Irving Middle 1996 Yearbook

Page 1

YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW

As we look back in the past and gaze towards the future, we will never forget the friends, teachers, love, and support we found at Irving. The friendly "hello" in the hallway or "What's going on Friday night?" will soon become part of the past. The friends that meant so much to our lives may move on as the new friends become reality.

The teachers that influenced our lives so greatly can only wish the best · for us and hop·e that .we will . choose a bright future.

The 111emories of Irving will never be completely forgotten. Th·ey will remain a part of our lives forever. Now we are faced with decisions. Many of which are more difficult than in the ast. Which direction in life will we choose? Do we have the strength to sue:.. ceed?

When the last bell rings through the halls, we will see faces of courage, friendship, love, forgiveness, and distance. No matter what happens in our journey, we will always feel the power of togetherness among us. • Our achievements of the past have encouraged the tide of the present and future goals. To the students, the teachers, and the classes of yesterday, today, arad tomorrow we dedicate the 1995-96 yearbook.

We all have an unknown destiny in life and we are only beginning to see where it will lead us. When we take our last glance down the halls of Irving Middle School we can only hope that we will all accomplish the goals we have set for ourselves and reach for the ·stars.

Together

To reach for a distant star, Is to reach for a hope afar.

But to touch your dream, Though hard it may seem,

You must see it first, Or all will burst.

On your way to the top, Frustration may creep in and make you stop.

But you must keep on going, And the world you will keep on showing,

That together we can reach better heights, And Irving will be known as the school of kites.

For the world it is ours, And together we must reach for the stars. Amber Hascall. ___ _

Reach for the Stars

Seasons change, people grow New friends come and new friends go. You were here, now you're gone The same old words to the same old song, You leave with memories, some good, some bad, Some of them are even sad. It was fun while it lasted, but now you must move on,

To some place new and some place fun. Change will happen, unstoppable, unbeatable. No one can stop the change. Whether it's excepted or you're led astray, Things will happen in a whole different way. Good bye ninth-graders, take care, so long. We'll sail into the mist of the deep blue sky, Entering our journey into a thing called life. we look out the window at every hope, wish, and dream. We reach for them, We reach for the stars.

their dreams. Hopefully, many will make their hopes and dreams come true. When we come b~ck for our 1O year reunion, what will we look like;

what kinds of jobs will we have?

In seventh grade you make sure you are perfect before you leave for school. You look up admiringly to the eighth and ninth graders, hoping you'll be like them in a couple of years. In eighth grade you look forward to almost everyday of school; thinking how annoying the seventh graders are, forgetting you were once like them. You still look up to the ninth graders saying you want to be like them someday. In ninth grade you just go with the flow. You are looking forward to going to high school next year, looking up to the high school kids.

Never forget your hopes and dreams. Don't give up on them and leave them behind as you do Irving. And don't forget you have fun while doing it.

Good-bye

School has ended, we've said our good-byes, Smiles on our faces, yet tears in our eyes.

Remembering all the fun that we had, Changing in ways, some good and some bad.

Finding out who we are inside, Letting out feelings that we used to hide.

No longer afraid to speak our mind, Through all this, courage we find.

We learn to grow to accept what may come ; No longer alone, but together as one.

We've been through so much as the years grew,

Not completely sure, but somehow we knew.

That this experience would lead us through, To make the right choices in all that we do.

School has ended, we've said our good-byes, Smiles on our faces, yet tears in our eyes.

Eighth Grade Trends and Fads

Trends and fads. Most Irving eighth graders have a good idea of what's popular The the majority of them say they don't make an effort to keep up on the latest trends because they try to focus more on just being themselves. Yet, there are still others that feel that in order to fit in it is a necessity to keep up on what's popular.

So, what exactly are the trends that eighth graders are following? The results from a survey show that dying your hair different colors such as purple,- green, pink, and black is what most kids seem to be doing.

_ Other popular trends among the eighth graders include: flaflnels, Airwalks, corduroys, Grateful Dead shirts, 70's hippie clothes, baggy jeans, carrying hacky sacks, Massimo shirts, guys with long hair, leather necklaces with beads, basketball ou tfits, and fingernails painted blue or purple. Of coarse these are only a few of the fads kids have been following and are likely to change as time goes on.

