1990-1991
1990,91 was a very eventful year for Lefler, and moreover, the world. We watched as the Middle East conflict; Operation Desert Shield, stepped into the Middle East War; Operation Desert Storm. Student Council gave out yellow ribbons, as our hearts and minds went out to the soldiers in Saudi Arabia. We also found ourselves watching C more than we ever expected. On February 2 7, we all became relieved when President George Bush announced that the war had ended. We hope to see our troops corning home soon.
We started off the year with a couple of very exciting assemblies. One speaker was our Mayor, Bill Harris. Then on September 28, a real star visited Lefler. This star was Arnold Schwarzenegger. He came to speak to the Lefler students about the importance of physi, cal fitness. While he was here, he visited the seventh period gym classes. It was quit e an exciting day for Lefler, Lincoln, and ebraska.
Lefler had many staff changes to adjust to this year. These changes included our ne w principal, Hugh McDermott and many new teachers. These new stars at Lefler are De b Vidlock Sarah Adams, Katie BoDer, Jon Dawson, Theresa Gross, Jeff Pappas, Julie Yid , lak and Kirk Skiles. Lefler said their goodbyes to two teachers this year. Tom Foch t moved on to teach at Southeast and drama teacher, Ruth Kay, stepped on to Detroit , Michigan. Midge Dance also left Lefler for a while this ear. Although the students and staff missed her extremely, we learned many new and interesting things from her temporary replacement, Winnie Johnson.
Student Council elections were different this year. We had representatives from each first period classroom which allowed for a much larger Student Council of 40 members. As a result, more student ideas were suggested and different projects tried.
Lefler congratulates Aaron Bott and Carrie Brobst who won the Elks club fifty dollar savings bonds. We are also proud of Lefler's winners in the Design An Ad Contest. This was the second year Lefler has been involved with this and we have had excellent results. The winners were ate Wambaugh, over all third place and Jenny Powell, Chris, tine Schliefer and Michael Zak, contest finalists.
Lefler was turned up,side, down this year, as painters became the school's closest friends. We had to adjust to moving classrooms and paint fumes, but in the end, we all agree that it was worth our trouble. Lefler is a step above the rest with all its dazzling new colors.
This year at Lefler has been a series of stairways to climb . We have all stepped up to higher achievements and have reached our destination. The destination, we at Lefler, call stardom

We have climbed to a new height, leaving the old and rising to the challenge and the wonder of that new star we reach for, High School. Yet, as we reach and climb higher we will not forget this important stop along the way, called, Lefler Jr. High. We made many new friends, and learned new things and received the necessary help from wonderful teachers and counselors. We took chances and sometimes met with ad, versity or disappointment, but still here we are we've made it. There's no turning back now, we're on our way to that illusive star,High School.

The eighth graders entered the middle galaxy and dodged the planets. An early time warp placed them at the 1700's Johnny Tremain Fair where local artisans taught pottery , quilt making, carving and other early American trades.
Leaming CPR and dissecting frogs and worms helped these " balls of light ' 1 expand their horizons in the scientific areas.
Unknown satellites beckoned the 8th grade meteors into space stations of Student Council, Select Choir, Red Cross, Builders Club and other activities.
ow challenges scatters eighth graders all over the Lefler universe, but the y clustered together for their blast-off into ninth-grade.

As the seventh graders started their long climb to the top, they encountered many new experiences. They were faced with Exploratory Block, which included the sounds of singing, foreign languages, and strange keyboards. The visits of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mayor Bill Harris had the seventh graders seeing stars. Many star-studded opportunities such as Student Council, Red Cross, Just Say o , Builder's Club, and after school sports were open to the seventh graders. The seventh grade class was treated to a dazzling day of roller-skating at Holiday Skate World. These activities added up to a challenging, but fun-filled year. After mounting the first steep steps of junior high, the seventh graders are ready to face the nexr flight of the stairway-eighth grade.

De spite a number of changes, the Lefler faculty guided us to a successful school year. Don Grass, me yer retired over the summer , and Hugh McDermott stepped in as our new principal. Jackie La, Foll ette and Molly Murdock took maternity breaks to spend some time with their new babies, while Ruth Kay moved to Detroit with her husband.
Afte r many years of service to Lefler students, Adele Streitweiser, Cynthia Tanderup, and Gloria Cod dingham announced that they would retire at the end of this school year. 1heir last year ma rked the first year for Katie Boner, Jon Dawson, and several paraprofessionals, who joined with the other members of the Lefler faculty to help students' dreams come true.
The faculty's focus on school activities was broken by the Persian Gulf War. Several members of the faculty had sons, husbands, or other relatives called to duty. Many of us turned our thoughts and prayers to the American soldiers, and we look forward to their safe return home.
The main goal of Lefler' s staff was to keep communication between students, parents, and teachers flowing with three week grade reports. One thing we will all remember, is how the faculty taught us to reach for the stars!

Mascot class did their best to keep us informed this year. The cla s published five issues that were out of this Solar System, with features, editorials, news, and sports. With all the hard work, Mascot has definitely come out on top of the staircase.
