<The Curtain !l(ises

As the Curtain Rose on the 1995-96 school year, the Links were ready, as always, for the show. Seniors prepared for the final act, while the sophomores opened and the juniors linked the two. Students, administrators, and staff all had to improvize around the stage of changes, while keeping a strong link with "High" traditions.

The new administrators, Dr. Michael Wortman and Ms. Cynthia Richardson adjusted to a school of twenty-one hundred. Teachers adjusted to new classes and classrooms. The sophomore class found new activities and niches, the junior class worked hard and kept school spirit strong, while the senior class battled ACTs, college and job applications. Students needed the six-minute passing period to take the south building detour. The construction added another new gym and swimming pool, and linked the south and main buildings.

The changes added another link to the chain of Lincoln High history, and so, our show remains strong.

When the doors opened for the first day of school this year, summer was officially over. Students had done many different things during their days away from Lincoln High . "I worked for Kaser Painting this summer," said senior Jason Crandal. Many students worked over the summer, trying to save up for college or cars. Other students traveled to all corners of the world. Some visited friends and relatives, some traveled for athletics, others went to common summer vacation spots. "I went to Kansas City and to Worlds of Fun.,, Said sophomore Eric Magorian.

Some students experienced things they had never done before. "I went to a rodeo in Burwell, Nebraska," said senior Sarah Carpenter. • And then there were the students who spent their summer getting read~ to come back to school. Students also took the opportunity to take aptitude tests. Senior Kari Oppergard said, "Summer was a good time to take them t5ecause I didn't have to worry about the normal .stresses of school.,, Some were ready to come back to L.H.S. and some weren't but once again they came back and began another year.

Late Show with Linco{n %gh

The theme of this year's Homecoming was Late Show with Lincoln High. During the summer and the first month of school, the Pomalinks and their parents worked very hard to ensure that the September 22 event would be a success. the cheerleaders shared in the responsibility of homecoming with the Pomalinks.

Spirit Week lead up to the Homecoming extravaganza. The purpose was to get students all fired up with school spirit for the big football game against North Platte. Despite all the espirit built up that week the Links were defeated by

North Platte 26- 7.

This year, there was Homecoming royalty from every class. It was the Pomalinks 1 decision to do this to begin to have more voices in the Homecoming royalty tradition. The King and Queen were Erich Warner and Lindsay Gilmore. The Prince and Princess were Juan Lozano and Dara Wagner. The Duke and Duchess were Justyn Savage and Nicole Huff.

The highlight of the evening was the appearance Ross Tegeler as David Letterman. As the Pomalinks stated in the Homecoming promotional top ten, everybody who is anybody was there.

To make it a more personalized look more people decorated their own room. So just how long long does this task take? Most spent only a day or two on it. Students' Costumes: Once -9Lgain 'Diverse

The styles of Lincoln High students varied again this year. One of the most commonly seen outfits was the basic jeans and a t-shirt. "I saw a lot of people wearing Massimo, No fear, and Nike clothes." Sophomore Brandon Jones said. But not everything was so basic. Things such as knee-high socks, crop tops, corduroys, , big baggy jeans, and the new "Air walk" shoes all popped in and out of Lincoln High hallways and classrooms this year.

Most students agreed that they wear what they are comfortable in and that at Lincoln High there really wasn't a specific "in" style. Styles rar)ged from the "sporty" look to the " second hand" styles. Junior Alex Dunn said, "There really isn't any such thing as outrageous. Everybody wears what they want."

So once again, Lincoln High school was splashed with as much diversity in style as with students.

Five foreign exchange students made their way from their countries to Lincoln High. Some came because the program interested them or they heard about it through friends.Whatever their reasons were for coming, their trip to Lincoln was quite memorable.

Lincoln High was different than the schools the students attended in their countries.

Junior Judith Keizer from Uden, Netherlands said "School is better here because I can choose from different classes."

"You have to be 18 before you · can get a car in Germany," said junior Meike Tuefel of Schwalbach, Germany.

"The people in the U.S. don't take things as serious as they do in Germany", saidsenior Sebastain Scheiblich, of Dresden, Germany.

The kicking blues kept students dancing 1til after dark, but others had different expectations.

"Last year 1s Link-up was more fun because it w9s before school started. It was better because everyone went to see their friends" said Tracy Brown.

Last years Link-up was held inside the gym. Most students agreed that having it outside was a nice change.

Junior Jenni Grant said, "It was a lot better this year outside. It wasn't as hot or crowded."

Many students left after the pep rally. Pomalink Angel.· Ramirez said, "I had to perform and then I left to change. By the time people got changed to go out, they didn't bother coming back."

Although many students had heard Baby Jason and the Spankers before, members of Deco thought it would be a nice change to have a band.

Carrie Atkinson said, "We thought Baby Jason and the Spankers would be a good band because the members were from Lincoln High, so lt showed school spirit."

Prepared Performers

Students at Lincoln High School prepared for the opening night in their own unique ways. One thing that put many students 'on stage' yvere the lessons they took to help them prepare.

