The Civic League was organized in 1923 twenty - seven years ago when %'bittier with its new b~ilding was the first junior high school e_;3tablished in Lincoln ·rhis plan of student organization was not a new one in our city as it had been in operation in the elementary schools which had previous to 1923 included all grades from kindergarten through the eighth grade .

The Civic League with its two divisions , one for girls and one for boys , has always served a useful function in our school . Playground activities , supervision of bicycle racks , direction of traffic in the cafeteria , operation of a lost and found department , care of stage properties are some of tho many activities car.'i-a:1 on by Civic League members

Through the delegate assemb]ypupil opinion has helped in the making of rules and in shaping school policies . ~ lso pupils have through this means helped promote such activities as sale of tickets for eve~ing programs and getting subscriptions for the school program .

Somo changes in the opcrntion of the organization have been made through the years , the most notable being in the manner of nominatins and electinG officers During the early years pupils had less freedom of choice in the selection of leaders inasmuch as a nominating committee composed of pupils, principals , and faculty members made up the slate of candidates . on the sur;gestion of social studies teachers a primary system of nominating was adopted. Pupils then carried petitions obtaining signatures of classmates who were willing to vouch for their fitness to hold office . Recently pupils have merelJ signed a statement in which they declare thoir intention to . run for office . nnother chan8e that has proved to be satisfactory is the appointment of committee members through a civil service system Pupils aro ra tod ace ording to a point sys tern and on this bas is are selected for committees

TheCivic League has operated successfully as an organization in v1hich pupils may practice democracy. We are proud of the leadership and service records made by our officers and committee members in high school, university, and later in public life

Educational facilities must change -to fit tho needs of the times. Those that served the nation at tho turn of tho century are inadequate for people living in the air age, the atomic age Opportunities for participating in mental and physical activities which develop skills , personality and character traits must b0 made available . In th0 following paragraphs we have tried to show how .Jhittior School trios to fulfill the needs of modern youth. • 1

General Education is a new course at ·Hhittier which combines English , Social Studies, end what wo used to do in home room~ ~ e hop o that it will provide a better way to educate boys and girls by using longer periods of time with fewer pupils for each teacher~ In General Education ~ c also try to understand about personal and social problems and receive guidance from our g0n3ral edu Gation teachers :\'hittier boJs and girls and teach0rs have worked hard to make genoral education a success because it is a new and challenging pr oJram .

Tho movies v10 soo in our classrooms aro brought to us from. var ious sources Some of them are owned by the Lincoln Public Sch ools and kept in a film library in the ?ublic School J\ctninistratio n -~uildin g Mrs . Hannan , a teacher at :1lhittier last year is the head of this deoartment. Other films come from the Universit y of Nebraska film library To get any of these films wo call Mrs Hannan's office which ord0rs them for us . We must share our own Lincoln scho o l films with all tho other schools hero and the University of Nebraska films go out all ov e r tho state. Our State Health Department puts out films which are used in some science and homo oconomics classes . The United States Soil conservation Service nlso h9.s films vrhich are nvailable for use showing soil conservation practices Our library had some pic tures which were contest winners in a photography contest . Those aro all arran ged for through our central officco ~ e have r e cords which aro available for classroom use. The Lincoln schools also have machin0s such as opaque projectors, and turn tables and microp:1or:0s available to us when vrn need thcmo You prob~bly know about the six ninth r;rade boys wh o aro CJ):) :'a tors. It is thoy who actually show films, filmstrips, sl j .do s and other materials to the classes They nro soloctod fr s~ a gro up on tho basis of :1.ow well thoy can shoulder responsibility and whot~or thoy can l ea rn to operate the equipment well .

This year at '..'hit tier we have taken up square dancing as c P . A real event c joyed by those who like square dancing was tho First Youth E Square Danco Round Up at the University of N0 braska , Colise: Friday night, !pril 14.

Many Girls who like tumbling asked for an after school tt bling club 11hoy have learned to do many things that have r usually been included in the regular P . E . tumbling programo 'I1"~ club presented a number for the Spri.ng Program , which incluc pyramid building .
