Three Lincoln High students appreciate the school Many great friendships were formed here.
Because of the many adjustments and transitions made this year, another word that could be used to sum it all up is change. Change showed its face in a variety of ways this year. Whether · through one of the newly-hired campus supervisors or the new female principal, from the beginning, students could tell that this year wasn't going to be the same.
Another new attendance
• policy was put into effect trying to finally curb the problems of truancies and tardies. Along with this came new lunch regulations requiring sophomores to stay in the cafeteria for the first time in many years. To give the sophomores a few more choices in cuisine, the cafeteria became a regular food court offering pizza , sandwiches, and other items from places such as Valentines, Little King, and
By Hannah Eskridge McDonalds.
A new child care program became available offering student parents new opportunities to attend school. There were also new clubs formed such as a Women's issues club.
Bekka Meyer, a junior active in Student Council, Pomalinks, and Varsity Swing Choir was unhappy with some of the changes made. •She considered the new lunch and attendance policies to shelter and baby-sit students.
"The new policies showed regression. It was moving backwards, notforward," Meyer said. Although Meyer said there were few times when she had been directly affected by the changes, she thought they were a hassle. Meyer, however, did like the new principal. "She seemed very open and willing to interact with students," Meyer said
Julie Paschold, a senior, liked the new lunch policy. "I enjoyed it because i t offers choices," said Paschold.
Paschold understood why some people disagreed with the new program, but she understood why the administration put it into effect.
"I haven't directly been effected by the new policies, but it can be a hassle if you forget your I. D card," Paschold stated.
At first, many students considered it a nuisance to pull out the card every day, but were pleasantly surprised when the campus supervisors started to recognize faces and no longer carded them.
The year was full of change, but through it all, Lincoln High remained strong and continued to display, "A Show of Variety."

Education does not neccessarily end when the doors of Lincoln High School close. This summer, manystudentsspenttime in classes and other activities learning about a variety of subjects.
Bisola Ojikutu, a senior at Lincoln High, spent five weeks at Boston University participating in the Institute for Television, Radio, and Film Production. The Institute was actually a class in which students studied in three different areas: film, television studio, and television field. During the five weeks, Ojikutu worked on many projects, including four commercials, a public service announcement on racism, and "a three-minute film about a guy who lost his pants."
Ojikutu, along with seniors Anil Seth, Thao Pham, Ryan Wylie, Noah Walsh, Amy Paschold and Julie Paschold also attended the ' Nebraska Scholar's Institute. The students stayed on campus at UNL from June 13 to June 25 while participating in classes. The classes were divided into two areas: Arts and Humanities, and Math and Sciences.
Julie Paschold took classes in the Arts and Humanities area, which she felt was a good learning experience. "I took a class from Bill Kloefkorn. Iliked the idea thatwestudiedwitha Nebraska Poetlauriet. Ialsolikedthatwecouldcallteachers, like Mr. Ferris, bytheirfirstnames it was pretty informal."
Ryan Wylie enjoyed the '1amily groups", which were made up of a small group of students and a facilitator. "It was just a place where you could get together and talk about what went on, what you enjoyed throughout the day." said Wylie.
Lincoln High juniors Falla Halsey, Eric Crump, Brandy Markesan, and Steve Rich took part in activities through the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The group was recently recognized as a United States Chapter of the NAACP. The activities included picnics, a trip to the national seminar in Kansas City, and a seminar hosted by Gallup. At the seminar, the students met with analysts from Gallup who helped them plan for "career opportunities, college, and beyond," said Rich. The analysts also "helped us figure out what we want for ourselves."
It is obvious that many students see education as a continual and constant activity, not one that ends with the ringing of the bell.

The bell rings and it's out of school and into the lazy, hazy days of summer. These past summer days were ones of hanging out with friends, going to far off places and experiencing new and exciting things.
"I didn't do much this summer, " said Sophomore Elizabeth Schuller with a sigh.
Junior Sarah Peters was a bit more descriptive about her summer of extensive treking. "I loved being in North Carolina. I would just sleep all day on the warm sand, with the gentle sound of waves in the background."
Peters was also in Brooklyn , New York for one month as a

