September 9. 1941 ...
" Coming up the temporary board walks students marvelled at the size of the building. As they entered the front passage they noticed the large trophy and show cases which flanked both sides of the hall.
" Walking directly across the hall from the child center , the first day students looked longingly at the cafeteria , which was soon to provide an eating place for the one thousand members of the school
"The building was now complete, the trophy cases were filling , organizations and clubs were showing their accomplishments. Northeast 's history was in the making and the first chapter was written.''
September 13. 1965

Twenty-five years later the enrollment has grown to 1700 students. However, Northeast has continued to grow , not only in the number of students , but in the school building itself. Nineteen fifty-four saw the 1 completion of the North gym and also in 1954 a new wing was added on the West side of the building. Another high school, East High , will soon be built to accomodate the increased enrollment. Truly the history of Northeast has been a history of growth.
In this book we will try to tell our story. A story ofYesterday. Today and Tomorrow

It is with pride and honor that we dedicate this, the 1966 ROCKET, to Miss Isabelle Smith, Miss Audria Shumard, Miss Elizabeth Shaver, and Mr. Bernard Galloway.
These instructors have been members of the faculty at Lincoln Northeast High School since its opening twenty-five years ago. Together they have contributed a century of service to their departments, to their school, and to the many students who have enrolled in their various classes.
They have served not only as instructorsthey have offered friendship, guidance, and wise counsel to pupils, to fellow teachers, and to all who have been part of Lincoln Northeast. They have shared their wisdom, they have exerted limitless and unending effort, and they have helped build the many traditions characteristic of this school.

Faith, ~orship, family become fundamental and
We at Lincoln Northeast have discovered the importance of faith and morals in a world of toil and turmoil. We have discovered, also, that these are implanted and nourished through the church and its activities and through the part we play as responsible and cooperative members of our families . ·

Through church choirs, youth organizations, and church school classes, spiritual and
moral values became basic and vital ; worship became increasingly important.
Through our homes we have learned to accept the responsibilities required of teenagers Some of us have even opened our homes to individua ls from foreign countries to share with them our culture Building on these foundations , we are prepared to accept our roles in the world of tomorrow.

Rockets traditionally
are part of their
community
This past year has marked many highlights for Northeast students as members of our community An important event for some was meeting Governor Morrison and having a personally conducted tour of his office. For the ROCKET staff the main highlight was winning the KMTV A ward for placing first in the Class A yearboo k contest and bringing home the trophy
However, these were not the only recognitions for Northeasterners. The Bethany Lions Club held their annual w atermelon feed to congratulate an outstanding football team, the band marched in city parades and three students went to Florida to a g ymnastics clinic.

Learning nurtures new
In our comm u nity a school is thought of as an institution designed for learning Some think of this learning as advanced study in mathematics , science, or history However , these are not the only types of learning.
We learn when we get along with others ; we learn when we realize the greatness of the United States in which we live ; we learn when we master some new g oal. This goal may . be an individual achievement or hobby , or it ma y be the achievement of a group as that demonstrated by the band as they lead a civic parade. The satisfaction we g ain from these experiences prepares us for our futures

skills, talents, and attitudes toward each other

Old fads returned this year, along ·with the new
During this past year Northeast not only followed the city-wide fads , but also developed some of her own.
Motorcycling, a favorite pastime of any teen in Lincoln, proved to be ex t ra popular this year as cycles became not only recr e ation , but also a mean s of tran s p o rtation Typical attire for this was "bell bottom" pants or matching shorts and knee highs. Northeast jackets were on many loyal Rockets.

As usual the traditional sweater and skirt outfit dominated the halls of Northeast along with many new fads, such as matching tops and socks, and U-neck shifts
For boys bonanza shirts and buckskin coats proved popular Saddle shoes were seen on both boys and g irls .

