An early August school opening and hot sticky weather brought together both old and ne w Leflerites to green lockers and room changes for teachers. The larger than usual seventh g ra d e class soon became acquainted with lockers, cafeteria rules and class schedules.
Eighth graders plunged into the Johnny Tremain novel and Yankee Doodle Fair which followed
Ninth graders enjoyed a "banquet " of electives as they concentrated on getting good grades fo • their permanent record
The Tulsa Indian Theatre from Oklahoma presented the first all-school assembly in Novemb e r Learning American Indian folklore in English classes helped students be t ter understand t h dances.
A first for Lefler was Student Vote '92. All students qualified to vote as long as they registered i n Social Studies classes. Three voting areas were scattered around the school and students ca s t their ballots throughout the day. This mock election followed all procedures accurately and Brya n Hospital VIP volunteers helped staff the polls arid count the votes. The green school halls turne red , white and blue. Students studied and argued over the issues . Hal Hansen and his Electio n Board led us a ll through a wonderful first-hand experience.
A " last" for Lefler was ninth grade sports the way we ' ve always known i t. As each season concluded , team members felt sad that sports enthusiasts would not be able to participate in competitive games in the future. Due to three junior highs moving ninth graders in to high school, the LPS Athletic Policy was changed. From now on, ni nt h graders will compete o n h igh school teams However , an intensive intramural program will remain.
Even promotion was changed this year. Students did not watk across the stage to receive certificates. Instead the year-end program focused mostly on social activities .
The Wes t ward Unit for eighth graders concluded with muzzle loading experts and speakers on the Native American culture. A fourteen foot teepee was built on the athletic field
Although w e are constantly reminded of recycling efforts and possibilities , the spring Environmenta l Fai r showed us, with projects and posters , new ways to save our planet. The rain forest
and wha le helped us understand the nece s sity of protecting what we have. This year ' s f a ir was expanded to include a ll grade levels, ou r Bryan VIP , local business people, and parents.
In an effort to make us aware of many pro bl ems an the world such as starvation , lack of toys a nd ot he r simple pleasures, the Red Cross coll e cted ma t er i als for and stuffed Friendship boxes for stu den ts in deprived countries
The advent of m id dle level schools will change the junior high p i ct ure in years to come Our st roll through th e Lefler store has stocked our sh el v es well fo r th e future.
S t udent Vote ' 92 Ele c tion Commiss i oner, Hal Hansen, and representat iv es of the Election Board celebrate a f ter a successful November election d a y.
The newest shoppers at this grocery store of adolescence are the irrepressible seventh graders. Encountering a buffet of new classes , teachers, and extracurricular activities may seem a bit overwhelming at first but soon becomes commonplace to the youngest consumers at Lefler. Obtainment of permission to chew gum in class is a novelty but who knows if it's a fair t rade for the loss of recess. First year Leflerites prepare to meander through their second year as this one closes out with special activities such as roller skating and the Environmental Fair.

Followin g the novel study of Johnny Tremain, students prepared and attended the Yankee Doodle Fair. Crafts re miniscent of the 1 B00's, such as wreath making, quilting, and tea making were revived and enjoyed b y the eighth graders.
A roller s kating outing brightened the winter blahs and added to team socialization. Although this class has studied the westward movement before, special activities were added. T h e se included sp eakers on muzzle loading, traveling the Oregon Trail, and fur trading. A huge teepee, c o m-
plete wi th campfire was constructed on the playground.
This clas s joined the seventh graders for the annual Environmental Fair. Projects were displayed in the halls of Lefler and Bryan Hospital.

From clustered around the cheese counters, the produce section, the canned goods, and tissue department the ninth graders have now come together at the check-out stand to look over our junior high receipts and determine what other "stores" we need to visit before our spree is over. School dances, athletic opportunities, a variety of clubs, snow days, elections, and green lockers leave pleasant memories. A "buffet" of various opportunities has provided us the background for high school.

Jeff McMillen became a permanent sub for Cindy Golden after she underwent back surgery in March.
Ben Kru ger arr i v ed during the summer to mom Becky, and swelled the ranks of faculty children. Joey Evans found her Prince Charming and became Mrs. Steve Hartman April 3.
A holiday get together at The Garden Cafe , communicat i n g with parents, adjusting curriculum to meet the needs of all students, and adapting to the new inclusion plan were just a few of t h e many r esponsibilities of the Lefler staff for the ' 92 -' 93 year.

First Friends is a Lefler organization which helps new students to our school feel more comfortable with class schedule , cafeteria experiences, and meeting new classmates. Interested Leflerites apply for this club in the spring, and are notified during the summer. First Friends members meet for a full days' training in August. Making straw towers without conversation and completing positive writings helps members learn to communicate both verbally and non-verbally. This necessary skill helps the understanding level in dealing with very nervous and frightened new students during the school year. Org & Act.