nanny for a friend of her family. "My favorite part was walking around with the two -year-old in the neighborhood. You could see families hanging out on the front stoop, and little old ladies walking to the delicatessen every morning to buy salami. It was the whole atmosphere. I was able to see a part of Brooklyn that tourists usually don't see, I was in the neighborhood, not upper Manhattan ," Peters said.
Senior Noah Walsh had a somewhat relaxing summer also. He was among selected students that participated in Nebraska Scholar' s institute. This two week camp allowed Walsh to take classes ranging from Drama to Anatomy. "I got to see cadavers,"
Walsh said with a smile
Walsh said that it was exciting when one of his dreams came true this summer , " I played Cyrano in Cyrano De Bergerac, a play I have always wanted to be in."
Junior Carrie Pierce had a busy summer filled with camps and travel. "I went to Young Life camp in Minnesota. I went to a Student Council summer workshop at Wayne State College." .Pierce's favorite moment of all of her adventures was at young life camp. "I went parasailing. It Wq.S wonderful , it feels like you are flying."
Whatever the adventure, it was clear that variety was the spice of last summer.

Students Sh_Qw .Off Their Job Skills
By Christine Damon and Jaime Stoll
Lincoln High students worked for a variety of reasons this year.
Dating b~ck even as far as Bedrock, high school students have had jobs. Whether they be for extra. cash, senior pictures, car insurance or to help out the family, part-time jobs were not hard to come by.
Many students were employed at grocery stores all around Lincoln. Hinky Dinky ~as one very popular place for the students from Lincoln High to work. Sacking groceries, working at the service desk, checking out and restocking were just a few of the positions available at supermarkets. Chas Clauss , a junior, sacked groceries at Hinky Dinky. Basically he
worked there to earn extra spending money and to pay for the insurance of his car. Other students worked at such stores as Hy-Vee , Save-Mart, Russ's IGA and Super Saver.
Fast food restaurants also employed a lot of high school students. At Amigos, McDonald's, Runza , and Subway, many Lin- · coin High students were found taking orders, preparing food and cleaning up our messes! We found Dan Miiler to be one of those hardworking Runza employees. Miller worked aboutfourtofive nights per week for approximately eighteen to twenty hours per week. For over
a year Runza restaurants have had . the privilege of having Miller as an employee. Miller feels that his work experience didn't interfere with his school work although he did come home tired every now and then.
A lot of sophomore students didn't have jobs, but with the help of their careers classes they became more prepared for the work experience. Theresa Spitzer was excited about working and hoped to get a job at Gallup Poll. Mock interviews helped Spitzer set future goals.
Part-time jobs were a good way for students to ·1earn responsibility and earn money at the same time

Music is an important
part of life for Lincoln
High Students
Variety of Music in the Mix
by Erin Hansbrough
Music has always been a topic of interest to Lincoln High students. Whether it was country, punk, rap , or classical, most students listened to music as often as they could.
"I could easily say that Primus is my favorite band," said junior Jeremy Woerner, "and Tony Bennet rocks."
Senior Johnny Smith said his favorite bands were "probably Screeching Weasel, the Queers, and Minor Threat."
"My favorite singer in the whole world is Suzanne Vega," said sophomore Suzanne Evans. "I also really like Lemonheads ."
When asked which album he listem he listened to the most, sophomore Eric Verhar said,"Of the Pixies, probably 'Doolittle'. I
also listen to Mousetrap alot."
Junior Ellie Redfield said, "I listen to a lot of mix tapes. , with stuff like Pearl Jam, the Breeders, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Cure."
All of the students interviewed agreed that they listened to music as often as possible "I listen to music every waking hour of the day, except at school , because they won't let me," said Evans.
Local bands were also popular with some students. "In support of one of the greatest bands in the last two years, I have to say that 'God Protects Fools ' by Mercy Rule (a Lincoln band) is one of the best albums, " said junior Eric Maly.
Woerner also liked Mercy RuJe, and added "311 {from Omaha} is
real swell. P-Nut , anyone?"
Some Lincoln High students also played in bands. Members of Plastik Trumpet,Superglue, and Mommy all attended LHS.
The students interviewed also agreed that they listened to different music according to their mood or what they were doing.
"I really like classical, so if I'm mellow, I'll listen to that," said Redfield.
"The Smiths are great just after finals," said Maly.
Evans seemed to sum up how some students felt about the importance of listening to music. "I have to It keeps me from going C a Z y ! "

