The 8th graders this year were invovled in many activi ties. Some had a part in the school play. Som e were also involved in a special readin g program auction. Those members of Student Council did a wonderful job. The 8 th graders painted the grafi tti on the Piedmont wall and earned the Community Service Award for Augus t, 1981. This 8 th grade class had two counselors each year here at • Lefler. The Classic 8 th grade will be a great help next ye ar.

In the change from elementary to junior high, the seventh graders made new friends and met new people.
They encountere d new restrictions and responsibilities, such as changing classes every hour, lockers, dances, and skating parties. Some seve nth graders ran for S t udent Council. These are just a fe w things they enjoyed.
Most seve nth graders will never forget t he holiday plays, "How the Grinch S to le Christmas", and "A Christmas Carol."

Teachers play a very important role in our lives. They prepare us for high school and give us a bright future. Without them, we wouldn't have come this far.
Lefler has a very remarkable staff. Each teacher tries to make their subject interesting, yet still educational. If the staff isn't good, than the school isn't all it should be.
Being a teacher involves more than teaching, it involves being an understanding friend.

The ye arbook class, a year long elective, is divided in t o three sections. The class pursues ·an in-dep t h study of films and the movie industry. Vario us photography tricks and camera angles ar e emphasized.
The cla ss concentrates on writing and editing t he yearbook for two full quarters. The editors and staffs £ r the six sections of the yearbook ar e sele ct ed by the sponsor, Mrs. Shafer, an d then the work begins.
Selec t ing the theme for the book is perhaps the mos t diffi cult task. Pictures are scheduled, copy block s are composed and pages are planned. A professional photographer was used for the formal ninth grade pictures, a frrst for Lefler. Afte r many headaches, tears, and cheers, the b ook fmally went to press in April. The final qu arter of the class was spent studying radio an d television.

The students were well represented this year in student government by the Student Council. They boosted the schools' reputation by many gift giving projects. These included giving Thanksgiving and Christmas gifts to the Malone Center, Operation Santa Claus, The Salvation Army, and the Cedars Home for Children. They had student exchanges with various Junior High' s. They also sponsored different activities such as the ski trip to Crescent, Iowa, Spirit Week, and several dances. Lefler is proud of their representatives for this year.

This is one group not just anyone can fit into. You have to believe in Hobbit, Gnomes, and everything else you can imagine. If you dream of conquering the great Minotaur or taking a trip with Bilbo Baggins, the Council of Elrond is for you. This year they encountered such things as Dungeons and Dragons, ventured through the unknown and discovered the light at the end of the road. We salute you Council of Elrondl

The spectacular Stage Ban d, led b y Mr. Miller , had a great year. Prac t icing and h elping students to get the right notes, and listenin g to students who ne v er get the ri ght note s, one would think that Mr. Miller w ould abou t go cra zy. Even with thes e ev e ryday probl ems, the Stage Band still pu t s o n an excellen t performance at every one of t h eir concerts
The Stage Band had two concer ts during the second semester. They played for t h e stud ents at Eastridge, Hawthorn e, Holmes, and Randolph.
There are twenty two members in t he Lefler Stage Band, and from the violin pl ayer to the drummer, each one seem s to put t heir music together perfectly.
The Lefl er St~ge Band has n e w T - shirts this year. The design was drawn by Danny Cur tis, 8th grader.
The Lefle r s t udents would like to th ank the Stage Band fo r performing so well a t all of their co ncert s and a s semblies. They really play classi cally .

The Advanced Drama cla s se s , taught by Mary Jo Lorenz-Soucek, worked very hard t o produce the allschool play, "Thursday Meets th e Werewolf." The drama students also joined the vocal music department to present "A Variety of Stars."
Rolin Lemon broke his arm and sprained his ankle the day before the production. Eigh t h grader, Kirth Pederson, who had only twenty-four hours to learn the lines, stepped in as the replace m ent.
This year's play was ab ou t a boy, who had been bitten by a werewolf when he was a chil d , and later grew up to be an outcast in societv. He live d in the marsh because no one wanted a w;rewolf to be n ear them This werewolf had a deep craving for golf balls and mistakenly kills a golfer trying to fulfill his appetite for golf balls. The adventure continued as the trusty p oli c e , Amy Marquez and K irk Malzer, hunted the werewo lf Th e climax of the play was when the werewolf got s ho t with a tranquilizer. They discovered he wasn't harmful , h e j ust liked golf balls!

Lefler in 1981 -82 was a year of babies, birthday parties, lots of snow, and painters- everywhere!
The school was dotted with bright colors from the boiler room to the bathrooms . . The instrumental music room is a lovely shocking pink.
Combos were introduced in the lunchroom and tokens disappeared, alon g. with the old fold-out tables in the wall s.
Our faculty added five new memb ers to the population of Lincoln.
Art and creativity lined halls, alls, windows.
We were saddened by the loss of our dear friend and coach, John Fox.
This year was a class in itself.

In 1968, the Joseph Kennedy Junior Foundation created Special Olympics. Since then, it has become the largest program of sports training and a t hletic competion for the mentally retarded in the world. For the mentally retarded, sports and physical activity are the quickes t, surest road to health, growth and self confidenc e . The retarded have always been told, "You can't do it." Special Olympics says: "You can do it. All you need is a chance."
Special Olympics is sport in its truest sense. The goal is not to win but to try. To experien ce, not to conquer. No time is too slow, no distance too small to earn a ribbon, a hug, a cheer, or a sincere, "well done."
No records are broken in Special Olympics-
except those for courage, determination and
sportsmanship.