September , 194 l.
" As a democratic nation must have leaders with thoughtful judgment for present problems and a far-seeing vision for future planning , so the modern school must have a school board , superintendent , principal, and faculty The school board not only determines school policies but also advises and helps with all school and community projects .
" Teachers coun sel students about registration and the choice of subjects that will broaden interests, develop leadership, and prepare for vocational fitness. These are the
leaders who make our school the modern educational instit u tion it is today ."
September 1965 ..
The prime requirements of a school are an inquiring student body under the direction of a qualified and compe tent administration and faculty . Realizing this , Lincoln Northeast has always striven for these req ui rements . The library, the lab , and the classroom offer chances for higher learning at a hand's reach
We at Northeast realize this importance and continue to seek new knowledge through ..

With the end of Jackson, Bethany, and Havelock
Nineteen forty-one marked the end of Jackson , Bethany , an d Havelock High Schools. The schools combined , but the activities they e njoyed, the ideals they worke d fo r , an d t h e traditions they cherished still liv e in Lin c ol n Northeast High School.

Coming to Northe a st from the three s c hools were many teachers , four of whom have bee n here for all twenty - five y ears .

Administrators and Board of Education combine
As the school system grew and expanded, duties and responsibilities multiplied. Dr. Arzell Ball was employed to assist Superintendent Dr. Steven Watkins.
Complementing the Board of Education in overseeing particular phases of the public schools are Dr. Reed Schaefer, Dr. Rudy L. Fredstrom , and Rudy J. Bauer. Coordinating curriculums, supervising building maintenance, ordering supplies were part of their duties.
On the second and fourth Tuesday of the month the Board of Education meets to confer on school matters. The members are (seated left to right): Dr. John Lux, Dr. Steven Watkins, Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. Edward Copple Standing

H e anticipates the new problem s of th e ever rising student body, and takes steps to insure the best possible use of cla s sroom space. He also serves as the advisor of the S t udent Co unc il.

While serving as principal of Northeast for the past eight years , Mr. Taylor has been on an unending quest for better understanding between students and faculty.

More teachers are hired as student body grovvs
As our school continued to increase in enrollment, the need for teachers also increased. Each new school year demands the addition of more tea chers and this year saw another influx of newcomers when eleven new instructors came to Lincoln Northeast.
Of the eleven, five had been graduated from the University of Nebraska where one had been a member of the nationally famous Cornhusker football team. One was a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan while others came from Colora do and Massach us etts
Interesting facts came to light about the new facult y members and their families Mr Spadafore's wife is an elementary school teacher ; Mrs . Fowler's husband manages the new Abel Hall at the University of Nebraska and Mr. Leatherman's wife is a musical therapist. Naturally many of the teachers ' wives had the most important job of homemaking
Newcomers were not limited to the faculty. Upon the retirement of Mrs Fer guson, Mrs. Rutherford became the secretary and receptionist for the office, room 212.

Of prime concern to Mr s. Auld is Northeast's participation in the Neighborhood Youth Corps. She is in charge of hiring stud e nts for employment in the school.
Mr. Reeder stands in a maze of chairs. tables. and desks as a new demonstration area and student tables are installed converting room 306 into a science laboratory .

Cakes brighten office during Christmas season
Some events, though the y are not traditions, are continued from year to year, and this year proved no exception. During the holidays , the assistant principals and Mr and Mrs. Taylor do something nice for the faculty Whether it is a large assortment of candies or cookies or other delicacy, every member of the faculty appreciates the gesture.
Trying something new this season , Mrs. Taylor presented the teachers with four large chocolate cakes, gaily decorated to represent the season. The cakes were placed in the office and teachers were welcome to a serving.

Mrs. Vifquain , Mrs. Gast, and Mrs. Jacoby find hard work and determination are necessary to finish that paper they are completing for an evening class at NU.

Teachers' activities

often extend far beyond the Northeast campus
Watching over classes was not the only thing Northeast teachers did Members of the faculty could often be seen taking tickets, punching activity cards and cheering for Northeast at all home and many away games.
The home proved to be a popular place for t eachers' time A ll famili e s had activi ti es in which they participated and for the Schulz family it was having a priva t e band.
Many different interests occupied the leisure time of the adult members of Northeast. Some , like Mrs . Helen Krause , found time to participate actively in national organizations for teachers The men enjoyed hunting and fishin g and found time for this wheneve r possible No matter what they had planned, any member of the staff gladly remained to assist a student who required some additional help with lessons or assignments.