A Variety ot Lunch Ac1ivities
- By Scott Brennfoerder and Elizabeth Barajas
Lunch, was it an adventure in school food, or an exciting trek into the world of burgers and fries? Sophomores, juniors and seniors alike seemed1o agree that closed campus wasn1 much of a problem. The lunch policy at Lincoln High was more like that little mosquito flying about your face when you are trying to relax it's a nuisance
"It is a nuisance to show your ID to the same people everyday," commented senior Pat Trinh. When going out to lunchjuniorsandseniorshadtoflashtheirl.D. cardtowhomever may be guarding the doors to the outside world. An identifying dot was their pass to freedom from heartburn.
Junior Jessica Mefford agrees with Trinh in that taking out the •card took up time and was a nuisance. Susan Briggs a campus supervisor, said that there was not much of a problem in kids trying to leave without designated permission.
Students had a choice of the normal school lunch which included the salad bar, pizza from Valentines and sandwiches from DaVinci's. Students with Mac attacks, unfortunately were notsatisfiedwiththeselection in the McDonaldsstand. However, there was a new, large supply of candy available that was not around in years past. Becky Schupbach, a sophomore at LHS laments, "Where is the cheese pizza! The needs of vegetarians and people with special dietary requirements are notadaquately met."
Sophomore Kacey Prescher agreed with popular opinion, "You get sick of pizza and hamburgers everyday. Also they are cold most of the time."
As per school lunch policy, sophomores were required to remain in school during their lunch period. Though a nuisance in principle, in practice, the new codes were not much of a problem. " It seems that we are the experimental class." says Tony Relys, a sophomore. Most said that they never tried to _ sneak out. But most of the sophomores interviewed have contemplated it.
"I have plotted and schemed. I'm just waiting for my junior friends with cars," said Schupbach.

Fall Play led By Strorng Cast
By Stephanie Mahoney
To
Be Young, Gifted and Black showed a wider variety of students and talent; gave a ne~ meaning to the term 11 all school play 11 •
(le f t) Noah Walsh takes the spotlight during this year 's fall play.
This year's fall play , To Be Young, Gifted and Black , not only proved that Lincoln High students had talent , it also showed off their uniqueness and diversity.
The play was based on the biography of Lorraine Hansberry , a black playwright who became the youngest American , the fifth woman , and the first African-American dramatist to win the Best Play of the Year Award of the New York Drama Critics for one of her plays. To Be Young, Gifted and Black moves back and forth in time , from her early childhood in the ghettos of Chicago to her death in 1965.
This play was chosen by director Joe Kreizinger because he thought it was an excellent play . " It meets all the criteria of what a good play is to me ," he said.
Some scenes from the play were presented as part of the Lincoln Public Schools Staff Development Program so all teachers .in Lincoln would have a chance to see it. The entire play was also presented again in February , sponsored by the UNL African-American Studies program
This year' s all school play turned out to be a great success. Part of it was due to the hard work and • dedication of everyone involved. According to Susanne Evans, a sophomore , the play came together well because of all of the spirit that the cast had, and the effort they put forth.
To Be Young, Gifted and Black sent out the message that with determination , anything is possible. Junior Eddie Brown said, "The pfay showed that if you want something in life , you havetogothrough many obstacles , but if you put your mind to it , you can overcome anything. "

A Variety of Afterschool Activities
by Sarah Brennan
Students enjoy many different activities in their time outside of class.
The diversity at Lincoln High can be noticed by looking at the student activities outside of school. Some students spent their free time with family, while others chose to be with friends or by themselves. Activities were extremely varied, from sitting at home watching tv alone to partying with a large group of people. Some students at Lincoln High had jobs, while others placed importance on other things.
Shelly Sasse, a senior at Lincoln High, thoughtthatdancing and partying were a fun part of her weekends. "I'm a teenager. I want to spend time with my friends right now," she said.
Lois Briggs, another senior, set
aside time just for spending with her family. "I think family is the most important thing, because without family, you're nowhere," said Briggs
Even out-of-school sports activities were varied. Dan Fowler, a junior, spent time weightlifting after school. Brad Musick, a senior, was on an indoor soccer team, and also participated in snow skiing.
The variety of interests was obvious when comparing senior activities with sophomore activities. For example, Courtney Baker, a sophomore, liked to go cruising every once in a while with her friends. But it seemed that when senior year came around,
the attitude toward cruising changed. Sasse com ments, "I used to go cruising when I was a sophomore, but now it's just a waste of gas."
Those who had jobs did different things at work. Zach Zeggers worked at Russ's IGA for twenty-five hours each week Dan Fowler worked at Salem Trucking Company durung the weekends, and Shelly Sasse worked at Taco Inn.
Whether it was through spending time with friends, being with family, spending time alone, working or just' hanging out, students at Lincoln High showed their individualism in their free time as well as at school.

