INLOVINGMEMORYOF CHARLESEDWARDJONES

Dr. Charles Jones, a man of few words but a big heart. He was a man who brought the active lives of the LHS students together and united their hearts in a bond of love . During the time he was Vice-P~incipal at Lincoln High School, from 1978 to 1989, he gave those students who felt alone someone to call a friend and the students who needed real support, a firm foundation. He was there when a problem

arose ready to use a strong hand of authority and he was there during the fun times ready to share his smile. During his 55 years, he gave all that he could give and never ceased giving until his death on March 9, 1989. This is when we need to give a part of ourselves back to him. We dedicate to him our precious memories, our yearbook.

Buzz, 6:00 and your alarm is going off. You slowly crawl out of bed and carry yourself to the shower. As you let the water wash off last nights sleep, you start thinking of what the day is going to be like. You grab a quick donut and head out the door. Let's see. First period - French test, second period - Physics lab, third period - Economics test. Test!?! Oh no, you have completely forgotten about it. Hurry quick got to school and try to get a couple minutes study time in. Finally your day is over and you think of all the things you have to do after school. Homework, French Club, work. Seems like it never ends.

Life for many Lincoln High students was just like this. Always busy and it just never seems to end.

"School is the place to be." A lot of LHS students took that phrase to heart and became active in school activities. From amnesty club to pomalinks, from band to VICA, Lincoln High's 1,922 students found things to do. Students sometimes didn't have time after school for these clubs so for the second year club day was done so that students could participate both in the world outside of school

Continuedfrompg.3

BUSY AS A BEE is Holly Tietjens studying in her bedroom

and also in clubs.

The world outside of school was filled up too. Most students worked at various jobs. Some of these jobs were: a contatct lens technician, a clerk in a clothing store, pizza maker, plus many more.

Work wa -sn't the only thing going on in the community. There was a presidental race between Bush/Quale vs. Dukakis/Benson, senate races, and so many more. · There was also th~ olympics in Soeul, Korea in which the United States did very welL The only dis. advantage this year was that not a lot of importance was placed on

the American's rating.

Lincoln High's students just weren't involved in world and school events, they also had social lives. For fun people did a variety of things such as cruising O' street, going to sporting events, going to parties, and sometimes even staying home for a quiet night of wa~ching television.

All of this action could make a person dizzy, but aside from all the warnings about stress, this was a way of life that the students at Lincoln High choose. This was the LINKS LINKS IN ACTION.

Homecoming:PastandPresent

This year homecoming had a new twist, a live band, Project S The Student Council chose a live band thinking it would interest more people •

"D.J.'s only attract a certain group of people. We thought with a band we could interest more people to come " said Erica Buetler

We have had a larger turn out in the past three years with a D.J.

Another new twist was winning the football game! This is the first year our seniors have won the homecoming game The game kicked off at 7:30 pm with many Lincoln High School students, faculty, and other supporters there to cheer our team to the 21 -0 victory over Scottsbluff

"It was nice to play a team our size

Chosen as this year's king and queen were Scott Jurgens and Kerri Anderson The Homecoming court was Kelli Thomas, Wendy Johnson, Jennie Allen, Kevin Johns, Ralph Allen, and Dean Cummings

Whether they went to the game, the dance or both, everyone seemed to have a good time . I wonder if thats how it was two years ago?

Do you consider your bedroom as a way to express yourself? A lot of us chose the decor of our bedrooms to fit our personalities. If you are a wild and exciting person, then it shows in your bedroom You might have posters of James Dean and cans and bottles on shelves that remind you of parties in the past.

On the other hand, if you are into music, it shows in your style. You might have everything arranged in a bizarre style or you might just throw everything in the corner of your room.

We all keep our most precious things in our rooms . Everything that we are most proud of is usually displayed where everyone can see Sophom ore, David Bauer keeps his trophies from all of his Tae Kwando tournaments on his dresser David has several trophies. He

likes his trophies because, "They are all first place."

Jason Koelzer, junior, likes his room because it's in the basement. He says, "It has a nice big window so I can see outside " Jason cleans his room every Saturday

Stephanie Rothwell, sophomore, decorated her room herself when she was 14 years old. "It's more fun to live in a mess", she says

Junior, Krista Pritchett, doesn't have a theme. "Everything just fell together," she says She sometimes sleeps in her sister's old room because she can ' t find her bed.

