This was an exciting year, not only for Lefler , but for our nation as well. November of 1988 marked the election of our 41st President . He and other newly elected officials will help us brave the rapids and guide our futures to better understandings.
Lefler had many changes to adjust to. We welcomed a new vice principal , Carol Robinson, and Barb Terry, a new counselor. We watched them as they surfaced to the top. We sadly say goodbye to Ed Childress. After thirty-four years of teaching Industrial Arts he has finally waded through the deep waters of Lefler to move on to new heights :
This is t he second year in our \.:enture in Partnership (VIP) program with Bryan Memorial Hospital. We enjoyed several activities that occurred between Bryan and Lefler. Several classes made favors for holiday patient trays, and responded to Bryan 's daycare and employee children's letters to Santa Claus. This is also the first year where several students were on the liaison committee with other Bryan and Lefler representatives which met monthly.
Lefler was proud as Matt Bott and Jenny Engel drowned out the competition and won the Elks fifty dollar savings bonds as the Studen ts of the Month. Lefler was also pleased to have three students, Kelita Svoboda, Jeff Umstead, and Len Weyeneth accepted to go to Southern Europe on the Iberia 4trip this summer through the People to People High School Student Ambassador Program.
We had many interesting assemblies this year. Our Mayor , Bill Harris , Dr. Terry Tafoya , an Ind ian speaker, and two students from Israel , all spoke to Lefler and helped broaden our horizons.
S eventh grader s dog paddled through a great year in their new surroundings. In addition to their full schedules, they now have the chance to take Compu ter Literacy as an added part of their exploratory block program. It took them a while to adjust to Lefler but they sw am upstream with ease.
Eighth graders flipped their fins into an exciting year of exploration. They had fun · at the Indian Center and they investigated anatomy while dissecting a frog and a worm. Now they 're paddling their way into ninth.
Ninth graders had a full year of activities ranging from participating in plays , being on the Mascot and Yearbook staffs , assisting teachers , and taking part in Student Council. Even with their busy schedules they managed to have a sea full of fun. Now as they dive into high .school they 've definitely made a splash at Lefler.
Al t hough this year had to come to an end , everyone moved up to bigger and more exciting events. We certainly left a lasting impression in the sand

"Ooh . . . that really • burs t m y bubble!"
Ninth grade has swum a great distance since the beginning of the school year. We made new friends and caught many great memories that will always be remembered. Ninth grade Student Council was well represented and explored many depths. We were always ready for a new adventure , from dances in the cafeteria to Career Day. As ninth graders , we accepted many new challenges. A wider selection of classes offered us the opportunity to explore underwater worlds.
As we swim toward the vast seas and on to high school, Lefler will always be a memorable part of our lives.

Faculty dove into 1988 with a few new strokes. The year began with a "welcome back " and "get acquainted " picnic in Mrs. Robin.son 's backyard. This allowed the teachers to get the year started with a positive outlook.
All teachers , new and old , were rewarded for their outstanding abilities on Teacher Appreciation Day , March 7. The staff was provided with cookies and muffins by the PTA and additional treats by Bryan Hospital. The teachers also received gifts from students ranging from a smile to a bouquet of flowers sent by a former student.
The goal of the faculty staff was to reduce the amount of tardies A~ the end of last year there had been over 2500 tardies. This year there were approximately 1700 Th is is a great improvement , but it is hoped that next year will be even better.
Faculty sheds a sea full of tears as they bid farewell to Mr. Childress. Mr. Childress has successfully taught Lefler students for 34 years . He will always be remembered by students and teachers
Despite the many changes in the tide , the year was completed with a successful splash.

The 1988-89 Publications class spent their fir st quarter studying "The Golden Years of Hollywood ". By second quarter our staffs were selected and then we "got crackin '" on the yearbo ok. It wasn 't as easy as all of us believed it would be, but fortunately Shafer and Dawson were here to bail us out. Grease pencils , propo rtion ing wheels , dummy sheets , an d rulers were the main tools of the classroom trade from October to April. Whe n the yearbook hit the presses , the class concentra ted on the literary magazin e , our creative writing magazine From large tid al waves to calm sea s the Pu blications cla ss steere d their shi p toward s safe ha rbors and new adv entures .
Studen t Council has accomplished a great many things this past year, from concession stand to our allschool dance. The seventh graders have floated in and stated their points of view. Our eighth graders swam to deeper waters and are ready to be the big fish next year. The ninth graders are now drifting out to "sea" the new world. Student Council has always fulfilled their responsibility by sponsoring activities, but this year they started a new one. Two to four Lefler members met monthly with Student Council representatives from junior and senior high schools to discuss common school problems. This network communication suggested positive results for any discip line problems. Although the year is almost completed , Student Council dove into deeper waters to accomplish the impossible.

This year's Mascot classes published six issues. They dove into the class thinking th e ir only task was to produce a paper, however , they soon discovered they had few journalis t ,..., writing skills and their bubbles burst. Determined to master this obstacle quickly , they swa n through leads, editorials, news, features, sports, copy reading and layouts! Stress bared J dangerous fish hook as they paddled through interviews , writing on the computer a ni deadlines. Paste up nearly caused their pier to sink as their creative juices were drained to t h~ max. When stories and clip art finally came together for their finished product, they felt li ke sailing into the sunset. Some of them have set their spyglass on high school journalism a J will sail on in future publications.

Mayor Bill Harris , Officer Wendy Townsend and Officer John Ways presented a "Say No To Drugs " assembly on January 26th. Each speaker had a different method of convincing their audience for saying no to drugs. The mayor offered a "trade off", saying that he would rather spend money on enforcement and rehabilitation instead of the "illegal" drugs themselves. Officer Townsend stated that there are a number of reasons why kids make "stupid decisions" and one of t he main ones is peer pressure. Officer Ways stated that "it 's h ar d to say no because you have tq learn how _ to stand alone. " He also info rmed k ids that drug sellers don 't care . "All they want is your money. "

The 51 members of Select Choir spent several weeks mastering foreign languages in song, snapping through Broadway numbers, souling with gospel, and practicing hitting the high notes acappella. Once the shirts and blue cummerbunds arrived , Select took their show on the road. Holiday medleys filled Bryan Hospital, the Centrum lobby, and Kimball Recital Hall. Radio stations KFOR and KLIN spilled Select's music onto the airways. The annual Spring Concert and a performance at the Nebraska Legislature ended another melodious year for Lefler 's outstanding vocalists.
