In the 1996-1997 school year, Lux sixth graders made a huge transition from elementary school to middle • school. The popular opinion among the sixth graders was that middle school was better than elementary school.
• Some of the reasons
sixth graders like school are multiple lunch choices and a bigger cafeteria. Korby Patzner said she liked that she got more freedom. They also like the fact that they get individual lockers. Some of the ixth graders think it's great that there are so
many people, ·but others dislike that. A lot of sixth graders like the fact that they seem to get more trust from teachers.
All in all, sixth graders have enjoyed the first year at Lux, and are excited that they are the first class to get to attend all three grades at Lux.

Many seventh graders felt that coming to Lux Middle School was a positive experience. This group had many of the same feelings as sixth graders since they also came from an elementary setting. The seventh graders like Lux better because of the freedom, lockers, and the variety of food.
• Eric Spry stated, "I am glad that there are lockers at Lux because now I have a place to put all •
of my stuff, instead of leaving it in the hall." "This school is very well built, " stated Dustin Nelson.
Overall, the seventh graders prefer Lux Middle School over their previous elementary schools. A few have experienced some down sides of comirig to Lux, but many feel that there will be even greater experiences that will occur in their final year here.

Lux Middle School will not be forgotten. Through strong leadership qualities they have molded a path for future students to follow. The helpful teacher and friendly staff members also created a path. They inspired the eighth graders to take charge and assert themselves both academically and individually. Thanks, Lux, for the great school! The 96-97 year will always be remembered!

The first cross country team for Lux Middle School started on Sept. 3, the 40 members literally "hit the road," and practiced hard for the entire season. Both the girls and boys teams competed in 3 meets and represented Lux well. Practicing for cross country meant hills, ~istance, and speed. It also included teamwork, individual goal-setting, friendships and fun. Their team motto was: The Race ls Not Always To The Swift, But To Those Who Keep Running! And run they did!!!

Morning chorus was a challenging but a very rewarding activity. Each student had to get up early in the morning and go to school two times a week to practice. They put on three performances, and are hoping and willing to do more. They worked very hard but it was well worth it. They sang at the dedication of John Lux Middle School in the fall singing " The Power of the Dream" The 7th and 8th graders sang other songs s~ch as "Colors of the Wind", "SINGABAHAMBAYO", "Everybody Singin' One Song", and many others. The 6th graders sang songs such as" An American Hymn"," Take A Little Time" , "Someday", and many others. They had a lot of fun and they were devoted to making sure they were there, giving people a brighter day with their lovely songs.
