds and friendships you’ll forge as you go throughout your journey together. Even when you have the time to look back in your yearbook and your high school life, it’s not the amount of hours you had or which events you completed, but the people you’ve met and have made a difference in your life will be those you’ll keep in your heart forever.

In final conclusion again, I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, whether it be in the monthly submissions and even beyond high school Key Club and I really do love and appreciate every single one of you guys.
