The McKinley High School Performing Arts Program has been awarded a substantial Teach Arts Ohio Grant for the 2021-2022 school year- A Year in the Life- Musical Theatre!
A Year in the Life – Musical Theatre is a year-long study of the disciplines that makes up the world of Musical Theatre – Acting, Dancing and Singing — with a professional artist in residency. McKinley’s artist will be Andrea McCormick of Cleveland. Teacher Kristy McNally said that McCormick will work with students in the McKinley Performing Arts program during the school year to foster interest and growth for technique, history of musical theatre, and professional and collegiate acumen. “She will work with the choir, dance and theatre instructors at the high school level to deliver highly collaborative content. She will deliver content in the classroom and rehearsal and performance spaces unique to each discipline: dance studio, theatre lab spaces, and more,” McNally explained. “The culmination of the year in residency will be a highly interactive and entertaining performance piece to share with the community and school!” Andrea McCormick is a performing artist and instructor from Cleveland, Ohio who has received her Bachelor of Arts from Wright State University in Theatre Studies, with an emphasis on Dance and Applied Voice. She began with ballet at four years of age. She also continued her studies in various dance forms, including tap, African folk dance, liturgical/spiritual, jazz, musical theatre dance, modern/contemporary, hip hop, and Latin ballroom. Post-college, under the stage name “Andrea Belser”, Andrea has remained extremely active in the Northeast Ohio theater community, receiving 2008 Best Actress in Cleveland for her role as Juliette in, “I Have Before Me a Remarkable Document Given to Me by a Young Lady From Rwanda,” at Dobama Theatre, and nomination as 2012 Best Actress in Cleveland for her role as Pecola in “The Bluest Eye” at Karamu House Theatre. She presents herself on and off stage, doing anything from acting, dancing, or singing, to stage manager, choreographer, or costume assistant. She has also worked with several theaters, including but not limited to Cleveland Public Theatre, Meg Louise Dance, Opera Cleveland, Opera Circle, Near West Theatre, The Fine Arts Association, The Lantern Theatre and Talespinner Children’s Theatre.