Senior Jennifer Ahlm took voice lessons for a year and practiced everyday for about an hour. "I enjoyed them because they gave me more confidence as a vocalist and performer," she said. By taking lessons, senior Elizabeth Schuller enhanced her cello playing and continued to progress. Schuller

made her debut as the senior soloist for the Lincoln Youth Symphony. Golfer senior Susie Kiene said, "Lessons definitely help you progress." She felt it was important to get feedback from another person who is skilled in that area.

Junior Heather Knight also agreed. She has taken horseback riding lessons for five years and feels she does better when she is told how to control the horse. "I ride in shows to show off the horse and the ability I have achieved."

Students who took lessons progressed in their own ways and were stars in the spotlight.

Parking and time constraints, however, didn't hinder most students from heading out to lunch . Lincoln High students listened to music and went to concerts this year. They went to different shows, but the main reason they went was to see the bands they liked live and in person.

Ryana Markey, sophomore, said "Concerts are loud and the people are cool. Plus, I. can escape from my everyday life."

"The show is always better if the crowd is cool and respectful," said senior Missy Fiedler. "You need to have plenty of room to dance." If the crowd is violent, it's hard to enjoy the show.

As the weeks came to a close, one of the most popular topics of conversations at school was what was on tap for the weekend. From coffee shops to parks, each student had their own idea of where to go for a . good time. Junior Cherie Kesselring said that she and her friends spent time at American Legion Park. She said, "I feel like I need to go out on the weekends so I will be ready for the next week of school."

Another popular place for students to hang out was the downtown area. Senior Shannon Samson said, "Me and my fr;ends like to go the Hay Market and get ice cream at Ted and Wally's." Sophomore Shan-

non DeGarmo liked to go to the movies with friends, and was looking forward to getting her drivers license so she would have more freedom. Some Links liked to spend their weekends more spiritually. Senior Jud Griffith enjoyed spending his Friday nights with The ~avigators (A UNL Christian Club), and with members of Campus Life. Sophomore Tim Coleman said, ''I'm usually grounded," but when he wasn't, he played sports and spent time with friends. Student Jobs

At 2 :46 p.m. or earlier many students leave school without prior obligations while others have another few hours of responsibility left; those students go to work.

Many students at LHS preferred work to school. This was mainly because work required less brain power than those 50 minute classes . Senior Lisa Holthaus preferred work because she" doesn ' t have to carry it around in a backpack all day."

A majo rity of LHS students spent their paychecks on their cars. They also had the usual clothes, fast food, and music expenses

Everyone agreed -that the best part of their job was

"getting paid."

Through their jobs, most students learned several special skills. Human relations, communication and keyboarding are just a few of the many skills gained in the workplace. Veronica Lear said , "I've learned how to be a darn good cashier." . Jeff Melichar said,''l'm very good at organizing things," in reference to his job.

Employed students attending Lincoln High took the extra step toward standing on their own and being independent. For them, that spending money was a worthy result.

rrfie Lin~' Swinging Season

Although this wasn't Lincoln High's best year, the reserve team got off to a good start this season by defeating Northeast and later beating East. Later, J.V. beat Pius X. "We did pretty good in city." J. V. player Pete Moore stated about their placing second in city.

So how did they compare to the other Lincoln High Schools? Sophomore Bryson Monroe simply said, "We were better than the other teams."

Lincoln High's Reserve tennis team ended the season placing fourth in city. The Varsity team wound up with four wins and five losses which showed some strength in the team.

Although the Lincoln High Gymnastics team was young this year, the gymnasts worked hard to make it a rewarding and enjoyable season. The team practiced almost every day after school. And although these practices were used tor coaching, technique, and improvement the team managed to have some fun. "A ·1ot of people crashed and I got pied on my birthday," said Junior Mark VanAndel.

After practicing and preparing, the Links were ready to compete and they did well. "I think that we (the team) did very well this year, and we even won a meet against East!" said sophomore Monica Ryan.

In the end, friendships were stronger, the team had more experience and new memories had been made.

The swimming and diving teams were at a disadvantage this year because new swimming facilities were being built at Lincoln High. "This year was harder because we had to go to Southeast to practice," senior Jenny Schultz said.

Both teams wanted to go to state and practiced hard. "We practiced dives until we could get them really good," sophomore Shannon Murray said.

• Coach Richard Conradt "helped us improve our stroke and flip turns," said junior Ryan Luedtke.

"He (the coach) was big on attitude. We talked about our attitude and tried our best to prepare ourselves for our meets," Schultz said.

Despite the change in their practice location the teams worked hard and looked forward to practicing in the new pool at Lincoln High. •

"I just dig wrestling," said junior Ken Johnson, a returning letterman to the wrestling team. For members of the wrestling team, it wasn't easy glory; it "does take commitment, dedication and sacrifice," added Johnson.

Lincoln High wrestlers practiced six days a week, between two to three hours per day. Practice began in November, with nine r'eturning lettermen. The other seven weight classes were filled by novice wrestlers.

