As we reflect back on the school year of 1995-1996 we remember the classes, frie r good and bad days, and the goofy things we did. As memories flash through our mind think of the most memorable events that have occurred this year. _
One specific event that stands out in our minds ... We celebrated a birthday. Lefler ce t brated 40 years of excellence in academics, caring staff, and impressionable studen ts their middle level years. We as a school were proud to attend a school that has served t , generations of students over its forty year duration.
This school year began with planning the birthday celebration and advertisement o f events. Teachers and students were encouraged to dress according to the 1950's style f they were when Millard Lefler opened. For that week, many activities took place such contests, games, 50's style classes, dressing up, fashion shows, concert assemblies, a n a sock hop to top it all off.
I n addition to the birthday celebration many other activities have taken place in each individual class. Mrs. Golden ' s ninth grade P.E. class went to Madsen ' s bowling alley, and M r. Pappas's, along with Mrs. Golden 's ninth grade class , went golfing at Jim Ager Jr. Golf Co urse, and they learned a two-step dance. Mrs. Golden ' s seventh grade and Mrs . Kruger's ei ghth grade classes were visited by Christy Johnson and Erick Strickland. Mr. Lambert
pl anned a trip to the Bryan Memorial Hospital's Occupational Therapy Unit during their fi tness unit.
E ighth grade English classes studied the American Revolution, participated in the D .A.R.E Essay contest, wrote children 's books , and followed the battlefields of the Civil War. Animal Farm, Time Enoug:h For Drums , Anne Frank , The Odyssey, Leroy and the
O ld Man, and Call of the Wild, were only a few novels read in English classes.
T he second year Spanish, French , and German classes participated in the UN-L Foreign Lan guage Fair. Senora Shipp's class prepared a play and memorized poems. Senorita Darlington's class designed a poster for the competition. In addition , Shipp 's class designed na m etags to represent Lefler 's Spanish departmen t in the contest.
T he Lefler Symphonic Band was chosen to pe r form at the Nebraska Band Masters Conve nt ion at Kimball Recital Hall. The Lefle r PTO honored the students _ with a pizza party.
T h e Select Choir sang for the All-Ci t y Choral Festival and The American Choral Directors
A s s ociation Regional Convention.
With the many events that have taken place , we will each remember something differe n t about this year.

It's been a bumpy ride for the eighth graders, but the fun is not over yet! They've ma e it through with the help of cotton candy and ice cream. The eighth grade team former l known as Team 'Iwo changed their name to the Chillin' Cheetahs as part of their tea _ goals. Other activities they participated in were holding homework sweepstakes, rewar cing "acts of kindness," and taking a field trip to downtown Lincoln. The eighth grade1 studied the American Revolution and the Civil War. They held craft fairs, had "high te a " with Mrs. Yeck, and sampled some southern cookin' with Mrs. Stewart. Students in M r : Schmidt's class had the chance to attend Engineering Week. The end of the year w f marked by a yearbook signing party. The eighth graders look forward to seeing the , friends again next year and experiencing the thrill of the 9th grade.

He lay down his head where the wind blows softly. He lay down with soft uncertainty, on the dark earth below a tall oak tree.
In a calm gentle place he lays, no longer fearful of t hings to come.
He lay down his head with warmth and open arms, leaving cold guilt in his wake.
In the sunrise you can see his loving smile. The blinking of his eye is the twinkling of a star above.
He lay down his head trusting in his fate , leaving a soft hand in the present and another in the future.
Guiding along the loved ones he still loves. He lay down his head where the wind blows softly.
We love you , Mijo. by Crystal

For the second year, Lefler seventh graders participated in the GREAT program (Gang Resistance Education and Training). During the nine week program, students worked in small groups and class discussions and completed lessons on responsibility, crime, victims, neighborhoods, cultures, goal setting and conflict resolutions. Officer Dennis Scott, our Resource Police Officer, was in charge of the instruction and discussion which was presented weekly in English classes.
This program will hopefully help students make good choices and responsible decisions even when parents, teachers, and police officers are not present.
The graduation ceremony was held on March 1 in the auditorium. Student speakers included: Ambyr Morin, Robert Jackson, Tanisha Jones, Jessica Wambaugh, Matt Bloom, Ian Oehm, Ayesha Shinall, and Diamond Hairl. Tom Cassidy, Chief of Lincoln Police Department, was the featured speaker. Parents also attended.

The Lefler Merry-go-round began to hum to the beat of the calliope in September with the faculty at the hub. The self esteem goal, adopted by the staff in '95, continued on tar- 1 get as teachers tried to serve as role models and praise student efforts. One example of the staff serving as readingmodels was the March Madness Book Frenzy. All adults at Lefler were assigned to teams where they earned points for reading LMC books.
Airplane, subs, and church altars offered diversity for the staff outside of the classroom. Charlotte Everts was married last summer and Derek Lambert took the ''plunge" in December. Mrs. Smith made the attendants' dresses for Everts' wedding.
Mrs Roseberry and her husband welcomed a new little girl in the fall. New additions will soon arrive for Mrs. Mason, Mrs. Vidlak, and Mrs. Foster.
A trip to Florida resulted in a special submarine ride on the Nebraska for Mr. McDermott. Mrs. Yeck attended the International Lions Convention in Korea. Both Mrs. Yeck and Mrs. Dance vacationed in Hawaii.
Special kudos earned by our teachers were: Mrs. Kieselhorst, Sexuality Educator of the Year from Planned Parenthood; Ms. Boner and her band continued to record and presented a special SCIP concert for the Lefler audience.

To help students get through ro u gh times at school, Lefler has a team of special p eer mediators. Last year student s chose the current m e di ators by vote. Their job is to lis t e n to both sides of an argument and try to unders tand the situation . Ever ything that is talked about is k ept private. Usually a solution i s found and the prob lem is peacefully r e s o l ved . The Mediators did an outst anding job this year. Most problems that were brough t to the mediators were solved peacefully.

The Symphonic Band has had a very eventful year and performed several concerts for the Lefler students and parents. They were selected for the Nebraska Band Master Convention. In order to be a finalist for the convention, the band had to send in a recording to be judged. The committee selected the Lefler Symphonic Band, the only middle school band to be chosen. After a month of preparation the band played at the Kimball Recital Hall for the public. A plaque which honors this accomplishment is now hanging in the band room. This is the first time in Lefler's 40 year history, that the band has received this honor.

What a year it' s been for Student Council. They have done things for the school as well as the community. They held dances , a book fair , candy sales , a talent show , spirit days , and a carnival. Student Council also planned community projects , including a canned food drive , food and gift baskets for needy families and a gun safety program
Student Council started out the year with a bang by promoting Lefler ' s 40th birthday . Students enjoyed a day of activities from the 50 ' s and then spent the afternoon rocking to tunes from the past.
