Seniors experience an active, fun-filled year
The final and most hectic year for the Class of '70 was spent in a variety of activities. Emotions and sounds distinguished this class from all the rest-the laughter, the cries of approval over royalty, the depression of defeat , the tears of happiness , the dawning boredom of the final year- no longer caring about grades, the gay faces at
school dances, the agony of monotonous homework and the impossibility of continuing the same old routine. Every senior at sometime during the year had these feelings ,· but when all was cast aside, they still felt the pride of being the class on top. It was great, but being a senior was a lot of work, too! There were tests,

applications for scholarships and loans and plans for the future to be made. Days were spent listening to college speakers and guidance teachers, trying to arrange the confusion. All these memorable times led to the final goal of a LN 1970 senior ... graduation.

Senior minds absorb memories of unforgettable
To be a senior is to have questions , mixed thoughts , days that never seem to end , pressures and above all to be experiencing a dream that you never thought would be realized so soon. A senior year is a final year It is a time that you have worked all your life for and a time that took forever to arrive. Finally it comes and when it does you think back at everything that happened and all the fun you had As your eyes fill with tears and your mind becomes filled with sadness you begin to w onder why it did come so fast and if you really want it to be over. The after thoughts work into reality as you remember that all your previous school times
happenings while moving toward new destini .es
were over and unable to be relived again. Graduation also came and past leaving you with a lifetime of schooling brought to a close. Along with the end of your senior year comes lost friendships and divided pathways For some these pathways lead to college or work, for others the paths lead to war and service, and for even others they lead to a completely new way of life in marriage. All pathways are new and make you more adult. But no matter where the pathways lead , you will never be able to forget where they al I began in the I ife of being a Rocket and in being a member of Lincoln Northeast High School.
Juniors find new doors of
opportunity
For the Class of '71 the year had come for those mind-searching tests they had heard so much about. The PSAT and National Merit tests refreshed the memories of students about concepts they had gathered over the years.
AFS finalists, Susie Bussear and Marjorie Reeves , went through the tense and exciting moments of being selected from LN. The County Government Day representatives participated in a unique day which ended in a seven-minute cramming session to summarize the events of the day.
"Where is it?" wonder AFS finalists, Susie Bussear and Mariorie Reeves as they anxiouslyawaitwordontheirplacementabroad.
This year's first semester class officers made extra money by selling basketball antenna toppers. Second semester class officers again spent many trou rs planning the annual junior-senior party.

some "firsts" in other classes opened the door of opportunity to juniors. The Madrigal group, formed for the first time at LN, sang at public and school programs.
Juniors who were in any of the singing groups this year found themselves to be TV celebrities as their Christmas program was televised over cable TV.
The math department had a first this year with the addition of a computer. It was connected to the University of Nebraska's computer and was constantly in use.
Clothing 3 was also a new class benefTcial to those who wished to continue in home economic related occupations. Construction of new garments, repairs, alterations, draperies, designing patterns and re-upholstering all were part of this class.

Sophomores take an active part at Lincoln
After that first day of hustle and bustle, things quieted down quickly as the Class of '72 prepared for a year of new discoveries and experiences. It was not long before those homework assignments were being given and sophomores found the new media center to be a help. It met all of their study needs and even provided things to do during spare time.
One of the first things sophs discovered was the wider variety of ways to spend their free time. Games, meets, plays and dances
were just a few. Homecoming, Turnabout and the Candlelight were new experiences. The May Day assembly was epecially exciting, sine~ members of the sophomore class were elected as royalty. Penguins, International Club and Science Club were a few of the activities in which sophs took an active part.
When it came to spirit, the sophs really had it. They made tough competition, after a slow start, when it came to ~he class victory yell at the rallies. It did not take sophs long to re-
alize how much they needed their guidance counselors. Schedule changes, school problems and a three-year plan that made sure all necessary requirements for graduation were met were just a few of the "helps" sophs received from their guidance counselors.
Since many sophs turned sixteen this year, they went through the nervous moments of trying for their driver ' s license.
But by the end of the year there was one lesson all sophs had learned. They now knew what it meant to be a Rocket.

Coach Bauer's boys finish with 6-2-1 mark
The 1969 Rocket football team experienced a change in coaching staff, as Art Bauer returned to assume his former duties as head football coach at Lincoln Northeast.
This change caused some early problems in trying to adjust to "Bauer Bal I" as the Rockets dropped two early games. However, as the season progressed the team improved enough to win the next five of six games, the other being a tie with Bellevue, and boast a season record of 6-2-1.

This effort earned the team fifth place ranking i n the state polls , the highest of any Lincoln team.
The imprints left on the football field this year were ones of hard work , determination and success. This success stemmed from the efforts of Coach Bauer and Assistant Coach Robert Els , and from the team members working as one unit. " Bauer ' s Boys" realized what it took to be a winner. The successful season proves that " Bauer Power" is back at Lincoln Northeast.

Powerful offensive, rugged defense, desire
The Rockets opened the season with a convincing win over the Fremont Tigers 24-9. Northeast displayed a powerful ground attack as they rushed to a total of 308 yards on the ground. The first touchdown of the season came on a 70-yard run by Quarterback Tom Novak. Other touchdowns were scored by End Mike Argello , reserve Quarterback Rick Genthe and Fullback Maury Damkroger Northeast suffered its first setback of the season in a hard fought contest against cross-town rival Southeast 19-7. The lone LN touchdown was scored on a 47yard run by Halfback Jim Smith This loss evened the LN record for the season at 1-1.

