I am also immensely grateful to the volunteer speakers and presenters who generously shared their time, knowledge, and expertise—many of whom are alumni of this very process. A heartfelt appreciation goes out to the Debutante Committee for the countless hours spent in planning every detail of this event, and to the Deb moms for their unwavering support and collaboration. This journey requires a unique dedication, and they ensured its success. A huge shout out to Tendaji, Little Rock Central High School, Philander Smith University, Maumelle H.S. and the Chenal Event Center for your support. History of the Alpha Debutante Ball
The Beaux Ball, the forerunner of the Alpha Debutante Ball, had its beginning in 1948. The Brothers of Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. wanted to make an impact on the social and educational life of African American females attending colleges and universities throughout the state and the country. The first activity was held in December 1948 at the Dreamland Ballroom on the corner of West Ninth and State Streets. The affair was patterned after the Mardi Gras Parade Krewes that are held in New Orleans, Louisiana. Brother John King served as chairman and was instrumental in making the venture a success. The Fraternity invited guests to witness the presentations of seven young ladies who were selected to represent the Seven Jewels of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. From these seven young ladies, a Beaux Queen was selected. The first queen selected in 1948 was Ms. Frankie Snodgrass of North Little Rock, Arkansas. Ms. Snodgrass was a student at Philander Smith College. As the interest in the activity continued to grow, it was decided in 1950 to change the format and expand the activity in order to offer an opportunity for other young ladies to participate. The name of the activity was changed to the Annual Alpha Phi Alpha Debutante Ball.
On December 26, 1950, the First Annual Alpha Phi Alpha Debutante Ball was held at the Robinson Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Thirteen beautiful, excited young ladies made their formal entrance into society. They waltzed with their escorts to the tune of “I Love You Truly.” Ms. Thelma Pauline Minton of Little Rock, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul L. Minton and at that time a sophomore at Arkansas AM&N College (now University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff), was selected as Ms. Pi Lambda. The Alpha Debutante Ball now presents high school young ladies to society on a yearly basis during a formal black tie event, as it was 75 years ago.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The seven founders, known as the “Jewels of Alpha” were Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, Vertner Woodson Tandy. The fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s Aims of Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind. Pi Lambda Chapter The Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was established in Little Rock, Arkansas on May 3, 1926. The founding members of the Pi Lambda chapter are: C. Franklin Brown, A.B. Fox, J.G. Ish Jr., J.V. Jordan, U.S. Maxwell, Carl Patillo, M.K. Perry, and Leroy Williams. The current membership of the Pi Lambda Chapter include leaders in business, education, government service, and many other forms of professional endeavors. Today, the Fraternity continues its commitment to the community through national programs such as Go to High School, Go to College, Project Alpha, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, and A. Charles Haston Brother's Keeper. The Pi Lambda Chapter regularly participates in activities such as the Komen Race for the Cure, Big Sisters/ Big Brothers, and the March of Dimes. Above all, Alpha Phi Alpha is committed to the furtherance and improvement of the community.

Congratulations Michaela you are a star! May God continue to bless your life. From Davion, Crosbie, Dominic and Malachi
Congratulations, Michaela! To teach is to believe in tomorrow. At Central Arkansas Christian, I see that promise every day in the hearts and dreams of our students. I’m proud to teach here and to honor my late wife, Catheryne Santos, who shared that same love for students and the joy of learning.
Michaela, from the moment you learned that your brain works differently, you showed the world what resilience truly looks like. You faced dyslexia with courage, faith, and determination - and you never quit. Watching you overcome challenges and shine so brightly has been one of my greatest joys. Keep moving forward - your story inspires everyone who meets you.
- Ms. Melissa
DON’T QUIT
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, when the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, when the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile but you have to sigh, when care is pressing you down a bit - rest if you must, but don’t you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns. As everyone of us sometimes learns. And many a fellow turns about when he might have won had he stuck it out. Don’t give up though the pace seems slow - you may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor’s cup; and he learned too late when the night came down, how close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out - the silver tint of the clouds of doubt, and when you never can tell how close you are, it may be near when it seems afar; so stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit - it’s when things seem worst, you must not quit.
Edgar Albert Guest

Forever Proud of You A Tribute From Thomas Hall
Thomas Hall passed away in November 2022. His greatest wish was to see his granddaughter Michaela graduate from high school. Although he could not be here to witness it, she will graduate in May 2026 as an honor student thriving academically and beating the odds of a student with dyslexia and epilepsy, receiving scholarships, and stepping confidently into her future. She continues to shine brightly, carrying the love and legacy of the man who believed in her wholeheartedly.
To Our Beautiful Michaela, We are so proud of the hardworking, kind, and radiant young woman you’ve become. Watching you shine brings us so much joy! Keep walking with grace and purpose. With love, Auntie Christy & Uncle Lamar