The one-act play (a play about inappropriate touching and sexual abuse) required many hours of hard work to make · the play a success. The one-act play involved a small group of students who became hard and fast friends.
Junior Sarah Peters thought it was scary and very difficult to play her part as an abused child. She and senior Adam Dunn spent sometime working out their scene until they felt comfortable with it.
Junior Laura Reznicek, who played an abusive mother , felt it was easier to play the part with the background and knowledge she had from Illusion theatre . "Not
all peop le real ize exactly what ' s going on , or why , and most people don 't want to get involved , either , for fear of causing the child more harm , or the possibility of the parents doing something even more drastic. It doesn 't seem real until you 've seen it , and theatre allows this ," said Reznicek.
The cast received second place in districts , with less than three points keeping them from first place

Lincoln High Students give the right touch through acting.
Illusions Theater
by Erin Hansbrough
"Illusions Theater' ' was a good example of a class that, more often than not, took place outside of the classroom. The group was actually started as a professional theatre company that received a grant from the state of Nebraska so that they could travel with their play The students in the class at Lincoln High worked as a part of the company. The class performed their play, which dealt with sexual abuse, outside of school many times, often at local elementary schools.
To prepare for their roles, the actors spent some time learning about sexual abuse. "To help us help the kids, we've been learning about sexual abuse. We've been bombarded with statistics." said sophomore Sarah Thompson.
"We trained for the actual play for the first three weeks. They (the instructors) were helping us to deal with the topic, making sure we were knowledgable about it," said junior Nate Austin
The actors tried to communicate to their audience what sexual abuse is, how to prevent it, and what to do if it happens. Sarah Peters, a junior, explained,"we're helping them to realize that if they are being touched in a bad way, they should tell someone, they should talk about it." They seemed to get their message across quite well. "We've had a lot of kids come up to us and disclose information, like 'this happened to me'. A lot of kids come up and talk about it," said Peters.
There were many goals within the group, the main one being to
reduce the occurance of sexual abuse. "I think the goal of the group would be to help erradicate sexual abuse. I'd love for that to happen, but I don't see it happening anywhere in the near future, unfortunately," said sophomore Aaron Dupree.
" I want people to be able to alk about sexual abuse that's he only way we're ever going to come close to a solution," explained senior Amber Shavers.
The members of "Illusions heater" reached many goals, whether they dealt with sexual abuse or acheiving new heights as an actor. Teaching others about sexual abuse was a big part of the learning process for the students involved in "Illusions Theater".

Skills for the future
By Stephanie Mahoney r,.
Many classes were offered this year at Lincoln High School which provided students with skills that were designed to help them in their lives outside of the classroom.
Students were able to deviate from the normal schedules of math, English and social studies in order to gain knowledge of more applicable skills such as ~riving, cooking, personal health care and childcare.
Students were able to learn parenting and basic
childcare skills in the •parenting classes offered by the home economics department. Through these classes, students learned about parenting, pregnancy , and self-empowerment issues.
Students were able to gain other basic skills in classes like Child Care Training, Driver Education, and baking. Classes such as these provided students with knowledge and experience that would aid them

Just Do IIIJJ

Moststudentswhenentering high school were not sure of what they really wanted to take. They, however knew of what they did not want to take The core curriculum were the classes that every student had to take in order to graduate from high school. They included but were not limited to English, science, math, and social sciences. You know, those classes that are drilled into you every year followed with the infamous speech about "your future?"
Students were asked what classes they could most do without. They were quick to respond. Sophomore Sarah Thompson said, 11 P.E.! Why should we take time out of our schedule,
for something like that."
School counselor Sue Cain believed that most kids were not bothered by requirements. "Unless they absolutely can not see the reason they have to take a class they could resent it. 11
Students were at times upset with certain requirements. However, many admitted to getting something out of the classes. 11 1 learned a lot in careers class about how to succeed in society today," commented Sophomore Jackie Bratt.
There were health, computer, reading, and in some cases P.E. waivers available for students who felt that they already had the skills those classes would teach. Cain also expressed plans for a reconstruction of the curriculum. This plan would involve modular sched-
uling in which a student demonstrating skill in a compency based class could proceed on to another level.
Student feelings towards requi red classes varied from person to person Senior Michelle Cates had exclamations of joy: 11 1 love C.l. 11
Then there was junior Sarah Peters who lamented 11 T ell me again why I'm taking this class?"
Think about why you took the classes you did this year. You knew you wouldn't like it, and you knew you would never use theorems, and signifigant figures in
life. Perhaps you are like most students , as counselor Ann Brestel commented, you "Just do it. II