In an action-packed fourth quarter, the two teams struggled from an appare.nt East victory to a Northeast triumph and back again. A spectacular 80-yard punt return in the final quarter by Novak shoved the Rockets ahead 14-7 with only 8:32 remaining in the game. However, East scored again with just 36 seconds showing on the scoreboard and then made the crucial two-point conversion to capture a 15-14victory over the Rockets.
The Rockets got back on the winning trail as they defeated a tough Pius team 6-0. The two teams battled to a deadlock until the fourth quarter, when Argello broke through to block a Pius punt. This was the spark needed by LN as they marched the ball across the goal line for the lone touchdown of the game. The victory left the Rockets 2-2 for the season.

Improvement keynote
The rain didn't bother the Rockets as they rolled to a 33-0 victory over Lincoln High. The offensive line play was complimented by Coach Art Bauer as being the best performance this year. Players that composed the offensive line were Ken Hipple , Kipp Webb, Steve Westover, Lonnie Graul, Tom Adams , John Esquivel, Jack Hart and Argello. The highlight of the contest came on the last play of the game as End Dan Clapper caught a Mark Shields pass for 48 yards and a LN touchdown.
It was a happy homecoming for the mighty Rockets as they downed the Hastings Tigers 40-8. Outstanding plays of the game were a 90-yard punt return by Novak and a 65-yard jaunt by Damkroger, both fortouchdowns.
Northeast put together a powerfu I offense for a total of 306 yards rushing to drop Grand Island 3614 and collected LN ' s fifth victory of the season.

The scoring opened when End Webb grabbed an 18-yard aeria l for the touchdown. Webb later caught three other scoring passes, one for another TD and two for the two-point conversions. Other scorers in the game were Novak, Damkroger and Wright. The battle between the state ' s fifth ranked team, Northeast and the fourth ranked team, Bellevue ended in a 0-0 deadlock. The only serious scoring threat by LN came late in the third quarter as the Rockets moved to the Bellevue nine where the drive ended Bellevue's final attempt to score came in the waning seconds of the game when they drove to LN's two-yard line only to be stopped by a stiff Rocket goal line stand The tie left the Rocket record at 5-2-1 and still ranked fifth in the state.

Cited for their offensive play were Terry Danek, Rick Genthe and Jim Hertzel. Outstanding on defense were Larry Swenson, Chris Brown, Jerry Barnett and Steve Harris.
Even though the record posted by the Reserves was not outstanding, the Rocket fans salute the team's desire, drive and never give up attitude. With the valuable experience gained and the fine coaching received the reserve squad should successfully fill the vacancies on next year ' s varsity team and carry on the fine Northeast tradition.

The 1969 Northeast Soph-· omores ran to another winning season. Coached by Mr. Hank Willemsen and Mr. Robert James, the team scored a total of 183 points while holding their opponents to only 55 points, making for a 4-1-1 seasonal record. This gives the sophomore team a fantastic record of 33-4-6 over a period of eight years.
The sophomores' tradition of desire and determination was upheld again this year and proved to be the downfall of many Rocket opponents. Coach Willemsen cited the offensive line and the hard running backfield guided by Quarterback Gaylen Kennel and Backs Dwight Thompson, Tom Henson and Randy Sch leg el. Linemen Ed McMeen and Steve Stehr were also commended for their efforts.
The Sophomores in their first year discovered what is needed to be amember of a Rocket team. This experience combined with their ability s'tiould help them occupy the vacant slots on the varsity and reserve squads next year.

This finish was the highest ever achieved by a Northeast cross country team.
Before competing for the state championship at Pioneer Park, Coach Max Hester's runners swept firsts in the Fremont Invitational, Lincoln High Invitational, Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational, Lincoln Public School ' s championship and the district meet , while placing second only in the Trans-Nebraska conference meet.

Led by the five starters, Tom Novak , Maury Damkroger, John Strain, Greg Wright and Jim Sinner, the Rockets beat Southeast and East High to gain a berth i~ the state tournament in Omaha. Both of these district games went into overtime before the Rockets prevailed.
In the first round of the state tournament the LN cagers drew Boys Town. A Damkroger field goal with four seconds remaining in the game gave the Rockets a slim 57-56 victory. In the semifinals the black and white found the going a little easier as they glided to a 71-48 win over Scottsbluff. In the final game the Rockets showed their strength as they downed a tough Omaha Tech team 64-54. -
The victory gave Northeast its sixth state championship and the fifth under Coach Ed Johnson. The Rockets, with an 18-3 record, proved they were number one in the state.

Three days a school joins efforts to produce a champion excitement prayer confidence, conflict uptight seconds to go Victory
A glance backward to view an imprint of a year one which made a differe n , e asking questions seeking answers cheerleaders, councils clubs students thought the old wasn,t good enough a kaleidoscope of emotion s revolving around time and life exultations, joy, nervousness, fear, fatigue, jubilance, boredom, concentration, pride, lo v e striving for peac e tomorrow is another day.
1970 ROCKET
a journalistic experience student produced change, decision making work, deadlines anger regret finishing touches criticism joy, pride working together to produce a book of imprints.
To create a yearbook, people must care. Without an enthusiastic staff and .a patient adviser, this 1970 ROCKET would not have gone to press.
Special thanks go to the entire ROCKET staff and Mrs. Cathie Petsch, who really does deserve $60,000 a year.
