Nativ explore cultures, leadership
On September 13, 2008, 110 Native American Indian students from all of the high chools, and some middle schools, in LPS gathered at Lincoln North Star for the 4th annual Native American Student Leadership Conference.
This year students got a chance to hear from their elders, watch and learn to do a variety of traditional dance , work on arts and crafts, and even play a stick ball game out ide.
The keynote speaker was actor Eddie Spears, who has had role in such films as Geronimo, the TNT eries Into the West, and the HBO series Bury
My Heart at Wounded Knee. One of Spears' topics of discu sion was • ing the gap between native and
non-native culture
Local Native dance instructor Brandon Stabler also performed with some of his tudent on stage to showcase a variety of traditional dance and regalia. Stabler taught a workshop to introduce the students to some of the steps and the meanings of the dances.
Students also got some exercise by playing Stick Ball outside with Mickle science teacher Rousseau. Phyllis Stone discussed the history of ti pis and helped students make their own.
The day session ended with lunch and some final thoughts from Eddie Spears. The evening ession included an Indian Taco feed.- ,.u'tll"'~~

On Wednesday, November 19, Lincoln High opened its doors and hearts to one of its own. Ted Sorensen, an LHS alumnus from the class of 1945, returned to these hallowed halls to share some words of advice and encouragement with the 2,000+ students and staff of his alma mater.
While Sorensen visited LHS, he also spent time talking with current students who received a history lesson, while witnessing history in the making.
Sorensen, who is most famous as a speech writer and adviser to President John F. Kennedy, always attributed his love for debate and speech writing to his high school debate teacher, Florence Jenkins who instilled in him a love of the spoken word.
From the halls of Lincoln High, Sorensen ventured to UNL to earn his degree in law. As a college student, he was actively involved in local issues of civil rights. He assisted with integrating Lincoln establishments and he began dedicating his life towards civil and human rights issues. After graduating, Sorensen boarded a train bound for Washington D.C.
Having no place of employment arranged, he set out to make a career for himself. In this process, he came upon a young senator name John Kennedy and he found a place for himself in the world of politics.
Having served the country and world for the past 30 years, Lincoln Public Schools approved Lincoln High' s renaming of its theatre in honor of Sorensen's global contributions.
The Ted Sorensen Theatre will provide a place for future Links to launch their own journeys into history.
It was obvious to anyone who walked into our building (or to anyone driving by) that there wa omething big was happening at Lincoln High this year. Ask any stud about this school year, and they'll tell you that the construead an impact on them. Entire hallways have been blocked , rest ro m ed, and the normal route from one class to the other often got doubled as students had to find alternative routes.
Then there was the dust, and the smoke, and the noise. And let's not forget the numerous construction-related fire drills that sent us out into the cold for what seemed like hours at a time. But when it's all over and we're enjoying the new look of the school, it will all seem worth it.
The renovation to the school found its way into just about every comer of the building it seemed. In addition to a face lift for every classroom, hallway, and rest room, there were some even more ambitious projects. The Media Center, the Cafeteria, and the Auditorium were almost completely gutted and rebuilt. The Media Center lost its balconie , but it gained some classroom space and computer labs. It will have its main entrance directly across from the cafeteria which, when unveiled, will be a huge shock - and probably unrecognizable - to everyone. The cafeteria will be three times bigger than before, with more seating, and • e will be more advanced to get people through faster so students oth big diffi ren will be the light. ore than 1.2 million p ople are diagno d with cane reach y ar. Cancer is boming increasingly apparent rn our socletv. Most everyone can say that they have had som xperience with cancer, weather It be they themselves who had cancer, or a loved one. It wa s redicted over 182,000 women would be diagnosed with breast cancer In 2008. This cancer s estimated to kill about 40,000 women. As gloomy as the statistics seem to be, many people ave fought cancer and won the battle. At Lincoln High three teachers fought breast cance r nd survived. Nancy Grant-Colson, Lynda Graham-Rowe and Julia Doerr came together to ecall their cancer battles.
Grant Colson was the first to x erlence cancer, d a nos d In February of 2006. ft r eing diagnosed with breast cancer bot Doerr and Graham- owe looked to Grant-Colson fo r dvice ancl support. Graham-Rowe noted "It was very encouraging to know someone h re in he building had gone though It (battling cancer) before,_" she exprained further saying, "wh n told my students about my diagnosis many of tt1em saia 1Mrs. Grant-Colson went through It it Ill be ok.' 0 Both Graham-Rowe and Grant-Colson battled cancer during the school year while oerr battl d it during the summer. Graham-Rowe and Grant-Colson shared many of the same eellngs about being a cancer patient and a teacher. "Som days I just came to school so ired from treatmenfl just sat behind my desk and asked the studE nts to work." Graham-Ro ecalled. The thr omen had very Int resting storie to share about th ir battle 1th brea t ncer, but amongst th stories they made very clear the importance of women going in for outine mammograms and having health Insurance. Grant-Colson said, 11 lf one tiling ls o n ut of the Interview I hope that It is the Importance of mammograms. MAMMOGRAMSrOGRAMS! MAMMOGRAMS!" Doerr noted, "When breast cancer Is caught early It makes suc;h difference. Women need to be proactive, I found my cancer through a self examination." oerr found the cancer before it was even detectable on a mammogram. After finding th lum he went In for a mammogram. The mammogram did not detect cancer but she Insisted on ooklng further. Sure enough the cancer was detected In an ultra sound. Doerr found It early nougfl to side ste_g radlatron. She emphasized how important It Is to react to a possible sign f cancer saying, If you feel a lump insist on getting checked." Grant-Colson also found h r ancer though s If-examination. Graham-Rowe's cancer was found In a routine mammogram, check tharshe almost skipped due to the cost. Grant-Colson noted the Importance of having ealth care saying "There ~re people that die because they do not have health care and canof afford treatm nts. I was so thanldul to hav Insurance when I w nt to th pharmacy to g t ypill s ." Although all three women are cancer survivors th y are not cur d of can~ r. A v ry_ ommon misconception about cancer Is that once patients finish treatment they ar cured. Th s false. There Is no cure for cancer. All three women shared experiences of people coming to hem saying "Well you are cured now right?" Though all three women are cancer free, th y ar ot cured. Though there Is no cure for cancer at thfs point many advances ar being mad in his effort. The survival rates are constantly improving with new medical research and technoly. All three women are roof than one can battle cancer and win. All are positiv about th ir u re, and ha found tru h In th stat m nt "Don't sweat th small stuff "