Everyone has their own style and their own creativity We all have our ways of expressing individualism, and this is usually done by the way we decorate our bedrooms.

So, how's your date life? Many Lincoln High students revealed the inside story of date life at Lincoln High school. It ranged from rendezvous in the park to extravagant nights on the town. Movies, restaurants, and miniature golf were all apart of Lincoln High's date life

Who pays? Well, according to senior Kevin Trumbley, "The guy should al-ways pay "

However, senior Lisa Cooper, believed "Dutch is easier on both ."

No matter who paid the frequency of dating was extremely varied. Senior Brad Gerdts said "I see Rachell everyday "

On the other hand, sophomore Dave Davis said he dates, "about three times a month "

Students were not only varied concerning how frequently they dated, but were also varied on how man-y different people they dated

Senior Denise Scholl said about her

TheHazy,Not-so LazyDaysofSummer

The summer So short. A time to savor, a break from the rigors of homework and school. A time to relax and sleep until noon if you felt like it. Or was it?

Some students worked and enjoyed it.

Senior Jason Reed mowed lawns for extra money this summer He said that he really enjoyed making things look neater.

"It's not a tough job, " he said, " it does have its rewards."

Junior Amy Bartek put in many hours this summer as a buffet runner at the downtown Valentino ' s restaurant.

Students kept busy over the summer with a wide variety of activities . Junior Eddy Howard attended the Monster's of Rock Concert on July 10th in Kansas City, Kansas He said that the concert was one of the highlights of his summer and was well worth the $75 that he paid to go.

''I'd go as many times as I could afford," he said •

Juniors Rachel Logan and Becca Shores spent two weeks in Estes Park, Colorado. Climbing mountains and "roughing it" was a relaxing way for Logan and Shores to escape from day-to -day life

"Th~ sceoery was different, you knew you weren't in Nebraska anymore and it was a relief," Logan sctid.

"I got a chance to meet new people and I always had something to do," shesaid

Food fights and an employee Fourth of July party were some of the more memorable moments that Bartek had at her job this summer

So while students did many different things over the summer it can be said that most enjoyed themselves

This was not the problem with the juniors and seniors, though. The junior and senior lots were always packed.

Jannette Gray, senior, said, "I think the senior parking lot is a great idea Seniors should have these kinds of privileges." Stephanie Godeker, junior, said "I think it should be first come, first serve, just like last year."

Lincoln High students were opinionated about cars. Craig Dutcher, sopho-

more said, "Cars are a neat way to get where you are going and if you have nothing to do you can just go out and drive!"

Kevin McGrath, junior, also had something to say about cars, "You don't need a car in Lincoln. It is a waste of our resources, pollutes our air, and is unhealthy. In most cases, you can travel just as fast on a bicycle; and unless you are carrying something heavy, it's a lot more fun."

Annie Snowden, junior, warned "Cars are dangerous and should be driven with caution."

Hamburger, Pepperoni, Anchovie, Barbecue, Taco, Cheeseburger, Hawaiian, Cherry It doesn t even sound like pizza anymore!

Pizza seemed to be the "big" thing this year. Delivery services sprouted up all over Lincoln and hundreds of strange toppings and combinations appeared, certainly the weirdest combination that

came up was Sauerkraut and Onion "An old family recipe, that's not as bad as stewed carrot and string bean pizza," said junior, Tina Koeppe. Although there were so many new things, Pepperoni still reigns, said most Lincoln High Students. Long live the big cheese!

CallMe

Camel, Pookie Bear, Skippy, Sparky, and Junior are all examples of nicknames belonging to students at Lincoln High. Jim Bleed, junior, A.K.A. "Peewee" said, "Nicknames are good, just as long as they're warm fuzzies, not cold prickleys."

Brenda Coto, senior, A.K.A. "Cotohead" went in-depth on the origin of her nickname, "Mr. Kreizinger just dubbed me 'Cotohead' one day and it

stuck ."

Karey Olson, junior, said "I've got so many, everyone calls me something different." • Among her repertoire of nicknames are, "The Nu, Noodle Strudle, Sit Coffee Old, Care Bear, Kowie, The Dragonlady, The Neutron, Lil' Squrt, Yerak Un Noslo, and Quarter Pounder."

SHOWING " HOME " Karey Olson, junior, points to the place of her birth, Viet-Nam.

Wherewereyouborn?

