Lux has what it takes to stay one step ahead. The students ~t John Lux Middle School show leadership and strong academic involvement. Lux students stay one step ahead in athletics, the classroom, and at home. We strive for excellence in all that we do.
As a student body, we overcome all the obstacles we face through effort and cooperation. We are true to each other and strong, yet still maintain a sense of humor. This is what keeps us that one step ahead. Students and teachers at Lux serve as role models for all grades and all schools '. Eighth graders have guided the sixth graders, stood by the seventh graders, and now, as eighth graders, can stand alone.
We are the future!
By Meg Russell •
First semester journalism class created the 1997-98 yearbook. Taught by Mrs. Cochnar, we, as journalists, have gone through the year and recorded all the special and unique events that make our school that one special step ahead.
Through cooperation and teamwork we were able to complete the project well and on time. Enjoy!

Throughout the year Lux has continued to stay one step ahead. From Innisbrook fund raising to the penny drive, Lux has always put forth its best effort. The challenges we faced were easily met with equal strength, patience, and courage. Lux students care and . support each other. Hat Day proved these qualities of Lux.
Lux students strive to do the very best academically, socially, and on the playing field. Lux sports and activities have always displayed our ever willing effort. From basketball games to band concerts we have always performed to the best of our abilities. With the many victories Lux has won, we have come to accept and learn from our losses.
We, as Lux students, try our hardest to stay one step ahead in all that we do, whether separate or together, for we are the Lux Lightning!

The 1997-1998 shool year was an over-all great year for the sixth graders! Teachers and students agree that there are many advantages to being in sixth grade. Many students in the sixth grade think that the food is a lot better than in the past. Also, sixth graders think that P.E. is even more wonderful with your own locker.
The sixth grade teachers all wor~ on one thing. That is to teach the students to be organized. The teachers say that the sixth grade has been trying hard this year and has adjusted very well. They love the sixth grade this year because all students are respectful to one another!

The seventh grade had a great year! The seventh grade teams enjoyed special days planned for them by their teachers, including Treasure Island Day, Egypt Day, trips to Arbor Day Lodge and the Icebox, a local ice rink. Most seventh graders enjoyed these special days which helped them learn in a fun and educational way. The days included activities such as arts and crafts, movies, fun assignments and games all relating to the topic set for the day. The seventh graders did not just get these days, they had to earn them by working hard in their classes. - Trips out of school were very fun. Students enjoyed the experience of learning out of the school environment. These trips also made students more interested in what they were learning. Overall, the seventh grade year was GREAT with the students and teachers working together.

The seventh graders had a great year! They learned many new things in all of their classes and enjoyed learning it too. Most seventh graders agreed that Lux Middle School was . great for several reasons. Throughout the year they enjoyed field trips, special learning days, and regular classes. Overall, the 1997-98 seventh grade year was very sucessful.
It has been another great year at John Lux Middle School. The eighth graders have shown great leadership in sports, activities , and all together fun. The staff has once again influenced the eighth grade students to get involved and take responsibility into their own hands. They helped us stay that one step ahead. This 1997-98 year will always be a remembrance to Lux.

The Student Council has been in charge of the d"nces for the 7th and 8th graders and the fun nights for the 6th graders. They have been busy this year, heading up the food drive and the penny drive, getting dances ready, and selling candy and carnations.
Students in Odyssey of the Mind work in three different groups, divided by grade levels. Each group has a different problem that they choose to solve. They prepare as a group and compete at a tournament. If they win they can go past regionals to state. Winners at state go on to world competition.
One of the best things about Lux is its sports. If you go to Lux, you don't have to worry about a lack of sports that you can join. You can join cross country, volleyball, flag football, basketball, wrestling, and/or you can go to the weight room after school. The weight room is a great place to work out after school. In the weight room people can ride bikes, row, jump rope, sit and reach, use the steppers, lift weights, and do push ups and sit ups. Some even go there to talk to friends while they work out. If you can't join a sport or just don't want to, your physical education class covers a wide variety of sports. So, if you're athletic, Lux is a great place to be!

That was the slogan for the Cross Country Team from Lux Middle School for their second year. Approximately 45 runners participated throughout the season both in practice and in Saturday morning meets. Both the boys team and the girls team placed 1st or 2nd at every meet. Friday practice always centered around relays and partaking of gummy worms in preparation for Saturday meets. Coach Mercure and her son Coach Tito (Nick Mercure) enjoyed the 97 season and thank all the members of the team for their hard work!!!

This year's 8th grade volleyball team lead Lux to many great victories! They were divided up into three separate teams; A, Band C. They worked on serving, setting, bumping and spiking. They were also almost undefeated! All three teams only lost one game each, against Mickle! Good Job 8th grade volleyball!!! Go Lux!
The 7th graders, like the 8th graders, did a good job! On Fridays the 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams would get together and practice. They would play a game called 'King of the Court' where you play 3 on 3 on half a volleyball court. They would play until one team made a point and then the winners would play another team. The object of this game was to see which team could last the longest as the 'King'.
