Battle& Life, That's what it's all about. A constant struggle To overco1ne-Social pressures, Competition, Grades, Parents.

We face these now For what purpose? Soon they will pass, But what have we learned fro1n them? Have we grown, as they said we should, Or have we just completed another stage, Another part of our expected existence?

Soon we'll face more.

Things to come seem more serious, But perhaps they are just another phase.

Another test, of another type for us to pass.

We do what is expected, only because it is expected.

Is that what we want?

Relevance used to he the big word. It now sounds old-fashioned, But it still confronts us.

Arts prevalent • Ill '74

Arts concerned with the creation of things of beauty is the definition for fine arts. Beau tifu I art has been excelled this year at Southeast. Backing this expression has been the Lincoln Public School's "Year of the Arts".

It's objectives were to have enhanced the talents of serious students of an art, mobilize a greater mutual use of school and community artistic resources and deepen knowledge and enjoyment of the arts

Council Chairman David Meyers said, "The Year of the Arts was the icing on the cake. What we've tried to do is extend the pleasure and enjoyment of the arts to students and to the rest of the community who didn't directly participate."

Special activities which outlined the "Year of the Arts" consisted of artists and students working within the school, talented students were chosen to work with artists, and public performances and exhibits of the "Year of the Arts" were presented to the community.

Southeast scheduled many extra opportunities to help enforce the arts. Drama was represented by artists such as Oiff

Goodwin, a specialist in dramatic acting and three one-act plays we re given this spring whose authors were Southeast students, Frank Burden , Cathy Lyon and Liz Knoll.

Dance seminars and academies supplied opportunities for interested dance students.

"Body movement is my way of expressing what's on the inside, feelings such as frustration , humility, love just whatever I want to express," explained dancer Chery Priess.

Dance was highlighted by the presentation of the Jaffrey Ballet at Nebraska Kimbal Recital Hall.

University of Nebraska Professor Robert Beadell worked with the music department, helping individual students compose original piano selections. Some of Southeast's music students participated in the AU-City's choir, band or orchestra.

Assemblies with Jerry Shaw, a cartoonist and a Black gospel singing group entitled "Love, Peace , Happiness Unlimited" provided culture awareness for the art department.

Diverse Plays Add. Li.fe

The year be gan with "Fiddler on the Roof' put on by the Court Choir For the first time in many years , juniors took several of the leading role s.

Polly Hammond played Golda, Kim Jiracek her daughter, and Mike Keene the tailor and son-in-law to be. Other leads, such as the papa , played with a new and skinnyer character , (Burke Hinds) , were all strong in the areas of voice and acting. One member of the audience later wrote to Driector Frank Mills , " I saw 'Fiddler' put on in New York, and I thought your Yenta (Cathy Lyon) was stronger than the one on Broadway. "

Cathy Lyon , very active in drama, also had a lead role in the comedy " Arsenic and Old Lace " She and Theresa Vos, playing Martha and Abby, brought laughter to the stage as they knocked off old men with their elderberry wine, under the nose of Teddy , their senile brother (Steve Ress) who believed himself to be Teddy Roosevelt.

To add to the antics, Vic Wilson and Scott Bo u ghn played the mad scientist and assistant who also went around murdering people

although they didn't restrict themselves to old men.

Mortimer and Elaine (Mike Keene and Lyn Brammeier) are thoroughly dumbfounded by the goings-on and their expert facial expressions made the show.

To finish the year, Mrs Louise McDonald decided to plunge into some heavy Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet." Title roles were played by two new comers, Julie Scott and Dennis Wilson. Taient flourished through the play, and was enhanced by the outdoor setting. The Verona spirit was somewhat dampened though, as one performance was rained out and the last show was held in the girls gym.

The drama department undertook several new and diverse plays this year. From Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" to the musical "Fiddler on the Roof' and the classic comedy "Arsenic and Old Lace," many new faces have appeared on the stage , perfecting these plays to make this "Year of the Arts" one of the best years for SE drama.

Diverse J-staffs Excel

This year like other years, the publication staffs have looked good in competition both at the state level and nationally. From the National Scholastic Press Association, the Clarion earned a First Gass Rating.