LHS Business c~ more than just book work
By Cassandra Schnell
"The business department at Lincoln High is Involved with diverse educational offerings that offer something for every student," Economics teacher John Brady aid. There is a wide range of business classes at Lincoln High that will prepare you for nything you would want to do when your years at high school are over, Brady added. One of those classes, Applied Economics, teaches manufacturing and selling kills. Students run their own company that teaches first hand about business practices, and they actually have a chance to make real money if their business succeeds. Students create T-shirt designs and predict how many they can sell. Top sellers even arned money from the sales. During first semester there were three students who ach earned $80: Junior Alli Kafka sold the most, followed by junior Josh Breyer, and unior Christopher Allen.
DECA students also created products to sell, and they passed on their profits o worthy causes. "We have taken on a huge civic project," senior Amy Ngo said. "We are going to change the world. It's what DECA does," Ngo added. This year DECA old "pink" cookies to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation, and they put n a BBQ to raise money for the troops in Iraq. Things like MP3 players to reading aterials which were then later sent to the troops in Iraq. But that's not all. Also this ear DECA went to Central Region Leadership conference which was held in Kansas City where students from the Midwest states came together to become better leaders nd socialize. , From the studies, the students learned that : m urals depict messages of culture, politics, : hi story, etc. We brought in pictures of local murals from around Lincoln and shared them with the class. There had been a write-up in the Lincoln newspaper, with photos, of a local mural, so we shared that with the class, as well. We then assigned the students to design and create a mural that would depi ct their personal cultures. Some students w orked together and created shared murals, w hich added to the beauty and diversity of th e murals. Each student wrote a paragraph describing their mural and explaining what some of the pictures symbolized. We then vi deotaped the students presenting their murals to the class, explaining what they had drawn and what everything represented in their cultures. For the KZUM Project, we m ade audiotapes of the students reading th e paragraphs they had written about their m urals. -Story by Ms. Linda Lopez

Early in the /&r, scribe had to do some fund raist1' ing, so they did bake sales, wrote letters to businesses, then eventually sold there Scribe Books to students and staff. A lot of people are easily frustrated by math, and almost daily someone tries to argue that their math class is pointless. Math department chair Janice Patterson noted this being one of the difficult parts of teaching math. "It is very challenging to keep the kids motivated and engaged/' Patterson said. Many students express to her the feeling of "being forced to take a math class." But what would happen if we never learned math? Thanks to all the good math teachers here a Lincoln High we won't have to worry about that.
At Lincoln High there are 14, math teachers. Patterson described the Lincoln High Math Department as "diverse." We have teachers that are 25 and teachers that are 60." She thinks the diversity of the math department is helpful. Students are able to learn from different perspectivessomething that is helpful in any kind of learning.
Many students fail to see how math will help them later in life. Patterson says kids always want to know, "When will I ever use this?" Math is important for everyone Even though the students may not necessarily use the specific math skill they are learning anytime other than in the

This year at Lincoln High the big hit was the Fruit of the Day. During the summer and last year Student Council worked on the Whatcha' Doin'? program, and because of their hard work we got to have free fresh ruit every day using the fruit grant money. The Whatcha' Doin'? program as to promote the cool way of doing physical activities and eating healthy z-~~!!!~by choosing fruits and vegetables instead of unhealthy snacks like chips or cookies
Student Council also sponsored Homecoming and Prom for which they raised money over the summer during a g_ar wash and with other fund-raisers.
Not only as StuCo helped out Lincoln High, they also helped out the community by sponsoring a food and blood drive twice during the year.

ow much does basketball mean to you? Well to some, it may mean nothing more that a game, ome may think of it as a way to see friends at the games, and o others it may mean all of that plus all hey think of during the season. This is •ow the Lincoln High Boys' basketball earn is. All of the teams show hard work and dedication while playing. Not o mention outstanding teamwork. Will Smith is the boys ' freshman basketball oach and there are eleven boys on the freshman team. Richard Jackson coaches the boys' reserve team, and one of their goals is "to play as a team and give 100% all of the time. " There are eleven boys on the reserve team and they are all sophomores. Coach Jackson said when asked, what is practice like? "Very intense. All players are trying to play at a high level." With everyone playing at a high level and competing, they are off o a great start! Mark Larson is the head V boys ' basketball coach and there are also eleven boys on the team. (2 Freshmen, 4 Sophomores, and 5 Junior s) Coach Larson says "Our goal as a team •s to give our best effort everyday and to get better everyday. Outside of that , wins and losses will com e. The guys have said that our goal is to win the city tournament at the end of the season. " reat Job to all of the teams this year!