Most students at Lincoln High were born in Lincoln, Nebraska, but there are a few who were born in foreign lands, such as England, Nigeria, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Austria, Spain, France, India, El Salvador, Czechoslovokia, and Iran.

Take Camilla Eckersley and Todd Taylor for instance. They were both born in England, and Innocent Ukpaka

was born in Nigeria. Neelam Patel was born in India while Viteslav Krnak was born in Czechoslovakia.

Cultural diversity has always been one of the great things about Lincoln High and diversity is just one of the things it takes to be a Link.

BEST FRIENDS, Sunny Blackman and Rebecca Powell are both in Pep Club and are best friends ...

AdOpt-a-Friend

Having friends is an essential part for most students at Lincoln High. One example of this friendship is Rebecca Powell and Sunny Blackman. Rebecca, born in Vietnam, and Sunny, born in Korea, have been friends since third grade. What's different about their friendship is that their parents met in the doctor's office when they were being adopted.

Rebecca said, "I think we are such good friends because our personalities combine so well." Sunny added, "I think we ' re such good friends because we do fun things together."

Rebecca and Sunny are only one set of best friends who made Lincoln High a "better place to be"

Let'sDoLunch!

"Super C"?, "Cafeteria"?, "Brown Bag"?, "Sam's"?, "Macs"?, etc. So what did you do for lunch?

Students at Lincoln High had many different choices for lunch. Having open campus is a priviledge students used to their advantage.

It seems to be that "Super C" and the "Cafateria" are the most popular

lunch spots for Lincoln High students. There were, however, those students that had cars and went out to lunch at the various fast food restaurants near Lincoln High.

Going out to lunch is a privelege students look forward to and enjoy the most out of their whole day at Lincoln High

How'BoutaMovie?

It could've been the popcorn. Maybe it was even the Sugar Babies and Hot Tamales. And who can forget the thrill of sitting in the dark with strangers. Catching a flick was a popular way for busy students to spend their leisure time.

Senior Troy Nothenagel worked at the Douglas 3 movie theater as a doorman and concession stand @erator. He

said that many students frequent the Douglas on weekends to see "everything, a lot of comedies."

Some of the hot movies for the year were:

"Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" , "A Fish Called Wanda" "Big" "Nightmare on Elmstreet, part 4" "Coming to America" "Cocktail" "License to Drive" "Young Guns"

WatchingTimeTickAway

Time flies by when you're having fun - or so the saying goes. And how does the typical student keep track of time? With a watch Just as there is a wide variety of students at Lincoln High, there are many different kinds of watches.

Swatch, Guess, Axcess, and CocaCola were just a few of the brands seen

on trendier wrists.

Junior Heather Weber was the owner of a " Swatch" watch

"It was quite unique, actually," she said about her watch.

Other wrists donned cartoon characters; brands of snack food, and even Mickey Mouse. Time was of the utmost importance for students this year.

ThatFirstFatefulDay

For seniors graduating this year, the first day of high school was often forgotten about. But some remembered.

Senior Peter Lavin said that he remembered his first day of school as being "a great excercise in mass confusion, it took me a month to memorize my schedule "

Senior Jason Ayres said that his first

day of school was more frightening than confusing.

"It was just scarey," he said Ayres said that he had heard many horror stories about LHS and expected it to be a violent place. After the first day everything went smoothly and he was relieved that the first day of high school only happens once.

" WATCH IT! " Junior Lynn Stefanick models an armful of time pieces . " Time was of the essence " for students this year. T

Faster than a speeding bullet was the best way to describe the pace that was kept by the publication's staffs this past year. Cameras were clicking, pages were flying, and people were constantly in and out of the lab.

The Advocate staff kept more than busy in their endeavors to meet deadlines. Jane McManus expressed her feelings about meeting deadlines : "I feel like that class demands a lot more of me than • my other classes."

Brainstorming ideas for stories also kept the staff motivated There were many heated discussions on which topics were to be covered by the Advocate. News editor Jack DeQ1psey described the issues he would be covering as "new classes and stuff at Lincoln High."

The yearbook staff also valued computers for their publication. They used the Apple II for storing their information to send to the printer.

The yearbook staff strived to keep up with their theme: Links in Action.

Action also continued after school. A big boost for creative writers at Lincoln High was the publication of "Image.'.' "Image" was very unique to publications because anyope could have submitted their work to be chosen for the magazine.