Variety found in artistic talents
by Christine Damon and Jaime Stoll
A variety of • classes were offered to provide students with many outlets for artistic expression.
The Lincoln High School Art Department provided students with art supplies and career dreams. Drawing, pottery, painting, and photography were among some of the classes offered this year.
Jon Doyle, a senior, plans on becoming a commercial artist, although he really wants to be a free lance artist, "I got my inspiration from my aunt who is an artist, 11 but says that it is much harder to succeed as a free lance artist than as a commercial artist. Doyle says that free lance artists aren't really creative be-
cause, in order to succeed, they must create what the public wants instead of what they feel.
Matel Loop, a junior, is learning to develop her own style of photography. She found one of the enjoyments of photography to be that you never know what the finished product is going to be until you develop it. She would enjoy a career involving photography, and wildlife photography is her top choice. Loop finds many rewards in photography, and "the best thing (about photography) is other people showing an interest
in your work."
The Lincoln High Art Department can provide a variety of opportunities for Lincoln High Students because of the diverse selection of classes. This opens the doors to those students interested in an art related career.

Stud ents took fore ign language clas ses to bridge the gap between
By Sarah Brennan
Lincoln High is one of the most diverse schools in Lincoln Because there was a wide range of different languages represented, it was important to be aware of the benefits of having foreign language courses at LHS.
Stephanie Brennan , a junior at Lincoln High thought that taking a foreign language was fun. She went to Mexico last summer with Campus Life. She wi ll be going to Mexico again in the summer of '94. She said that Spanish has helped her with the basics.
Brian O ' Neal, a sophomore at Lincoln High, took German. He said, "a foreign language is necessary to get into a good college." O'Neal is hoping to become a
Chemical Engineer.
Ms Robinson , a Chinese teacher at Lincoln High school , commented, "The world is getting smaller. When you know language you shorten the distance between people." She went on to say, "Don'tisolateyourself . Learning a foreign language is an important tool to reach out to people."
Monica Huapaya, a senior this year, was born in Peru and came to the United States when she was fifteen-years-old She speaks Spanish at home , and also knows English. She also took French. A foreign language course was not required in order to graduate this year , but it will be for the class of 1997 Robertson commented,
" The U.S. is the only country that does not require learning other languages."
Bisola Ojikutu , a senior at Lincoln High , was in fourth year French She plans to take F renc ~ in college when she studies Broadcast Journalism Huapaya liked the idea of students learning her native language (Spanish.) " I like people from different parts of the world trying to learn about my language I would like everybody to be this way as well as making a better world."

Variety of Views offered at LHS
By Elizabeth Barajas
Russian History , African-American History , Multicultural Literature , and Women 's Literature were some of the classes offered this year that allowed students to experience a variety of different views and perspectives
ID.J --
"In our society , women are not valued as much as they should be, " commented Ruth Kupfer, who taught Women 's Literature, "this class focuses on novels by women, about women. We explore issues that effect women : Sexual assault, paternity , health issues, and societal roles."
Melissa Steen said that she liked Woman ' s Literature because, being a female, she could relate to the emotions of the characters in the books which they read .
"I like the support in the classes When I read the books, I know that someone feels just like me," commented Junior Katie Ross. These classes have brought a new insight to students seeking a break from the traditional curriculum.
"Students say that they understand women's lives better They have begun to value their experiences more, " commented Kupfer.
Many teachers of different disciplines realized the importance of offering a different perspective. They therefore integrated information viewed from different perspectives into their classes.