State-wide, the Clarion placed six finalists: Shelley Peterson in newswriting, feature writing and editorial writing; Scott Whitcomb in feature writing ; Tasmen Yauney and Kay Powell in newswriting; Dave Morgan in photography and Scott Ballentine in advertising.

In the preliminary judging, Clarion news writers ranked first, second, and third in the state. The Clarion also won the Nebraska Sweepstakes award given by the Lincoln Journal and Star.

Shield s taff aimed for a diverse b o ok and staff this year. New ideas were added, old themes a c cent e d and some others dropped.

Shield was a lso the champ at the school sports level , winning the 5th annual Shield vs. Clarion football g ame, with a score 21-0.

Another publication s staff which , i n quantity, puts out more than the other staffs

combined, is Newsdesk. Everyday from a little wooden box was heard, "This is Newsdesk for. " and most likely a conversation was started with a friend But for those who listen, Newsdesk contributes much to the day.

Supplying both Clarion and Shield with the all important material are the photographers. Pictures are an important way of communication for the media. Quality and quantity improved as the year progressed

YFU Is Newcomer To SE

Deciding which clubs to join and which activities to be involved in are two aspects of school life that can be explored. There are people to meet and get to know People who have something in common they are alive. People are everywhere, in every corner of the world. Youth For Understanding and the American Field Service were formed so people can learn about thems elves through others.

YFU, the largest foreign exchange program in the world, is new at Southeast this year. Jayne Woytassek and Sue Hudson were the first Southeast students to participate in the program. They were both abroad fro approximately nine weeks. Sue lived in Germany and Jayne lived in Colombia. Sue and Jayne agreed that living in a different country was a very worthwhile experience. "You can' t do thin gs over there (in Germany) you might do at home," Sue said. "Customs , food and the way of life is totally differ e nt. FamHy activities are emphasized , " according to Jayne.

Students may leave Southeast but other students arriv e in their plac es. Katia Angulo, from Colombia, represented YFU and Vroni Suter, an AFS student came from Switzerland. Katia and Vroni were both here for the school year. Both of them said that school life at home is very different than it is here be cause of the activities and organizations. In their countries, home life is more impor ta nt than school life. They also said that people in the U.S. are not very outgoing. Vroni said , "You have to make the effort. Americans h ave many inhabitions and are afraid to express how they really feel , which is unlike the Swiss."

This year three finalists were chosen for AFS from Southeast They were juniors Julie Graf, Beth Llewellyn and Tom Maddox.

Everyone remembers bobbie socks and saddle shoes, penny loafers and greased back hair as being a part of boogie and boogie it was at this year ' s Homecoming Dance. With "Let's Boogie To Knight " a s this year's theme, students and alum be-bopped and boogied all night to the music of Oedipus. Scott Whitcomb and Julie Metzger reigned as King and Queen Attendants to the royalty were Cathy Peterson and Greg Baer , Deanne Kobler and Rick Reynolds, Kathy Morrow and Jim Leslie, and Judy Perry and Tom McNaught.

Opposed to traditional things su ch as homecoming, new and young things are forever faced with a struggle to exi st and a desire for st atus. New club s and organizations also encounter these problems. When th e superficial hassles of drawing up a constitution, going through the approval of the student council and faculty are over, a new organization is established Whether it will survive and prosper or whether it will fight for participation of the student body is not known.

One new club thi s year was the Shirettes. Sponsored by Mrs. Kir s ten Van Dervoort, the Shirettes brou ght a new sparkle to the basketball games and rallies. Co-captains Jayne Woytassek and Sharon Me rritt hoped the Shirettes would bring more int erest to the Pep Club members. Jayne said, "Any new dub has quite a bit Continued on page 80

Streaking around the city of Lincoln ringing bells, selling activities calendars, distributing tuberculosis posters, painting bleachers and hoiding the annual carnival, were only a few of the various activities Key Club sponsored this year. Although Key Club really didn't streak (at least as a gro up) , they did do plenty of running around Servin g both the community and the school, Key Club was one of the more active clubs at SE.

