WHITTIER JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
LINCOLN, NEBRASKA
The ninth graders of Whittier this year, dedicate their yearbook to Mr. Henry Ross, who came to Whittier in 1928, after having spent the previous two years teaching elsewhere That year, with his good fortune st ill holding out, he met Mildred who was to be his future wife.
Mildred gave him a daughter, Carolyn, who in turn presented them with two grandchildren , Beth , age 11, and Ross, 9.
In 1952 Mr. Ross was promoted to Assistant Principal but still found time for his hobbies which include, hunting, ·fishing , bowling, and occasionally calling square dances.
Now , in appreciation to one of the most important, and well thought of men in our school , we dedicate our 1970 yearbook to Mr. Henry Ross.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for everything he 's done for the entire student body and for students individually. We wish you the best of luck and the happiest years of your life: in your retirement , Mr. Ross.

This being my last year here at Whittier makes me feel very sad. For I will be leaving many fond memories of past experiences , also I have made many friends.
Being the oldest at Whittier with all t he little 7th and 8th graders around , makes it a lot of fun. But wait until next year, we'll have to start at the bottom of the school again. In time we will be at the top.
The teachers I have had were mainly good with a few exceptions for those who continually i ndulged me in homework. Maybe it was those teachers that helped me have a better outlook on l ife and helped me know how to make the most of the few talents I have.
Whittier is the greatest junior high school and I will miss it. But high school will open up new doors through which to venture. There it will further my career for which I have a goal, something worthwhile to work and plan for before saying I have lived and not merely existed.
As I enter into-a-future away from Whittier , it will have enhanced my lifetime goals and become a precious thought in the episode of my life.
Goodbye Whittier. I'll miss you for y ou are the best ever made. I'll come and see you whenever I can!

The 22nd annual Valentine Assembly, another fabulous success, was held February 13, 1970. The assembly was centered around a take-off of the television show, "The Newlywed Game." Couples who participated were Bill Venhaus and Brenda Flury as Mr. and Mrs. Q.T. Pie, Mark Linke and Alice Whitney as Mr. and Mrs. N. E. Time, John Weddle and Kathy Weber as Mr. and Mrs. Val N. Tine and Bob Bluford and Karen Bradley as Mr. and Mrs. R. U. Married. The truly inimitable Raymond Aguirre served as Master of Ceremonies.
The 1970 Valentine Assembly marked the first time in the traditional assembly that there were no waltzers-instead they put on the skit. The musical entertainment was presented as commercials for the Newlywed Game. The Whittier Harmonettes sang "Michelle" in the first commercial. The second consisted of an instrumental quartet who played "More" and "Somebody Loves You." The quartet was made up of Pat Keelan, Washington Watley, John Hopgood, and Jolinda Bergman. The third commercial saw the Madrigals joining the Harmonettes who then sang "Windy."
Laurie Sheldon and Wayne Cramm were given the honors of introducing the King and Queen of Hearts finalists: Margaret Mar escorted by Raymond Aguirre; Roseann Kuwamoto by Ron Love; Wendy Prucha by Trini Ortiz; Cindy Rowch by David Fen; Carol Neely by John Weddle; Alice Whitney by Jerry Meyers; Karen Bradley by Bob Bluford. As Laurie and Wayne acknowledged, the World Studies rooms selected the finalists. Under a triple drum roll the anticipation grew. As Wayne asked for the envelope Dickie Love entered and picked it out of his hat. The 1970 King and Queen of Hearts are "Her Royal Highness" Margaret Mar and "His Royal Majesty" Trini Ortiz. This ended the gala affair until next year.
The decoration s were said to be the best in the assembly's history. The people who should be credited with the superb work are Margaret Mar, Carol Neely and other members of the art club. To all those who contributed toward a most successful assembly, please accept our expression of appreciation and gratitude for a job well done in keeping with the best traditions of Whittier Jr. High.

Whittier may not always have won the games, though we won in differ -• ent and more important things. Our students have mastered the art of good sportsmanship.
Our teachers are among the best. They have a talent for making classes more informal and produ c ing a friendly atmosphere for both study and pleasure.
This year has been more exciting than last year. There has been more fraternizing with grades other than your own, than before. There were more things to do and more places to go, partly due to the Art Club and Drama Club which originated this year.
Being in eighth grade can be taken advantage of , you're right in the middle and can get in with the other grades.
Going into ninth grade makes you more privileged over the younger students. You're given a wider choice of electives from which to select your curriculum.
Only four years left in school makes me feel sad. For then is the time old friends must part and make new lives for themselves.
The assemblies this year have been better than ever! They are interesting , amusing, and educational. The guest speakers have thrown the floor open to the students this year, more than ever, giving us a chance to ask questions and express our opinions. This is what establishes the beginning of understanding between the older and younger generations.
Being the "in -betweener s" we're still young enough to view life in all of its simplicity, and yet old enough to start to do something about its complexities. We can share the best of two worlds.

7th grade is a time for fun
For gym to hop and run
A time for some kicks
And also mathematics
Wait for the bell
Then run to your locker
You'll get to your class
Unless you meet with a talker
Walk in those halls
The days going slow
You're getting so tired
Have to get an education
Or you'll never get hired
What's today?
It 's the day for a test
You ' ve got to study hard
You've got to do your best
With your head held high
Soon you'll be there
To jump for the sky

B e hind us we have left our old schools, many of our old friends, trips to the st ore three or four times a day for candy, our grade school teachers, lost pets, and tear stained cheeks - the repercussions of a terrible spill off our bicycles.
Ahead of us waiting patiently are new friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, new teachers, time for dates, time for love , high school, college, marriage, children of our own to watch as they clumsily climb the ladder to maturity as we are doing now.
There are many doors, waiting to be opened, and waiting for so meone who really cares to open them.
We are the ones who next will rule the world, taking the places of our grandparents.
But first, before we can rule the world , we must learn to rule ourselves and our schools in a proper manner.
Whittier gives us , its students, time and a place to grow. We are given the chanc e to have a student governm en t whic h provides us with the opportunities for self-expression that we so desperately need.
How could any of us feel unfortunate, when our school has so many new experiences just waiting for us to partake in?

Mr Gartner
Mr. Ludwig B. Gartner, a former science and physical education teacher of Whittier passed away this year at the age of sixty-three.
He was born in Lincoln, and attended the University of Nebraska , receiving his bachelors degree in 1936. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and of the National Science Teachers Association.
Mr. Gartner is survived by his wife Ruth , and two sons Thomas and Timothy.
He taught school continuously from 1936 until his death in 19 70. He was a member of t he Whittier faculty from 1942 until 1968.
He was described by a close friend as "an able and farsighted educator who combined love and consideration for his fellow man with moral courage to accomplish the goals which he set for himself and those with whom he worked so . fastidiously and conscientiously."
With the affection and devotion he dedicated to his pupils and colleagues, we so dedicate this page to him.