Imagine not being able to communicate with those around you. You are unable to tell them your feelings, or even your most basic needs. In their eyes, you have no voice. You may have experienced this feeling for a week or so if you've ever been to a foreign country. Yet , for many Asian English as a Second Language (ESL) students this is an everyday reality. ESL classes taught students who have other first languages to speak and read English. ESL coordinator Hilde Dale said that the goal of the ESL program was to

There were some barriers between American and Asian ESL students, such as language and culture however, many ESL students just wanted to do what most people did: to · meet and have friends. The students were seldom able to 1 experience it for themselves. Senior Phe Bach commented, "It would be nice to have American students come to ESL (classes) so the ESL student can ask questions and talk to them."
More than just language separated Asian ESL students from American students. •"Asian students are taught to respect (the) teacher. The other students talk behind the teacher's back," said Bach. He also commented that Asian students must learn the value of hard work in academic activities. "Asian students don't spend so much tirne with entertainment."
Sophomore Bach Tang is from Vietnam c;ind has been in the U.S. for two years. Tang began learning English in the ESL program at Culler Jr. High School. She thought that Lincoln High School was great: "I love Lincoln High, the people are good."
Tang believed the ESL teachers were very helpful. However, she felt that some of her mainstream teachers needed to talk slower at times. "American teachers can help by being slow, some-

Advanced classes seek diversity.
Classes that Challenge
By Elizabeth Barajas
Lincoln High School prided itself in the diversity among its student body. Different shades of faces were a prominent feature in the halls at LHS. One could see that tensions were low when races freely intermixed in friendship. However, in a school with a high percentage of minority students, few if any of that percentage could be seen in advanced classes
In compiling a list of students in advanced classes, such as American Experience, Diff English 10,
Diff Biology and Diff Western Civilization, the lack of diversity could clearly be seen Some teachers said that they simply did not have any visible minorities in their advanced classes. Sophomore Theresa Spitzer, who was enrolled in several advanced classes, recalled an average of about two minorities in her classes. "I noticed (the lack of minorities) right away. On the first day of class, it was obvious. But, you know I'm used to it. It was no different from
the rest of my advanced classes. " Ms. Goodwin , an African-American English teacher , commen ts , "Kids don't want to be isolated, they want to be with their friends. "
Junior Steve Rich attributed this deficiency to society and the media," Television does not always show good role models for minorities."
Spitzer agreed, "Minorities have it in their minds that they can be satisfied being average. That is all we were thought to aspire to."

Students get hands-on training
By Elizabeth Barajas
Lincoln High School's special education students had a special program giving them a chance to volunteer at places such as Bryan Hospital, UN-L, Centennial Day Care, LPS district offices, and the Nebraska Historical Society
These students were in Lincoln High's transition program. "The program is so that students can begin to break away from high school and get out into the community," commented Cindy Quinn, a teacher who participated in the program.
"What they learn is good work skills. They find out what they like and don't like to do, and vv:.at they are good at," said Quinn.
Students started out in the program doing a half day of work, and a half day of life skills. This way they were gradually introduced to life outside of school. "We learned how to do laundry and take care of pets," said senior Carrie Mays.
By the time the students were seniors, they worked all day long so that they could find paid work upon graduation. Quinn commented on the most important factor of the program, "Our success rate of finding students jobs is great. The background training gets them ready They are graduating with job experience."
Most of the students saw jobs in theirfuture. "I want to get a job at Goodyear ," said Senior Dan Griggs.
Senior Lisa Hobelman commented, "I went for an interview for State Farm , I hope to stay there."
Senior Brandi Havel said that the program taught students to be good listeners, and to have a positive attitude.
"Transition gives the students an opportunity to work." said Quinn.

Success for performing arts
By Elizabeth Barajas
With stage lights, makeup, audiences and reviews, performing arts can be a great deal of fun, and as many performing arts students discovered, it can also be hard work.
Lincoln High's vocal groups were very busy this year. Swing Choir, Soundsation, Sophomore Select, Concert Choir, Mixed and Girls Chorus and Madrigal Singers were some of the groups that contributed to the music department success th is year.