Another important organization that remained active was Student Council. The combined efforts of the council members brou ght about many changes in and around the school. Students with " h ot cars" had to cool dawn their driving habits due to council's idea of setting up radar around the campus. Council did this in answer to nei ghborhood complaints about open campus, which was almost lost due to student carelessness. Council also organized assemblies and extrac urricular entertainment for students. The most outstanding Student Council

Roll' Is Here To Stay

achievement was receivin g the Nebraska Student Council Award for bein g the best council in the state.

Along with service oriented clubs were clubs that enabled students to expand their particular areas of interest. Future Business Leader s of America (FBLA), Distributive Education Clubs of Americ a (DECA), Health Careers a nd Science Oub, gave students the opportunity to explore occupations they might wish to pursue.

FBLA. a club for furthering st udent education in business areas, began the year by preparing for the stat~ convention in Grand Island. During the year members sp ent their tim e raising money and attending the Wedn esday ni ght me et ings. The year's activities came to a climax in March when the State Conference was held at the Radisson Cornhusker Hotel.

DECA , a club for students enrolled in marketing and merchandising class, allowed students to combine social activities with learning experiences. Candi Coupe, president of SE's DECA club, was elected St a te DECA president.

Mr s. Margie Herrmann, club sponser praised Candi's work and the success of the club members at the State Conference held February 28 through March 2. One half of the 28 SE members attending the convention came away winners with honors ranging from honorable mention to first place.

For the medical minded, Health Careers Club was the obvious choice. Future Physicians and Future Nurses combined their efforts to organize this new club "We toured Lincoln General Ho spita l, Bryan Me morial Hospital and the Lin co ln T echnical College. We also participated in th e Health Ca reers di sp lay at · Brandeis," commented president Lorie Acklie about the club' s activities.

Science Club, another organization exploring career possibilities, toured various facilities and did work outside of class in science related subjects.

Other SE clubs enabled students with special talents to compete or perform with others.

Chess Club was involved in a four-round Round Robin Tournament with the three other Lincoln Public high sc hools.

Quinquatrus, the art club, placed first in the Student Council window display contest.

Thalians, for th ose involved in drama , did backst age work for various SE productions. Students who had completed 300 hours of excellent work in the drama field were selected for membership in Thespians, an honorary drama club. Club me mbers also worked on technical crews for SE o-roductions.

Girls interested in synchranized swimming opted to try out for Synkra-Knights. President Mary Churchill said, " The purpose of Synkra-Knights is to teach coordination of movement in water and to use this talent to pre se nt a yearly show for the enjoyment of oth e rs." "A Knight of Memories" was the theme for the show.

In tern a tional Club promoted activities between SE st udents and foreign exchange students from the AFS and YFU programs. They explored foreign cultures and introduced foreign foods to the student body at the food-tasting party. International Oub also sponsored the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance.

'Senior Hassles Superficial'

Making it through Mondays after a long weekend, college entrance preparations and having a class B football team as city champs are the superficial hassles of being a senior. It has been said that the senior year was supposed to be the best year of your life, but if these experiences are all high school has given them, people feel the time was wasted.

The student has had many opportunities to become involved in struggles Southeast has encountered, more relative to later life, some physical, others moral Southeast has faced having the general apathy, the fight for the privilege of open campus. The battles experienced this year are only a small preview of what is to come. These problems have given people the chance to try their unused abilities and to strengthen them, to face larger issues.

The future seems to be greater than most can cope with. But then, didn't Pre-Cal seem the impossible when learning plane geometry? Also the thought of finding a class within the allotted five minutes seemed frightening when first entering Southeast.

New Ideas Change Traditions

The class of '7 5 was the same as every other year but yet so different because of the individuals. What a class accomplishes is not brought about by past traditions, but by the way individuals take the responsibility to carry out these traditions.

For example, the juniors began making money for the Junior-Senior Prom earlier than most classes to avoid the last minute rush. They also developed new ideas such a s a girls shot put contest and a polka dance. In addition they organized traditional money makers, like bake sales and car washes

These were some of the traditions the juniors continued but they also changed a few Reserve Cheerleaders were chosen in October instead of in the spring , as tradition dictates. Juniors were made members of the publications staffs which were previously composed of senio rs. The reserve foo t ball t eam began a cheering section at the football games, chanting t hings a s, " K, I , d o uble L, KILL, KILL."