Capable assistants maintain office efficiency
Necessary for a smoothly operatin g organization are the office staff, which includes Mrs Hub ka, Mrs Fer guson , Mrs. Limbeck, and Mrs. Coll ister These ladies take care of correspondence and attendance , and handle students' requests for their high s ch ool a cad emic records to be sent to colleges

This year marked the resignation of Mrs Ferguson , who had served as attendance clerk, distributor of lockers, and memory expert of the administration office. Mrs Rutherford was employed to fill the vacancy.
Mrs . Pavey heads the bookroom , recording the money and receipts from all organizations and activities She also is in charge of books , supplies , and lost an d found .
Mrs . Witt , schoo l nurse, had the tremendo u s responsibility of periodically checking and recordin g each student's v ision , his hearing, height , and weight. She also helped administer all the tuberculin tests.
Mrs. Hubka utilizes the zerox machine for duplicating copies of letters, charts, and other important papers. Getting weighed and measured is an annual practice at Northeast. Recording all these is done by Mrs. Witt. Books are not Mrs. Pavey's only concern. She retrieves lost items and distributes activity tickets each month. Mrs. Ferguson. Mrs. Limbeck and Mrs. Collister team up to keep the offices running smoothly, efficiently.

Reading " Hamlet," winning the paper cup trophy for the class victory yell, taking part in the operetta and Rocket Revue, and being looked upon in awe by underclassmen all combined to make this a memorable year.
Soon, however, it was time for graduation; name cards had been passed out, senior pictures exchanged , and promises to keep in touch were given Putting on our caps and g owns, we realized that this was not another fitting ; this was the real moment for which we had prepared, and in another few hours we would not be Rockets in the active sense, but rather in the past, as alumni of Northeast.

Many gave of their time to participate in YM and YW activities , ranging from coaching after-school basketball games to teaching swimm ing . These seniors be c ame an influence on the characters of their younger friends.
The future holds much in store , for today's seniors are now ready to enter a world for which they are well prepared .

As school begins 15 seniors head the top 3 % list

AFS students promote International friendships
Each y e ar the American Fi eld S ervic e , known as A FS, provide s the opportunity for thou s ands of s tudents to live in foreign countries. They become members of a local family, and become, in a sense, a s on or daughter of the family during their s tay.

There are two A F S programs : the school se ss ion wh e re t he student s pends a year abroad, attending school there and taking the cour s es required by that school, or the summer program in which a s t udent lives in his adopted country for only two months.
This year Northeast again had two AF S students, Maria Porras from Pereria, Colombia, and Natalia (Nene) Mineque, from the Philippine Islands . Bev Wilson served as Northeast's representative abroad , going to Norway during the summer of her j unior year .
Northeast also had another foreign student , Hernan O rsi, from Cohabamba , Bolivia . Although Hernan was not here as a part of A F S, but was sponsored by a local church, students at LN were pleased to have him
Our relations with other countries are a growin g concern. The students of today are the adults of tomorrow and many feel one way to avert future conflict is meeting and living among people from other countries

AFS, electives, sports, proms, and preparation
The juniors of 1965-1966 found that t hey wer e much busier than they had been in their sophomore year . Those who were taking eight o ' clock classes fe lt themselves become early bir d s , b u t these birds didn't get t heir worms-only more homework College minded juniors foun d themselves taking the PSA T and Natio nal Merit tests , and those interested in math and science entered the Na t ional Mathemati c s Contest. Juniors mastered the art of takin g tests and coming out ahead

F ifteen juniors be came more aware of governmen t when they attended County Government Day on December 1. They were selected b y the ir A merican His tor y tea cher s. To qualify as a de le gate for an office each needed to have a three average in his history class.
Many other juniors competed for t he honor of being an American Fie ld Service stud ent. Th ere were many screenings before the two AFS stu d ents we re selected. The can didates for Bo ys and Girls State put to practica l use thei r knowledge of state go vernment b y setting up a model legislature , and by electing sta te , county , and local officials , and passing their own bills. All LN girls w ere invited to attend the S wee t hear t Ball, which was planned by an enthusiastic group of junior girls who also ser ved as hos tesses.
Fi rst semester officers , Treasurer Laura Le Harn e d and President Peggy Woodr u m have to "crack a sm il e " when Vice -President Nanc y Staberg and Secretar y Jim Campbell view LN juniors of twe n t-five year s ago.