"You have to try out, which includes doing scales, pitch recall, and singing a prepared song," said Fanny Bowley, who was in Sophomore Select Choir.
Chris Lanz was part of the Sounsdsation group and she felt that the concerts at NBC bank and at school were not only a group success, but a personal one as well. "My dad, who works a lot, surprised me by coming to one of our concerts , that was special," said Lanz.
"The Madrigal Feast was a great success," commented Tara Cochrane, "the Feast is a special
concert held at the Corn husker. We worked on songs for the Feast since the beginning of the year. Over 250 people showed up and had a great time."
Lincoln High ' s instrumental groups also had a productive year. • The LHS Marching Band received superior ratings at contests. Prep and Varsity Jazz groups held a memorable concert filled with a diverse mix of mellow music and screaming sounds. In addition, Orchestra and Symphonic band traveled to Kansas City for the Concert Band festival at Worlds of Fun.
Theater classes at Lincoln High gave students an opportunity to develop their acting skills.
The drama department at Lincoln High added to its lists of accomplishments this year with a timely and emotional fall play, 'To Be Young, Gifted and Black. 11
"My role in the play was one of the most memorable things I have done this year," said Laticia Martinez, "it was great fun, and •t had a great message."

A new go lf coach brought improvements in team players and a feeling of team unity.
"I tried to get a renewed team atmosphere and to improve from what they had done in the pastto take them from the bottom to at least the middle where they would have a shot next year for placing on top. They cared for each other and it was important for them to remain a team, " commented Coach John Brady. ''They did really well. Last year it was big to break 500. This year we were going for 400, and at one of the meets we scored our best, a 401. 11
Next year, Junior Jennifer Davis said she thinks they ' re going to make it to state.
"We broke the school record a couple oftimes this year " comments Senior Amy Henderson, "It was a good year (for me) to end with , we were all concerned about how we did." The new coach was more involved in the
team and golf. He was very active in golf as he (Brady) started playing at two years and became serious about it when he was four. He has been playing for 27 years. Brady said that • when he received the chance to coach the team he jumped at it.
"Once , I had a bad week , but Mr. Brady helped convince me I could do it , and it didn 't hurt my season ," states Davis.
Henderson said that she individually placed in many of the different meets this year She said they did better as a team this year than the previous year.
" I wanted them to have fun and they did. Next year when we go on road trips the radio wi ll remain off . No one could agree on a station, " Brady said.
Brady concluded that , " All girls should feel welcome to come out for the team from beginners to experienced players. You don ' t have to be big and strong, you just have to work."

With this year not being quite as exciting as last year regarding the state finals , a lot of team members and students are confident that LHS has a good chance at it next season.
One of the most exciting games this year was the homecoming game against Norfolk. The diversion that tried to get the victory away from us was of course Norfolk but another was the awful weather and the icy rain. It was miserable weather conditions but a glorious win!
Lino Avila, a senior, who played split end, and Romulus Gehle, a senior, who played wing back feel that the best part of playing a game of football is hit-
ting other players, running the ball, scoring and the goal line stance. Ryan Douglas, a junior and quarterback, enjoys the competition, the fans and his love of sports.
This year's starting line consisted of mostly juniors. Next year, the Links will have the experience and have a good chance at a title. Avila and Gehle leave one last remark, "Keep on hittin' it".

iris Gymnastics had a rewarding season for the team of young competitors.
Jennifer Conroy, a top competitor for Lincoln High thought that at clubs there was a lot of pressure to perform well and be on a certain level. In high school you didn't have to do difficult routines and it was more relaxed.
"Most gymnasts belong to clubs where they workout year • round," states coach Dan Kapeller, "this allows them to stay in shape for the start of the season."
Many competitors on the team belonged to additional gymnastic clubs in Lincoln such as Nebraska School of Gymnastics, Capital City Gymnastics, Pioneers, and Ungers School of Gymnastics. Many have competed through these clubs for several years.
"In high school there are
fewer people, so you are able get to know them better," said senior Captain Jennifer Hames, the only returning letter winner this year. "We competed individually but we competed for the team."
Sophomore Karen Stephan thought that the team did good although they were young.
"We are almost at our peek. Our goal for the team was to score 130 points, where each gymnast would have to score an 8.75.
Right now each competitor scores an average of 8.5," stated coach Kapeller.
"I'm not worried about placing, I just do it for fun," stated Sophomore Sara Oberg, another top competitor for Lincoln High "We are hoping we have established a strong team for next year," added Stephan.
"We competed individually but we competed for the team. 11

Boy's Basketball making all the right shots!
Working together is a key part in any team. The Links' Boys' Varsity, Junior Varsity and Reserve teams worked together quite well, and this could have been a big reason for their outstanding season.
The Links' biggest asset was their playing like a team, they didn't rely on one person to score a ll the points. Also, the Links' basketball teams didn't give up
together as a team we can do just that. Abdullah adds as far as the whole team goes, don 't give up on us, we ' re coming along. " I think we ' re a good team , if we put it all together and play hard

part of playing a game of basketball is the competitiveness.
Outside shooting , team speed , and "the big men down low" , which means the other players down the court. Those are the team strengths.
On a closing note, Abdullah adds " If you have more heart that the other player, you ' ll always be successful!"