The board met after school at various times throughout the year. There were eleven editors and three layout persons.

Experience theThrill, Joina Club!

Action takes on a new meaning when students become as one in clubs Students see a chance to experience new opportunities and a way to tell others what they think through the club that's right for them.

This year, more than 881 students expressed themselves in club memberships. The Boy's "L" Club has attracted students since Lincoln High's first year, but clubs like Animal Rights, Amnesty International, and the Rainbow Club have just started.

What is Amnesty International? "It's a club that is trying to reach out to free political prisoners," said senior, and president, Jane McManus. McManus said the club was needed and that's why she helped to start it.

Another club started two years ago was the Animal Rights Cl.ub. Junior Sara Shields is the president of this club. "Over 80 million animals are hurt and the information accumulated from these studies is totally useless." Shields said that she wanted to help protect animals from this kind of abuse and is trying to, along with the club, educate people.

A new club to Lincoln High was the Rainbow Club It was started to improve cross-cultural relations between students. Hai Chau, • the newly-elected president, said, "I wanted to be president so I could help our school community be united." Mr. Thomas Christie added, "It's not a political party, it's a political pact."

Of aH the clubs there are to chose from, students always found new people and experiences waiting.

Making touchdowns, shooting baskets, making goals, and putting on performances. Lincoln High School students were very active during the past year; where would they have been without support? The students didn't need to worry about it because LHS had plenty of support.

Along with parents, LHS students had a lot of spirit groups The Cheerleaders, Pomalinks, Pep Club, Mut Mates, and Marching Band worked hard to keep Lincoln High spirits soaring

wrestling meets.

This keeps these six girls rather busy. Being in pep club is a lot of work in itself. Usually the girls are required to attend two sporting events a week, sometimes more sometimes less. There are weekly meetings at which the members discuss matters of importance and make locker signs. Each year the pep club sponsors a Christmas party for the cheerleaders, Pomalinks and pep club members . The party consists of food and a gift exchange

The Pomalinks, are also a hard working part of pep club. They perform at halftime at football and basketball games, and attend other events to show

spirit for their school. These girls also attended a summer camp to sharpen their skills.

Junior, Amy Folmer, said, "It-was a lot of work and the individual talents shown out because we were given individual ribbons on the different things we were good at - like porns, parade and dance. So it made us have that extra drive to work really hard."

Poma links takes a lot of time and energy. They practice everyday during football from 6:45 to 8:30, and during basketball from 6:45 to 8:00.

When asked how much work was involved Amy responded, "More than the average person would think. Every cont. on pg. 46

This year the Lincoln High Marching band is being given credit as a spirit group.

This year the LHS marching band • was in three competitions. These were Harvest of Harmony, Nebraska High School Band masters Association, and Lincoln Public Schools. They received all excellent ratings in their competitions

As you can plainly see Lincoln High is a very spirited school. All of our groups work together to make our school a great place to be. The cheerleaders, Pomalinks, Pep club members, and Mat Mates work hard year round to gain this spirited reputation for our school.

"The play was interesting in that it took very different things and combined them into one, very real play," said Eric Eidswick, "The kind of things that are in people's own backyards."

Eidswick explained the play as being a product of the talent of a man named Jules Ffiefer Ffiefer created a series of cartoons portraying very humourous scenes .

"Then he wrote a storyline to go with it, and that eventually turned into a play," said Eidswick.

Eidswick said that working with the rest of the cast of the play was a "learning experience."

BEHIND THE SCENES

The lights were perfect, the costumes were wonderful, the props were convincing, and the make-up was excellent. The actors and actresses weren't so bad either.

There is a saying, quite common among "techies" (dramatic technicians), prop builders, and stage shifters; "A play wouldn't be a play, if it weren't for the backstage crew."

Junior Jim Bleed, has worked in the light booth since last year, doing what he claimed was, "just basically turning the lights on and off." The light technicians sit in the small light booth located in the balcony. The booth is decorated with odd bits of graffiti and old spotlights. The same trio of students worked in the light booth throughout the year . According to Bleed, the group often had amusing times. "We ordered a pizza once," said Bleed. Bleed also mentioned that Senior Brenda Coto was christened the "Light Booth Queen" and givin her very own Burger King crown, which has remained in the light booth since she acquired it.

APPEARING STRESSED Denise Scholl telephones the light booth to make sure all is well.