Thus the changes that came about were created because of the ideas of individuals. The class as a whole was changed by the end of the year because of new experiences challenges met and battles won.

Rookies Conquer Initial Stigma

Continuing the yea_rly trend, the soph omore cla ss was again the school's largest Six hundred strong, they filled the halls with th eir growing interest and dete r mination to succed.

From their first glance at high school life on Orienta t ion Day, sophomores realized they were entering a new phase in the ir lives. After the first few weeks they settled down into regular routines a nd soon overcame the customary sophomore stigma.

'Getting Letter Not For Everyone'

Southeast has seen a complete change of perspective for athletics. Once the center of all high school life, athletics hav e declined Participation is lower than in previou s years, and no longer does a social life center around Saturday's basketball ga me. In a period of less than five years, athletics have changed from a major activity to a minor one.

No lon ge r does the a thlete take the prime spotlight at Southeast. Al thou gh interschoiastic sports parti cipation is lower than in past years, the intramural progr am is just as popular , if not more popul ar , than in pa st years. After school many teams can be seen donning Southeast intramural j erseys , rather than b as ketball or football e quipment. Accordin g to athletic director , Bill Miller , "Only a select few can participate on a varsity basis, which is probably why intramurals hav e ga ined popularit y."

Due to intramural's sudden gain in popularity , the pro gra m m ay be extended to either Saturday, or th e eight o ' cl ock period, or both "We could be seeing this in the n ea r future," Miller said. He

also went on to point out that in ba sketball alone, 26 teams signed up for intramural competition.

Athletics have also changed perspective in other ways. Many compete simply for enjoyment. Times have passed when setting a record was all important. Athletes today face several challenges , coming out every day for serveral months, and a challenge from other organizations that demand ath letes' time. "Many are also guided away by those who oppose sports," Miller said "I feel athletics is one of the most valuable things in high school," Miller added Althou gh quantity has slacked, quality hasn't. During the 1973- 74 season many records were broken , and many teams finished with fine records. Fall sports alone ga rnered fourteen new trophies, including many Trans-Nebraska conference championships. "I fee l Southeast has a fine at hletic department and very fine coaches," Miller said.

Although partic ipation in sports is lacking,

gymnastics is one sport that hasn 't suffered Although the team lost several fine competitiors, many returning lettermen helped shape another fine team. "I felt the juniors and se niors helped the team very much, " Coach John Blocker said The team had as many sophomores and juniors as seniors, so several competitiors were inexperienced.

Still in its formative era, girls athletics continue to prosper in participation and popularity. The girls swim team making its third appearance on an interscholastic basis, again finished the season with a fine record. Included in this were many new records. Although the team was rather young and inexperienc e d, coach Steve Nootz was extremely proud of their efforts. ''I was very happy with what the girls did, they did much better than I expected," Nootz commented. "We placed an emphasis on winning." The swim team went undefeated in dual meets, enroute to a sixth place finish at state

Fine individual efforts were put in by seniors Connie Allen, who placed seventh in to SO-yard su tterfly, and senior Sue Maude who placed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle.

Both relay teams placed well, including a sixth place finish by the treestyle team (Maude, Cathy Schmidt , Carolyn Carveth, and Dallas Griswold) The Medley relay (Mau.de, Allen, Schmidt , a:nd Sharon Jewell) placed fourth and set a Southeast varsity record.

Gymnastics again enjoyed good support to a fine second place finish at state, although this year's season wasn't quite as good as previous years, Coach John Blo c ker termed his year great. The gymnast s put together a fine season dropping only three meets, all to Grand Island.

"This year we have as many sophomores as juniors and seniors," Blocker stated. "The seniors seem to help a lot, they lift spirit and teach others routines, " he added

Returning lettermen Larry Gerrard capped a fine personal season with a state title in all -around.

"Probably the most challenging aspect of gymnastics is concentration," Gerrard said He aiso added he looked forward going on to college gymnastics

Other returning lettermen including Brian Kimball, Jim Grant, Kirk Fredrich, and Dan Alyword all placed high at state Bl ocker said, "The team worked well together, they all got out there and worked hard. We had no real high point during the season b u t we really looked forward s

to meeting Grand Island again."