A cut ·above the rest!
The 1994 wrestling season contained many firsts for the members of the Lincoln High team. Bob Orta became the team's new coach this year, and the wrestlers were pleased about this. Junior Jeremy Cummings said that one of the best things about being on the team was ''having a new coachour coach is dedicated for us to win."
The team itself also had many new members, resulting in varied styles of wrestling. But even with a new team, there was still room for ·tradition. "I guess my favorite tradition is wrestling with the coaches and beating them," said Cummings.
Sophomore Cory Lyons enjoyed hearing stories of years past from older team members. 'There's not a lot of seniors on the team this year the seniorswhoareontheteam nowtell us stories about other years.' ;
Many wrestlers also came away from the season with valuable personal memories. Sophomore Brian Cheney remembered, 'When I was wrestling against Southeast...! have asthma, and I had an asthma attack in that match, but I still ended up sticking the kid."
Senior Tony Casella enjoyed the Creighton Prep invitation~!. "I took first there, and I beat a kid from Southeast that beat me already once."
The meets themselves were very emotional and energy-charged events for the members of the team. 'When I'm out on the mat, I want to feel confidant that I can win I feel nervous a lot, too, though," said Senior Brent r• Holliday.
Chaney said he usually felt, ''very emotional. You can take things out on people take your frustrations out."
"All I feel is like an adrenaline rush," said Casella. 'There ain't no feelings, except for a dislike for the kid you're wrestling. If I hurt him, oh well.''
One thing that the team members agreed on was the focus on the individual wrestler during a match. "It's a reallyindMdualizedsport,"saidHolliday. "If you lose, you can't blame it on the team. If you mess around in practice, you don't do well on the mat."
Lyons agreed,"lf you lose, it's your fault. lfyouwin, nooneelsecantakethe credit."

Have you everwantedto knowhow the Links got their name? Well, at the Lincoln High School swim meet against Beatrice, the answer was perfectly clear. The crowd and the swimmers really came together and showed their team spirit by cheering their team on.
Coach Richard Conradt closely observed the unique, but traditional preswim ritual, of taking a canteen of Lincoln High pool water and pouring it over the heads of the LHS swimmers and divers for good luck.
The LHSswimteam had more than enough people to help them on their way to more exciting victories. The team consisted of about forty swimmers, twenty-five girls and fifteen boys. The swimmers were split into two different groups, the red group which was the more experienced swimmers and the black group which was the less experienced swimmers The black team practiced from 3:30 until 4:45 while the red group stretched. Then
they rotated and the red swam until 6:00.
State was a very exciting and busy time for several LHS swimmers this year. The boys with their undefeated record of 6-0 had a couple of very lucky guysgoing. JevonBoardman, ajunior, qualified for state in the 500 free style with a time of 5:11 :07 at the meet against Beatrice. Jason Sawatzki accompanied by Boardman at the state meet along with Dave Foster, a junior who has been swimming since he was eight years old and had currently broken the 100 meter backstroke and the 100 meter butterfly record. "It feels pretty good although it's kind of weird breaking recordsagainstpeopleyou've known a long time. " said Foster
Missy Steen, Sarah Carpenter, Laura Scott, and Jenny Schultz were going to state with their ever most swift relays. Sophomore Jenny Schultz has been swimming for about five years, but has only been on the LHS swim
team fortwoyears. She swims the 200 freeandthe500free. Attheswimmeet against Beatrice , she took first in the freestyle with a time of 2:23 and in the 500 free she came in first with a time of 6:27:09.
The diving team did an exceptional job in their meets considering they only had three people, senior Chad Olberding, junior Jennica Peterson, and freshman Tiffany. The divers seemed to be handling themselves very well. Olberding had been on the LHS diving team for three years. He was the only male on the team along with two other girls, but that was not the reason he was expected to work so hard. Since he has been on the team for three years his coach expected him to do better than the other divers. The diving team says they do not have a different ritual than the swimmers because they are all one big team not two separate teams.