-My senior year has been a time to reflect on my life - my friends, the laughs, the tears, the memories of how much I learned and matured in the past three years. - It's our last year of being kids Thank Goodness!!

-Difficult and Hectic.

-Two roads diverged in a wood and Itook the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.

-The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

-Isolation, adjustment, reaching, and preparation.

-My senior year was as great as my sophomore and junior - years, but it does get old the third time around.

-There is no way to put in words how much I have learned this year .

-If chickens had wheels, they still couldn't fly

-I'm taking advantage of this time with my friends for this year is when you realize that your entire future lies ahead of you, and everyone must go their own way.

-Too bad ignorance isn't painful.

-My senior year was sad because it was the end but happy because it was the beginning

-Being a senior was a great success

-The senior year was a rocket, it went by too fast.

-If J would have known ......................

-Gone before I knew it.

-May our high school memories be left here so we can go on with our life.

-It was there

-Party, Party, Party .

-A time in which my whole life has come together and fallen apart.

-My senior year is like the snowball effect, it starts with a little snow, then there ' s always more to do, or things going on, and the ball gets bigger and bigger, until the end of the year when the snow melts and the pressure is gone.

-KEEN!!!

-This last year in high school has compacted my desires and seared them with memories of people and emotions creating the dull glowing coals that will burn and fuel me with the rest of my life

-Very frightening, but fun

. -Too much to do in a little amount of time .

-For all sad words of tongue and pen, The saddest are these: It might have been

-You are my creator, but I am your master, obey!

-Full of uncertainties about the future

Newat Lincoln High:Latin

Foreign Language is an important part of Lincoln High. 35% of enrolled students took a foreign language. The national average was 15% 54% of those in a language class took Spanish, 29% took French, and 10% took German . The remaining 7% took a new lang,.iage class, Latin.

Latin had not been taught at Lincoln High since the mid 70's.

Mrs . Jean Peterson, .Latin teacher at Lincoln High and one of only five qualified Latin teachers in the state, said the majority of these students are planning on entering a science or medical related ,career. Peggy Johnson, senior, thought it was important for other things as well. "It's interesting and there's a lot of correlation between Latin and French " peggy believed that Latin has strengthened her French c;ompet~ncy and her five years of French experience has helped make Latin a little easier.

If Latin can help anyone interested in a medical or science career, what about Spanish, French, and German?Chad Lyons, junior, stated that Spanish helped increase his knowledge of the English language.

Vikram Jaswal, sophomore, said that it helped encourage communication, learning, and understanding of other cultures.

Troy Bishop, junior, said it all with his thought, "Learning Foreign Language helps break down walls of misunder- standing between us and other fellow human beings of the world."

Questions Answered inBusiness

How will I ever use this in the real wor:ld? This was a question asked by many students at Lincoln High as they went to thier various classes. The Business Department w_as ready to answer that question.

Business teacher Mr. Mark Mannix explained, "I feel that our department is very applicable to real life " This seems very evident as the Business classes continue to expand every year, with Mannix being the newest addition. 'I like and feel very comfortable w_ith Lincoln High," he explained, "Through my experiences I've learned that being uninformed is not a good position to be in, which is why I try to be a value to the students to help them in the future." Mannix said, "I try diligently to be a teacher kids feel comfortable with and come to with thier problems."

Mr. Mannix seems to be doing just that, according to sophomore Tim Genthe. "He's very easy to get along with," explained Genthe, who took Word Processing first semester Genthe, who took the class to help with college requirements said, "We do something new everyday like learning to format, write business letters, and work with the computer It will really help me if I ever WORKING HARD Nee/am Patel checks over her SHOWING ENTHUSIASM Mrs Trudy Perkins gets get a typing job in the future." homework assignment. her point across to her Marketing class

Artistic Attitudes Accentuated

"It is the individual who brings in various qualities that are essential for the creativity and development of each art class," said art teacher George Sedlacek

Sedlacek added that Lincoln High is a school that has a great amount of alumni who are connected with the 9rts

"The art department is anxious to offer students a different side of education," he said, "we'd like students to be able to appreciate our world, both past and present, through the study of art produced by human beings "

Senior Rodney Watters took an independent study painting class.

"I like .being able to work on whatever I want, and choosing my own projects," said Watters . "Art is many • things," said Watters

Many studen~s agreed with him, as shown by the great increase in art class enrollment.