"We c ould feel our improvement over the season, we felt we could beat them," he said Earlier in the season the team was bothered by restless crowds. Blocker said that it is hard to sit for two hours without making noise. Many attended the meets because of general interest , but Blocker felt that some pep clubbers were attending just to obtain points. Blocker had no objection to this though he felt the team had good support.

Tennis coach George Eisle also had praise for his team. " The boys played all summer and worked hard during the season," he said The entire season went well as they finished undefeated and capped the season with a second place finish at state.

"I felt the team played as well as last year's team." The team was strengthened by experience, including four returning lettermen and several seniors from the reserve team of a

year ago Two sophomore, Randy Johnson and Mark Kramer also made the team.

Eislie al so had explicit praise for Dan Weaver, " I feel that he is the best player I ever coached." Weaver garnered second place honors at state, having his only loss to the eventual state champion Matt lweson. Eislie also cited Terry Moser and Alan Dichu te for their outs tan ding performance over the season. Eislie also pointed out that the team went into the state meet with a spectacular record.

"This gave our players a winning attitude and helped us all the way," Eisle concluded.

The football team had a rather disappointing season in comparison to previous years The team finished the season with a mediocre record of 4-4-1, and a disappointing tie for fo u rth place in the trans-Nebraska conference.

Head coach Frank Solich said, "We looked forward to the season with great optimism. We Continued on p age 1 59

"We were hurt by our inability to move the ball. This was due to the fac t that there was a lack of returnin g linemen." This sh owed up in several differ ent games, as th e Knights lost several contests by a matter of 5 t o 7 points.

Solich felt the hi gh point during the season wa s the East High ga me. "East had eve r ything gomg for them at the time, a nd we were j u st coming off a loss." The Knights, aide d by Rick Reynolds' field goal sq ue ezed by the Spartans three to zero. "We also played a fine game against Northeast."

Many of the athletes were tabbed as outstandin g, Solich cited K. Rohers, D. Marti an d G. Gilson with the most consis t en t efforts The Lincoln Journal placed Rohers, Marti, Gilson, Reynolds and Baer on the a ll-city team, and Kelvin Roher s on the all-state team ·

Solich also stated that it was a big challenge to come o u t and practice every day from the middle of the summer to the beginning of the winter "It is truly difficult to a pply oneself to practice da y after da y. The team did this very successfully all season," h e said.

Backed by several returnirig lettermen and upcomin g under classmen, the cross country team succeeded in producing a team of fine caliber , paced by returning lettermen John McCracken and Tom McNaught. The team placed well in all meets, comprising a fine season record, i ncludin g a third place finish at state

Junior letterman John McCracken felt that this year's team was far better than the team of 1972-73. "I think we bombed out o n the firt meet, but we all came back, " h e stated. Although he placed well in all the meets he went on to ~Y, " I didn't feel I was the hardest worker on the team. "

In cross co untry , Roy's boys capped the season by placing three men on the all-ci ty team , including Tom McNaught, John McCracken a nd Dave Ruthsatz.

Although most of the other sports tende d to lack par iicipants, girls volleyball was one exception from that fact. "We expected a turno u t of around 50 giils, " coach Carol Woody said. In addi ti on to the large turnout Woody also had five returning l e t terwornen.

De~pite the fact that volleyball is considered a team sp ort, m any individuals contributed fine efforts. Woody cited Sherry Brydl , La u rie Stoehr, Sue Kess, Barb Stanislav, a nd Jan Bartels for fine playing ove r the season. Woody also meniioned t hat these girl s we.te the high score r s for the season

The season e nd e d ,:i.,ith the varsity team posting a record of 1J-2. Also u1cluded · are the LPS and tram -Nebraska championships.