Coach Bob Orta enjoys wrestling because it's a "one-on-one sport. It's just two people, nobody else. If you make a mistake, you have nobody to blame but yourself." Senior Cory Lyons also "likes the individuality."

The Lady Links accomplished one of their main goals this year, winning districts -and going to the state tournament.

So how do these girls prepare mentally for games? Junior Kate Howard said, "Erin Brestel always boosts everybody up, because she's always excited for the game."

Freshman lsha Kelley gets ready by, "Not saying nothing to nobody. I have to talk to myself about what I need to do."

Even though they had a great season, the one thing a lot of the girls would like to have done differently was to beat Lincoln Southeast.

The 1995-1996 Boys' Basketball team hit the court running this season with a combination of playing experience and cooperation.

Though the team got off to a rocky start, senior Paulo Van den Berg was confident that they would shine this season. Said Van den Berg, "We have a solid core of eight or nine players that can come in and compete with anyone in Class A. We're a team that will come together and •surprise a lot of pe .ople."

Seven of the twelve team members are seniors, but several sophomores and juniors round out the talent and ability of the Varsity team. As Van den Berg stated, "We have an experienced team with depth in all positions."

Concentration Afakf,s Success

It's lunch time. Most students are thinking about what they are going to do that weekend , but not Jamie Baade and most of the other J. V. and Reserve basketball players. They're thinking about success.

"Throughout the day I think about the game and situations that might happen. I try to work through them in my head," sophomore Jamie Baade said.

Every player .has a different reason for trying out and committing 12 hours of conditioning sweat , whether it be to stay active or for the love of the sport.

One thing was agreed by many of the players , they don ' t play for the uniforms.

"When I put on my uniform I feel like a dork. The shirts are ugly but it's not the uniform that counts; it's if you play and how you play," said sophomore Jamie Crandall.

The uniform. To some, it is just a requirement and a way in which players can identify each other on the court, but not to Nathan Gieck and many other of the J.V. and reserve players. To them the uniform, meant much more.

"When I put on my uniform it makes me feel proud that I made the team. It also makes me think about winning for the school."

"It makes me feel good that I'm playing for our team. It reminds me of our goals and it's when I first realize I'm about to play a game," said Brian Rodaway.

Although the uniform holds the pride, the team goals are what carries through for a winning season. Goals were important whether they be individual or goals the team had as a whole.

"I just hope for the team to have a winning record, play better with each other and have fun," added Gieck.

The most memorable year in during high school was my junior year. I didn't have anything to worry about like the sopho mor e jitters or busy worrying about college or what to do after high school.

High School was a great learning experience for me. It taught me a lot about the presswres I may be facing fur• ther on in my education and my life like racism and social acceptance. I was involved in many extracurricular activities and that helped greatly in forming my leadership skills and I was able to work with a great variety of people. I like working with people and think this would help prepare me for the outside world.

Going to LHS was very special because there were many groups of people. I was always able to find someone with the same interests as myself. Sometimes you have to put a little effort in finding these types of people but once you do you will enjoy your whole high school career.

As high school experiences go I'm sure Lincoln High gov me everything I needed and then some. It offered me chance to discover who I am and maybe who I'm going t be. I learned everything I ever wanted to know abou people I never even knew existed. The three years I spent here definite! a call to reality, perhaps out own little "Real World", different emotion and opposite opinions.

I don't wish to dwell on my high school experience, only remember th direction that it pointed me, and keep the friends it gave me . I am read to move on , reminded of the past and focused on the f~ture.

1111 never forget walking into this building for sophomore orientation and thinking, 'This school is huge!" I was nervous and yet at the same time I was excited. I couldn't wa it t o become a Link. Little did I realize the challenges that were about to face me.

Seniors Angel Ramirez and Courtney Knippel take time out from busy schedules to smile for a picture.

These past three years at Lincoln High have taught me a great deal. I have learned that things will not always turn out the way that they are expected. I have learned that teachers truly care abou't their students, and I have also learned the importance of true friendships. I've had some special teachers who have helped me in many ways throughout these three years. They've helped me to prepare for 1 the next four years of my education. Thank you.

I've also seen myself grow. I realized that I have the control over my future and my life. I've had four great friends who have helped me through everything. Thanks girls.

I definitely was proud to be a Link, and I walk away from Lincoln High School with memories that will last me a lifetime. •

In the famous words of Winston Churchill, 11 This is not the end, this is not the beginning of the end, but perhaps it is the end of the beginning. 11 As the beginning draws to an end, many take time to reflect on lessons learned and experiences gained. Lincoln High has offered both lessons and experiences, ranging from academic preparation to leadership skills. Perhaps, even more valuable are the lessons learned about relationships with other people. Even this . small world of Lincoln and Lincoln High teaches that people are infinitely different, and yet so much a like . The past three years have shown the wide range of abilities and interests in people. As students prepare to venture out into the wide world, many more people, experiences and lessons will be learned and gained. The beginning has shown that all these must be met with an open mind and heart.
