Lefler, Lincoln, and Nebraska created landmarks in 1986-87 Nebraska opened all highways by electing the first woma r Republican governor after a heated campaign between tw women candidates.
Good weather parked in Lincoln during the winter and onl } changed for the worse when Mother Nature ran out of mane } for the parking meter.
Throughout the year construction was in progress on a ne avenue called Fitness Trail. The Lefler Canned Food Drive di e not encounter any stop signs on the road to the Malone Center The special education students also took a right turn with the ii long awaited garden.
The seventh graders began the Road to Success, while th f eighth graders continued to plow through. The ninth grade n reached the end of this road only to find new highways stand ing before them.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), donated a tree to Lefler. On Saturday , March 7, 1987, the DAR, with the Student Council , came to Lefler and planted an ash tree. Mrs. Jemison , a former Lefler counselor , was the organizer of the event.

An embryology un it too k on special meaning and involved the entire school when th e local 4-H of fi ce delivered 18 eggs and an incubator to Lefler in March Students and faculty play ed " Moth er Hen " as they checked for sha king eggs daily and even submitted names for the expect ed chicks. Se veral faculty members and one custodian spent one long and lonely Sunday evening in order to wit ness the emergence of t he first chick" Eggs Benedict. " The total hatching produced eight live chi cks who were returned t o the 4-H office.
In order to deve lop lead ership skills , a group of Lefler students adopted senior citizens at Tabitha. The students also worked wi t h the Hawthorne kindergarten classes and the multiple handicapped unit. " These students f oun d strength within themselves by helping other people ," said Mrs Flory . 5

We made it! We've encountered winding roads , steep hills, and many traffi c jams.
The success of the seventh grade wa s not ev ident until we completed eighth and could look back on our crashes and tickets. We took off at a fast pace and became involved in Student Council and Red Cross. Select Choir and Sta ge Band came in eighth and ninth grade.
Now as the highway divides , we have mixed feelings , because high schools' speed limit may be too fast. But we will conquer , as we ' ve done before , as we travel our new road on our ever-constant search for success.

The 8th grade achieved their goals in the middle O-' the highway this year by part icipat ing in Student Counc il , Select Choir , and Red Cross. Their path continued as they plodded through another year of classes , such a$ Sc ience , in which , they dissected frogs , worms , ancother things lying next to the street. The 8th grade ha~ been very productive this year and their path is full am complete Let's hope as they follow the roads ahea d they will be as successful as they can be.

The seventh graders had a long but fun first year on the Road to Success. Eighth and ninth graders he lped them learn the tricks of the road. Their journey included many pit stops , like the seventh grade party , which was a great success! While being very active in Student Council , they still completed their journey on time · Good luck down the rest of the road!

The faculty drove straight to the top again by designing programs to help the students. A new struggle program was initiated to provide extra help for those students with academic difficulties by establishing a daily checklist between the student and the teacher. New objectives for the Faculty Advisory Council were approved early in the year. This Council serves as a sounding board which eliminated regular allfaculty meetings. Depending on the season , the faculty always seems to build a somewhat successful team to compete against the faculties of other schools in all kinds of assorted sports. A majority of the Lefler math teachers received Cooper Awards. These awards are given for excell ence in teaching in elementary and secondary schools , both public and private.

PTA made it an exciting road for par ents , teachers and students of Lefler by arr anging refreshments after choru s and in strumental concerts, providing pizza for th e teachers on the afternoons of parent -teach er conferences, and holding monthly programs on topics of interest to par ent s. During the fall months they held a welcomin g party for the eighth and ninth gra ders , and co-sponsored the seventh grade party. In the winter PTA participated in a work shop on legislation. In the spring month s th ey provided refreshments for the city-wi de elementary school science fair held at Lefler , and they entertained the ninth graders with a promotion dance.
Red Cro ss took their road to success this year by doing many things for Lefler and their community OnHalloween , they got into their costu mes and played games with children at a da y care center. They babysat at a Red Cross Chapter House and al so at Ran dolph School. To help cure th e study ing blues at Christmas, Red Cross so ld Candy Canes and gave ev eryone at Lefler real sweet teeth. We hope to see Red Cro ss back next year ready, and rarin' to speed down the highway again.

Yearbook piled in the bus to study Hollywood and photography. We concluded our first quarter by watching the ever great ' ' Gone with the Wind .'' We shifted into high gear with the beginning works of the yearbook by writing copy- blocks and headlines , cropping pictures , and meeting deadlines. Our expedi- tion continued onward as we concluded the last pages of the yearbook . Our year was brought to a close with the Literary Magazine , and the bus was once more returned to the LPS bus terminal in wait of another busy year.

'' Math counts is a series of competitions designed to produce high levels of achievement in Junior High students. It consists of district , state , and national contests sponsored by the Nationa l Society of Engineers , the National Counc il of Teachers of Mathematics , and NASA At each contest a team of four 7th and 8th grade students is involved in taking an individual test of basic facts , a team test in which the four team members can work together to solve problems , and an individual round of problem solving . Each ind ividual and the team earns a score based on how many problems they solve correctly. This year , Lefler ' s team of Kerry Childe , Jeff Ridenour , Robert Brown , and Chris Boileson did an outstanding job representing Lefler at the distr ict contest. The team brought home the thi rd place trophy and Jeff Ridenour was the fifth place individual. "