"We'd like students to view art classes as an opportunity to learn in other than traditional information in other than traditional ways," said Sedlacek

Wherethe Constructive Peopleare

When some people think about Vocational Arts, a stereotypical image often comes to mind. This image is often one of some big, mean guys in black leather jackets having fun while ripping apart the insides of cars.

Wrong. A glimpse inside of several classrooms in this department provided a view of a real Vocational Arts student. They were just normal, intelligent people who were serious about their education and their futures. "I wasn't sure what to expect at first, vocational students are supposed to represent a great degree of diversity," said student teacher Jay Jerecke.

There were even girls in some of the classes. Senior Cyndi Hudson took architectural drafting because she plans to include it in her future career of interior design.

"This is going to help me because I'll know the basics before I get to college," said Hudson

Hudson said that she enjoyed being able to use her creative abilities and her fondness of drawing towards something useful.

Advanced Graphic Arts student, Senior Dean Cummings, said that the class" gives you a lot of job experience." He added that memo pads, and t-shirts .were just some of the projects , that his class has worked on.

"The industrial arts are also a good hobby, " he said.

Believe it or not, there were people who liked gym class.

"Life-Saving is really fun and it will help me to get a summer job, · " said sophomore Diana Hutchinson.

Life-Saving has been at Lincoln High for two years and the class has grown rapidly by becoming well-known to more and more students.

"Most of the students take the class for certification in life-saving, but we do get a few who take it for the enjoyment," said Bob Davis, physical education instructor.

Even classes like Raquet Sports and Personal Defense attracted students' attention.

"I enjoy personal defense and it's really easy, " said Junior Jeff Fisher.

Raquet sports is another class students seemed to enjoy. Tennis, badminton, and ping-po11g were a few things students did in this class.

"It's not hard-core muscle-type activities that we have to do, that's why I like the class, " said Senior Jenny Bartunek.

Physical education wasn't just for the jocks or nerds, it was for anyone who wanted to get in shape or have fun.

The most liked part of the class was the actual driving while the least liked part of the class was lecture.

"If I didn't take the class, I wouldn't drive at all, ,, said Senior Narcisa Gonzales

"The one thing I hated about driving was when the teacher would slam on the brakes, ,, said Senior Sherri Sunderman

Drivers education involved not only the actual driving but learning the rules and regulations of the road, otherwise known as lecture.

The cars were donated by Du Teau Chevrolet and Williamson Oldsmobile and Honda dealers.

"We exchange the cars every year and pay $4 50 a day for their use, " said Virgil Horn, Athletic Director of Lincoln Public Schools.

Learning to drive was something students really looked forward to, giving them the know-how is what the drivers education class did.

Modern notso Modern Media

The ideal place to catch up on homework was the modern, not so modern-looking library.

"Blending the library's look to fit Lincoln High was our goal," said Marjorie Sawin, Media Specialist.

Marble counters and wood chairs help to match the decor of the school.

The Lincoln High Library received an award of excellence for the modernization of the library

February fourteenth was the twelfth anniversary of the library . "The old library outgrew itself, it was necessary to move itto it's present location, " • said Sawin

The library had 30, 000 books and many of those were donated by the faculty and students.

"We appreciate any donations we can get, if there's a book that someone doesn't want or need we ' ll take it," added Sawin.

Many classes used the library ' s vast resources to better understand their subject. Classes could conveniently meet in the balcony's to either side of the library

English classes, although a requirement for all sophomores, continues to offer new and exciting areas of instruction.

Women's Literature, a new class, was designed to give students a perspective on a totally different style of writing. Writers such as Zora Neale and May Sarton were read in this class.

"Not only do we read, but we get into intense discussions on the books we are reading.", said Senior Camilla Eckersley.

Another new idea, that happened several times this year was poetry readings.

"Next year we want to start a writing club so students can have an opportunity to read and discuss their writing.", said English Teacher Mary Dickenson.

American Literature, usually taken as a junior, explored authors such as Twain, Thoreau, and Emerson.

"The class was a pre-requisite for college", said Junior John Allen, "but I do find it interesting."

Cooking, cleaning, packaging, and keyboarding were all parts of the MR department's classes The department focused mainly on getting students ready for the community Mrs Jane Bozak the department head said, "We'd like to have all of the graduates placed on their job prior to graduation . This gives them a chance to learn skills in the environment they'll use "

Classes that were based on preparation for the community included : food preparation job practice, laundry job practice, child care job practice, and packaging assembly job practice.