The Class of '67 prepared for their Senior year
The Junior-Senior Prom highlighted the second semester activities sponsored by the Junior Class. It was financed by selling concessions at football and basketball games Class members volunteered their services, and found it enjoyable and profitable
All the students' years of education have been aimed toward the goals of their senior year and graduation. This year proved an important step toward this goal as many senior scholarships and honors are based on the activities and records of the junior year. The Class of '67 prepared themselves well, and they now look forward to an active year as seniors.

As the doors opened in September, over 500 eager sophomores entered Northeast. They brought with them feelings of anticipation, mixed with qualms of just what the year might hold. For days , crowded halls, lost ro9ms, lunch line scrambles, and 3: 15 confusion caused moments of panic.
However , they soon discovered that this frustration subsided as the y became adjusted to high school life. They seized the opportunity for participation in clubs, rallies, intramurals, and athletic programs. All these , ac-

Many familiar songs were heard April 29 and 30 when the choir presented the operetta " The King and I." This play, which takes place in Bangkok in the 1860 ' s , depicted the story of Anna, an English widow hired to teach the knowledge and customs of the Western world to the wives and children of the King of Siam. The children were completely won over by Anna , and the King learned a great deal about human values . Anna , too, found that she had been taught a precious lesson in humility Tuptim, a young wife of the King, and the young man Lun Tha provided a touching love story. The leads of the King and Anna were portrayed by Bob Thacker and Mary Heiliger. Sandy Nicolai and Bill Emanuel played the parts of Tuptim and Lun Tha with Seanne Detmer in the role of Lad y Thian g
The operetta differed from past years in that it didn ' t feature a mass chorus, but different groups required for each scene appeared throu g hout the production Groups consisted of dancers, priests, wives , slaves , Amazons, and twelve children The set construction was under the supervision of Mr . Harper and Mrs. Velma Snook directed the cast.

Students exhibit -talent and knowledge of drama
The drama classes put their knowledge and skill to work on April 5 when they presented " A Young Lady of Property," "The Devil and Daniel Webster," and "Shall We Join the Ladies." In previous years they had two evenings of one-act plays Because of smaller classes this year, it was decided to put on one night of three one-act plays
Mrs Reeder and Mr. Harper were the instructors for the productions. They were helped by student direc tors , Kathy Kells, Judy Jungers,

and Phyllis Leopold for each play. The drama st udent s experimented with making the scenery and finding the proper furni ture for each set. They made their own costumes and practiced application of make up.
The final drama activity was confron ted by the unexpected problem of relocation of class when the renovation and electrical crews began working in the room. Despite the obstacles, the handicaps were overcome and the outcome was t hree successful plays.
Mr. Harper and Doug Desch decide which props they will need for the production of the drama class plays.

ROCKET staff accepts challenge presented by '65
The ROCKET staff has the duty of " setting in words and depicting in pictures the life , traditions , and successes of Northeast students ." This has been accomplished by a hard working crew of twelve who relied more on inspiration than experience , as only three members worked on the yearbook last year .
The advertising staff , numbering only five, managed the all -important financial portion of the ROCKET. These girls did an excellent job of selling ads and quickly surpassed the $2000 goal which had been set for them .

Scheduling of pictures has been s implified by the addition of beige background curtains and a set of risers These were bought from the net profit of the preceding year and have come to be really appreciated .
The staff attended the journalism clinic to give and receive helpful suggestions That evening the ' 65 ROCKET received high distinction when a trophy was presented by KMTV and NU, honoring it as best yearbook from those submitted throughout the state. This honor presents a big challenge to the ' 66 staff .
Making sure that they have the correct name and spelling is one of t he many responsibilities of Lorna Stephen and Lynn Fuller, sophomore editors