EIGHTH GRADE ACHIEVERS and HIGHER BELIEVERS

"To be or not to be, that is the question."

Many students ask themselves this question before the first day of school, especially if they are new to a school and don't know anyone. The greatest thing about being an eighth grader is that you already know people, unless you are new to that school. Eighth grade is a grade to have fun and enjoy yourself. You should not be worried about if this person is going to like you or if- the guy that sits next to you in American Studies likes you. Save all of that for another year. You only get to be an eighth grader once in your life so I suggest that you make the best of it. Even if it means going home right after school and studying for the big test on Friday. Trust me, if you start right now on working hard to be a higher achiever it will help you out in the future.

School is a necessity of life. Without an education you won't get to far in life. To b ! that successful lawyer or doctor or a musical artist you need to be successful in your studies. Musical notes don't just up and appear on a piece of paper, you have to put the r 1 there. A person isn't just going to recover from a hear1-attac~, you as a doctor have to b e there for that person helping them out when they need a helping hand, and you are not just going to win your case in court. You as the individual have to make that sacrifice. N«, one is going to go to school for you and get the education that you need to be successfu l. It is all up to you. Eighth grade is the key to the door of your future. In order for you to have the key you must believe in you and be able to achieve.

Reaching for the Stars

Seventh and eighth grade is gone and soon we'll be ninth graders, but we'll keep all the memories of seventh and eighth grade. From the first time you walked into Irving and got lost in the crowd of older students, and you forgot your lunch money and had to borro_w. To your first big fight with your best friend, when you swore you'd never speak to each other again and the next day you ' re laughing as though nothing had ever happened. These are precious times that we will remember all the rest of our lives. We are growing up and moving on, we will have more responsibility, more privileges, and of course more homework!

These times of our lives helped us to understand the value of friendship and helped us to discover what we wanted in life. It taught us to reach for our goals and .try our hardest in everything. It taught us to reach for the stars.

Driving

To most kids it means freedom. You can go wherever you want whenever you want. Your parents are so happy that you can finally drive yourself across town to dance, football practice, baseball practice, or any other activity you do.

When asked, "Where is the first place you will drive when you get your license?" most eighth graders said they would go to their friend's house to show off their car. McDonald's, Best Buy, Kings, Super Saver, and even Mall of America were also mentioned.

As for the question of "How are you going to pay for the gas?" almost everyone is going to pay for their own gas by getting a job, anything from working at HyVee to mowing lawns.

The Mustang and the Volvo seem to be the most popular cars among eighth graders. Some eighth graders just wanted "anything that runs, 11 while some are going straight to the top with a Rolls Royce.

There is a down side to this new freedom. It's 6:30 and mom is making a spaghetti dinner, but low and behold she's all out of spaghetti sauce. Guess who ends up making a quick trip to Hinky Dinky?

So maybe you have to go get spaghetti sauce, or take your little brother to baseball practice but, you do get to go to the mall whenever you want or if you get a craving for a taco, just jump in the car and drive there.

Often times you wished, that this year would never end.

There are a few things you'd like to ch but overall it was a success,

When you look back on it later, It'll be the year you've liked best !

Taking the final bows for a pleased audience

A DREAM

A dream can seem very far away. With work, it becomes closer day by day. There is no substitute for work, no shortcut path to become what you wish to be; but once y9u're where you were hoping O how sweet victory . will be.

Though the road may get rough, read the signs on the way; they may be of great help to you someday . A t9ugh road will seem twice as hard if you don't laugh at the bumps , and be ready to be jarred.

Friends a r e important, ma ny or few; no one likes to paddle their own canoe. Like stained glass friendship is beautiful and unique; but the pattern c hanges with time, and is sometimes hard to keep. Shoul d it s h atter, it could always be repaired, but the scratches may a l ways be there.

Our paths will lead us far away, but we might meet again someday. We'll all follow our dreams, and look to our star, and remain close wherever we are.