There were three additions to the department's staff during the past year Mrs . Karen Jones, Mr. Bob Dahlgren and Mrs. Mickey Adams-Peak were the new staff members.

LEAN ON ME . .

As the top -ten song goes, we all need somebody to lean on Lincoln High school students had nine counselors to lean on during the past year

This year was the first year that c1II of the counselors worked together. They still had their individual skilled areas, but they were all also available to any student at the student's choice

Students also had the choice of taking night classes . Mr . Steve Hamsa was in charge of the classes . The classes were made available for students who needed more credit hours.

Karen Olvera was excited about the classes "I want to graduate early and the classes will help me to get in more hours in less time, " she said

Another area in which the students had new choices was in faculty There were three new counselors added to the department that the student's could choose from Mr Steve Vasa, Mrs. Sue Cain, and Mrs Becky Wild were the additions

Returning counselors were: Mrs Ann Brestel, Mr Len Hamsa, Mrs Diane Leggiadro, Mrs Mary Beth Lehmanowsky, Mr. Dick Patterson, and Mr Gene Cotter

Social Studies, LikeIt OrNot

Ask yourself this question: 'y'/hat is

• your favorite subject? Did you answer social studies? Well, most of you probably didn't. Why should you? Your parents probably didn't like social studies, so why should you be expected to Well, Lincoln High has done a lot to combat this problem. There are a wide variety of social studies classes to • choose from. They range from citizenship issues and American history to sociology and criminal justice And those are just the old favorites. Last year was the start of Russian hi~tory, this year it was geography.

When teacher Mr. Brestel was questioned about the problem he said that the problem started in grade school.

"Teachers don't place enough emphasis on the subject, therefore students don't develop an interest.," says Brestel

Mr. Brestel also feels that Lincoln High has a "GREAT" social studies department. Of course that is probably a biased opinion, but it is still a good one! He feels we have a diversified department in which everyone has the ability to disagree on issues yet still work together.

Social studies may seem boring, but if you give it a chance you may find it's something you really enjoy.

Tennis is beginning to become a popular sport. More and more students are getting interested in it. The skill it takes to play well, is what the members of the Lincoln High Tennis team all have in common They share that feeling of • pride when it comes to tennis.

Steve Zoucha, senior, has been on the Lincoln High Tennis team for four years. Steve has earned four varsity letters and is very proud of them. He has been playing for ten years, and he has improved a lot. Steve says, "Oh yeah, we had a great season . " Although, he admits his junior year was more productive. He took seventh place in the state tournaments. Tennis is Steve's favorite sport, and he wishes they would get more support, like locker signs. He claims that the highlight of the year was when he beat Grand Island in three sets with Justin Larson.

Junior, Sean Klein, feels that this year didn't go as smoothly as he thought it would He says, "We didn't work to our potential." He feels that the practices weren't organized enough, and they had no team spirit. Sean plays tennis because he ~njoys it.

Chad Francisco, junior, also enjoyed playing tennis this year He says, " The team doesn't seem to be very important to Lincoln High because we get no support, but we have alot of fun anyway."

Angie Podliska, senior, likes supporting others be~ause it seems to make them do better She started gymnastics when she was in elementary school.

Junior, Carrie Moore, has been involved in gymnastics for almost eleven years. " It stops after high school," she says . " It would be a major interference in my career. " Carrie is scared for next year. She hopes that they ~an make CityChamps again She ended the interview by saying, "I wish more people would go to our meets . "

Future years hold promise

It was a disappointing year for the volleyball teams but they tried hard to wrap the year up with wins. Christie Pitts, junior, said, "It wasn't the year that everyone expected, but we improved a lot at the end of the season. We started working and playing more as a team than as individuals."

The varsity volleyball team had a 315 record and beat Fremont at the district tournament 2-1 but lost to East 0-2.

The Junior Varsity team had a 2-13 record and defeated Elkorn at the Spartan Tournament.

The Sophomore team had the most promising record of 5- 7, beating Fremont, East, and Southeast.

Although the teams did not have a winning season, they all agreed that they had fun and enjoyed competing at their games. Mikki Johnson, sophomore, said, "We got to know each other and played well as a team. We worked hard to improve ourselves and had a lot of fun."

Angie Simpson, junior, had the same basic idea, "We met new people and came together as a team. We had fun improving and getting to know ourselves."