"We folt we would do real well, only two starters graduated from last year's team," Woody said Looking back on her seco nd season Coach Woo dy added, "T he varsity had a very successful season. I think I worked with a fine group of athlete s "

Teain Effort Sparks Coineback

"Our main pitfall was offense we missed 38 percent of our shots," basketball coach Wally !"cNaught stated a_fter one of the earlier games m the season. This problem shined above all others, as the varsity cagers dropped six straight games at the beginning of the season. McNaught was quick to add that most of the games were dropped by only a small amount of points. "The final score is not a true indication of the closeness of the game anyway," McNaught added.

As the season progressed the varsity cagers g?t u_ntracked and pulled off three straight vtctones. The cagers started their streak as they defeated Grand Island 73-58. "We started to work more on offense over the Christmas break," McNaught stated. The hard work paid off as the Knights won the next two games in a weekend doubleheader. The team rolled over Hastings on Friday and Beatrice on Saturday. "We were getting both inside and outside scoring efforts which keeps your opponent honest," Mc Naught said.

The winning streak ended at that and was follow~d by several defeats leading up to the East High game. The crosstown rivalry grew to a peak as the game commenced, things looked bleak for Southeast at the half though, as the Knights went into the lockerroom with 32-27 deficit But aided by four players in double figures the Knights pulled another upset, 60-57. ~s ~he season drew to a close the cagers won th err f mal regular season game against Lincoln High, 53-49. As the season came to an end Southeast went into the district tournament against Northeast. The season ended here as the cagers fell in defeat to the Rockets, 51-27. Although there were many disappointments for this year's varsity basketball team, they could look back on many fine moments, t he East High upset, the close games. But although the se3:son had its disappointments, it had its high pomts too.

Wrestling was not an exception to the lack of participants. "We experienced the smallest turnout for wrestling in 15 years," wrestling coach Gail Baum said. "Although the small

turnout did not only effect Southeast, this was typical of all schools throughout the state," he add~d. "Despite the fact that participants were lacking, the amount of observers increased over past year," Baum added.

Coach Baum cited several performers for highly consistant records, among these were Ron Anderson, Steve Hill, and Rick Hill In addition to these stadouts, juniors John Lucchino and Steve Hill, and seniors Bill Swenson and Rick Hill all made state cha:mpionships in · each of their respective weight classes. Although Swenson and Lucchino lost their opening matches, the Hill brothers both finished as runners up.

While fine individual efforts were turned in by the wrestlers, the team as a whole rmished the season with a 3-8 dual meet record.

Although they finished the season with a rather poor record, the varsity wrestlers finished seventh at state, in a field of 28 teams.

Commenting on the state meet Rick Hill added, "I was sure I could have beaten my opponent. I was only three points away from being state champion."

When one refers to a certain sport, such as gymnastics for example, you would probably think of boys gymnastics, which would not be considered a chauvenistic attitude because this seems to be the general coi:sensus of attitudes, both male and female. But when one directly 1efers to girls gymnastics you are referring to a different type of sport than boys gymnastics. The girls compete on several different types of apparatus, most are radically different than those used by the males but they are equally as challenging

But despite the fact that athletics for females still rank second, they have come a very long way In its second year, the girls gymnastics team has come perhaps the farthest of all the female athletic teams. In its preceeding season for instance, they competed in only three meets, compared to seven meets in this year's season. Aided by five returning letterwomen rookie coach Carolyn Bendfeldt

In trainurals Gain Student Popularity

Although intramurals still lack the popularity that varsity athletics enjoy, intramurals are far from dying As the season began, intramural director Bill Stephenson looked to the season with great optimism. "There appears to be teams with great potential," he said.

As in previous years, flag football was the most popular, but many also turned out for the other sports. "I hope there will be a la rger turnout than in previous years, even though the number of participants have increased over the last few years, "Stephenson said.

In addition to football the intramural program covered such diverse sports as girls bowling and weight lifting. Athletic Director Bill Miller also stated that he expected such a large turnout that the program may have to be expanded to the 8 o'clock period, or even Saturday.

As the flag football season drew to a close , "Leslie's Lovers", headed by senior Jim Leslie, ended up on top. As the basketball season progressed, "Little Moe Effort" capped a successful season with the school championship. As intramurals gain popularity many new ideas a.re being tried Stephenson said that a record of statistics will be kept. Stephenson also said bicycling may be added and many other sports may be tried.