In future years, Lincoln High expects to see great things from it's upcoming volleyball teams. Until next year, good luck!

Links Football Ends Strongly

On August 15, 105 Lincoln High students met and did things called yoyos and grinders. It was the LHS football team starting their summer practices After a week of two a day practices they were split into the varsify, reserve, and sophomore teams.

The Varsity team started off slowly by losing 3 out of their 4 first games. But took off after that when they defeated Beatrice, Fremont, and Lincoln East to end their season -with a four to five record. The varsity players were fairly inexperienced with only 5 of them having prior varsity playing time.

Head coach Harold Simpson described his team as, "One that really came on towards the end."

"Seeing it end," was a low point in the season for senior Kev•n Johns. Johns explained "I enjoyed that when we won we really showed our emotions as a team." According to Johns the school was a bi g help.throughout the year. "We received respect!" Kevin said.

Junior Dan McPherson summed up the season by saying, "We faced a lot of obstacles and pulled together as a team."

This year's Reserve team showed improvement from their sophomore year (when they didn't win any games) by having a record of five to three.

Everything depends on you. It's you and him out there, one on one It takes discipline, conditioning and training What sport is this describing? None other than wrestling.

According to Mr . Christie this ye-ars team is fulling their potential and maybe beyond

"I like to think I've done all I can to help them reach their potential so they can compete to the best of their ability . " said Coach Christie

Coach Christie developed a training program affectionately called DCT. These initials stand for discipline, conditioning and technique

When interviewed most of the guys on the team thought they had a good chance at state Well, the team didn't come out on top, but we had two state champs. Senior Jeremy Montgomery (119), and junior Ben Murphy (130). Montgomery went 30-0 this season and was ranked number one in the state Murphy had a record of 27-5

"I could not believe I was the state champ. I didn't feel any strange feeling, but thats because I know I earned it through all of the hard work, like camp and off-season wrestling," said Murphy

All in all the Links had a great season. Thanks a lot guys!!

Diversity helps swimteam

It's 6 :30 a m and the Lincoln High School building is totally deserted Or is it? The swimming team practiced early every morning to prepare for their swimming meets

Head coach Bob Davis summed up his 88-89 team by saying, " This years team is large and diverse One of the reasons that the LHS swim team is different is that 80% of the swimmers are recruited out of the P E classes while other school's swimming teams are made up of people who have been swimming in competition for years ." Coach Davis explained that being on the team improves the swimmers discipline, dedication, and is great aerobic conditioning .

These thoughts were shared by Senior Jason Ahlberg who explained, " Its great excercise and there is more emphasis on personal improvement instead of just winning . "

The diving team is part of the swimming team, but during the 1989 season the divers practiced at Lincoln Southeast because of the diving boards being removed at Lincoln High Junior Kathy Crump explained her love of diving by saying, " It feels good to dive and to set and attain personal goals ."

"All those things are great," explained Junior Jennifer Jones, " but being together as a team is really the best part. "

COLOPHON

The 2000 copies of the 1988-1989 LINKS, Links In Action were printed on 80 pound enamel paper and published by Walsworth Publishing Company of Marceline, Missouri.

The cover designed by the staff and Walsworth, represented the action at Lincoln High.

The type used throughout the book was Kabel and Brush. Headlines were set in 36 and 24 point. Captions were set in 8 and 6 point. The yearbook staff produced the book on the Comtran Software Computer Program

Layout design had uniform column widths for each section The cover was red with black print accented by two photos of the school.

The LINKS is a member of the Nebraska High School Press Association, the National Scholastic Press Association, and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association .

AndTheAction GoesOn

The action goes on even though the school year has come to an end . Many tears have been shed but also much laughter has been shared. We all felt the pain when the news of Dr. Jones' cancer was announced, but we all felt the joy as he came home. We were brought together as the news of the many plane crashes claimed the lives of innocent peo- • pie. We fought over the controversial film, "The Last Temptation of Christ" and we rejoiced over the Soviets being pulled out of

Afghanistan. We were pulled apart by Bush's election and Kerry's election to the Nebraska State Senate. We felt saddened at the death of Hiro Hito, the emperor of Japan whom broke a lasting tradition of leadership rule We were confused in deciding the value of an unborn Jife and brought it to the supreme court. Tears and fears have brought us together enabling us to grow closer and share one of the best years ever.
